Project purpose and brief summary
Nampa Idaho takes great pride in the many ways we provide for our youth. Along with
our city Parks and Recreation our club provides a wonderful 25 acre, 7 football field, 2 baseball
diamond facility for our kids.
As a club, we are proud of all of the little football players in our program. However, after
looking closely at the youth served, we noticed we were mostly serving boys. We actively
encouraged girls to play, but many just weren’t interested in playing football. Most families
include boys and girls as well as different ages. With each project, we try to include the whole
family.
Our solution was to create a Cheerleading program. Many of the Dads coach the team
their son plays on. Now Mom and Sisters can participate by being in the Cheerleader program.
We enjoy the fact that many entire families participate on the teams. We even have a playground
facility at the fields and usually have an inflatable jumpy house.
Cheerleading is great training for Public Relations. This program helps train these young
leaders for tomorrow. Every business in America needs a good Cheerleader in the Public
Relations (PR) department.

Relevant publicity and promotions
Printed Press:
The Idaho Press Tribune (IPT) provided free Public Service Announcements. The IPT
attends many of our events and publishes great articles and pictures, often on the front page of
different sections.
This year we purchased some advertising as well. This gives us better control of the dates
and sections of the paper our articles appear.
The Idaho Statesman from Boise (our state capital), also provides some coverage for our
events.
Our web site (www.nampaoptimist.org) is used by our members for scheduling and
scores. It has also brought much attention to our club from those looking for football or
cheerleading in our valley.
Outside organizations assisting or cooperating
The Nampa Optimist Football program receives fantastic support from our community.
At Cheer Camp this year, we had High School Cheerleaders from Nampa High and
Skyview High help train our little cheerleaders.
Our cheerleaders also participated in Parade America. This year, the use of a Semi
Tractor with a Flat Bed trailer and a 1961 Thunderbird (in excellent condition) was donated.
Once we added all the kids in between, we provided about 300 feet of the parade.
Decorating our float was a balloon arch donated by The Talking Balloon and hay bales
and other decorations from the Thoren family and Bud Collins. Treinen Construction donated a
giant bell (liberty bell) and Wal-Mart donated a couple hundred pounds of candy. Dominos
donated pizza.
We have 24 head coaches (all optimists), each with 3-6 assistant coaches, 24 team moms,
and about 450 little football players.
Community benefits
The Nampa Optimist Football program strives to teach all of its Football Players and
Cheerleaders the importance of teamwork, dedication, and responsibility. These are all assets the
kids can take with them into other areas of their lives. They can put these ideas to work at home,
school, church, or wherever necessary.
Growing a great bunch of kids is so much better than fixing adults later.
5
Club benefits
The Club members work hard to support Nampa Optimist Football and now the Nampa
Optimist Cheerleading program. We see both parts of the program as a vehicle to reach a great
deal of our community's youth.
These programs also attract quality new members to the Club. This year, we added 20
(net) members to our club.
Our football program makes the Nampa Optimist Club very visible in our community.
Nampa Optimist members are known as "can do" people. The Mayor chose us for the annual
“Service Club Award” a few years ago. While reading a long list of things various service clubs
do for our community, we realized that the Nampa Optimist members do many of these things,
even though we have at least 18 civic groups in Nampa.
Nampa Optimist members are often asked to fill positions and duties that they may not
otherwise get the opportunity to do. Our Optimist club provides a great vehicle for personal
growth.
Thus, the Optimist Club is seen as an important service club in the community. Its
members gain personal satisfaction from seeing the kids succeed in the football program. Also,
members learn new skills and get opportunities they may not have if they were not involved.
Reason for selecting the activity
When we started our football program in 2000, we wanted to fill a niche in our
community. Each time we critique our project, we look for kids not being served. In 2001, it
became apparent that while we allow girls to play football, few actually wanted to play.
The simple solution? Start a cheerleading program. Our football program is successful
because we allow every kid to play. We aren’t as concerned about wins or losses as much as
participation. Therefore, our cheerleading program works the same way.
We let every kid who signs up, be a cheerleader. Many other cheerleading programs cut
out kids until they have an elite squad of a half dozen. We keep them all, and find that they get
better with time. It is incredible to watch these girls blossom from the boost to their confidence
and self esteem the Cheerleading program brings.
Our little cheerleaders have a side benefit of creating a happy environment for the
spectators. We often read in the papers about big problems at sporting events. Our cheerleaders
lighten up the moods so everybody can just have more fun!
Club members’ personal evaluation of project
Come out to the park and you can see 3000-4000 people each weekend watch 800-1200
kids play football and 200-400 cheerleaders cheering. The compliments we receive each weekend
from kids, parents, people in the community and community leaders are overwhelming.
We started our Cheerleading program several years ago. We met with some resistance
from other teams in the program, but now, it seems every club involved in the program wants to
have cheerleaders.

Our Cheerleading program has several activities, some directly needed for success. Some
other activities are done to be more successful and for the kids to have fun.
Our first important activity is sign-ups. These are essential to the program as we establish
who the kids are in this project.
Parade America is a fun thing we do. It does provide us with some great public relations
with the community. As this occurs during the weeks we are doing sign-ups, this does contribute
to our success at sign-ups.
Mandatory parents’ meetings establish our schedule and makes sure everybody knows the
rules. Often, the adults can be much more of a problem than the kids. This helps us set the
attitudes for our program. These meetings also provide us a time to introduce the fund raiser and
pass out equipment.
Cheer Camp is a fun time for all of our cheerleaders. Many might call this training, but
it’s done in such a fun way. We bring in local high school cheerleaders as our trainers.
Everybody wins from this association.
The jamboree is the time all the little football players get their official weights to
determine if they fit on the team they are on. It also provides time for getting team pictures and
play a little football on the artificial turf at the big stadium. Recently, the cheerleaders have been
included in the pictures and they get to cheer their team.
The Football Games are the ultimate goals of this program. It’s so exiting, we have about
4000 people visit our fields every Saturday, just to watch and play.

Press coverage
Kenny Wroten, our Publicity Director has done a great job with the press. The Idaho
Press Tribune is our local Nampa newspaper. They know Kenny well. Some people claim he has
his own desk at the newspaper.
The Idaho Statesman is the newspaper in Boise (our state capital). They are starting to
notice us too.
The following articles represent just the most appropriate press to this project.

Long, drawn-out compliment for IPT
It's kind of embarrassing -- tootin' your own horn, so to speak. But the
"thank you" was so sweet. And there was a whole bunch of effort in it, too. That's
why we're featuring the photo today of those really wonderfulOptimist Football
cheerleaders and advisors and their self-explanatory banner.
Here's the story: "I am
the Cheer Coordinator for the
Nampa Optimist Football
program and have served as
cheer advisor for the past few
years," Carrie Clark wrote.
"And I have always picked up
my banner paper from the
Idaho Press-Tribune for $3 a
roll.
"This year I decided I wanted to equip all of our cheer advisors with their
own supply of banner paper. So I called the IP-T and told them my story. I was put
on hold for a few minutes and then a lady picked-up and told me that the newspaper
would donate ALL the banner paper for the program -- 20 rolls!
"We just wanted to thank the Idaho Press-Tribune for its kindness and generosity!"
... Guess all that's left to say then is "You're welcome!"
And if you love seeing youth football, I happen to know where there will be some
great games played. Try the Nampa Optimist Park on Saturdays from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

Internet Website coverage
Michael Gray has spent hours working on our web site at http://www.nampaoptimist.org.
This web site not only provides information about our club, but also doubles as historical
documentation of what our club has done over the years. It currently prints out to about 190
pages, and growing.
We show up in the top ten, on search engines for so many words relating to our
endeavors. The phrase “Nampa Optimist” is quickly becoming a much searched subject on the
internet. The page has become a source of information for our Optimist programs. Even nonOptimists or other members of the Optimist Football program know our page has information
they need.

Sign-Ups
Sign-ups are done
on 7 different occasions to
give every parent a chance
to sign up, even with
different schedules.
Sign-ups for
Cheerleaders are done at
the same time as Football
sign-ups. Parents can bring
in all the kids at once.
We have different
forms for Cheerleaders.
After all, the uniforms are
different.
Advisor Training
May through July,
we have several mandatory
meetings and training for
Coaches and Cheer
Advisors by the Football
Executive Committee.
Each team has the
flexibility to provide their
own ideas, but some things
need to be standard. These
meetings are also a great
opportunity for coaches
and cheer advisors to learn
from each other.
Post Card Schedule for all parents, coaches and kids

Parade America
In May, Nampa
Idaho has Parade America.
Each year, the Nampa
Optimist Cheerleaders put
together a float. This year,
our procession stretched
about 300 feet.
Parade America is
not only a lot of fun, but
Nampa Optimist Float in Parade America
also a great opportunity to
market our program. We had a great float this year. The foundation was a semi flat bed trailer.
The decorations resembled a football field complete with lines, blocking dummies and lots of
kids. The front of the float had a giant liberty bell. We had a giant red, white and blue balloon
arch lengthwise over the top.
The parade was led
by a classic Thunder Bird,
with the semi, covered with
kids, following. In between,
were more kids. Behind
were even more kids. We
have about 600 kids to
choose from so we usually
have plenty of kids.
Nampa Optimist Float rolling through downtown
While we were parading, the kids and Optimist
members are throwing out candy, cups and flyers. Each item
advertises our program. Every single piece of candy has our
sticker.
Over the last few years, our float has become a favorite
and has even won prizes for best design.

Meetings for Parents, Coaches, Cheer Advisors
Code of Conduct, Equipment Handout & Touchdown Fund-Raising Cards
In August, we spend the second week doing mandatory meetings for Parents with the
Coaches and Cheer Advisors. Since we have more people than the park can hold, we set up 5
week nights each with a different team. This makes crowds and parking more manageable.
The first goals of these meetings are to set attitudes for the season. Sportsmanship and
fair play is an important aspect of our programs. We have established a “Code of Conduct” for
our fields.
15
Like most youth sporting events, the kids know how to have fun. Unfortunately, many
adults have forgotten how to just have fun. The kids can actually teach the adults how to do this.
Equipment handouts are an exciting time. Every kid wants their uniforms. This helps
ensure that every kid and parent show up for these meetings. We keep close inventories on all of
the pads, helmets, jerseys, pom poms, skirts and other equipment. Coaches also receive their bags
of blocking dummies, footballs and tees.
The touchdown card is our fund raiser. The cost of the game is much more than the $60
we charge each player and cheerleader. The touchdown cards do more than just raise money. It
also provides the kids with valuable leadership training and hands on development toward
understanding economic principals.
Cheer Camp
The third week in
August is Cheer Camp.
Cheer camp is a really
exciting time for the girls.
They all get together for 2
hours every night for a
week. They learn the basic High school cheerleaders teaching Nampa Optimist Cheerleaders
cheers, forms and most of
all how to smile and have enthusiasm.
The Cheer Committee went to a couple of the local high schools to recruit cheerleaders to
train our young cheerleaders. To our delight, the entire cheer squads from both schools come and
even have a bit of competition between each other to teach our girls the best cheers.
Our younger girls really look up to these “older” girls. These high school girls become
their heroes. Our program is having a profound influence, not only for our little cheerleaders, but
now the high school girls now have more of an image to live up to.
Jamboree
The jamboree is an annual event for
weighing football players and getting
pictures taken. The kids get to play and
cheer on the famous blue and orange astroturf at Boise State University Stadium.
Another thrill for all the kids.
The stadium and parking lot are
packed with little football players and
cheerleaders. Must be about 3700 of them
when all the teams get together from
Optimist clubs in southwest Idaho.
16
Football Games
Of course, the ultimate goal of our
program, is to cheer the players to play football.
Each and every kid gets to play or cheer. The
parents get to watch, the coaches get to coach and
the cheer advisors get to cheer advise. We have
about 4000 people go through our park every
Saturday for 7 weekends.
