Torn between the past and present CANTINA explores the rapture and torture of desire,
the tension between harsh reality and escapist fantasy. Set to a live soundscape created by bizarre
and antiquated instruents: a gramophone, a pianola, an air-organ, jewellery boxes; revisited and revamped.
As this vaudeville of by-gone music, magic and remarkable displays of acrobatics and dance unfolds,
the line between passion and violence is never quite clear.

CANTINA is a physical theatre production created by STRUT & FRET PRODUCTION HOUSE and was first
presented at Brisbane Festival 2010, Australia.
Since its inception, critically acclaimed and award winning CANTINA has enjoyed sold out seasons across
Australia and internationally; including Noorderzon Festival (Netherlands), Dommelhof Circus Festival
(Belgium), Tollwood Winter Festival (Munich, Germany), New Zealand Arts Festival and Imberoamericano
Arts Festival (Bogota, Columbia) and a 5 month season in London’s Southbank (United Kingdom).
CANTINA is an ensemble piece created by and starring seven elite performers, internationally renowned
for their unique circus and physical theatre skills. The show was made specifically to be performed in
one of the exquisite travelling Belgian 1920’s Spiegeltents.
In 2012, CANTINA will tour extensively to New Zealand, South America and throughout Europe, making it
one of Australia’s most in demand live cultural touring exports.
CANTINA was one of sixteen shows selected to participate in the Australian Performing Arts Market
(APAM) Showcase in Adelaide in February 2012.

CREATORS & CAST BIOS
SCOTT MAIDMENT
CO-DIRECTOR & PRODUCER
Creative Director of Strut & Fret Production House, Scott has
worked in the performing arts and events management
industry for over 20 years and is one of Australia’s leading
directors of live shows, events and festivals.
In addition to Cantina, Scott directed the award winning The
Secret Death of Salvador Dali and recent directorial credits
include The Dream Menagerie, Tom Tom Crew, A Company of
Strangers and Feasting on Flesh.
Scott has created and produced major events for several
festivals across Australia, such as the Sydney Festival,
Brisbane Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival and Melbourne
International Comedy Festival, as well as for the Edinburgh
Festival Fringe and the Dublin Fringe Festival. He has delivered
major events for many government partners in Melbourne,
Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide and for the
Commonwealth Games held in 2006 in Melbourne, Australia.

CHELSEA McGUFFIN
CO-DIRECTOR & PERFORMER
Chelsea trained in dance at the Adelaide Centre for
Performing Arts before moving into circus. Working with many
internationally renowned companies including CIRCA,
Queensland Theatre Company and Circus Monoxide, Chelsea
has since travelled the world performing across the UK,
Europe, Canada, South America and Asia.
Having created and performed in several notable productions
such as Smoke and Mirrors, Fake
It and Regarding the Joy of Others, and a solo trapeze
performance at the Brisbane Gasworks, Chelsea is also a
performer, director and head trainer of Flipside Circus and is
a co-founder of the production company Lady Torpedo.
NARA DEMASSON
MUSICAL DIRECTOR & PERFORMER
A musical extraordinaire from a fairground background, Nara
has worked for many years as a musician, performer and
musical director in theatre and circus.
Based in Melbourne for the last decade, Nara has played in
numerous bands, such as gypsy jazz outfit Blue Drag,
Hawaiian swing band, The Wikimen, French cabaret band, The
Night Sky and is the guitarist for the internationally renowned
Vulgargrad, a russian criminal gang.
As an instrument maker, Nara has built guitars, ukuleles and
various other instruments and has a fascination with sound
automation and sound effects. Many of the instruments that
make up the Cantina soundscape have been handcrafted by
Nara.
MOZES
CO-CREATOR & PERFORMER
Mozes began his circus training in 1996 at the Circus Space
in London. Upon his return to Australia, he continued with a
dedicated practice and soon found himself touring
internationally with Circus oz.
in 1999, Mozes joined the internationally acclaimed company,
Acrobat, and was a core member, performer and devisor until
December 2008, touring extensively in Asia, europe, UK and
South America.
Since 1999, Mozes has also performed with La Clique, Circus
Monoxide, Snuff Puppets, Circus oz, Blue Show and has spent
time as an aerial trainer with the Flying Fruit Fly Circus.
