A message from
Mayor Jaworsky
Bob Mavin
councillor, Ward 1
(Southwest)
Welcome to the spring edition of the Program and Activities
Guide!
As an age-friendly community, we care for and value all of
our citizens, regardless of age. This guide is packed with all
the programs and activities you need to keep healthy and
active the entire season, whether you like to play cards,
swim, dance, relax with yoga or have fun with your friends
playing pickleball. There is something for everyone to enjoy.
Every spring, hundreds of people in Waterloo participate in
environmental events and I encourage you to join us! There
are community clean ups, the 20 Minute Makeover, Earth
Hour and Waterloo Earth Day – plenty of opportunities
for you and your family to help protect and nurture our
environment. Please visit waterloo.ca/earthday for more
information.
One of the building blocks of making a great city is good
strategic planning. This is where, as a community, we pause
and take a good look at where we are and where we want
to be. Your ideas and input on issues and projects across the
city and the region will help shape the future of Waterloo.
Please visit waterloo.ca/strategicplan and use our online tool
to tell us what you think about Waterloo’s future and how
we can work together to make our city an even better place
to live, work, learn and play.
Be sure to stay current on the events happening around our
city by following us on Twitter and Facebook.

KINDY DRAMA
Our Kindy Program for pre-school children has been
developed by experts in early year development so very
young children learn to take their first steps into our fastmoving world with confidence. The key to this
is to allow children opportunities to develop
skills in verbal communication. These
highly creative classes involve storytelling,
dramatic play, speech training, creative
movement, songs and many language
development activities, all based around a
central theme. Some of the important life
skills our Kindy children learn include;
listening, sharing, taking turns, following
instructions, memory skills, vocalizing
thoughts and emotions.
PRIMARY PROGRAM
The Helen O’Grady Drama Academy believes the Primary
years of school are crucial in building a positive
approach to life. The extensive curriculum covering
these years is designed to quickly develop in creativity,
articulate communication and overall confidence.
Introductory activities develop spontaneous language work
and ad-lib skills, teaching children how to role play,
speak in full sentences and be spontaneous. By doing
so, young people become better at resolving conflict and
handling situations that may come up in their lives. Speech
work is always a very important part of the curriculum.
Children are trained, in a fun way, how to use their
voices effectively as a communication tool.
30
SPEECH WORK
Exercises include: Projection - training the children how to
breathe and use the full power in their young voices. Jaw, lip
and tongue exercises are used to develop good articulation.
Resonance exercises help with the tone and richness of their
voices. Expression exercises bring life and vitality to speech.
MOVEMENT AND IMPROVISATION
Children are taught how to use their bodies as an
expressive tool, using music, through mime and creative
movement. At the Primary level, children work on improvised
performance pieces teaching them how to ad-lib and speak
out with confidence and energy. Through the Helen O’Grady
method, children are able to take on a character, role-play and
make up their own lines in a creative way, and learn how to
sustain their language development, allowing multiple sentence
flow. At the end of the day this training helps children to become
articulate and expressive public speakers.
YOUTH PROGRAM
Designed to accommodate teenagers,
our Youth program offers further
opportunities to students with a
continued interest in drama. Whilst the
self-development aspect is continued in
youth theatre, the approach is more theatre
arts orientated. The varied and challenging
programme includes, voice work building
improvisations, mini-scripts monologues,
open ended duologues, soap operas, radio
plays and theatre games.

Become familiar with our facility by attending a public or
family swim. Pool schedules are available at
waterloo.ca/swim
How are we doing?
Your feedback is welcome at any time. Comment sheets
are available at the front desk. If you have a comment
about current lessons please let us know.
Lockers and jewelry
Lockers are provided for use with your own lock. Please
do not wear any jewelry while swimming. Remember
to lock your locker. We are not responsible for lost or
stolen items.
Missed lessons
If you miss a scheduled lesson, we are unfortunately
unable to make it up. You do not need to call us.
Shower before you swim
All swimmers must shower with soap and water before
entering the pool. Footwear (shoes or boots) is not
allowed near the showers or pool area. We offer two
choices: remove your footwear and go barefoot or
purchase reusable shoe covers (available at the reception
desk for 75¢).
Lesson start time
Swimmers should go to the pool deck at the lesson start
time (not earlier). Parents can escort their child to the
lesson on the first day to meet the instructor. Look for
signs on the pool deck with the name of your child’s swim
level (ex. Waterloo Splash 2) and wait for the instructor.
Observation gallery
Spectators are welcome to watch swimmers from our
second floor observation gallery (seats over 300).
Class transfers and new registrants
You may switch classes prior to the start of the third
lesson if space is available. We will accept new registrants,
if space is available, up to the beginning of the fifth lesson.
Swim level evaluations
Free swim level evaluations are available if you have been
out of lessons for more than a year. Call the Swimplex for
details.
Emergency closings
If lessons are cancelled unexpectedly, announcements will
be made on local radio stations. We are unable to make
up lessons cancelled due to emergency closures.
Instructor requests
We review all requests for specific instructors or
specific gender of instructor; however, we are unable to
guarantee that any specific request will be granted.
Feedback day
On the sixth lesson, one parent is encouraged to meet
the instructor on deck during the last 10 minutes of the
class to receive a verbal progress report. If you have
concerns about your child’s lessons, speak with the
aquatic supervisor. An evaluation form can be found at
waterloo.ca/evaluations
Appropriate levels
Your child’s instructor may recommend a change in level
if they feel your child is registered in an inappropriate
level. Swimplex staff reserve the right to move a child if
circumstances dictate.
Program and lesson cancellations
If enrollment is low, the City of Waterloo reserves the
right to cancel swim classes up to three days prior to
program start dates.
Progress memo
At the last lesson, a written progress memo is provided
and the instructor will determine the next recommended
swim level. Badges may be purchased at reception for all
Waterloo Splash and Preschool levels.
Photography/video policy
Patrons wishing to photograph and/or videotape
registered or supervised programs must receive
permission from staff before filming. This will be
permitted on the last day of lessons only. The use of all
cell phones and PDAs for this purpose is prohibited in
City of Waterloo recreation facility changerooms,
washrooms, pool decks and gallery.
Inclusion services
If your child (in a group lesson program) requires
one-on-one support, please contact the inclusion
coordinator at least three weeks prior to the lesson start
date at 519-741-2200 ext. 7228. Volunteers are subject to
availability.
Swimming diapers
Children who are not fully toilet trained must wear
water-tight elastic pants or specially designed disposable
swimming diapers (available at the Swimplex reception
desk for $2.00).
Illness/pool fouling
Do not send a child to lessons if they are not feeling
well or are not fully toilet trained. Pool fouling affects all
lessons in the pool. In the event of pool fouling, lessons
are conducted on the pool deck unless otherwise
announced. Refunds/credits are not given for pool fouling.

PRIVATE LESSONS
Private Lessons
Pre/Post Natal Waterfit
Age: 16Y+
$131.08
The water is a perfect environment
for pre and post natal women to
prepare for a birth and recuperate
following nine months of weight
gain and body shape changes. The
water counteracts the effect of
gravity, unloading the joints and
greatly reduces impact. The water
provides multi-directional resistance
for balanced muscle work and allows
individuals to change the workout
intensity to suit their needs. The
turbulence of the water makes the
core stabilizers of the body work
while toning the abdominal and back
muscles. Thermal conductivity keeps
the body refreshed throughout the
workout.

EVOLVE SKATEBOARD CAMP
AGE: 7Y-12Y
This program is delivered and supervised by Evolve Skate Camp in partnership with the City of
Waterloo. Does your child want to be the next pro skater? Or maybe they just want to learn a fun new
skill that may help them get home from school a little faster. Our camp focuses on improving campers’
fundamental physical skills like balance and coordination, while finding their style on the board.
Campers are given time to master tricks and challenge themselves to learn and develop. Our coaches
are on hand every step of the way to help correct flaws and accelerate learning. Campers also
participate in other sports and camp programming daily, for a well-rounded summer experience.
Campers are required to bring their own skateboard or scooter, CSA approved helmet, elbow pads,
wrist guards and kneepads. Staff/camper ratio 1:6.
Location: Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex Skate Park – 101 Father David Bauer Dr.

IN YOUR CITY
Waterloo’s natural areas
Do you live near a natural area?
Help us protect the natural areas in our city!
Respect property boundaries
Respect our wildlife
Encroachment is unauthorized use of public
land as an extension of one’s own property.
From mammals and birds, to reptiles,
amphibians, and insects, wildlife foster a
healthy forest and share it with residents
living nearby.
Altering public land by mowing, pruning, or
placing items such as garbage, yard waste,
sheds, fences, play equipment, composters,
vehicles, and bird feeders on public land
is not permitted. Encroachment negatively
impacts natural areas by smothering native
vegetation, introducing non-native species,
compacting soil and causing erosion.
Drain pools and hot tubs properly
Water from pools and hot tubs is generally
laden with chemicals that can have a
negative impact on vegetation and water
features when drained into a park or
natural area.
Place the drain tube on your property, away
from the park or natural area, to allow water
to filter into the soils in your yard.
Let wildlife feed from the forest
Wildlife relies on plants, soils and organic
debris for survival. When people harvest from
the forest, plants may be depleted allowing
undesirable plants to establish. Try planting
native plants in your garden to enjoy, while
leaving the wild plants for wildlife to use and
future generations to admire.
Waterloo is home to
non-poisonous snakes. A
healthy population of these
snakes around your property
is beneficial because they
can help keep local rodents
in check – more so than
cats!
A snake will slither away when startled and
will not hurt you. Teaching children to observe
wildlife from afar will help avoid confrontation
while respecting the wildlife and their habitat.
Please do not destroy burrows, nests or other
habitat and remember to always stay on
designated trails.

The Yellow Fish Road™ program is a hands-on environmental
activity for youth ages 7 and up. Participants paint “yellow fish”
