Mission Statement
Inspired by St. John Baptist de La Salle, La Salle
Catholic College Preparatory develops students
of faith, service and scholarship by providing a
transformative education allowing students to
realize their maximum potential and use their
gifts to serve Christ and humankind.
La Salle optimizes financial and academic
accessibility for students, especially the
underserved, who desire a rigorous and relevant
education preparing them for college and life.
The La Salle community inspires students to
find their voice as global citizens, to put their
faith into action and to lead exceptional lives
of integrity, honoring the God-given dignity
of all.
President’s Message: Year in Review
La Salle Prep is truly a high school to believe in. We’ve been investing in college-bound students since 1966 and we
continue to believe in students every single day. This past year alone 1,425 benefactors invested in La Salle’s annual appeal.
This same year, the 164 graduates of the Class of 2010 led La Salle to the state soccer championship; spearheaded the
school’s efforts in collecting more than $6,000 for the people of Haiti in less than 24 hours and broke the record as they
earned the highest amount of college scholarship dollars (more than $11 million) awarded to a La Salle graduating class.
This class also witnessed the retirement of two master teachers synonymous with Lasallian values – humble in nature and
authentic in their love of young people. In spring 2010, La Salle bid farewell to the eternally positive Señor Jim Ruppa,
who loyally served La Salle for 28 years, along with the pig-collecting Ms. Marilyn Milani, who spent the final 12 years
of her quarter century teaching career transforming young minds on La Salle’s campus. Scholars like Jim and Marilyn are
Lasallian educators who create the space where learning is centered, initiate conversations about things that matter with
respect for differing opinions, where boys and girls grow into young men and women who are life-long learners who use
their gifts to serve Christ and humankind.
There is ample research articulating the skills and knowledge needed for success in today’s globally interconnected,
technologically-charged environment. However, when president of Seattle University Father Stephen Sundborg spoke at
our Heritage Breakfast, he suggested our young people don’t need more classes, technology, language mastery, etc. They
need a center, a core, a soul that will hold them together and keep them planted. I believe La Salle’s attention to the heart,
mind and spirit of every student is what distinguishes us from others – and provides the framework for La Salle graduates
to thrive.
Thanks to our faithful benefactors, La Salle continues to significantly increase financial aid funds available for our families.
A core principle of Lasallian education is that all motivated students deserve an excellent education. It is not something
one must qualify for. Access to La Salle Prep has a broader and stronger reach thanks to so many of you. In fact, we are
proud to offer 45% of our student body financial aid, with $1.12 million distributed to well-deserving students in 20102011. La Salle continues to invest in students with outcome-based personalized instruction, a student:teacher ratio of
13:1 and an average class size of 22 for the 2010-11 academic year. La Salle’s new Science Technology Engineering Math
(STEM) Academy allows students to forge connections between potentially abstract concepts in the classroom and apply
their knowledge via project-based application, encouraging innovation, critical thinking and collaborative problem solving
skills, critical in the professional arena.
La Salle continues its commitment to addressing students with learning differences with innovative instructional strategies
and support for each student’s success. Currently, the school is conducting a needs assessment to confirm a qualified
cohort that would support a Catholic high school option for graduates with diagnosed learning differences.
Parent, alumni and community volunteers continue to be the lifeblood of our school. In fact, 17 La Salle alumni serve on
boards and 11 La Salle alumni returned to the school for their vocations. The Foundation Board launched the school’s new
planned giving website, ensuring that the future looks bright for students we have yet to meet. La Salle’s Alumni Board
is enjoying growth commensurate with our other boards, as they take the lead in our annual golf tournament, alumni
basketball tournament, campus development efforts, and the annual fund.
The confidence of our benefactors in the abilities of our students and faculty is clearly reflected in the willing financial
support of all those individuals noted in the pages of this report. I am hopeful you will join me in our shared mission to
continue to provide an excellent college preparatory education rooted in Gospel values. With a combination of faith,
energy, and generosity, we will continue to build a faith-based community that instills young men and women with a
passion to use their knowledge to serve humankind.
Blessings,
Denise L. Jones
President
2010-2011 Board Leadership
Board of Trustees’ Service Day
La Salle’s Board of Trustees has participated in service
projects in years’ past for Blanchet House and NW
Medical Teams. However, this past year they wanted to
offer their service to La Salle (photos above). Specifically,
the board chose to support the annual school-wide
theme focused on food by building and filling two
planter boxes for La Salle’s new garden in August 2010.
Steve Feltz ’73, Board Chair
NW Natural
Fr. E. William Beauchamp, CSC, University of Portland
The garden, which is in front of the Hamersly Library,
will be accessible by the faculty, staff and students of La
Salle as they explore food in a new light with a schoolwide theme focused on the complexities surrounding
food, specifically related to health, the environment, the
economy, and those experiencing hunger.
Jim Betonte, M & W Building Supply Co.
Through the academic curriculum, the implementation
of a school garden, speakers, service opportunities,
and other school programming, students will take
responsibility for their own food choices and become
advocates for those without access to healthy food.
John McDonagh, Vancouver Business Journal
In addition to building the garden, board members also
rolled up their sleeves and painted the interior of the
concession stands adjacent to the new turf field and
track.
Jack Powell ’73, The Sherpa Group
A special thank you to retired board members Joe
Bernard and Bernie Pliska ’79, who both served tirelessly
during two terms. La Salle also wishes to thank retired
alumni association board members Garrett Call ’94 and
Jamie Price ’94 for their service to the school.

Advancement Office
La Salle Prep’s Office of Advancement, through the annual giving program, alumni relations, special events, wreath/apple sale
student fundraisers and other activities, supports the school’s financial growth and sustainability. The office exists to support
student success by insuring access, maintaining academic excellence and providing increased opportunities to connect learning
with real-life experiences.

Annual Giving Program
La Salle Catholic College Prep’s Annual Giving Program is the cornerstone of our
annual fundraising activities. It is vital to advancing the mission and work of La Salle
Prep and supports our efforts to continue being true to our mission of ensuring access
to a quality education for all students regardless of financial ability. Maintaining
minimal expenses allows the Annual Giving Program to offer a high return on
donations, putting more money directly toward funding every aspect of a high quality
Lasallian education. The steady growth of the Annual Giving Program, in revenue and
participation, allows us to further advance our institutional goals.

Falcon Access Network
In 2009, La Salle launched the Falcon Access Network (FAN) to provide supporters a convenient way to make an automatic
monthly donation. Thanks to the 15 inaugural FANs listed below (as of June 30, 2010) we have $590 per month (over $7,000
per year) committed to this important endeavor. Becoming a FAN couldn’t be easier, just visit “Support La Salle” at
www.lsprep.org or contact us at 503.353.1425 or [email protected].

Partners in Education
The Partners in Education Program invites parents to partner with us to advance our Lasallian mission by participating in
PALS: Partners Assisting La Salle (volunteer program) and the Parent Investment Plan. The program allows us to remain
accessible to a greater number of families by keeping tuition increases to a minimum and providing need-based tuition
assistance. La Salle has never required families to cover, through tuition, the full cost to educate each student. For the 20092010 school year, there was a $2,940 difference between tuition ($9,950) and the full cost to educate each student ($12,890).
While some might suggest the easiest response is to raise tuition to match the cost of education, such an approach is not in
line with our commitment to providing access to all families regardless of financial means. Thank you to the parents who
contributed 209 donations totalling approximately $110,000.

Special Events
The 2009-2010 school year was once again a fantastic chance to come together as a
Lasallian community to celebrate both new events and time-honored traditions. Thank
you to everyone who supported these events - whether by donating, volunteering or
attending. The holidays just wouldn’t be the same without Yulefest (photo above right).
The 43rd Annual Yulefest and Wine Tasting once again kicked-off the Christmas season
with a blast.
The 16th Annual Auction celebrated “Everyday Heroes” in April 2010 at The Governor
Hotel. Over 250 people took part in the school’s largest annual fundraiser, raising over
$200,000 in support of La Salle’s mission (photo above left). Thank you to the hundreds
of people and businesses who donated auction items, volunteered, and attended the
event . . . they’re our heroes!
The year was capped off with a full course of golfers for the third consecutive year at the
13th Annual Golf Tournament presented by the La Salle Alumni Association at Stone
Creek Golf Club in July 2010 (photos below). The Alumni Association exceeded their
financial goal by raising nearly $13,000 to support the school.
2009-2010 Volunteers of the Year
In recognition of the selfless service given by volunteers and the crucial role they play in
the school’s success, La Salle’s Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award was established
in 1998. Few people have been more involved as La Salle parents than this year’s winners,
Paul and Lori Bosnjak Pimentel ’81. We thank Paul and Lori (pictured at left with
daughters Regina ’09 and Teresa ’10) for their dedicated service to our community.

Foundation Update
La Salle’s Foundation, which houses the endowment, exists solely to support
the mission of the school by providing for the professional management,
investment, growth, and distribution of endowed gifts. Growth of the Foundation’s
Endowment Fund allows the school to continue funding the mission by providing
quality, Catholic, college preparatory education regardless of families’ financial
means.
The Foundation’s Endowment Fund ended the 2009-2010 fiscal year with
a balance of $1.1 million. The La Salle Educators’ Fund, contributed to by
the school’s faculty and staff, remains one of the fastest growing funds in the
endowment with a balance growing to over $76,000 in just eight years.
The Foundation Board of Directors’ signature event, the 6th Annual Heritage
Breakfast in November 2009, raised $10,000 for tuition assistance. This event,
with featured guest Russ Danielson, Vice President and Chief Executive for
Providence Health and Services of Oregon (pictured above with Trustee John
McDonagh), and student speaker Lupita Carabes ’11, is an opportunity for the
school to share the story of our Lasallian mission with community members,
educators, and business leaders.
The Foundation Board of Directors continues to play an integral role in all aspects
of scholarship support, program and business partner development, and campus
facility upgrades. In fact, we learn of generous benefactors including La Salle in
their estate plans on a regular basis. Some of these generous gifts are a surprise to
us, and other gifts are those that we work with the benefactors for many months to
determine the most mutually beneficial arrangement.
The 2010-2011 fiscal year is off to a momentous start. Late this past summer, we
were honored by Tom and Lisa Epidendio D’Amore ’80 with a $14,000 gift of
scholarship. We are also honored and humbled by a recent announcement by Greg
’72 and Myra Parrott. The Parrotts have committed a $1 million planned gift they
are hopeful will inspire others to join in their efforts to grow the endowment. We
look forward to sharing the details of this remarkable gift in the near future.
You have the power to make a lasting impact on La Salle Prep students through
a planned gift. These types of charitable arrangements, like those established by
the generous group listed at left, let you support our programs far into the future
while also providing tax and other benefits to you. You don’t have to be a certain
age or wealthy to plan a gift that changes students’ lives. Please visit La Salle’s new
informative and engaging webpages to explore your planned giving options and
read donor stories under “Support La Salle” at www.lsprep.org.
2009-2010 Fiscal Year Financial Summary
At the heart of our Lasallian mission is the commitment to provide qualified students with access to an excellent college
preparatory education, regardless of their ability to pay. To that end, La Salle Catholic College Preparatory, in partnership
with various foundations, individuals, and corporate benefactors, works diligently to provide need-based tuition assistance to
students from economically marginalized families as well as from families of other socio-economic backgrounds who may be
facing financial challenges that adversely affect their ability to pay tuition.
In keeping with our mission, over 35% of our student body received financial assistance in 2009-2010, with awards ranging
from $500 to $10,724. The total amount of financial aid distributed exceeded $900,000 and the average grant awarded was
$3,800 per recipient.

Master Plan Update
Thanks to the overwhelming generosity and tireless commitment of La
Salle’s benefactors, the first phase of the stadium project was completed
in Fall 2009 with installation of the new track, turf field, lighting and
scoreboard (photo below).
The second phase of the stadium project (rendering above) will feature a
grandstand with seating for 1,500, a plaza, spirit shop, concessions, storage
and restrooms. Construction is contingent on the completion of successful
pledges and donations.
For more information about the Falcon Stadium project, please contact
president Denise L. Jones at 503.353.1430 or [email protected].
Falcon Practice Facility
On Thursday, October 7, 2010, the La Salle community gathered to
dedicate the Falcon Practice Facility (photos at right). Benefactors
gathered for a dinner and were thanked by president Denise L. Jones,
athletic director Brian Crawford, booster club president Dan Wood and
varsity coaches Chris George ’97 and Mike Drewett.
The facility was designed primarily for use by the softball and baseball
teams, but is available to other groups as well. In fact, the school hosted a
festive outdoor dance in the Falcon Practice Facility in the fall.

Community Spotlight
Living History
In spring 2010, students in Ms. O’Dell and Mr. Hegarty’s U.S. history classes engaged in
a service learning project with Princeton Village, a retirement community in Clackamas
(photo at left). To better understand modern history and how individuals are impacted
by major world events, students visited the residents on multiple occasions to interview
them. For their final projects, students created biographies, timelines, and artistic
representations of various time periods that were given to the residents to thank them.
“Is it just food?”
La Salle students, faculty, and staff are seeing food in a new light with a school-wide
theme which addresses many complex issues regarding food. The theme focuses on
the complexities surrounding food, specifically related to health, the environment, the
economy, and those experiencing hunger. La Salle aims to have students think critically
about the complicated relationships surrounding food growth and production, food
choices and health, the relationship between food and the environment, and the current
food crisis which impacts billions of people around the world. Through curriculum,
guest speakers, service opportunities, and other school programming, the goal is for
students to take responsibility for their own food choices and become advocates for
those without access to healthy food.
“The school-wide theme allows the opportunity to explore Catholic social teaching,
issues of economics as they relate to farming, food production, as well as sustainability
and accessibility challenges. Our faculty and staff are creating unique educational
opportunities for our students that will demand critical thinking and deepen their
knowledge about the systemic issues of food in our culture and nation,” said president
Denise L. Jones.
In conjunction with the theme, La Salle made significant changes to its food services.
During the summer of 2010, La Salle hired Lisa Quinn as the food service director
(at left with kitchen staff Pam Matteson and Becky Tetherow). Quinn, a parent of
two La Salle students, has been a food service director for the YMCA and St. Agatha
Catholic School. A graduate of the California Culinary Academy with over 20 years of
experience, she implemented a scratch kitchen at La Salle; using fresh, local, and seasonal
ingredients. Under her leadership, La Salle added a salad bar featuring local organic
produce and joined the Food Alliance, which champions sustainable food production.
The La Salle kitchen staff, including Kim McCarthy (at left), is teaming up with vendors
such as Alpenrose Dairy, Dave’s Killer Bread, Hot Lips Pizza, Kettle Chips, Pacific
Natural Foods, and Pizza Schmizza to provide more local options. “Our upgrades to the
kitchen menu are a testament to La Salle’s commitment to providing nutritious options
for our students and professional staff,” explained Jones.

McDonald 2010 Secondary School Librarian of Year
La Salle’s librarian for the past 15 years, Victoria McDonald (at right), was honored as
the Oregon 2010 Secondary School Librarian of the Year by the Oregon Association
of School Libraries (OASL), the professional group for school librarians and media
specialists throughout the state.
McDonald, whose role at La Salle changed to English teacher and literacy specialist for
the 2010-2011 school year, was selected from numerous highly qualified candidates
nominated by their principals or other school personnel. This is the highest award
given by the OASL, which each year honors one exemplary elementary school
librarian, one secondary school librarian, one district librarian, one school library
paraprofessional, and one school or district administrator.
McDonald was honored during the awards banquet October 10, 2010, at the OASL
Fall Conference in Salem (at right). She stood out above the other highly-qualified
candidates with the depth and breadth of her experience and district programs.
McDonald incorporates reading promotion, information skills instruction, and
collaboration with classroom teachers while running an exemplary school library. She
works tirelessly to help answer any question her patrons have and constantly strives to
instill a culture of investigation and love of literature.
“Victoria is a truly exceptional educator. Her vision, knowledge and commitment are a
driving force behind our school’s efforts to increase the literacy skills of all our students.
Victoria has instilled in our school a culture of investigation and love for literature. She
goes out of her way to reach students in a way that is inviting and encouraging. In the
Lasallian spirit, Victoria is a big sister to students and colleagues alike,” said principal
Tom Dudley.
La Salle’s new librarian for the 2010-2011 school year, Collete Cassinelli (photo at
right), received the OASL Joyce Petrie Scholarship for graduate-level coursework in
library media. Cassinelli has taught in Catholic schools for more than 20 years. She
has her masters of educational technology from Pepperdine University and is currently
finishing her library media endorsement from Portland State University. Cassinelli,
a Google-certified teacher, presents workshops at library/technology conferences
such as Northwest Council for Computer Education, the International Society of
Technology in Education, Oregon Association of School Librarians, and the National
Catholic Education Association.

Campus Highlights
Fall 2010 Sports Highlights
For a second consecutive year, La Salle Prep sent five of six fall sports teams to the post-season
and four of the five qualifying teams reached the state-level of competition.
For a fifth consecutive season, the boys’ cross country team won the conference meet and sent
their varsity squad to the OSAA 4A State Championships. Senior Sean O’Hollearn finished
second and all seven La Salle runners finished in the top 16 of the district meet. The Falcons
faced tough competition from Siuslaw and Philomath. The Falcons finished third behind both
schools, and O’Hollearn placed fifth overall with a time of 16:22.
The girls’ cross country team reached the state meet for the first time since 2007 by taking
second place at the district meet. Six of La Salle’s seven harriers finished in consecutive order,
taking the fifth through tenth spots in the meet. All seven runners placed in the top 12 of
the conference meet. Leading the way for the Falcons was sophomore Kelsey Cathcart, who
finished with a time of 21:34. The girls finished tenth at the OSAA 4A State Championships
and Cathcart was La Salle’s top finisher, shaving five seconds off her time at the district meet.
The volleyball team made their third consecutive trip to state by defeating Seaside 3-0 in
the new OSAA play-in round. The Falcons’ first opponent was on the road at Newport. The
Falcons finished off the Cubs 15-12 and reached the state tournament and was paired with
second-ranked Astoria, who lost only three games in 2010. Astoria made quick work of the
Falcons. Then La Salle swept Central in the consolation bracket, falling to Sisters in the 4th/6th
place game taking the 6th place trophy as well as the sportsmanship trophy.
Girls’ soccer faced stiff competition throughout the 2010 season. Defending-state-champion
Gladstone took the new Tri-Valley Conference title, but they were challenged by the Falcons
in each match. La Salle gave Gladstone their lone tie of 2010. The Falcons finished third in the
Tri-Valley Conference and traveled to Seaside. The Seagulls were no match for the Falcons, as
La Salle flew away with the 2-0 win and advanced to the OSAA 4A State Championships. La
Salle traveled to Sisters and fell to the Outlaws 4-0. La Salle finished with a 10-4-3 record.
Under guidance from new Tim Bowman, the varsity football team bounced back from a 2-7
season in 2009 to a 6-4 playoff team in 2010. La Salle won six of their first seven games, and
outscored their opponents 211-26 during a five-game win-streak. The Falcons finished third
in the Tri-Valley Conference and were matched-up with Astoria, the top-ranked team in the
state, prior to their 18-8 loss against Banks. The Falcons shut out Astoria in the second half,
but were unable to score again, losing 27-19.
With nine seniors gone from the 2009 team, La Salle was left with a young boys’ soccer
team in a tough conference. They went 3-0-1 to open the 2010 campaign, but finished 4-6-4
overall and 1-6-3 in the Tri-Valley Conference. The Falcons ended 2010 on a high note, tying
Gladstone 1-1 and beating the Tri-Valley’s second best team, Estacada 4-1 in the final game of
2010.

A Foundation
of
Faith & Family
When La Salle opened its doors in the fall of 1966, the school started to
draw families in the Milwaukie area to a new Catholic school tucked into
the neighborhood. Devoted Catholic families committed to faith-based
education enrolled their children at La Salle, most of them knowing very
little about the Christian Brothers from California. These first families
included William and Fran Keller, who sent their seven children ( Joseph
’72, John ’73, Jim ’74, Paul ’77, Robert ’79, Margaret ’81 and Anne ’84)
to La Salle. Families like the Kellers (pictured above), whose devotion,
enthusiasm and leadership for a new school, ensured the growth and
success of what would later grow into the thriving La Salle Catholic
College Preparatory.
Bill and Fran Keller’s son, John ’73 (senior photo top left), who shares his
parents respect for faith-based education, recalls a newly built La Salle
High School that did not even have a football program until his senior
year. “I think a solid education in our faith is a really important thing in
life,” he explains.
After graduating from La Salle, John attended the University of Portland
and then Lewis & Clark Law School before joining the family’s law firm,
Keller & Keller, PC. When John and Del Keller’s six children (William
’96, David ’97, Patrick ’99, Charlie ’01, Elizabeth ’03, and Angela ’10)
reached high-school age, they joined their cousins (the children of John’s
brother Joseph ’72 and his wife Frances Miller ’71) as Falcons.
William ’96 (above left) earned his MBA from the University of
Portland and is now a CPA for the Army Corps of Engineers. David ’97
(left), who enjoys playing in both the La Salle alumni golf and basketball
tournaments, attended Western Oregon University and then Willamette
Law School. He recalls his time at La Salle, “My fondest memories are of
playing football at La Salle. Both junior and senior year we went to the
state playoffs.” David’s response to La Salle’s campus improvements since
he graduated, “I wish we could have played football on the new field.”
20
Pat ’99 (above left), who earned his BS in Electrical
Engineering from the University of Portland, says his
annual return to campus for the alumni basketball
tournament has allowed him to watch La Salle’s
campus transform, “I was impressed at how much the
facilities have improved.”
Charlie ’01 (second from left), who studied
accounting at the University of Portland, fondly
recalls state basketball tournaments with coach
Cleghorn. “He instilled in us the toughness and work
ethic needed to win basketball games, and ultimately,
to win at life.” Charlie is also grateful for the rigorous
and relevant academics that prepared him for college.
“Academically, I was able to step right into college
courses with success. I think La Salle really puts the
building blocks in place as far as things you need to
know and be able to do in order to be successful, from
writing, mathematics, and critical thinking. Perhaps
more importantly, having a spiritual setting to all this
just tops it off,” he says.
John and Del Keller’s eldest daughter, Elizabeth
’03 (second from right), is engaged to be married
in March 2011 and has worked for Pitney Bowes
for the past three years. Their youngest daughter,
Angela ’10 (above right), whose favorite teacher was
Ms. Milani and favorite class was Advanced Drama,
attends Carroll College with a major in accounting.
She says that Lasallian education prepared her for
college and for life by helping her remember that
she is always in God’s presence. She also says that
her siblings encouraged her to make the most of her
time at La Salle by being active, “They told me to try
to participate in everything and anything you can. I
wouldn’t change my time spent there for anything. I
loved it!”
These legacy Keller children, whose experiences were
very different from one another, attended a school
much more established and cutting-edge than the
school their relatives attended in the 1970’s and
1980’s.
On sharing the La Salle experience with his dad,
Charlie ’01 had this to say, “I always thought it was
kind of cool to be going to the same high school as
my dad. It was fun to think that he used to roam the
halls when he was my age, and, in a sense, I thought it
was neat that we, in a sense, had a shared experience in
attending the same high school.”
Despite the differences in their La Salle experiences,
they don’t find it challenging to see the similarities
in their high school educations. After all, textbooks
are updated, technologies advance, paint is refreshed,
but the guiding Lasallian philosophy remains the
same: “Enter to Learn. Leave to Serve” with teachers
who view themselves as big brothers and sisters to all
students.
“A lot of good people have come through the school.
It’s a great opportunity when you are presented with a
place that can nurture your mind through academics,
your body through sport, and your heart through
the spiritual traditions of the Christian Brothers. It
doesn’t get much better,” Charlie says.
