Volunteers
Thank you to our vast army of volunteers.
Your contributions are truly appreciated and we could not do it without you!
Artists
A special thank-you goes out to Lethbridge’s creative community.
Thank you for your dedication and hard work- you truly enhance our city
with your talent.
Message from the Honourable
Lindsay Blackett,
Minister of Culture and Community Spirit
As Minister responsible for arts and culture in Alberta, it is my
pleasure to welcome all artists and art lovers to Lethbridge’s
Alberta Arts Days celebrations.
Alberta Arts Days is a celebration of all that is best about Alberta. Every artistic discipline is
welcome, every medium, every single style, every cultural influence. Together they create
a picture of what we Albertans believe, that from a wealth of tradition and perspectives we
can build a stronger community for an even better future.
Lethbridge’s Alberta Arts Days celebrations exemplify this spirit. Whether it is the Artwalk,
ABFEST, Arts Fest or one of the many other events in town, Lethbridge is alive with the
creative spirit that is the hallmark of Alberta’s greatest desires and successes.
I would like to extend my thanks to the organizers, sponsors and volunteers of all of
Lethbridge’s Alberta Arts Days events for their vision and hard work in putting together this
year’s celebrations. It is no doubt a labour of love, and the labour is much appreciated.
Happy Alberta Arts Days!
Lindsay Blackett
Minister of Culture and Community Spirit
MLA, Calgary-North West
Message from His Worship
Mayor Bob Tarleck
I believe it is significant that our recently-approved Municipal Sustainability Plan describes the arts as one of
the core components of our future. If Lethbridge is a
vibrant, creative community, it is in large part because artistic and cultural activities are the
basis of many of our events and celebrations. The City’s commitment to an early start on
a new community arts centre in the heart of our city is just one example of the importance
our citizens ascribe to the arts. This property has also been identified as the preferred site
for a future performing arts building. For a number of years Edmonton described itself as,
“The City of Champions.” Perhaps Lethbridge might consider describing itself as, “The City
of Artists, Weavers, Dancers, Musicians, and Writers.”

Message from
Barb Cunningham,
President, Allied Arts Council Lethbridge
The Allied Arts Council is proud that Lethbridge has been
selected as one of five centres designated by the Province as a ‘Flagship City’ for Arts Days 2010. We are also
very pleased to partner with our arts community to present Arts Days festivities.
The ‘Arts Days’ weekend will include activities such as the
ribbon cutting ceremony marking the grand re-opening
of the Southern Alberta Arts Gallery and Aboriginal Fest
2010 presented by the Blackfoot Cultural Society.
As a follow-up to the very successful ‘In the Shadow of
the Bridge’ Festival held in September, 2009, the Allied
Arts Council is also pleased to be enhancing our annual
ArtWalk event with a new performance focused event Arts Fest. There will be something for everyone at Arts
Fest - demonstrations, kids’ activities, musicians, poets,
dancers, filmmakers, visual arts and aboriginal arts.
We believe that Arts Days is an ideal opportunity to support our mission of providing leadership in advancing and
enhancing the arts in Lethbridge. We encourage you to
participate in Arts Days events and enjoy the diversity of
talent in our community.

Opening Celebrations
Friday, September 17: 9 am: Ribbon Cutting
Saturday, September 18: 9 to 11 am – Pancake Breakfast
It was a blustery day in May as we watched the wrecking crew tear through the middle of
the Southern Alberta Art Gallery. We stood transfixed as the center portion of our beloved
home was reduced to a pile of shattered brick, broken glass and twisted steel. Though
bittersweet, this was a day of celebration, and the start of a major renovation and expansion project that would see SAAG transformed over the year to come.
Lethbridge architectural firms Ferrari Westwood Babits and Savill Group Architecture
joined forces to re-imagine the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, and local construction firm
RBG Construction was awarded the project in April 2009. Features of the expansion and
reconfiguration include: a new classroom and library with generous windows onto Galt
Gardens, a multi-media/video viewing gallery, as well as the addition of state-of-the-art
lighting, sound and projection equipment. More project highlights include: a light-filled
gathering space that intersects the building from the two story glass-clad entrance to the
windows on the park beyond, and barrier-free access throughout.
Our Grand Opening coincides with Lethbridge’s Art Walk, Alberta Arts Days and the
nation-wide Culture Days. The inaugural exhibition, On Your Marks celebrates a diversity
of relationships between artists, institutions and communities. Artists working in pairs or
groups will investigate ideas of mentorship and intergenerational influences with site-specific installations and new work produced especially for this exhibition.
All events held at the newly renovated gallery at 601 - 3 Avenue S in Galt Gardens Park.

Galt Gardens Park: Downtown Lethbridge
The loss of the Children’s Festival Society 5 years ago has created a
lull in family focused entertainment in Lethbridge, namely in the summer
months. With 10,000 people in attendance for the last Children’s Festival,
it is apparent that interest in these happenings is strong. The Allied Arts
Council is happy to include the Wind City Kids Festival Society to ArtsFest;
and are excited at the opportunity to bring a renewed sense of family festivities to Lethbridge.
