Life often seems simpler
when we put others into
pigeonholes or categories
that help us de-humanize
them. But when we view
them as a neighbor, or s a
brother or sister in
Christ, it is easier to act
as a follower of Christ.

Reflecting on the Word
Moses tells the people that God’s command is already in their
mouths and hearts. The way Jesus treats the scholar reflects
this. He asks how he reads the law. The scholar knew what to
do. Then Jesus ups the ante with his response to the question,
“Who is my neighbor?” Jesus makes clear that the Samaritan,
who treated the person with mercy, was the neighbor. The
enemy was the neighbor. Who did the scholar ask the question?
We don’t know. We do know that Jesus asks him to stretch his
definition of neighbor and see as god does. Even one’s enemy
is neighbor, for we are all children of God. Someone from the
towns who refused Jesus hospitality models a faithful response.
A retired Marine once told me he was trained never to think
of an enemy as a person. Only by putting someone in a
category — enemy, opponent, evil, or threat — can we
consider dismissing and mistreating other people. When we see
the other as human and like us, mistreatment becomes more
difficult. That’s why it is difficult to eat or pray with someone
who has hurt us. The tension becomes too much, so we leave or
try to reconcile. Our hearts know that we are more alike than
unlike.
Christ came to reconcile all things in himself, making peace
by the blood of his cross. He embraced what was death-dealing
and found life. Signing ourselves with the cross reminds us that
God’s way, difficult as it can be, is as near as our mouths and
hearts. That act invites us to see all people as human, as
neighbor. Show others the mercy that God has given us and
love both God and neighbor.

Destination Devotions
Planning a summer trip? Take along a Scripture passage
befitting your vacation to use for devotions and prayer time.
• In the mountains: “The mountains and hills will burst into
song before you” (Isaiah 55:12).
• At a lake, perhaps on a fishing trip: “They were casting a net
into the lake, for they were fishermen. ‘Come, follow me,’
Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for
people’” (Matthew 4:18-19).
• Near an ocean or river: “Let the sea resound ... let the rivers
clap their hands” (Psalm 98:7-8).
• In the desert: “They looked toward the desert, and there was
the glory of the LORD appearing in the cloud” (Exodus 16:10).
• In the woods: “Blessed is the one ... whose delight is in the
law of the LORD .... That person is like a tree planted by
streams of water, which yields its fruit in season”
(Psalm 1:1-3).
• In the flatlands: “‘My food,’ said Jesus, ‘is to do the will of
him who sent me .... I tell you, open your eyes and look at the
fields! They are ripe for harvest’” (John 4:34-35).
• On a “staycation” close to home: “Love the LORD your
God .... These commandments that I give you today are to be on
your hearts. ... Talk about them when you sit at home and when
you walk along the road .... Write them on the doorframes of
your houses and on your gates” (Deuteronomy 6:5-9).

The Good Samaritan was also a good steward, giving his
time and his treasure to meet his neighbor’s need. At
the end of this familiar story, Jesus urges His bearers –
and us – to go and do the same!
Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Understanding the Word
July 10, 2016
The first reading is taken from the third section of
Deuteronomy, in which Moses offers an extended address to
the people after having revealed the words of the covenant. The
people are called together in order to ratify the covenant that
they have just received. In our reading, Moses emphasizes that
the people are to respond to the law with their whole heart and
being. The “command” is not distant or difficult to understand,
as it has already been recited (“in your mouths,”) and
internalized (“in your hearts,”) Israel has merely to obey and
the blessings of God (land and progeny) will be theirs.
The reading from Colossians is a Christological hymn
evoking images from Wisdom literature. The believers are
exhorted to lead a life worthy of the Lord. The reading
describes the identity of this Lord and his effect. He is
preeminent, and by his blood on the cross, he has effected
reconciliation and peace. The believers are reminded that we
have been reconciled by his death if we continue in faith.
Though the Samaritan towns refuse to offer Jesus hospitality,
Jesus nonetheless uses a parable about a Samaritan as the
example of truly fulfilling the law and therefore assuring
oneself of eternal life. The priest and Levite may have avoided
the wounded man out of concerns for ritual purity. The
Samaritan would have no such limitation. He is described as
responding out of compassion.
He not only attend to the
immediate needs, but also goes
a step further and pays for his
continued care. In Luke, Jesus
expects exemplary ethical
behavior from his disciples.
