what legends are made of
Although ‘La Bermuda’ appeared on a map of the world as early as
1511, it was known to early explorers as ‘The Isle of Devils’. Many a
Spanish galleon plying the routes from Cartagena to Cadiz foundered
upon the reefs surrounding Bermuda. Survivors brought home tales
of terror, shrieking phantasms and mysterious storms.
Bermuda was eventually settled by a fortuitous accident. The Sea
Venture, bound for the struggling colony Jamestown, Virginia, under
the command of Admiral Sir George Somers, wrecked here in 1609 in
“a dreadful storme…an Hell of Darkness”, wrote a member of the Sea
Venture in his diary. The shipwrecked adventurers found Bermuda
anything but forbidding. Eventually, most of them pressed on to
Virginia, but for Bermuda it was the beginning of settlement.
Bermuda is a sub-tropical archipelago warmed by the Gulf Stream.
Legend has it that there are 365 islands, one for each day of the year,
but in truth it is comprised of 181 named islands, islets and rocks. It has
been a destination for the pleasure bound ever since Princess Louise
set foot here over a century ago. Bermuda lies just 650 miles off the
coast of North Carolina and is easily reached in two hours from the
East Coast cities of New York, Boston, Washington D.C. and Charlotte,
NC. It is two and a half hours from Atlanta and Toronto and seven
hours from London, England.
American humorist Mark Twain, a frequent
visitor to Bermuda, may have been
correct when he
claimed that it was
the “right country for a
jaded man to loaf in”. It
would take great deter–
mination, however, to
resist all there is to do
in Bermuda.

Bermuda ranks
as one of the more remote islands in
the world, it is either second or third in the list—a point for
discussion with those ‘Tommy-know-it-alls’ who enjoy a good
debate. Certainly, it is one of the most beautiful places in the
world; those from all walks of life have confirmed this point
since the late 18th century, when Bermuda began attracting
visitors to our far-flung shores.
The Island is located in the Atlantic Ocean on the same latitude as Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, just 650 miles off the
Eastern seaboard. Warmed by the waters of the Gulf Stream,
Bermuda is a sub-tropical island with lush vegetation; the seasonal rainfall and a stable water table provide sufficient water
to support a relatively dense growth accented by splashes of
glorious colour.
In the beginning, Bermuda was a farming and fishing community, well known for its exports of the Easter Lily and the Bermuda
onion. This lucrative trade came to an end in the 1930’s. However, Bermudians are enterprising and resilient; everything we
build, make or create performs a double duty; even our outgoing nature is a direct spin-off from our isolation.
We enjoy a good time and some say we are born entertainers:
we love an audience. Street festivals are a weekly event in the
summer; the friendly atmosphere is truly contagious. The venues hosting these events are significant areas that you will likely become familiar with during your daytime sightseeing and
shopping activities as they are transformed to the lively street
festivals in the evening and include the Royal Naval Dockyard
in the west end of the Island, the Town of St. George in the
east end and the City of Hamilton, our capital city. Get into the
rhythm and beat of Calypso, Reggae, Jazz and African dance
groups while you take in the music, art, food and fun. Review
the schedule for these street festivals in the Bermuda Department of Tourism’s brochure available island-wide or check your
concierge or the Visitor Information Centres for details.
During the festive holiday season, visitors will be spoiled for
choices, a slate of sporting events fill the days and cultural
events dominate in the evenings. Talent is never in short supply—we may be small, but we are good. Dates for voice and
music recitals are dotted throughout the holiday calendar. And,
the new wave of youthful playwrights and actors inject a fresh
‘buzz’ and energy into this vibrant cultural scene.

& Entertainment
For some people, one of the best things Bermuda has
to offer is the opportunity to do nothing. Breakfast, a morning
exploring the Town of St. George, a languid lunch, an afternoon at the beach and then a beautiful dinner overlooking the
ocean. A stroll to wind down the day—what could be a greater
contrast to the stress-driven life? Others, however, are not happy unless they’re in motion more or less all the live-long day.
For them, Bermuda is a great place too.
Here are the highlights of our busy, busy year: in January and
February, the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts brings
some of the world’s greatest actors, musicians and entertainers to the Island. The Bermuda Regional Bridge Tournament
and the Bermuda Marathon Weekend keep the Island buzzing.
In March, we host the Bermuda International Film Festival and
a visit from the Harvard Hasty Pudding Theatricals troupe.
In April, don’t miss our Easter kite-flying and the three-day
Agricultural Exhibition.
May is Heritage Month. We have a one-day Open House and
Garden Party, an End-to-End Walk, a Bermuda Day Parade
and endless festivities.
June sees the Queen’s Birthday Parade and the Native Bermuda
Festival. July is famous worldwide for Cup Match, the two-day
cricket match and endless party that defines our island home
(some years held early August).
In August, as you’d expect, we’re on the water. The Non-Mariners’
Race is a fun event, as are the more upright Bermuda fitted
dinghy races ending the month with a sand sculpting comp–
etition. The fun and excitement continues in September with
numerous golf tournaments.
October brings the PGA Grand Slam of Golf and the Argo
Group Gold Cup Yacht Match Racing. In November, we host the
World Rugby Classic, the SheRox Triathlon and the Goslings
Invitational. The Bermuda Goodwill Golf Tournament kicks off
December. Christmas in Bermuda is a magical time with all
sorts of seasonal events including a boat parade and sensational New Year’s Eve activities in both the Town of St. George
and City of Hamilton.
So much to do, so little time!

Golf Courses
Bermuda has seven
major high-quality golf courses:
Port Royal, Turtle Hill, Riddell’s Bay, Belmont Hills, Ocean View,
Mid Ocean Club and Tucker’s Point; plus a Golf Academy Driving
Range. We’re serious about golf, a fact acknowledged by the Professional Golfers’ Association of America in 2007, when it awarded
Bermuda, for the first time, the right to hold the prestigious
PGA Grand Slam of Golf.
The Grand Slam is the exciting finale to the golfing season, a
showcase tournament in which the four major champions of
the golfing year—the winners of the Masters, U.S. Open, Open
Championship (British Open) and the PGA Championship—
take part in the game’s premier foursome. A huge television
audience in more than 100 countries follows along.
In 2007, the Grand Slam’s 25th anniversary tournament, and
the 26th, a year later, were held at the Island’s Mid Ocean Club,
a renowned course located in the eastern end of the Island.
Since 2009, the PGA Grand Slam of Golf has been held at our
renovated Port Royal Golf Course, located in the western end.
The championship Port Royal course has been ranked by Golf
Digest as one of the world’s best public courses. It is highlighted by breathtaking ocean views and a stunning par-3 on the
16th hole. The course is open to the elements, which makes for
exhilarating play.
The course architect, Robert Trent Jones, Sr., deemed Port
Royal Golf Course his finest work outside of the United States.
The public course opened for play in 1970, but has undergone
a multi-million dollar renovation, enhancing some of the most
picturesque and dramatic holes in golf.
The redevelopment of the Port Royal course has included
re-routing two holes, the construction of new bunkers, the
installation of a reverse osmosis plant, a computerised irrigation system and the planting of Tif Eagle on redesigned

greens. Casuarina trees have been replaced by indigenous

Holes placed perilously close to the ocean heighten the

for all levels of golfers. At the Club you will find a pro shop

Bermuda is the ultimate Spa. Sheltered by the embrace of the Atlantic Ocean, caressed by the westerly breezes,
refreshed continuously by the ever-changing tides, this tiny
,
treasure offers all the elements needed to restore mind, body

and soul…plus a heady cocktail of sensory delights, a mingling
of tropical scents—floral, spice and tropical fruits.

Old-time Bermudians relied on the curative powers found in
so u tha m p to n
days; a soothing balm made from aloe was the antidote for all
local fruit, herbs and vegetables. A few blades of Lemon Grass
were the basis for a cooling tea so necessary in the hot summer
manner of skin problems; and mothers knew that a ripe banana
would provide quick relief for a child’s upset tummy. A look at
the composition of many products used in spas today proves
that the benefits of these old fashioned cure-alls are timeless.
The ‘spa culture’ has taken hold here and those seeking their
way back to whole health have their choice among the Island’s
noteworthy spas.

impressive list of Bermuda spas are outstanding: Samadhi, at
the new Newstead Belmont Hills Golf Resort and the Spa at the
Rosewood Tucker’s Point Hotel are world-class facilities offering services and treatments second to none.
The established retreats provide their faithful clientele with services and amenities that draw them back again and again. Cambridge Beaches, Elbow Beach Spa, Willow Stream Spa at the

been destination spas for visitors and locals.
Dotted around the Island are a number of smaller spa retreats,
and each has its own special attributes: extended hours, convenient location and that trusted personality—the guru of beauty and wellness. And, for those who prefer the pleasure of a

Transportation
Mini-buses go where the passengers want them to.
Our three ferry routes provide an enchanting way of seeing
Bermuda before deciding which parts of the Island to explore.
Ferries that wend their way around the Island cruise to and from
the Ferry Terminal in the heart of the City of Hamilton. You’ll
need a ticket, a token or a Transportation Pass, since cash is not
accepted.
Four- or six-seater taxis can be hired all over the Island, 24 hours
a day. They’re easiest to find outside the larger hotels or elsewhere in the City of Hamilton, the Town of St. George or the
Royal Naval Dockyard. All our taxis are metered by law. They
can be hired for a specific journey or as tour vehicles. Our taxi
drivers are one of Bermuda’s most precious assets. They know
everything about the Island, old and new. They’ll knowledgeably
answer any question you ask them, on any subject.
Drive-yourself rental cars are not available. Visitors over the age
of 18 may rent motor-scooters (mopeds). A driver’s licence is
not required. Cycle liveries abound, offering single-seat or two-
Getting around Bermuda
is easy and fun, with a
range of choices available. Buses, mini-buses, ferries and taxis
are in service year-round and cover the Island. Visitors can rent
motor-scooters or bicycles (which some of us still call pedal
bikes or pushbikes) and even a horse and carriage, if the mood
so takes them. Maps and timetables of the bus and ferry routes
are widely available; don’t go out without one!
Walking is the best way to gain a real sense of what Bermuda
and its people are like. You can go at your own pace and stop
wherever you please, discovering the Island as you go.
Our pink buses are plentiful and frequent; they cover the Island.
Bus stops and shelters are marked at the side of the road by pink
poles (for journeys into the City of Hamilton) or blue poles (for
outward journeys). Buses operate on 11 routes, through 14 zones.
seater vehicles. The daily rental fee includes insurance, a helmet
(which all riders must wear, securely fastened), a lock, a full tank
of gas and even a map of the Island.
Details on all these modes of transportation are available at your
guest house or hotel, or at the Visitor Information Centres located in the City of Hamilton, Town of St. George and the Royal
Naval Dockyard.
We drive on the left and we drive slowly. There’s a 20 mph (35
kph) speed limit everywhere, less in the city and towns.
A tip, if you’re driving a rental cycle: don’t look back. Our drivers are used to motor-scooters and can tell from the red licence
plate when a visitor is driving. They’ll take extra care. At roundabouts (which you might call traffic circles), priority is given to the
person on your right.
You can pay as you board, in which case the exact cash fare is
required. Tickets and tokens are available, as are Transportation
Passes which offer reduced fares and can be bought for one,
two, three, four or seven consecutive days of unlimited travel on
all buses and ferries.

Fishing, Diving & Yachting
On our Island
you are never more than a deep breath
away from our beloved ocean. During season after season of
amazing fishing to thrilling aquatic adventures such as parasailing, diving and waterskiing, we are very adept at making the
most of our brilliant blue waters.
fishing
It’s probably no coincidence that Bermuda is shaped like a
fish-hook. The waters around the Island offer some of the best
fishing in the world. There’s nothing more relaxing than a day’s
fishing on the Island’s shoreline or dock fishing. We also offer
outstanding reef and bonefishing; the latter is a summer pastime. Equipment is easily arranged through the community of
charter fisherman on the Island. Whether you’re a casual angler
or more serious about the business of fishing, bring your own
equipment or rent whatever you need on the Island.
Farther out on the ocean, there is little more exciting than
game fishing. Hundreds of varieties of fish swim in the waters
around the Island. Many of the world record catches certified
by the International Game Fishing Association were taken off

our shores.
If you have bigger fish in mind, the reefs around Bermuda and
the deeper waters outside are a fisherman’s dream come true.
Our fleet of licensed captains with their purpose-built charter
fishing boats will ensure a great day out on the water. Their vessels are equipped with fighting chairs and outriggers, and can
accommodate as many as eight people.
The charters will supply everything you need for the day.
Arrangements should be made in advance with the captains
and it’s a good idea to book well ahead, since the charter boats
are in big demand.
Bermuda hosts a number of fishing tournaments during the
year. In June, the Bermuda Billfish Release gives everyone a
chance to take part in an informal and fun event. July sees the

Spend a day at the beach and you’ll be joining the locals in
one of their most loved activities. Traditionally, they start their
swimming season on the May 24 public holiday. But during
the cooler months of November through April the water is

Safety Tips
Some of the South Shore beaches are occasionally subject to
rip tides. Should you be caught in one, do not try to cross it.
Instead, let the current carry you and swim parallel to the shore
so that you can catch the waves that will take you back to the
shore. Watch out for beach flags. A white one means a lifeguard
is on duty. A red one means the currents are too dangerous for
safe swimming. A yellow one warns of the need for caution in
heavy surf.
Do not swim alone, especially on the South Shore beaches.
Etiquette No nude swimming or sunbathing is allowed on any of
Bermuda’s public beaches. For an up-to-date listing of our pink sand

shopping
Around
Full of surprises—that’s
a shopping excursion in
Bermuda. It can take you all over the Island: City of Hamilton,
St George’s, Royal Naval Dockyard and plenty of stops off the
beaten track in between! It’s a great way to discover Bermuda
and how it inspires the creativity of its people.
Hamilton offers visitors a new and different shopping
experience. The retail scene was once one of big shops; today
the image is one of a vibrant variety. The shops are smaller, the
boutiques are interesting and there are hidden corner stores
which never fail to have just the right quirky fashion to appeal
to the savvy dresser.
Front Street is the ‘high’ street of Hamilton and the colourful
shop fronts make a bright promenade where discerning
shoppers can browse through stores with carefully chosen
merchandise imported from Europe’s leading manufacturers:
fine china and crystal, quality linens, elegant timepieces and
jewellery are still the top sellers. Three long-standing liquor
merchants offer great prices on wines and spirits—especially
Bermuda rum! Collectors of African art should head for the
Crisson Hind Gallery, where the work is sure to impress.
Take a detour from Front Street into the bustle of Reid and
Queen Streets and the scene changes. These two streets boast
both classy and funky boutiques, not to mention an everythingunder-one-roof department store with a very impressive range
of fragrances. Delve into Washington Mall off Reid Street and its
sister mall, Washington Mall 3, opened with the main access off
Church Street for everything from the essential and practical to
the fun and frivolous. While you are in the area follow any of the
well-turned out locals to one of city’s notable and numerous
beauty salons.
North Hamilton is regaining its distinction for its ethnic eateries

Perfect Weddings
Imagine saying ‘I do’
on a cliff overlooking the ocean
with the sound of the surf caressing the shore. Or, how about
exchanging your vows on a stretch of pink sand as the sunlight
glints off the water behind you? Bermuda is consistently voted
among the world’s leading wedding destinations and it’s easy
to see why. Each year hundreds of brides and grooms are attracted by the Island’s beautiful beaches, exotic gardens and
historic buildings. More than half of the weddings that take
place each year involve couples from overseas who want to tie
the knot in this island paradise.
One of the best things about getting married in Bermuda is
that it’s relatively easy for visitors. The rules governing marriage in Bermuda are straightforward and there is no residency
requirement. In order to obtain a marriage licence, a couple
must file a Notice of Intended Marriage form, along with the
required fee, with the Registrar General. The Registrar’s office
then arranges for the notice to be published in two local newspapers. If there is no objection, the Registrar will issue the marriage licence, which is valid for three months, on the 15th day
after application. Once you have obtained your licence, the fun
really begins as preparations get underway for your big day.

Civil wedding ceremonies are held in the Marriage Room of the
Registry—an intimate room where an ocean view mural and
vases of tropical flowers create the impression of being outdoors. For those who prefer to take advantage of Bermuda’s
glorious climate, the Island’s laws also allow weddings in public
places. These include beaches, parks, the grounds of an historic house or one of Bermuda’s many hotels.
Bermuda boasts more churches per square mile than any
other country so there are plenty of religious venues to choose
from, some of which are hundreds of years old. The clergy of

Azure waters,
pink sand shores and that special local
charm—it’s understandable why generations and generations
of newlyweds have flocked to Bermuda. Whether it’s traditional ‘Honeymooners’ or the growing trend of ‘Mini-Mooners’,
‘The Jewel of the Atlantic’ offers a unique experience for those
wanting the ultimate romantic getaway.
With Bermuda’s proximity to North America, couples can enjoy
the sun, surf and sand over a long weekend or extend their stay
to experience all the Island has to offer. Bermuda is located in
the North Atlantic, 650 miles east of North Carolina and is less
than two hours by air from most US eastern cities.
Bermudians are known for their warm and friendly personalities greeting friends and strangers alike with a ‘Good morning’
or ‘Good afternoon’. They are more than happy to personalize
the numerous island activities for newlyweds in order to create
an amorous adventure that couples will want to revisit every
anniversary. Private guided tours are offered either by taxi or
on foot. Drive down windy roads lined with pastel houses or
stroll the railroad trails to see the Island’s lush flora, including
the flowering hibiscus and Bermuda Cedar. Sunset or sunrise
walks around Spitall Pond Nature Reserve can also be arranged
—include a picnic to fully take in the beauty of the area.
Bermuda is rich in culture, breathtaking views and a deep rooted history with strong ties to Britain and the US. Couples can
walk arm in arm down the cobblestone streets of the Town of
St. George, which some historians determine to be the oldest
continually inhabited English Town in the New World. History
buffs can tour the UNESCO World Heritage Site before venturing to Martello Tower and Tom Moore’s Jungle. Historic forts
and homes are sprinkled around the Island and give visitors an
insight of old Bermuda. After learning about Bermuda’s nautical past at the National Museum of Bermuda located in the
Royal Naval Dockyard, couples can share a playful swim with
the dolphins at Dolphin Quest.
Dolphins aren’t the only animals couples can interact with. Prior
to the advent of the motor car, horses were the main means of
transport around the Island. Today couples can enjoy a romantic horse and carriage ride through the streets of downtown
Hamilton and surrounding area while sipping a glass of bubbly.
