DANCE TEAM NEWS
Competition season has officially started. January and February are particularly busy months, but the more input
we receive from the judges, the more we’ll grow. Each and every dancer is a part of the intense process we go
through on our way to Yakima, and they can all be proud!
Districts planning is of utmost importance right now. If I haven’t already been in touch with you, and you’re
interested in helping us plan this event, please let me know immediately. We’ll need everyone’s help and more
at the actual event on March 6. Although it requires lots of work, it is always exciting to host Districts!
Parents, thank you for all of your continued support to the dance program. Your willingness to drive girls to and
from practices and performances, your understanding the periodic necessity for an extra or extended practice,
your encouragement, and your willingness to serve on committees and attend Booster meetings all contribute to
the girls’ success. I could never do this job without you!

KAMIAK CHOIRS
Ms. Duck to Visit New York City Venues
Ms. Duck will go to New York City the weekend of January 16th to make certain all venues (events,
hotels, restaurants, etc.) meet with her department's expectations. After her voyage, a notification of her
findings will be sent to everyone.
SKMEA Solo and Ensemble Festival
The kids are all working hard to practice their music for the upcoming Solo and Ensemble competitions on
February 6th. You may have noticed their absence just a little more lately!
Final Trip Payment
The final trip payment is due February 15, 2010. All accounts must be paid in full by that date so we can
pay the travel agent. If we do not receive the final payment, we must drop your student's reservation.
Slow and steady wins the race…
We are all familiar with the fable about the tortoise and the hare and this great lesson is also relevant with Kamiak
Performing Arts Boosters.
During this prolonged economic recession, we understand that some families have a difficult time meeting the financial
commitments from your children’s participation in the extra activities offered by KPAB.
If you cannot pay your child’s entire balance, please consider paying what you can each month. Even $25 per month
($300 for the year) will make a very significant dent in most of the activities. KPAB will accept any installment amount,
and eventually the race will be won!
We also accept your bank card (credit and debit) for payment. Please include:

Wow! The holiday season is barely over, but hold onto your hats: our busiest performance time of year is around
the corner! In “quick and dirty” bullet-point style, here are the important events and reminders for all orchestra
parents including Strings, Symphony Winds, and Percussion:
February 6 Solo/Ensemble All Day at the “new” Lynnwood High School. All are welcome to listen to ensembles
and solos throughout the day – Kamiak and other Sno-King Regions!
February 6 Vienna Ball! This is not only a fun night; it is another fantastic fund raiser! We still need help,
especially with decorations the afternoon of the event. Please contact Deb Varner
([email protected]) if you can help in any way.
February 8 Gresham Financial Commitment Form is due. All forms – Financial Commitment, Permission Slips,
and Medical Authorization -- can be found on the KPAB web page – kamiakarts.org. Dates and
other reminders are also on the web page. Check it out!
February 12-14 All-State Weekend – and special congratulations to all those orchestra members who will
represent Kamiak at this honor event!
February 27 Gresham Orchestra Camp! This is a very special day of clinics with coaches and a guest conductor.
Maestro Huy Edwards of the Olympia Symphony. Symphony I meets 8 AM – 12:00 and Symphony
II from 10:00 – 2 PM. The Gresham Fee of $110 is also due this day as is all other paperwork. We
will need a few parent volunteers to help with refreshments and light duties thought the day.
Please contact Melanie Field. ([email protected])
Then the BIG WEEK!
March 10 District Festivals, 7:00 PM KHS Gym
March 11 SKMEA Festival, All Day, Shoreline Center for all Symphony and Intermediate Orchestra members!
Permission slips due February 27.
March 12-13 GRESHAM! We will leave around noon, stop at the Lloyd Center Mall, stay at the Comfort Suites in
Gresham, OR, and the next day compete with our two symphonies, Kammerstreich and two
quartets, all at Mt. hood Community College. It is a bit of a drive but parents are welcome to come
and listen to the performances! Interested in chaperoning? Let Melanie Field know (Always a good
thing on your resume for chaperoning the “big trip in 2011!)
March 25 Orchestra Concert, 7 PM in the PAC
PHEW!
A few other notes--
All KPAB fees must be paid in order to attend KPAB trips such as the Performance Tour to Gresham. We do have
scholarship funds available, due February 22. Please contact Mr. Steves or Melanie Field if you cannot make
the Gresham Fee at this time or if you need to work on some past debt. We truly want ALL STUDENTS to
participate and have scholarship funds available!
ASB FEES: Other fees due would be your half of the All-State Fee ($155), the All State Transportation Fee ($25), and
your solo ($15) or Duet ($10) fee. Please remit payments to the KHS Bookkeeper (NOT KPAB).
With the current financial budget crunch, orchestra ASB funds were reduced this year. Therefore, we regretfully
must request a $7 tuxedo-cleaning fee for all PS I & II men, and we are asking Kammerstreich members to pay
$40 towards the cost for the clinics and contest fees. These charges are included with KPAB debt, and we will
submit the funds to KHS ASB.
Congratulations to junior Christopher Chalaka, who was named the winner of Snohomish County Music Teachers'
Association Piano Concerto competition. He is to perform the Grieg Piano Concerto with the Everett
Symphony, an outstanding honor!
And finally, a special thanks to all the choir, orchestra, and band parents who helped make our 13th Annual
Messiah Performance a musical and financial success! We grossed over $14,000, but more importantly, the kids
had a great musical experience and we shared our Kamiak music with over 1,000 members of the community.
Many folks spent hours helping, but special recognition goes to our co-chairs, Kellie Coffey and Melanie Field!
They worked tirelessly for this event, and yet left with smiles on their faces! They were a joy to work with – a
sincere thanks!

What’s “Swinging” at KHS
This year’s Jazz program is off to a great start. We’ve had musicians doing extra duty with accompanist duty for the
choir and two special Martin Luther King Day assembly performances. All of our musicians are fresh from the John
Moawad Jazz Festival and looking forward to the winter concert. We are VERY excited about our spring events. We
have confirmed that Bobby Shew, the Grammy award winning Trumpet player, will be coming to Kamiak High
School for our second annual Kamiak Invitational Jazz Festival on March 20th. All the Mukilteo School District Jazz
Ensembles have been invited to attend a day of performances and clinics followed by an evening concert featuring
the Bellevue College Jazz Band with Bobby Shew. We hope to fill the PAC in support of our Jazz Ensembles.
Upcoming happenings;
Winter concert in the PAC February 10th. Bring a non-perishable food item for the Mukilteo Food Bank.
February 27th. Trip to Dimitrou’s Jazz Alley to see the San Francisco Jazz Collective.
Second annual Jazz Invitational at KHS on March 20, 2010. Still looking for volunteers. Contact your Jazz
Liaison, Karen Creech, at [email protected] for more info.
Major Retailers Want To Give Our School Money!
We’re pleased to share some exciting news about a new fundraising program for our organization. It’s called
“scrip”, and it’s the fundraising program that works while you shop.
Scrip is simply a word that means “substitute money” – in other words, scrip is gift certificates from national
and local retailers. They’re the same gift certificates that you buy at the store. Many popular retailers
participate in our scrip program including Macy’s, The Gap, Shell, Pizza Hut, Albertsons, Starbucks, and many,
many others.
You’re probably asking yourself how these stores help us raise money. It’s simple -- scrip participating retailers
agree to sell gift certificates to our organization at a discount. Member families like yours buy the certificates
for full face value, they redeem them for full face value, and our school keeps the difference as revenue. And
scrip is exciting, because everybody wins:
The retailer gets cash up front and repeat business…
You get a powerful fundraising alternative that involves no selling…
Our school gets a regular source of revenue.
The beauty of scrip is that you put your regular household shopping dollars to work. You earn money for our
school without spending a single additional penny. Just spend your regular shopping dollars with scrip at the
stores that participate in the scrip program! And scrip can be used for just about any household purchase
including food, clothing, entertainment, gasoline and even dining out.
The Kamiak Performing Arts scrip program promises to be a simple and effective fundraising program. The
sooner you get registered, the sooner you can get started making a difference for Kamiak Arts! Get your
enrollment forms online at www.KamiakArts.org or email us!
Thanks for your support!
