COMMODORE’S
REPORT
VICE COMMODORE’S
REPORT
By Tom Estlow
By Kelly Cantley
Summer has started even though we're having
some May gray days....and I'm sure June will give
us our usual June Gloom.
But the Club is still getting active. We just
completed our annual Corinthian Cup race with
guest host Redondo Beach Yacht Club. Redondo
puts on a whale of a dinner on Saturday night, and
this year was no exception. If you are a meat eater
and didn't get down to Redondo, then you missed a
cut that was exceptional. Ask the folks that were
there.
Special thanks to race chair Mel Widawski for his
organizing the race and hospitality with RBYC and
for his excellent choice of PRO, in S/C Bob
Kellock. Bob used his "Windfall" as R/C boat and
was ably assisted by Samantha Carlson.
The racing was great fun this year, and thanks to
Jim Doherty for allowing me on "Camelot", with
Maureen Doherty and Robert Symer. We had a
pretty good race with Dylan Porter and "Papalagi",
and we're still trying to figure out Dylan's 'time in
the current' theory.
By the by, it's been mentioned at the dinner
meetings, but just a reminder....all Board meetings
minutes are compiled in the Secretaries notebook
that is stacked in the corner of the back bar. Also,
the Treasurers report is copied and also compiled in
the Treasurer's notebook, stored in the same corner.
If you need to be current with Clubs activities, this
is the place to go.
Hope to see you at the Club soon....come by and
see what's going on.
The racing season is going strong, the usual
suspects are launching every Wednesday and we’ve
seen the regulars plus some new faces on
Thursdays. The white board and magnetic boats are
getting a lot of use on Thursday nights from the
Lido 14 fleet as we work out on the water
situations. Power Play, the Schock 35 I sail on,
skippered by member Steve “Sparkle” Arkle
continues to have a great season placing 2nd in
class at the Newport to Ensenada Race and winning
the Schock 35 class at Yachting Cup in San Diego.
Despite an unfortunate overall finish for the regatta,
Power Play locked up the Schock 35 High Point
trophy for 2009 at Cal Race Week.
The SCCYC culinary efforts for May were
sponsored by the Kenney family. First Friday was
an amazing Italian feast prepared by Pat and Ron
Kenney. The Membership Meeting dinner (which I
hear was so good that I was sad to miss it) was
presented by Tracey Kenney and Kay Miller. Peter
and Francesca Beale have volunteered to do the
First Friday Dinner on June 6th, I’m really looking
forward to it! The Membership Meeting on June
20th still needs a cook. Let me know if you’re
interested.
First Fridays and Membership dinners are a great
way to get together with club members and meet
some of the newest members. If you want to
volunteer a dinner (cook or take out) just let me
know. We’ve got a few dates open, including the
membership dinners this month on June 20th and
next on July 25th. All cooks get to use the VC
parking spot for the day.
See you on the water! — Kelly

REAR COMMODORE’S
BURGEE BOUNTY
By Bruce Fleck
Over the last few
months SCCYC has
garnered a couple of
new and interesting
Burgees. The first was
from Dylan Porter who
traveled to Palau, at
least I think he traveled
there. You should ask him when you see him. By
the way, as you can see anyone who brings in a new
Burgee gets to sit on Trish LaVay’s lap to get their
picture taken.
Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club is
located on the eastern shore of
Australia.
Paul May brought back a
burgee from Royal Cape Yacht
Club, Cape Town SA. I hear he
really got the VIP treatment
when he suggested a burgee swap.
By Kelly Cantley
The SCCYC Lido 14 racing scene has been going
strong since the beginning of the year. We started
our summer Thursday night series, the Sunstroke
Series at CYC at the beginning of May, and even
though we’re a few weeks away it feels like
summer is here. Charles and Joanna Smith and their
“Lido Mosquito” are our up and coming B fleeters
to watch, with a 1st place finish at WD Schock, a 2nd
place at Pete Jefferson and a 1st place at ABYC’s
Memorial Day Regatta it won’t be long until they’re
drummed into the A fleet! Steve Vincent and Annie
Walton Teter on “Ragtime” are making a strong
showing in the Sunstroke Series so far, with two
overall 1st places in May.
We’re looking forward to the Fleet 2 Invitational
on June 16th and want to thank the racers who are
traveling to MDR and all the volunteers from Fleet
2, SCCYC and the Schock 35 fleet for making it
possible. We’d also like to gratefully acknowledge
all our sponsors for their support and awesome
donations; Annapolis Performance Sailing, Double
Wave, Land Shark Lager, Open Sailing Sportboats
and High Performance Gear, Quantum Sails, Red
Pennant Performance Sailing Gear, Sailing Supply,
W.D. Schock Corp, Ullman Sails and West Marine.
Tom and Karm picked
up a much needed Dana
West YC burgee. This is
one of the many So Cal
burgees we are missing.
Matt Schultz brought us the Trans
Ocean Yacht Club burgee. Again, I
am not sure of the story behind
this, did he once belong? Did he visit? You will
have to ask him.

Corinthian Cup Race

who get it wrong. Racers seemed to have much less
trouble finding the other buoys this year. Finally, they
raced to the finish at the entrance to King Harbor.
In the Cruiser Fleet for boats under 30 feet, Meimi II,
a Columbia 24 Challenger skippered by Mike Devine
won the first race by enough to win the combined races
handily. Meimi II trailed Windsong, another Columbia
24 Challenger, by only twelve seconds in the second
race. New to racing Dave Cowardin sailed to a solid
second overall in his Holder 20, X8. Might as Well
skippered by Adolf Liebe managed to correct to third on
combined time.
Taku runs the line prior to Saturday’s start
The race from Marina del Rey to King Harbor and
back drew many of the usual boats and a few new ones
from SCCYC, RBYC, and SFVYC. Last Saturday and
Sunday, May 23rd and 24th 16 boats competed in the
Corinthian Cup race sponsored jointly by South Coast
Corinthian and Redondo Beach Yacht Clubs. This has
always been a fun race with the longest leg a nice reach,
and once again we were blessed with good winds and
beautiful days.
The race actually consisted of two races on separate
days with the times combined. The race down to King
Harbor was followed by a lay over for partying. RBYC
Vice Commodore Craig Miller provided a feast of ribeye steak or lavender chicken Saturday night. RBYC
Rear Commodore Kathi Sheridan arranged for slips for
the stay in King Harbor.
After a restful, if short night’s sleep, the boats all raced
back to Marina del Rey, and the awards party at SCCYC
where Trish LaVay and Karm Estlow provided a
sumptuous spread for the returning racers. Mark Register
pitched in as usual cooking the burgers and dogs. Three
classes provided good competition for Cruisers under 30
feet, Cruisers 30 feet and over, and PHRF boats of all
ratings.
The courses for this annual pilgrimage South started
with a half-mile, mile, or two mile upwind leg
depending on class. Then the boats reached past the 2ES
Buoy and on to the King Harbor “C” mark (or “F”
depending on class) followed by a nice run or broad
reach to the “X” mark. Once again, the “X” mark proved
hard to find for some boats. Finding the correct marks
has long been a hallmark of this race, and a bane to those
Mike Devine celebrates his win on Meimi
In the Cruising 30 feet and over class Christian
Brorsen on his Opus MKII, Taku, combined his
comfortable win on Saturday with a narrow second to
Camelot, sailed by Jim Doherty, on Sunday to win first
place overall in class on combined corrected time.
Camelot held on for second overall in the class, followed
by perpetual winner, Dylan Porter on Papalagi, who
held on for third in class.

Race Committee preparing to finish yachts on
Sunday
For the second year in a row Al Castillon brought
Nitro, a J33, to finish first in class and maintained his
position on corrected time in the PHRF class. Don
Hedges’ Turn Key parlayed a third and second into
overall second place in this class, ahead of Jerome
Sammarcelli who sailed Semi-Aquatic to a combined
third place.
Thanks especially to Robert Kellock the PRO who
also furnished the Committee Boat and to Samantha
Carlson and Barbara Widawski for their Race
Committee work.
This race remains a favorite for all who participate.
Summer OD Duty? Why Not
Have a Party?
By Kelly Cantley
Member Steve "Sparkle" Arkle made a record bar
drop of $510 at the end of his OD shift on Friday June
19th. The secret to his record setting drop! Spark
invited a bunch of sailors to come hang out at the club.
Kim Stuart put on a barbeque and voila! The club was
jam packed all night.
Think you can beat his record? Why not use your OD
shift to invite your friends and sailing buddies to come
and hang out at SCCYC. It's perfect balcony weather!
And we’ll brag about your clobbering of Power Play in
the next newsletter.
