LANGUAGE REMARK
In Serbia, two scripts are in use –
traditional and official Cyrillic, and
also the Latin consisting of 30 upper
and lowercase letters, some of which
are non-standard in the English
alphabet. They either contain a
diacritical mark like caron ( ˇ ) or
haček, acute accent ( ´ ), or a stroke
( – ), or are simply digraphs – a
pair of characters used to write one
phoneme or distinct sound. Following is the list with approximate
pronunciation:

The Unique Spirit
of Belgrade
The royal spirit of two Serbian
dynasties: the Obrenović Dynasty
in the Old Court Palace (which is
today the Belgrade Town Hall) and
the Karađorđević Dynasty in the
New Court Palace (which is today
the seat of the Serbian President),
and the White Court Palace – it
harbours the memories of the noble
life at the court in the end of the
19th and the beginning of the 20th
century.
The cosmopolitan spirit is in
walking down the Knez Mihailova
Street and meeting friends at Trg
Republike (Republic Square) where
the monument to Prince Mihailo
Obrenović, after whom the street
was named, is located. Adding to
the European spirit of this ambience are the splendid facades of the
National Museum and the National
Theatre.

Belgrade’s
www.serbia.travel
The ancient spirit of Belgrade – it
is Kalemegdan Fortress with its
romantic view of the confluence of
the Sava and Danube Rivers and its
renowned symbol of the City, the
monument to The Victor. It is also
Kosančićev Venac with its cobbled
streets and Princess Ljubica’s Residential Palace, where the centuries
meet in all their glory. And across
the river, it’s the city of Zemun with
its Gardoš Tower and narrow stone
streets which keep their secrets only
too well.
7
The cultural spirit of Belgrade is its
most precious asset – across 17 municipalities, Belgrade lives through
its streets and squares, in about 40
museums, 30 galleries, and 20 theatres, in almost 80 libraries and more
than 50 annual events! Every step
across Belgrade has a cultural echo.
The bohemian spirit lives in the inns
(kafanas) of Skadarlija, Belgrade’s
Montmartre, including Tri šešira,
Šešir moj and Ima dana. Here, everything has a hint of wine, old city
songs, and poetry.
The out & about spirit pulsates
in nearly 500 clubs, raft-style
restaurants and cafes, in the rhythms
of dance music – house, dance &
techno, pop & rock, salsa and tango.
The sports spirit is present in
bungee jumping, water skiing, and
golf at Ada Ciganlija, football and
Belgrade’s ‘Marakana’, jogging in the
parks, ice-skating in Pionir Sports
Hall, and the championships in
Belgrade Arena!
The business spirit in New Belgrade
hosts approximately 5000 companies, congress centres and first-class
hotels.

The Progressive
Spirit of Kragujevac
An industrial spirit and industrial
heritage are Kragujevac’s trademarks. The most famous is a car
produced in Zastava automobile
factory, the YUGO. Exactly
794,428 of these cars were sold and,
although it is no longer produced,
it can often be seen on the roads of
Serbia! The YUGO boasts an impressive film „career“ too: it appears
in almost 10 Hollywood box office
hits (Drowning Mona, Die Hard
3, Inspector Gadget, The Nutty
Professor...).

Niš
The Fairy’s
River City
- 240 km south-east from Belgrade
- One of the oldest towns in the Balkans
- The third largest town in Serbia
This city is a microcosm of the
Balkans. In Niš, the paths of history,
tradition, lifestyles and viewpoints
interweave, creating a magnificent
spirit of the City. The monuments,
museums and archaeological sites
(Mediana, Niš Fortress, Ćele kula
– Skull Tower...), along with the
promenade, the music and entertainment – add up to an absolutely
authentic experience!

As a city, Niš was founded by the
Celts in the 3rd century B.C. The
city got its name after the Nišava
river (Naissa) which the Celtic
precursors called “the Fairy’s River”
(Navissos). Throughout history
the name of Niš has been recorded
many times and each invader added
something of its own to the name:
Roman Naissus, Byzantine Ναισσός,
Slavic Niš, Turkish Niş, German
Nissa... Roman Emperor Constantine the Great was also born
in Niš!

OF THE HEART
Cultural Time Machine
www.serbia.travel
In Serbia the fragments of history fit
in a mosaic of such complexity and
workmanship that it takes breath
away! Its cultural heritage, ingrained
in the European culture, was rightfully granted a place of honour here.
It safeguards the collectively developed ideas upon which the cultural
identity of Serbia lies.

Religious
Journey
The spiritual landscape of Serbia
embraces an immeasurable treasure
of more than 200 Christian Orthodox temples with monumental
architecture and fresco-paintings.
Here, at the meeting place of the
East and the West, the construction
schools – from the Ras School to
the Morava School, from the Byzantine to the Romanic influences
– there arose the pillars of faith that
resist the transience of time.
These monasteries are at the main
routes of European cultural heritage
(Transromanica): Žiča, Studenica,
Gradac, Sopoćani, Đurđevi Stupovi,
and the Church of Saint Peter and
Paul.
From one temple to another, a pearl
string of Serbian spiritual heritage is
made: Dečani, Gračanica, Manasija,
Mileševa (with the White Angel
fresco), Ravanica, Ljubostinja, the
Patriarch Residence in Peć... New
centres of pilgrimage are in Fruška
Gora where as many as 16 monasteries are located!
www.serbia.travel
18
What makes religious travels in
Serbia even more precious are the
mosques in Novi Pazar, Niš, and
Belgrade with opulent ornaments, as
well as synagogues, cathedrals...
Did you know ?
Serbian icons are representations of Jesus Christ, the
Mother of God, and different saints, painted on wood
or canvas. They can be found
in all Christian Orthodox
temples and homes of
Orthodox Christians who
celebrate their family’s saint
day.
