COLLUDING TO NOT HEAL: OR, A DEFICIENCY IN SELF-HEALING , continued from page 40
than fact or truth. The way it works with
health care is, “because so-and-so
practitioner was not nice to me, or didn’t
listen to me, I’m not going to follow
his/her recommendations,” or “because
I’m already paying a lot for health
insurance, I will not pay another dime
for supplements, massage,
acupuncture, or non-covered services.”
Who are we really spiting with such
thoughts and actions?
Lastly, most of us take our health for
granted. The body is so perfect that until
it starts to send us messages of aging,
through pain or through wrinkles, we
don’t realize the impact that our lifestyles
can have. We invest more in our homes
or cars, but ultimately, our bodies are
our first and last homes.
We need to do our work. Learning and
healing always feels good. While we’re
climbing the mountain, we may sweat,
slip and fall, and take some risks, but
when we get to the top, the panorama is
fantastic and the vista and sense of
accomplishment stays with us for a
lifetime.
Many cultures believe in an after-life
and/or reincarnation – what we don’t
accomplish in this life will need to be
addressed in a future existence.
However, for most of us, this is a very
abstract and remote motivation.
If we don’t heal for our selves, then we
still have a need to heal for our families
and our society. Our negative traits pass
on to the next generation. Our compulsive consumption is destroying our
planet. We all need to get to the root
cause of our dis-ease if we want
humanity to continue and to prosper.
Sometimes these issues seem so large,
complex or overwhelming that we don’t
even know how to begin. There are
many techniques of taking down a wall.
If you don’t have a huge wrecking ball,
then you can take it down one brick at a
time. Establishing clear goals and
priorities, using a journal (see my
previous article on this topic), getting
professional help and joining a
community (including a yoga class, for
example) are all techniques that can
help.

YOGA LIVING

Most of our problems in modern
society are multifactorial. That
recurrent back
pain or persistent
anxiety is not just
mechanical or
psychological, it
also resists
healing because
the foods we eat
are inflammatory,
the TV news is
stress-producing,
we don’t sleep
well, our hormonal
systems are
confused by the
toxins in our air
and water, and we
haven’t adequately
explored how
much our suboptimal patterns
of thought,
movement and
energy came from
our parents and
have been passed
on to our children.
Therefore, as we develop plans to simplify
and heal, we need to address each of these
components of health. Each aspect of our
program will contribute a few percentage
points to the healing curve. If you can heal
just 5-10% per year, you will see exponential
growth of your health. Wouldn’t you invest in
an bank account that assured you that rate
of interest?
Mahatma Gandhi first said, “God is Truth,”
later changing his statement to, “Truth is
God.” Others say, “God is Love,” and, “Love is
God.” So, let’s think of the Grand Equation
as Truth = God = Love. It’s about loving our
selves enough to invest in our lives, seeking
out Truth and Love rather than letting fear and
other rationalizations keep us on the surface
for decades and generations.

Aphrodisiac... What an erotic, sexy word.
A
WORD THAT EVOKES IMAGES OF STRAWBERRIES
DRIPPING IN LUSCIOUS CHOCOLATE AND … I’ M SURE
YOU CAN IMAGE THE REST. Today, we use so-called
aphrodisiacs with a grin, and only with slight stock in their magical
properties, but for our ancestors, these foods were precious.
Procreation was a necessity and poor eating habits led to decreased
libido and infertility. It is no wonder that certain foods, especially those
shaped like sexual organs, were honored for their amorous properties.
The word, aphrodisiac, comes from Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love,
and is used to define the various forms of stimulation thought to arouse
i
sexual excitement. Aphrodisiacs – for consumption – are broken into three
categories: herbs, vitamins and minerals, and foods. Herbs increase sex drive
and have also been linked to increased pleasure. Damiana, which grows in
warm climates, is renowned as a woman’s herb and is reported to
strengthen the ovum and balance female hormones. Calamus, which should
be used as an oil, is said to promote blood flow to the male genital region,
and Ginseng is said to increase testosterone. Cardamom, tiny black seeds
used in a variety of dishes, contains two androgens (the hormones that
increase sexual desire in men) and cineole, a compound known to stimulate
the central nervous system. Ginger, a close relative, is the food world’s
ii
Viagra. Vitamins and minerals are thought to have been considered sacred
because they provided nourishment, which many ancients were lacking, and
they also promote good fertility.
Who among us would not savor a good meal with someone we love? Some
may prefer an evening out, while others relish the opportunity to cook for the
object of their affection. And who wouldn’t toss an aphrodisiac or two (or
more!) into their Valentine’s Day menu! A romantic dinner can put you in the
mood for love; not just because of the intimacy created by candlelight and
iii
soft music, but because food has historically played a roll in our sexuality.
According to research conducted by Dr. Alan Hirch at the Smell and Taste
Foundation in Chicago, men are most often aroused by the smell of pumpkin
iv
pie (see the November/December 2006 issue of Yoga Living for an excellent
recipe), while women are more intrigued by licorice.

Massage & Healing Arts
Personal Vitamin Program
DR. FREEDMAN WITH PATIENT.
We now know that
looks are deceiving.
Even the healthiest
looking person can be
deficient in nutrients
due to genetics,
malabsorption, age,
lifestyle, and physical
differences.
So how do we
know which
vitamins and
herbs our bodies
need?
A
LL OF US AT ONE TIME OR
ANOTHER HAVE BEEN
TEMPTED TO START TAKING
A VITAMIN, OR , THE NEW
MILLENNIUM TERM, A
“NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT.”
Maybe we saw a TV commercial
touting the latest remedy to cure
chronic fatigue and various aches and
pains...
Are these claims true or false?
In the past decade, we have
witnessed an increased growth in the
use of vitamin and herbal remedies.
What was once considered
nontraditional is now becoming
mainstream medicine. In a recent
article published in the Journal of the
American Medical Association,
investigators showed the benefits of
using antioxidants such as vitamin E
for the prevention of dementia.
Routinely ophthalmologists
recommend their patients take
Lutein to prevent macular
degeneration, and it is now common
for cardiologists to recommend folic
acid for patients with heart disease.
These are just a few examples of the
medical uses of vitamins and herbs.
For years we thought
that taking a One-A-Day vitamin was
the best method. This contained
many types of vitamins in a
convenient daily dosage. The
problem with a prepackaged vitamin
is that the amount of each nutrient is
fixed. Studies have shown that half of
all patients taking a multivitamin are
functionally deficient in one or more
essential nutrients that are vital to
long term health.
In 1993, a cutting-edge technology
that can accurately measure
individual levels of nutrients in your
system was developed called
Functional Intracellular Analysis
(FIA) by Spectracell Laboratories.
Utilization of this test may improve
the quality and length of your life.
This new test offers you the
advantage of obtaining your own
specific profile of vitamin, mineral,
fatty acid, antioxidant, carbohydrate,
and amino acid deficiencies. Research
shows that these deficiencies suppress
the function of the immune system,
contributing to diseases such as
arthritis, Parkinson’s, cancer, diabetes,
heart disease, stroke, alcoholism,
substance abuse, behavioral disorders,
chronic fatigue, multiple sclerosis and
osteoporosis.
This special test measures the
intracellular function of essential
nutrients within your white blood
cells. White blood cells carry a
person’s nutritional history for four
to six months. Other blood tests can
only provide someone’s nutritional
history for one snapshot moment in
time and can only detect a few
deficiencies. Therefore, this new test
is essential for anyone concerned
with achieving and maintaining
excellent health and wellness.
Who should get this FIA test?
Ideally everyone! Even people who
eat a balanced diet, exercise, and take
vitamins can benefit. Specifically, this
test combined with another urine test
can uncover the true causes of
ADHD, depression, anxie.ty,
headaches, insomnia, fatigue, and
chronic pain. In addition, anyone
who smokes, drinks alcohol, takes
any drugs, or maintains a sedentary
lifestyle should be tested.
Is this FIA test covered by
health insurance?
Yes, PPO insurances cover most of
the cost of this test. The coinsurance
is about $75. For uninsured and
HMO patients, the discount rate is
about $275. Your blood is drawn in
your doctor’s office and the results
are available in two to three weeks.
Your doctor will explain the results to
you in detail and order all your
necessary vitamins from Douglass
Laboratories. This is the only test of
its kind to uncover your deficient
nutrients accurately! So if you are
inclined to start a serious vitamin
regimen and continue on the road to
wellness, we urge you to discuss with
your holistic doctor these options
available for specifically measuring
your blood nutrient levels.

Try this menu for an erotic (and tasty) Valentine’s
Day treat:
Fruit with Honey Yogurt Dip
Fruit, the womb that surrounds the seeds of plants, is treasured throughout the
world as not only a sensual pleasure but also as a sweet treat. According to
Gabriele D’Annunzio, an Italian poet and author, the way a woman eats fruit
determines her amorousness: the larger the bites, the more “redoubtable love
v
partner” she is. Honey, honored in ancient Egypt as a cure for impotency and
infertility, was given such prestige in the Middle Ages that it was made into
wine, called Mead. Ancient couples would drink this celebrated drink on the full
moon of their marriage month, hence the “honeymoon.”
You will need: A variety of fresh fruits, including strawberries
and bananas; 1 cup plain yogurt, 1/3 cup orange blossom honey;
1 tablespoon mint, minced; fennel (optional)
Blend all ingredients together until smooth. Drizzle over the fruits or dip the
fruits. Sprinkle with fennel seeds, if desired.
Romaine & Cucumber Salad with
Garlic Dressing
Due to their shapes, both romaine lettuce stalks and cucumbers have been
associated with the male genitalia since farmers first farmed. Garlic, on the
other hand, is typically not thought of as an enticer of the opposite sex, due to
its pungent aroma. The Egyptians, Chinese, Japanese, Jews, Greeks, Romans,
and many Europeans, however, revere garlic for its amorous qualities. In fact,
according to the Talmud, the authoritative body of Jewish tradition, garlic was
believed to increase passion and fertility, enhancing marital bliss, and was, in
vi
the fourth century, prescribed for consumption on the Sabbath.
You will need: 4 tablespoons minced garlic; 1 teaspoon Belle
Aroma (or other herbed salt), 1 teaspoon black pepper; 1 cup olive oil;
2/3 cup balsamic vinegar; 2 tablespoons cold water; 1 large head
romaine lettuce, cut into shreds; 1 large cucumber, peeled and cubed
In a deep bowl, toss the lettuce and cucumber. Mix the vinegar, water, garlic,
salt, and pepper in a jar with a lid. Add oil and shake until well blended. Pour, to
taste, over the vegetables and mix. Separate into two bowls and serve with
bread and butter.
French Bread with Saffron Butter
Butter: 4 ounces heavy whipping cream, 1/2 teaspoon saffron.
In a container with a top, add the cream and shake until the cream begins to
solidify. Add the saffron while the cream is still slightly liquid, add the saffron
and continue to shake until solid. Serve immediately. (Note: this butter will not
keep for more than 48 hours, due to a lack of preservatives.)
French Bread: 2 cups all purpose flour (King Arthur is my
favorite); 1 teaspoon sea salt, finely ground; 1 teaspoon active dry yeast;
1/2 cup water
Due to the complex nature of this bread, a bread maker is highly recommended.
In bread maker, add water at room temperature. Pour in flour and add salt and
yeast. Set the bread maker for a French loaf. By hand, mix the dry ingredients
together. Pour in the water, at room temperature. By hand, kneed the bread
together for fifteen minutes. Place in an oiled bowl and rotate to coat; cover and
place in a dark, warm place for two hours. Punch down the loaf and remove
from the bowl. Shape into a round or loaf and place on a greased baking sheet.
Heat oven to 400˚ and bake for 15 minutes; lower the heat to 350˚ and continue
to bake for 30 minutes, until the bread is golden brown and crusty.

Asparagus & Gruyere Soufflé
Known as the most phallic of vegetables, asparagus is a member of the lily
family. Asparagus contains compounds called steroid glycosides, which
vii
stimulate hormone production. A regular cast member in erotic literature, like
the Kama Sutra, this tall, green vegetable is celebrated for its fertility
promotion and hormone regulation in women.
You will need: 4 1 pound of fresh, green asparagus, cut into 1
inch pieces; 5 tablespoons high quality salted butter (I recommend
Icelandic butter); 2/3 cup whole milk; 2 large eggs, 4 ounces Gruyere
cheese, finely grated; 1/2 teaspoon pepper.
Preheat the oven to 450˚. Generously butter two single-serving soufflé dishes,
using 1 tablespoon butter each. Steam asparagus over medium heat until soft,
but do not overcook (asparagus cooks very quickly). Divide asparagus into the
dishes. Over medium heat, melt the remaining butter. Wisk in milk and the egg
yolks, whisking until light and cooking for up to three minutes or until sauce is
as thick as heavy cream. Remove from heat and whisk in the cheese, whisking
until the cheese is melted. In another bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff
peaks form. Fold the egg whites into the cheese mixture and spoon the
mixture into the asparagus cups. Sprinkle both dishes evenly with the pepper.
Bake fifteen minutes or until raised and golden brown.
Mashed Sweet Potatoes
Notorious for their ability to stimulate the feminine sex drive, these root
vegetables are a tasty, sweet treat. Harvested in early autumn, sweet potatoes
have an orange flesh that ranges from peach to deep tangerine. In addition to
its properties of invigoration, the sweetness of this oblong vegetable is
deepened by adding cardamom, an aphrodisiac in its own right (see above).
You will need: 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and diced; 1/4
cup wheat milk (I prefer Pacific); 2 tablespoons salted butter; 1
tablespoon cardamom; mint leaves (optional)
46
YOGA LIVING
January/February 2007
Steam the sweet potatoes until soft. Mash with the milk, butter, and cardamom.
Whip with an electric mixture to soften the texture and form into a mound onto
the plate next to the soufflé. Garnish the potatoes with fresh mint leaves, if
desired.
Chocolate Dipped Strawberries
The most potent love-inducing, mood-altering chemical found in chocolate is
an amphetamine-like amino acid called phenlethylamine, a natural brain
chemical that stimulates the central nervous system, elevates heart rate and
blood pressure, and causes a “high,” similar to that of marijuana, chocolate’s
chemical cousin. Both substances are aphrodisiacs and stimulate the same
viii
receptors in the brain. There is nothing more sensual, scrumptious, or
satisfying dessert than combining this magical glaze with strawberries.
You will need: 1 large bar dark chocolate (Sprüngli is my
number one choice, but a high quality, high percentage dark chocolate
will work just as well); 1 pound fresh strawberries
In a double boiler, over medium heat, bring the water in the lower half to a
boil. Break up the chocolate into small pieces and place in the upper pot. Stir
constantly until the chocolate has melted. Pour into a warm dish and serve
with freshly washed and dried strawberries. Dip strawberries, coating
completely, and enjoy!

Are You In Love...
WITH YOUR FOOD?
WHAT KIND OF
RELATIONSHIP DO YOU
HAVE WITH YOUR FOOD?
Is it a love/hate relationship?
Is it an obsessive/compulsive
relationship?
Is it a relationship of unmet
expectations and confusion?
If you are fortunate, it is a relationship of nourishment, satisfaction,
and contentment.
What would it mean to you if you really
were in love with your food? For me it
means that I love myself, therefore I care
about what goes into my body. Loving
myself means that I choose my food
carefully. Because I know that I literally
become what I eat, I only eat food that I
love! When I buy or prepare food for
myself, I only choose foods that I like
and that work well in my body.
The following are a few tips for
falling in love with your food:
Re-connect with your body.
In order to know if your body loves a
food, you have to pay attention to your
body’s response. You may love the taste
of brownies, but does refined flour and
sugar work well in your body? Your gut is
where you digest your food and is the
center of your intuition. Pay attention to
what your gut is telling you, both on a
physical level and an intuitive level!
Eat the foods you enjoy and see
how you feel after eating them.
You may have heard that broccoli is good
for you, but do you really enjoy eating
it? You may think that you enjoy donuts
and coffee, but do they truly make you
feel good in your mind, body, and spirit?
Try something new.
Try something exotic like a fresh lychee
nut or durian fruit (available at international food stores). Be adventurous and
daring. Have you ever had okra? Maybe
today is the day!
Pay attention to the sensory
aspects of your food.
Consume fruits and vegetables with bright
colors such blueberries, pomegranates, red
beets, or purple cauliflower. (Purchase
local and/or organic to avoid added dyes
that may not be on the label.) Try new
textures found in sprouted grain bread or
an avocado. Before you put food in your
mouth, inhale its aroma.
Make a conscious effort to
connect with your food.
Consider where it came from. Who grew
it? Were they nourished, satisfied, and
content? Support a local farmer and get
to know him or her. Being connected to
your food means being connected to its
source, which ultimately brings you back
to connecting to yourself, because the
same energy that grows our food is the
same energy that grows us.
Express gratitude.
Whatever you choose to put in your body,
give thanks for the nourishment. If you
begrudgingly eat your healthy food, how
much love are you really showing yourself? Eat with a thankful heart and you
will begin to love the food you are eating.
If – after trying the tips in this article –
you still have not fallen in love with
your food, then it is an opportunity for
you dig deeper.
Instead of searching for answers
outside of yourself, look for the
answers inside.
Do you love yourself? Do you love your
job? Are you in love with the people in
your life? The answers may not come
immediately. They will come when you
are truly ready to see them and face
yourself. It is not always easy to face the
truth of what is inside, but when you
start to embrace all of yourself (including
your eating habits) falling in love with
your food becomes innate to your way of
being.
Each day you are faced with choices
about how to live your life. If your life is
not working, consider where you want to
start making better choices to add love
into your life. Maybe you want to add
another healthy food in to your lifestyle.
Maybe you want to find a friend who
really understands who you are and
supports you 100%. Perhaps you want to
do something just for you… something
you really love.

T
HERE ARE TIMES IN OUR
LIVES WHEN WE FEEL LIKE WE
ARE TOTALLY IN SURRENDER
MODE, WILLING TO JUST LIE BACK
AND ALLOW SPIRIT TO CARRY US AS
IF ON A MAGIC CARPET RIDE. A state
movement of life. Tantrics believe that the most
powerful energy is sexual energy. Tantric practice
shows you how to circulate this energy around
your own body and then move it between you
and your partner. You will discover how to take
the sexual feelings you have in your genitals and
to move them up to different areas of your body
and ultimately to your brain, where they are
experienced as ecstasy. As this energy moves
through your body, it sets off fireworks en route.
The Dalai Lama’s definition of Tantra is,
“The yoga of imagination, to achieve
Divinity.”
of continuous sivasana? How often do we
truly allow for that? Up until fairly recently,
almost never for this yogini. Yoga provides us
the perfect opportunity to be both giver and
receiver of Divine energy, whether you call it
chi, prana, qi, kundalini or simply... love.
I invite you to sit for a moment in the
stillness of your mind and fullness of your
heart. Breathe in, not just life giving oxygen,
but soul sustaining bliss. Feel it move
through every fiber of your being, as you
acknowledge the absolute intertwined
nature, inextricable and quite palpable sense
of Oneness with all that is. Allow for such a
state of being that you have no clue where
you begin and the next living, breathing
entity ends. Imagine knowing for certain
that separation only exists as a mental
construct. Could you live your life in that
exquisitely altered state?
Over the years, I have willingly visited that
nirvana, in the presence of loving partners,
far more often since immersing myself in
yoga and tantra in particular. Since
exploring the “art of expansive weaving”
which was set into motion by attending a
weekend with Charles and Caroline Muir, in
2004, I have discovered a world that up
until that time, had been fraught, in my
mind, at least, with controversy. Our culture
teaches us that tantra is first and only about
“gettin’ it on,” for as long as we can, and
having multiple orgasms as sensationalized
by the media a few years back, when Sting
made a comment about something like 8 to
12 hour sexual encounters as a student and
practitioner of tantra.
When people who are unfamiliar with the
subject, and they ask me about it, I tell
them in simple terms that it is about sex
being more than what goes on below the
belly button. I have been blessed to have
been welcomed into the tantra community
in many areas of the country. The only key
to admission, it seems, is an open and
I n s i d e Yo g a L i v i n g
loving heart. I have learned so much about
healing, communication, reaching deep
down within myself for truth as it exists for
me, allowing for the Goddess energy to flow
unabated, being both generous giver and
gracious receiver. My teachers have been
everyone with whom I have shared sacred
space, whether it be in a puja circle or more
private setting. It is a very honoring practice
that allows partners to simply ‘be’ in each
other’s presence. Eye-gazing, breathing
together, moving this exquisite energy
through each chakra brings with it the
ability to merge, not only with the other,
but with the ultimate Beloved.
Sacred sexuality has at its core, acknowledging the Highest in yourself and your
partner; in yogic terms, the energy of Shiva
and Shakti as the principles of the Divine
Masculine and the Divine Feminine. Sex is
but a part of it and according to many
teachers, an infinitesimal one at that. It is
about energy that comes from the place of
that open heart. An image that arises in my
mind is from a song I remember from the
70s/80s by a group called Bright Morning
Star. The lyrics were something like, “If I
were the whole world’s lover... if I could open wide,
without taking cover... .” That same energy
that exists between two people in the practice, can be translated into 24/7 interaction
with anyone who crosses your path.
According to Dr. Judy Kuriansky from her
book, The Complete Idiot’s Guide To Tantric
Sex, this often misunderstood and
sensationalized intimate interaction is
about the flow and exchange of energy, the
Among my circle of friends are Kim and Brad
Walker, tantra teachers from the Houston,
Texas area, www.tantrichearts.com. They
eloquently describe tantra in this way,
“Tantra’s basic philosophy is finding joy in
everything you do. It involves using your
personal energy to empower your life and
manifest whatever you desire. Being sexual
beings, our energy is often easily focused in
the sex chakra. (considered the second, or
sacral chakra) Tantra teaches how to harness
our personal energy and channel it with love
and consciousness.”
Amy Storm first learned the practices of
tantra as a celebate, in the personal journey
of sacred intimate. “There is a tantric way
of being, that doesn’t involve sex at all.” She
refers to tantra as, “Your intimate Divine...
who you are at your core, and the most
personal ways of expressing yourself. A
sense of inner freedom, very much an internal state. Once you get it, you know you
have it.” www.blissfulbodycollection.com
I have been enjoying with deep gratitude
the experience of someone who is teaching
me the beauty of, as we have described it,
being ‘worked by love,’ a sense of allowing
myself to be a willing recipient and
transmitter of something so profound that
often there are no words to describe it. As a
wordsmith, that is frustrating, and yet
delightful to be in such a transcendent state.
It informs and impacts on every aspect of
my life these days. What if sacred sexuality
were simply just about seeing God(dess) as
our significant other, and when embodied in
another human being, it becomes even that
much more extraordinary?

THAT ITS STARTLING INCREASE IS NOT,
AS SOME WOULD CLAIM, A PURELY

OF HUMAN GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT.
All fired up by the film, I eagerly signed up
for an all-day conference slated to mobilize
community action to reduce dependence
on fossil fuels. The conference had an
impressive array of presenters, some of
whom had forged environmental policy and
headed government projects to decrease
automobile traffic. But, regretfully, like
many other conferences, it did not address
what I see as the root of the current crisis:
large-scale personal disconnection from
reality.
Material progress has allowed ordinary
people like us to individually plunder
natural resources and pollute the planet on
a scale once reserved for the “filthy rich.”
No matter how environmentally conscious
we claim to be, simply being a 21st

landfills. Self-centered success is awarded

our cars whenever we wanted to? Imagine,
if you contemplated a move to another
community in your region, what it would
be like not to be able to travel many miles
by car simply to check out homes for sale.
Frequent moving is an established
American tradition. Don’t ask me how
many trips I made to Home Depot last
summer to investigate and purchase items
to upgrade my current home! Do we have
time to limit our travels to the schedule
offered by public transit? Besides, we need
our cars to lug things!
Are we ready to live in less spacious and
more functional quarters to conserve energy
and land? In a less-polluting world, is
unlimited tourism still an option? And how
am I going to stay healthy and live longer
(my inalienable right and responsibility!)
without easy access to nutritional
supplements in plastic containers? If I’m
serious about sustainability, then I may
have to limit my choice of foods to what’s
locally grown. Sounds like living in a thirdworld country!
If I’m having doubts about so-called
environmentally conscious people like
myself being able to radically reduce our
footprint on the planet, am I deluded
enough to think that the masses to whom
those TV ads are aimed are about to adopt
a life of self-denial in an effort to save

perfect solution. Rather than focusing on
reversing the damage, perhaps we should
see this as an opportunity to face our
mortality. By simply admitting the
impermanence of all things, including
ourselves, we may be more inclined to live
fully in the moment and not be obsessed
with amassing material wealth and raping
the earth in the process. Facing our
powerlessness could be the first step of a
12-Step Program toward recovery and
reunion with Reality.
Henri Nouwen, the beloved Dutch
theologian, has, I believe, a message for
these times in his 1975 book, Reaching Out:
The Three Movements of the Spiritual Life,
“What keeps us from opening ourselves to
the reality of the world? Could it be that we
cannot accept our powerlessness and are
only willing to see those wounds that we
can heal? Could it be that we do not want
to give up our illusion that we are masters
over our world and, therefore, create our
own Disneyland where we can make
ourselves believe that all events of life are
safely under control?”
“The End Is Near” isn’t necessarily a
message of despair. It can herald a new
beginning, a discovery of the magnificence
of our true selves and the humbling
realization that everything we are and have
is a gift to be shared.
Meanwhile, maybe I’ll see you at the bus
stop!

After!
Using Feng Shui to
Realize Your Dreams
O
NCE YOU HAVE PINPOINTED
WHAT YOU DESIRE IN YOUR
LIFE, USE THE
ENERGY THEORY OF
CHINESE
FENG SHUI
TO
REALIZE YOUR INTENTIONS OR
DREAMS. Align your thoughts, habits and
space to a new reality you wish to acquire.
This helps your whole body and
environment circulate in a healthy and
vibrant way, promoting the exact results
you want to happen.
Use Imagery to Visualize Goals
Because visualizing goals is not always easy,
instill reminders in your environment. For
example, if you want to travel to Paris,
remind yourself of that wish with a poster
or photo of the romantic city in your
home. Not only will it keep your wish fresh
but it tells people who enter your home
about your dreams and aspirations. Perhaps
one of your visitors will help you find your
way to Paris!
Attract Helpful People & Travel
You can also use the Feng Shui Octagon or
energetic map to adjust or improve the
energy in your space. The nine areas
(including the center) hold a different
energy and correspond to specific areas in
your life. If you need people to help you
achieve a goal, go to the Helpful People or
Travel area in your home, assess the room’s
energetic condition and adjust accordingly.
This area attracts benefactors or guardians
and is also associated with your network,
business contacts, associates and friends.
The area covering Helpful People or Travel
is located in the right front area of a space.
It has a metal energy and corresponds to
the number 6 and the colors gray, white
and black. Metal is the agent of
communication and creativity and helps
people make better connections or move
quickly. This area is also associated with the
male members of a family – husband, sons
or brothers.
Keep this area clean and focus only on
what you truly want. Realize that less is
more. There is no need to have an entire
52

wall full of pictures of Paris –
one will do as
long as it represents your exact
dream or goal.
For example, an
image of a
couple kissing
on a bridge that
“might” be in
Paris is not
enough. Instead,
choose a photo
of the Eiffel
Tower or a spot
along the Seine. Be specific.
Leverage the Five Elements
Combine the Feng Shui Octagon with the
five elements: water, wood, fire, earth and
metal. These elements help maximize the
power of your space and intentions. In the
Helpful People or Travel corner, use the
power of the five elements constructively
by using earth, as earth feeds metal and by
using metal itself. Remind yourself that fire
diminishes metallic strength.
Be sure to recognize the direct influence of
this specific area on the Wealth corner. For
example, you can sell a home successfully
when Helpful People come your way, such
as a talented real estate agent or mortgage
company ready to finance the next buyer.
Make sure these two sides of the octagon
are well balanced to enjoy maximum
benefit. They act like a seesaw – both sides
must be balanced to move forward.
Sometimes we want less of a good thing. If
you are traveling too much and need to
regroup and calm down, diminish the
energy entering a specific area. Accomplish
this by introducing fire (fire melts metal),
using the area less or introducing the
intention which shows you are settling
down more such as a picture of you in a
comfy chair.
Before...
Activate the Area
You can activate The Helpful
People or Travel area in many
different ways. For the outside of
your property, remove any
obstacles so it is clean and free of
debris. Repair your fence or buy a new
mailbox with visible lettering. Consider
adding metal chimes, which will ensure
constant movement and an energy flow or
add a metallic sculpture, wind charmer or
birdfeeder. When designing flower beds in
this space, use whites, grays or silvers and
avoid red for maximum effect.
Inside the house, use white or metallic colors
and add pictures of past or desired travels.
Some people place a water fountain to instill
continuous movement or install an extra
light to attract additional energy. Consider
using water colors, meaning blue and black,
to create a stronger effect. You can also
install an incense burner with a nice homey
smell. As this corner of the house is
associated with benefactors, consider placing
pictures of your mentor, a special family
member such as a favorite grandparent, or a
statue of a deity or guardian.
Work together with Others
Remember – you do not live in a vacuum
and everyone depends in some way upon
others to realize dreams and goals. Ask
yourself who can help you, then attract
those benefactors or special energies into
your surroundings and enjoy the human or
divine assistance.
