A Note from our President…

SUMMER UPDATE
Summer is approaching quickly and many of our large events are completed until fall,
when we start again with our annual car show at Fox Lake Park. As most of you are aware,
the SPCA would not be where it is today if it weren’t for you, our supporters: volunteers
who help us out in every facet of the day-to-day operations, as well as at our events; our
wonderful donors who assist us financially in the care of our animals; and our employees,
who happily come to work every day to do what needs to be done, always with a smile on
their faces. It is an honor to be part of this organization.
A supporter called me with a brilliant idea. She mentioned that should you want to
donate one time, monthly, quarterly, etc., that you could do it through Bill Pay with your
credit union or bank. No fees are charged; the institution sends a check for whatever
amount you request. Very easy and simple.
Since we don’t receive any financial help from the city, county, state or federal governments, we rely solely on donations, whether it be through estate planning, stocks, CD’s, or
cash. Below are some statistics showing where your money is going:
Since March 20, 2014, we have adopted out more than 900 cats from our Merritt
Island Mall Adoption Center
Since November 2013, we have adopted out nearly 1400 cats from our Melbourne
Square Mall Adoption Center
Since opening our low cost spay/neuter clinic in 1999, we have fixed nearly
63,000 animals!
Our shelter cats stay with us an average of 39.4 days before finding a good home
Our shelter dogs stay with us an average of 37.4 days before finding a good home
It costs the SPCA approximately $10 per day to take care of each dog or cat in our
shelter.
Since opening our new shelter in August, 2014, through mid-April this year, we
have taken in nearly 3,900 cats and dogs – about 800 coming from municipal kill
shelters! That equates to saving nearly 190 animals a month, each of the last
21 months!
FUN FACT, BUT TRUE — With the growing number of dogs in this country, it is important for owners to pick up their pet’s waste. To put it in perspective, there are estimated
to be 74 million dogs depositing 20,000 tons of waste every single day in the US alone.
Need I say more! Please pick up after your pets to save our environment and to promote responsible pet ownership thereby removing impediments to dogs being more
widely accepted.
Have a safe summer – remember to not leave your dog in the car, even if you are going
to be shopping for just a few minutes. If someone sees your dog in a hot car, you take a
chance of a window being smashed to save your dog.

From our Executive Director
Loving Life at the SPCA!
When people think of an animal shelter, it is not
usually at the top of their list of favorite places to
visit. In many cases the pictures of starving dogs and abandoned
cats flooding our TV screens from national organizations give people
the wrong ideas about what to expect in a well-run shelter. We think
that the Brevard SPCA shelter residents, both human and animal,
enjoy their days much more than the average person might think!
Since moving to our new shelter location at 6035 Sisson Road,
Titusville, the dogs and cats have enjoyed a much better life than we
were ever able to provide in our cramped former location. The cats
have 8 spacious free-roaming rooms to make friends in, as well as
separate areas for moms with kittens, sick cats and cats in transition
from a home to the shelter. We have a large group of volunteers that
entertain and socialize our cats daily and make sure that there is no
lack of a human’s touch in their lives. Cats are stressed by significant
change in routine and especially vulnerable to illness when this
occurs. The volunteers we have are important in helping to establish
a peaceful environment that will represent the new “normal” for cats
just coming to the shelter. A few days of consistent quiet attention
and grooming does wonders for bringing a stressed cat back to
feeling comfortable in the shelter environment.
Our dogs have really gotten a great place to wait for a new home
at the 6035 location. We have multiple play yards that allow 8 or
more dogs to be out in the exercise yards at the same time with
plenty of space to run and smell. We also have established dog
play groups with 10 or more dogs (under staff supervision) playing
together out in one yard. The dogs that don’t get out with other
dogs are frequently walked throughout the day by our wonderful
volunteers or staff. There is plenty of off-road walking space around
this new facility that allows for this and also provides an opportunity
to train dogs who do not know how to walk on a leash (we get way
too many of these). On
weekends, when we are
closed for longer hours,
we now have a core
group of volunteers and
a couple of employees
who come in at night
and get the dogs out of
their kennels for a walk
before going to sleep, a
luxury we never enjoyed
at our old location
and a really fantastic
thing for our dogs. We
could never have done
this without sincerely
caring volunteers and
employees.
One of the most
notable things about
working in a no-kill
animal shelter has got to
be the incredible people
that you share your
work day with! There
is a sense of common
purpose in our lives at
the shelter, we have
a collective belief in the sanctity of life and are grateful to be able
to spend our days in the company of loving animals. While there
will always be sadness injected into our lives due to illness, injury
and death, it is far outweighed by the enormous amount of joy we
receive from the animals in our care.
Visit our shelter, pet a dog, groom a cat, volunteer to help and
experience the joy that comes with knowing you have made a
difference in the life of one of God’s creatures! x

Summer 2016
From the SPCA Wellness Clinic
SPCA Full Service Clinic is Changing for the Better
As our clinic has grown
tremendously over the last 15
years, so has our staff. The SPCA
clinic is pleased to announce that Dr. Nermin
Massoud has accepted the position as our new
Medical Director. Prior to joining our team,
Dr. Massoud generously donated her time as
a volunteer helping to spay and neuter our
shelter animals. Dr. Massoud officially came on
staff in September 2010 as a relief veterinarian
and ultimately came on board as a full-time
veterinarian. She is very dedicated to her
patients and gives her all to ensure they get
the best care possible. We are very proud to
have her as our New Medical Director.
Amanda Tacina joined the SPCA family
in 2010. She began working at the SPCA
Clinic in our reception area. Amanda then
spent time working in cat adoption and dog
adoption giving daily care and attention to
our shelter animals and assisting our adopters
with new adoptions. She found herself back
in the clinic after the opening of our call
center and eventually worked her way up to
our administrative assistant. Amanda’s quick
knowledge and dedication to her job has
given her the opportunity to become our
new Operation’s Manager. We are thrilled that
she has accepted this new position.
Rebecca Thompson has been working at
the SPCA since September 2007. She began
in adoption, and worked there for a year
before moving to the clinic Pharmacy. She
quickly excelled as a veterinary technician
and became Lead Pharmacy Tech in 2011.
She accepted the position of Scheduling
Coordinator in 2012 where she has worked
since. She has excelled in each department as
a team player and her motivation and positive
attitude makes her an excellent choice as the
new Staff Manager.
Congratulations ladies!
Remember the summer months are fast
approaching. Enjoy the convenience of
waiting in a cool and comfortable lobby
at our Walk-In Clinic. Here you can get low

Volunteers:
The Lifeblood of the SPCA
V
olunteer. The dictionary defines the word as “a person who freely
offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task,” but most
of the volunteers I have come to know and care about are so
much more than that definition.
Many volunteers come in looking for community service hours for
college or scholarships or a way to fill in some free time when they retire.
They go through the orientation classes, and then they begin working
with the animals, and that’s when the magic happens. Some of these
new volunteers who only planned to come in once a week are there
two or three times a week. Students who only needed 20 hours have
suddenly collected 500 hours. These volunteers discover a passion
for helping to get a dog or cat adopted, watching the work they’ve
done with a dog make a difference in their behavior, or bottle feeding
kittens that wouldn’t have a chance without human intervention. I
get to see so many volunteers grow and blossom into these amazing,
passionate animal advocates. For example, there was Caleb who came
in to get community service hours for Eastern Florida State College – he
decided he wanted to work with the dogs. After a couple of weeks or
so, I started seeing Caleb there almost every day, and those 20 hours
he needed for class soon grew to 100, 200, then 300. He became a Bark
Buddy Supervisor, someone who mentors and helps teach new Bark
Buddies, and shortly after that, he was hired at the Adoption Center.
And then there’s Dave – a man who wanted to help out in his spare
time. He, too, decided to volunteer with the dogs, and almost every
afternoon, without fail, Dave is there walking dogs. He has only
been volunteering for six months, but he has almost hit the 400 hour
mark. When I see him out walking the dogs, he is always happy and

smiling. He brings so much joy to his volunteer position, and it is really
beautiful to see.
And while I chose just two volunteers to highlight in this article,
there are so many others that have been volunteering with us for
years – C.C. and Brenda who spend so much time with the cats and
kittens, Lisa and Dawn who have fostered more dogs, puppies, cats,
and kittens than I can count. Volunteers are more than a definition in
the dictionary; they are the epitome of altruism and caring, and we at
the SPCA salute each and every one of them. x

Things you Didn’t Know about Dogs
by Angie Friers
Long Hair Is In:
Did you know that veterinarians do not recommend shaving a dogs’ fur in the summer
because it can make them hotter? Fur helps to regulate a dog’s body temperature by
protecting a dog’s body from excessive heat gain. Fur acts as a shield for protection
from the heat of summer. As a shield, fur blocks sun and heat from reaching a dog’s
skin, which slows heat absorption.

Dogs Can Read Your Face:
Research shows that dogs are the only animals
in the animal kingdom that can read the
emotions on your face much like humans. In
other words dogs can tell at a glance if we are
happy, angry or sad just by looking at our faces.
Dogs Don’t Like Second Hand Smoke:
A number of studies have indicated that dogs
face health risks when exposed to the toxins in
secondhand smoke which include respiratory
problems, allergies and even nasal and lung cancer.
Heirs to The Fortune:
In the United States,
around 1 million dogs
are primary beneficiaries
of their owner’s will.

Dogs See In Color:
It’s a common misconception that dogs
are completely color blind and can
only see in black and white. The truth
however is that a dog can see colors,
just not as vivid or rich as we can.
Noseprint Identity:
Just as humans can be identified by their
fingerprints, dogs can be identified by their
nose prints because like human fingerprints
a dog’s nose print is unique to that dog.
Valedictorians:
Most dogs are capable
of understanding up
to 250 words and
gestures.
8
Junk Food Junkies:
The main health
problem for dogs
is obesity.
Love Is In The Eyes:
Japanese researchers found that when a dog stares at its human, levels of a hormone called
oxytocin rise. This squirt of oxytocin, known as the “love hormone” for its role in parent-child
bonding, encourages the human to gaze longer. This then triggers a squirt of oxytocin in the
dog, creating a feedback loop of happiness and connection.
Hugs Are For Humans:
Dogs don’t like hugs, which are more
likely to raise their stress levels than
show them affection or bonding the
way humans interpret it, according to
findings in Psychology Today.

Movers and Shakers
Planned Giving
to Make a Difference
IRA Charitable Rollover
T
he Movers and Shakers of this world are those that see an opportunity, or a need,
and just jump in to do something about it. Rick and Lisa Lewis are such people.
Having won a battle against large corporations trying to muscle independent business
owners out of the way, Rick was well prepared to defend healthy cats in shelters from
being needlessly euthanized, and Lisa was ready to help.
Rick’s love of cats began as a teenager when his family brought home a kitten. Rick
and the kitten developed a strong bond that lasted through the years and grew into
a love for all cats. Now Rick and Lisa have 10 cats, an RV named “Road Cat,” purchased
just so their cats could travel with them, and a boat named “Sea Cat”. Lisa, who is
allergic to cats, but loves them anyway, joined Rick in his effort to save the lives of
shelter cats in Buffalo, New York, in 2009. Their philanthropic and volunteer efforts
were so successful that the Erie County SPCA has not had to euthanize a healthy cat
in the last 5 or 6 years and is now in the process of constructing a new building to be
named the Rick and Lisa Lewis Adoption Center.
In 2013 Rick and Lisa decided to buy a part-time home in the Melbourne area.
During their first week in Florida they saw a TV ad by the Brevard SPCA advertising
our Mega Adopt Event which included a disturbing story about the Brevard County
shelters euthanizing 3900 healthy cats during the preceding year. They immediately
decided that something had to be done to stop this tragic loss of lives, and they knew
just what to do about it. The Erie County SPCA had wanted to open a mall location in
order to bring the cats to the people (not the other way around), but had no funds
to do this. With Rick and Lisa’s financial
and moral support, two Buffalo area mall
locations were opened with great success.
Now the Erie County SPCA even has to
import cats to keep the mall locations full.
With this history of success in mind, Rick
contacted Pat Fox, the Executive Director of
the Brevard SPCA, and offered the financial
backing and expertise to open a cat
adoption center in the Melbourne Square
Mall. This turned out to be such an overwhelming success that the SPCA shortly
opened a second location in the Merritt
Square Mall. These two local mall locations have adopted out over 2200 cats between
them since they opened, including many imported from the over-crowded county
shelters and other rescue groups.
The SPCA of Brevard, and the thousands of cats whose lives have been saved, are
very grateful for all the time, effort, expertise, and financial assistance that these
wonderful Movers and Shakers, Rick and Lisa Lewis, have so generously donated.
Thank you, Rick and Lisa! x
Did you know that IRA charitable rollover is now
a permanent extension of the Protecting Americans
from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act? This was signed into law
in December of 2015. The IRA charitable rollover
may be used as a tax-free way to make gifts of up to
$100,000 per year to the SPCA of Brevard, or other
qualified charitable organization, while still meeting
your IRA required minimum distribution.
To qualify:
• No goods or services may be received in return
for your IRA rollover gift.
• You must be 70 ½ years of age or older.
• Transfers of any amount up to $100,000 per
year directly from your IRA to the SPCA or other
qualified charitable organization are allowed.
As with any financial planning situation, please
talk with your financial adviser to determine if an IRA
charitable rollover is right for you.
