Here's How to... Fishing for Trout with
Plugs and Spinners
By Danny Hicks
High dingy water, extreme weather, indifferent fish, and
intense fishing pressure are some factors that make trout
fishing a challenge. It is even more of a challenge if you
are relatively inexperienced, and unfamiliar with the water.
Despite these obstacles you have a good chance for success
with plugs and spinners. This book has plenty of in-depth
information on jig and plug types and the best presentations
for lakes and streams. Detailed illustrations show the best
trout holding spots and how best to entice the fish. Spinners
and plugs work everywhere and are not difficult to use; huge
trout are caught on them every day, now it’s your turn! 3

DEEP-DRIFTED FLY, WITH OR WITHOUT
STRIKE INDICATOR
Using a lightly weighted fly, cast slightly upstream and let the fly drift
naturally downstream with the current. To extend the drift, pay out fly
line as the fly drifts downstream. This can be done with or without a
strike indicator.
2. WET FLY, SWUNG DEEP
Using the same “swinging” technique described above, add heavier flies
and/or sinking lines to get your fly as deep as is necessary to find fish.

world-record sports-caught king salmon and is
therefore famous for large kings, but also has excellent
fishing for three other species of salmon. The allure of huge
king salmon and easy road access makes this a very crowded
river. This is not easy fishing — you don’t catch a king salmon every
day. You will probably catch more salmon from the nearby Kasilof
River or late in the year when coho flood the river. However, catching one
of the brutes from this river makes it all worthwhile.
Fishing and boating regulations are complicated and ever-changing so study the
current regulations before you travel. Motors on boats must not exceed a 50 horsepower rating;
lures and tackle setup are strictly controlled and guides may not fish some days during the week. Fishing may be prohibited
at some times and limits change depending on fish abundance and escapement.
This section of the Kenai River has the highest concentration of motels, lodges, guides and boat launches of any river in Alaska. It also is crowded with
anglers during the prime king salmon season. Advanced reservations are advised. An airport in the town of Kenai has commercial flights, or you may drive
from the lower 48 states or fly to Anchorage and rent a car.
Access to this river is excellent in the town of Soldotna. This town has five parks with extended access to this river, including fishing boardwalks built
along the river with some handicapped access. Two of the parks even have camping.

1. Nymph(S) lightly weighteD
Nymphs are sinking flies that are drifted with the current. Cast well
upstream of the fish you are targeting, and allow the fly to drift naturally
with the current. For lightly weighted nymphs, your fly line should be
buoyant enough to keep the fly from catching on the bottom.

Dry fly, SwuNg
Cast your dry fly across the river and slightly downstream, then let the
current “swing” the fly until it is hanging directly downstream. Take a
couple of steps downstream between casts to cover all of the water where
fish could be holding. The best dry flies for this style of presentation are
buoyant enough to skate along the surface throughout the swing. Adding
a “riffle hitch” to the head of a fly will help keep it riding on the surface. A
riffle hitch is simply a half-hitch that is secured around the head of the fly,
usually about 1/4” behind the eye of the hook.
Nymph DeaD Drift
Cast your dry fly well upstream of a rising fish and let it drift with the
current. Usually, as the fly moves downstream, it is necessary to strip
in excess line to keep slack line to a minimum. When a fish rises to the
fly, set the hook immediately, and keep tension on the fish throughout
the fight.

MATCH THE HATCH!
Hatches
Popular “Hatch Guide” Series continues with . . .
Hatch Guide for Upper Midwest Streams
By Ann R. Miller
In the user-friendly format of the series, Miller discusses the naturals and their behaviors then provides
matching fly patterns and fishing techniques on the opposite page.
Fly tying is a combination of art and science; fly tiers understand the biology and behavior of an
insect, and then imitate it artistically. Color, size, silhouette, and behavior of an artificial are essential,
which is why it’s important to have some knowledge of the local insects. Mayflies, stoneflies, caddisflies,
lesser insects, and crustaceans of the upper Midwest are covered in this book.
Learning to identify insects can be daunting for anyone, but doing so will pay off for you with more
fish. Or . . . you can just get this book! 4 x 6 inches, 348 pages, all-color.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of fly-fishing
is the challenge; however, insect hatches are often
downright mystifying. These hatch guides, by some of
the most respected experts in the fields of entomology
and fly-fishing, will take away some of the guesswork
and frustration, leaving you more time for fishing!

Fly Fishing
Steelhead Dreams: 12-Year Anniversary Edition
by Matt Supinski
When Steelhead Dreams debuted in 2001, it was heralded as the
new “bible” on Great Lakes steelhead fly-fishing. Twelve years later
Matt Supinski is back with a fully updated version of this bestseller.
With global climate change and new aquatic invaders in the Great
Lakes, the river and lake ecosystems have changed drastically—and
so have the steelhead and their runs. Master angler and guide Matt
Supinski spends 300 days a year chasing steelhead so he’s on top of
it. He also discusses new tackle technology; Spey, Skagit & Scandi
casting and fishing; new fly plates with hot new steelhead flies;
pioneering Great Lakes personalities; expands chapters on lake-run
brown trout and the emerging Atlantic salmon fishery in the Great
Lakes. Everyone can learn from one of America’s top steelhead
guides. 8 1/2 x 11 inches, 200 pages, all-color.

Babine
by Pierce Clegg & Peter McMullan
Rivers are sacred and none more so than those that have the holy
trinity of salmon, grizzly bears and steelhead. This book, a collection of tales on fishing, companionship and the power of dreams,
is about one of those special rivers. The Babine, and the lodge
that gave generations of anglers access to the sacred waters, come
to life in these pages. There are some great fishing stories, but this
is far more than a book about fishing. It’s a book about what’s
important in life. It’s a book about a beautiful, wild river and the
dream that it can be saved as it is, forever.
—Mark Hume, from the Foreword

A Woman Alone
Mona Bell, Sam Hill and the Mansion on Bonneville Rock
by John A. Harrison
Mona Bell was the colorful, eccentric mistress of flamboyant entrepreneur Sam Hill,
whose lasting works include the Maryhill Museum and Columbia River Highway. In
1928 Sam built Mona a mansion in the Columbia River Gorge. Three years later,
the government condemned the mansion and her riverfront acreage to build the
Bonneville Dam. Smart and not one to back down, Mona battled the government
in federal court with a former Oregon governor as her attorney and the current
governor as a witness. 6 x 9 inches, 139 b/w pages 16 page color insert.

Blaine Hallock (1889-1953) was born in Heppner,
eastern Oregon and practiced law for many years in
Baker City, eastern Oregon, and elsewhere. He was
enamored of fishing, and especially fly-fishing and
spent many days streamside with other Northwest
fly-fishing pioneers, such as Spencer Biddle and Supreme Court Justice William Douglas. Parts of this
book were originally written almost one hundred
years ago. This historic book speaks of Northwest
and international angling in locations that today are world famous.
This book is an exciting discovery of many of the roots of our sport...
how one intelligent Oregonian experienced the first half of the last century.

The Columbia River is as dangerous as it is magnificent.
How dangerous was it to work and play on the river in
the 1870s-1890s? No radios, helicopters or boats of the
modern Coast Guard rescued the man who was thrown
overboard in the 1800s. Few survived. Salmon Fever is
a collection of historical articles from Astoria, Oregon
newspapers that reveal a frightening past on this famously treacherous river. 6 x 9 inches, 96 pages.
