Raging Rivers would like to thank

Over the past year, we have added and
renovated many aspects of Raging Rivers
to accommodate our patrons’ needs.
Raging Rivers has something for everyone,
from the Sandbar Concessions to satisfy
your hunger, a free-flowing man-made
endless 850-foot waterway “Lazy River”
with everything from calm, relaxing waters
to thrilling waves and an interactive Aqua
Play Unit/Kiddie Swimming Area features
geysers, water cannons and waterslides
just for the little ones. Raging Rivers’ slides
tower 66 feet over the waterpark. Two
speed slides provide the ultimate thrill
and two 45-foot high tube slides provide
a constant rush of water over your body
with each curve and bend of the slide.
Raging Rivers is 15 years old, and for
7 of those years, the Mandan Park
District has owned the facility! Raging
Rivers is located at 2600 46th Ave. SE
in Mandan and operated by Kara Haff,
Raging Rivers Manager. The waterpark is
open daily from 11am – 8pm during its
three month season, weather permitting.

The selection of an engagement ring is often
paralleled to purchasing a first car or saving
a down payment for a first home. When
emotionally preparing to pop the question,

strengths and weaknesses. Developed over
time, she now finds the staff works cohesively;
they gel.
From vintage and traditional engagement
rings to contemporary or solitary, staff will
then carry in a few options from the vault.
Together, their outcome could be swift or
may develop into designing the perfect ring
for her. In the process, they strive to build a
relationship that will ultimately end in the
purchase of a ring – however, they are not
driven to upsell or pressure in any way. Rather,
Schumacher staff strives to find that ring she
mentioned having seen online, or the one she
described to him.
“These young men come to us filled with
angst. They just want to get this right,” Cathy
said. “They often come with a budget and
we work around that, encouraging that it’s
about having made the decision to ask her to
spend the rest of her life with him. If it’s not
the ring for the rest of their lives, down the
road they may return to have us help them
upgrade, potentially using the engagement
diamond in a necklace. We are not exclusive
to engagement rings; additionally, we provide
options for earrings, necklaces and gifts,
carrying gold, diamonds and colored stones.”
Cathy joined her husband in the family
business 12 years ago. A registered nurse
at the time, she was drawn to support the
business, with little previous knowledge of
diamonds, jewelry or sales. And while there
was a learning curve, she embraced it whole
heartedly, utilizing her strengths in creativity
to support the design process as well as her
nurturing side to develop lasting relationships
with her clients. One of her initial challenges

Schumacher Diamond Direct spans more
than 6 decades of diamond expertise. From
purchasing to cutting and setting, Barney
Schumacher has carried this side of the
business from the start. Barney’s father owned
a jewelry store in downtown Bismarck while
he was a youth. He assisted his father with
various jeweler tasks, such as clock repair,
polishing and sizing. Before he knew it,
Barney was prepared to make a career choice
that drew from his childhood experiences;
he chose to become a diamond cutter. His
journey took him through an apprenticeship
followed by working directly with aboriginal
miners in South America. He found his way
back to his father’s shop in Bismarck, where
together they grew the existing business. His
father manufactured his own tri-colored
gold as Schumacher developed cutting edge
methods of cutting diamonds.

Today, the shop exists in south Bismarck,
where the building houses both the retail
business and the diamond cutting business.
Over time, he cut diamonds for more than
3000 accounts across the country; today
his staff continues to cut diamonds for
thousands of jewelers accounts, a number
that is constantly evolving. Barney runs the
back office for the store; however, these
days, he relies upon experienced
cutters and staff to carry out
the business, entrusting care
of the sales and front office
to Cathy. In many cases, she’s
between the vault and private
showing room, and in others,
she’s planning and designing
customized jewelry. “These
pieces are developed over time, together
with the client,” Cathy said. “Once the
design is complete, the drawings are
submitted to a company that specializes
in casting the piece. We focus on
diamond cutting with state-of-the-art
equipment in our office, and prefer to
outsource this component to those with
high tech capabilities. Once the piece is
back to us, we set the diamond on site.”
Further, Schumacher repairs, resizes,
cleans and upgrades — often within
the same day.
“Our business wouldn’t be as
successful if it weren’t for the
tremendous support of our clients
as well as their referrals,” Cathy
said. “Additionally, I recognize the
significance of my staff ’s role in
our success! This Best of the Best
Award encourages us to continue to grow our
business to provide the best customer service

Homer and Gladys Royse. Today it remains

The Toasted Frog

HONORABLE MENTION: GIRL’S NIGHT OUT
In December 2010, Jonathan Holth and
Shawn Clapp opened The Toasted Frog in
Bismarck, bringing with them the best martini in town. This is the fifth year that The
Toasted Frog has received the honor of Best
Martini. Manager David Hager discusses the
importance of having a consistent martini
that people can depend upon: “It’s just a
lot of hard work. For me, consistency is the
key. You never really know when someone
is experiencing their first one from you. It’s
all about consistency and doing them well
every single time.”
The Toasted Frog’s management works hard
to ensure they provide the best for their
customers, “All of our bartenders have tons
of experience, years upon years of experience, which you don’t get too many different places.” The pressure of making 150
martinis a night can be difficult for many,
so experience is essential. “Staying on top of
your game, more so mentally than physically, being able to rattle off recipes in your
head and execute them into a glass right
now is what makes us good at doing them.”
The Toasted Frog offers a unique atmo-
sphere and menu to its customers. “When I
think of The Toasted Frog I think of a kind
of upscale place that’s not uptight,” Hager
says. He explains that there is something
on the menu for everyone, no matter how
much or how little a customer wishes to
spend. The staff is proud of the originality of the bar and restaurant. “Our kitchen
prepares nearly everything in house. All
of our drinks are our own recipes that we
made up.”
Besides Best Martini, The Toasted Frog was
excited to receive Honorable Mention for
Best Girls’ Night Out. The restaurant provides an excellent private dining room often
used for bachelorette parties, which Hager
credits for receiving this honor.
Wine dinners are another popular event
offered by The Toasted Frog. “We have wine
makers come in and present their wine and
walk around to talk to customers.” Beer dinners have also been successful in the past.
The Toasted Frog is also involved in several
charitable events including Purses and
Pearls. In the past, they have also provided
a tent at Urban Harvest and other Bismarck
street festivals.
The restaurant’s management focuses on
details to set themselves apart from other
restaurants. All their servers are very well
trained on wine service, dinner presentation, and proper plating. Hager points out
that this is not something you will get at
other businesses. They are also particularly
proud of the food freshness they provide
their customers. “If you order a sandwich,
we made the bread; we seasoned the meat;
we cut the vegetables that go on it, which is
pretty unique. Not many people do that.”
The Toasted Frog is constantly trying new
recipes and attempting to provide the
best for their customers, while providing
something new at the same time. “We also
have three nightly dinner specials that our
chef comes up with daily, so every time you
come into The Toasted Frog, you can have
something different.”
The Toasted Frog is thrilled to receive this
