Fiscal Year 2012 - Capitol View Arts

Dear Friends,
As we reflect on 2012, the first full year of operations for Capitol View Arts, the Board is truly moved by the
generosity of our supporters and the dedication of our volunteers. Capitol View Arts programming would not
be possible without the support of our community.
We especially thank the City of Austin Music Division, the City of Austin Cultural Arts Division, H-E-B, and the
Victory Grill for believing in our mission and services.
Capitol View Arts was formed as an organization that would be inclusive to all, with a particular focus
toward minority artists. During the past months while setting a foundation for the future, we have met with
and listened to countless individual artists and nonprofit organizations to determine what their needs are
and how we could best assist with collaboration and outreach. What we have found is that not only could
individual artists benefit from our services, but our community as a whole could be made more aware of
issues facing minority, underserved, and east side residents. Results of our efforts contributed to social
equality and cultural awareness.
Capitol View Arts expends a large portion of its funding in direct economic benefit to the artistic
community. We firmly believe that artists should be compensated for their contribution. We are proud of
the fact that over two-thirds of our cash budget went straight back into the hands of artists and arts related
businesses for performances rendered and individual professional enhancements. We were fortunate to be
able to pay wages for over 30 performances and contribute directly to artist careers by providing
educational scholarships, conference credentials, transportation, accommodations, studio time, video
shoots, and more which had a direct impact on individual economic prosperity. Our programs allowed
artists who would not have been able to obtain training, produce professional recordings, or utilize
performance opportunities due to financial hardship, the advantage to do so.
As we move into 2013, we look forward to serving this City’s great talent. We are more committed than
ever to creating programs that increase artist value and provide economic benefit.

About Capitol View Arts
With a particular focus on the African-American and minority cultural heritage in east Austin, Capitol View
Arts supports the arts community through education, mentoring, collaborative opportunities, and the
preservation of venues for performances and public use.
Capitol View Arts is committed to:

and cultural awareness.
 Offering support for art entrepreneurs in their economic and creative pursuits.
 Promoting community participation and awareness in regard to the arts.
Capitol View Arts Programs
Capitol View Arts offers educational, mentoring, and networking programming for artists that provide
valuable skills and connections to manage and monetize their careers. Program content is business,
management, and technical based instruction to further assist artists in their career pursuits. Programs are
marketed to all central Texas, with special emphasis placed on east Austin residents and minorities.
The Urban Austin program provides select artists the opportunity to work together to create opportunity and
represent Capitol View Arts at the Cutting Edge Music Conference and at other special events throughout the
year. Participants are selected by an application process.
Black History Month comprehensive programming offers the community the chance to learn more about
African-American artists, social justice issues, and current events concerning the African-American and east
Austin communities.
East Austin has a rich cultural history embedded in art. Capitol View Arts offers enhanced opportunities for
artist performance on the east side of IH35 and encourages residents in the area to become involved in their
arts community. Initiatives are concentrated on the preservation and revitalization of the historical AfricanAmerican culture located in east Austin, and in particular at the historic Victory Grill. Capitol View Arts
invites all central Texas residents and visitors to experience Austin’s east side culture and its contribution
to our local arts.
During 2012, Capitol View Arts offered 8 educational based events and 31 performances. Total program
attendance was 2588, with 491 participants receiving career training or mentoring. Approximately 2/3
served were African-American, while the other 1/3 consisted of predominately Hispanic, multi-racial, and
White demographics. The Capitol View Arts Board consists of African-American, Hispanic, White, and male
and female demographics.
2012 Program Highlights
Black History Month 2012
Capitol View Arts (CVA) offered programming during February to highlight and celebrate African-American
culture. Nine distinct programs offered something for everyone. Performances by Another Run, Anya, Bluu
Suede, Down Home Gospel Music featuring Chris Spivey and Nu Destiny, Drastik, East Side Blues Syndicate,
Fulfill, LZ Love, ParkNMurray, Part 2, Sharecess Carter, Strawberry Jam, and The Peterson Brothers were
produced for the public free or for a suggested $5 donation.
Educational programming included a radio mixer with the DJs and staff of KAZI and a seminar with Geno
Young, artistic director for Erykah Badu. In addition, CVA screened the film Red Tails for free for east side
residents at the Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex.
Also in February, CVA awarded scholarships to five African-American arts community leaders to attend an
advocacy workshop presented by Texans for the Arts at The Long Center. The workshop covered current
issues in arts funding and how to best advocate for arts related issues.
The Growing the Tradition event ended Black History Month at the
Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex and honored community
members that mentor and further careers of local hip hop artists. 2012
honorees are Albert “Madd Creole” Redeaux, B.L.U.E. the Rapper,
Kasino, Checkmate, and NOOK.
During the week of SXSW, CVA hosted a party at the Victory Grill with
the Cutting Edge Music Conference.
In April, Berklee songwriting professor, Pat Pattison offered a free
songwriting clinic followed by an open mic session at the Victory Grill.
Two CVA board members received scholarships and attended the
national Americans for the Arts Annual Convention in San Antonio in
June.
The selection of artists for the Urban Austin program occurred in July. Artists are selected to travel to New
Orleans for the Cutting Edge Music Conference as well as take advantage of special opportunities and
performances that continue into 2013. Artists participating in the 2012 program are Drastik, Myz B, Eson,
Doc Deuce, Erin Ivey, Serafia Jane, and JRedd. Urban Austin Musical Director Kris Keyz put together a
phenomenal backing band consisting of Tom Palmer, JD Smith,
Hammer Epkins, and Darius Jackson. The band now backs five of
the Urban Austin artists on a regular basis. Musicians also received
studio time at The Recording Conservatory of Austin, private
production sessions with Kris Keyz, drop cards featuring tracks from
each artist, video footage, and special career targeted meetings
and introductions.
In August, attorney Amy Mitchell conducted a presentation at
KAZI’s Summerfest covering copyright protection for musicians and
songwriters. She also answered general legal questions from
participants.
On September 1, a free to the public performance and sneak peak
of the combined artists’ sets for the Cutting Edge Music Conference
was presented at the Victory Grill.
During September in preparation for the Cutting Edge Music
Conference, SXSW staff member Amin Simms mentored artists in
the Urban Austin program and gave a presentation to special invited
guests about how to make the most of the music festival
experience.
Twenty-three musicians and music business professionals attended workshops, networked with industry
players, and performed in numerous venues in New Orleans for the Cutting Edge Music Conference from
September 25-30.
In October, CVA sponsored an Urban Austin performance at the east Austin charter school for at risk and
disadvantaged youth, Austin Can Academy.
In November, the Victory Grill was transformed into an art gallery with the artwork of AJ Simon, Bianca
Neal, and Baron Wilson. As an official stop on the East Austin Studio Tour, CVA at the Victory Grill
hosted the visual art community and fans as well as produced an official afterparty with Tje Austin, Serafia
Jane, and Myrna and the Bulldog.
Urban Austin artists with special guests Austin Alvarez and SaulPaul participated in the 1st Austin FanFest
event during the inaugural F1 Austin race in November by performing at the downtown Cultural Arts Austin
Creates stage.
CVA in partnership with Kris Keyz Productions hosted a special Christmas event with Tje Austin, Tameka
Jones, Omar Phoenix, and Serafia Jane.
