Riverside, along with the Archdiocese of New York and the Diocese of Brooklyn/Queens, does not encourage
or endorse programs that coach students for the TACHS. The TACHS is a highly secure exam; therefore,
programs that claim to have copies of the test are likely to be invalid. In addition, the test results of students
who participate in these programs frequently offer distorted profiles of students’ abilities. Students who do
well in elementary school can expect to do well on the TACHS. Turn to page 27 of this handbook for more
information regarding the content of the test, test-taking tips, and a practice test.

• If you are not enrolled in a Catholic elementary school, verify that the codes of the
three test sites you have chosen have been entered correctly.

required. Personal checks are not accepted and will be returned along with
your Registration Form.

your teachers/counselors to make your high school choices.
• Plan to arrive at your test site at 8:15 A.M. on the day of the test. Remember, the test
site is where you take the examination, not necessarily the school you wish to attend
in the fall.

test site.

you to the test.

FACTS ABOUT THE TACHS
The Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools (TACHS) will test eighth grade students who
are interested in attending a Catholic high school beginning in September 2015. In order to be
admitted into Catholic high schools, students must take an admissions examination in November
2014. The results from that examination, along with school records and other information, are
then sent to the high school principals to assist them in making admission decisions. Each
student’s information will be sent to three high schools of his/her choice. Results also will be sent
to the Catholic elementary schools within the Archdiocese of New York or the Diocese of Brooklyn/
Queens.
ACADEMIC SKILLS TESTED
The TACHS measures academic achievement in reading, language arts, and mathematics, along
with general reasoning skills. The test has been developed with the advice and approval of
diocesan representatives.
EXAMINATION FEE
A nonrefundable examination fee of $52.00 will include registration materials, this Student
Handbook, test materials, and the reporting of scores to three high schools of a student’s choice.
Duplicate registrations may result in a processing fee.
TEST CANDIDATES
The TACHS is only for current eighth grade students. Students wishing to apply to a Catholic high
school for a grade other than the ninth grade should apply directly to that high school. A student
may take the TACHS examination only once.
PARENT/GUARDIAN REPORTS
A Home Report will be provided for each student after high school notifications have been mailed
in January 2015. For Catholic school students within the Archdiocese of New York or the Diocese
of Brooklyn/Queens, the Home Report will be sent to the elementary school for distribution. For
public, private, and non-diocesan school students, the Home Report will be sent to the student’s
home address. All TACHS test results are final. No rescoring will be done.
SPECIAL TEST ACCOMMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS
The only accommodation allowed will be extended testing time (time and a half). An Eligibility
Form and further instructions for students needing extended testing time are located on page 10
of this handbook.
If a student will have difficulty with stairs leading into a test site or with stairs, doorways, or the
like within a test site, please contact your diocesan office.

ADMIT CARDS (Admission into TACHS)
YOU MUST BRING YOUR ADMIT CARD TO THE TEST SITE ON EXAM DAY.
Applicants should receive their Admit Cards the week of October 27, 2014, if the Registration
Form was submitted on time. If you have not received your Admit Card by November 3, 2014, call
1-866-618-2247. Students attending a Catholic elementary school should check with their teacher
before calling.
When you receive your Admit Card, please review it to verify that all information is accurate. Write
your name, TACHS ID, and Test Site Code on the front of this handbook. Keep this handbook until
March 2015, when the examination process is complete.
Check the following:
• Your name and address
• The date and the time of the examination
• The test site name and the address of the school where you are scheduled to take the
examination
Your test site will not necessarily be the high school you wish to attend in fall 2015.
Every effort will be made to assign you to one of your test site choices.
If your name and/or address are incorrect on the card, please bring the Admit Card indicating
those changes to your test site on the day of testing.
Please fill in the following:
• Enter the names and TACHS Code numbers for your three high school choices. (See the
Choosing Your High Schools section in this handbook on page 13.)
• The signature of a parent or guardian is required to show agreement with your choices.
• The high school codes must be transferred to your answer document on the day of testing in
order for your results to be sent to your three choices.
YOU WILL NOT BE ADMITTED INTO THE EXAM WITHOUT THIS CARD.

CHOOSING YOUR HIGH SCHOOLS
THE SELECTION PROCESS
• Once registered for the TACHS, you will have to choose three high schools to which you want
to apply. Remember, the testing site has no bearing on your high school choice.
• These three high school choices will receive your TACHS scores.
• Making choices about which high school to attend is very important, and you should consider
your choices carefully.
• The high schools’ websites, along with open house information, will be available through
www.tachsinfo.com.
• Parents/guardians should accompany students to high school open houses and read school
literature before selecting three high school choices.
• Also discuss your choices with your teacher, guidance counselor, or principal to determine
which schools will be the best match for you.
• Be realistic in your choices.
• Make sure that you are eligible for the schools to which you apply.
• Determine daily travel time from your home to school, and be sure that you are willing to
travel the distance involved.
• Admission and scholarship decisions are the responsibility of the individual high school.
HIGH SCHOOL CODES
• When you receive your Admit Card, print the school name and TACHS Code of your first,
second, and third high school choices.
• Many high schools have the same name, so be sure to include the unique TACHS High
School Code, which can be found in the Open House Information beginning on page 17 of this
handbook.
• Make sure to accurately fill in the TACHS High School Codes. If your codes are incorrect, your
scores will be sent to the wrong high schools.
• Do not put a school choice down more than once. It does not increase your chances of selection
by that high school.
• IF YOU DO NOT LIST ANY SCHOOLS ON YOUR ANSWER DOCUMENT, YOUR
SCORES WILL NOT BE SENT TO ANY HIGH SCHOOLS.
• No changes or corrections to high school choices will be made after the test is
taken.
• Bring your completed Admit Card to your test site. At this time, you will have to transfer the
TACHS High School Code numbers onto your answer document.

APPLICANT RECORDS
FOR STUDENTS ATTENDING A CATHOLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN THE
ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW YORK OR THE DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN/QUEENS
Your Applicant Record is available to your elementary school via the Internet once you have
registered for the exam. The last day to complete the Applicant Record online will be December 9,
2014. Your principal, elementary school teacher, or counselor must complete the TACHS Applicant
Record. Beginning December 10, your three Catholic high school choices will be able to access your
completed Applicant Record via the Internet.
FOR STUDENTS ATTENDING A PUBLIC, PRIVATE, OR NON-DIOCESAN SCHOOL
Parents are requested to complete Section A of the Applicant Record found on page 15 in this
handbook before submitting it to the student’s eighth grade teacher, counselor, or principal, who
will complete the remaining three sections. It can be photocopied as needed. Upon completion, a
school official will make three copies of the forms and mail them to the high schools indicated.
These forms must be received by the designated high schools by December 10, 2014. Failure to
return this form to the high schools may prevent your being considered for admission into the high
schools to which you are applying.
To assist the admissions process, it is important that high schools receive
• the final grades pertaining to Grade 6 and Grade 7,
• the first quarter or trimester grades for Grade 8, and
• all standardized testing results, conduct, effort, and attendance.
NOTE TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS: By registering for the TACHS Examination, you consent to
the release of your child’s student records.
If additional information is needed about a student for any of the schools, you may call the high
schools directly. (See Open House Information beginning on page 17 of this handbook.)
DO NOT return the Applicant Record to the TACHS Exam Office. Ask a school official
to send it to your child’s three high school choices.
SCHOLARSHIP AND FINANCIAL AID
Scholarship and financial aid decisions are made by each individual high school. Questions
regarding scholarships and financial aid should be directed to them directly. The Diocese of New
York, the Diocese of Brooklyn/Queens, and Riverside have no information regarding these school
decisions.

CONTENT OF THE TACHS EXAMINATION
The Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools contains subtests measuring both achievement
and ability. The tests, with brief descriptions, are as follows:
READING
The Vocabulary test presents each word in the context of a short phrase or sentence. You are to
choose the answer that most nearly means the same as that word. Approximately equal numbers
of nouns, verbs, and modifiers are tested.
The Reading Comprehension test consists of passages that vary in length from a few
paragraphs to a full page. The passages may be drawn from fiction, fables, tales, poetry, interviews,
diaries, biographical sketches, science and social studies materials, and other nonfiction. Many
of the passages are excerpts from previously published works. Approximately two-thirds of the
questions require you to construct either inferential or evaluative meaning.
LANGUAGE
Each Spelling test question presents four words, one of which may be misspelled, and a fifth
option, “No mistakes,” for use when all four words are spelled correctly. This format permits the
testing of four spelling words for each test question. Errors in the tested words are based on
common substitutions, reversals, omissions, or unnecessary additions.
The questions in the Capitalization test require you to identify errors—undercapitalization or
overcapitalization—presented in brief written contexts. If you find an error, mark the line of text
containing an error. If there is no error, choose the line that says “No mistakes.” Capitalization of
names and titles, dates and holidays, places, organizations and groups, and other words may be
tested.
In the Punctuation test, look for errors in both underpunctuation and overpunctuation. You
should identify the line of writing in which an error occurs, or you may mark the fourth response—
“No mistakes”—if no error is present. Questions may relate to the use of terminal punctuation,
commas, apostrophes, quotation marks, colons, and semicolons.
In the Usage test, questions contain one or two sentences that are arranged in three lines. You
must identify the line containing a usage error or select “No mistakes” if you believe no error is
present. Errors in the use of verbs, personal pronouns, modifiers, or in word choice are included.
In the Expression test, you should choose the best or most appropriate way of expressing an
idea in a sentence or paragraph. Choices involve issues of conciseness, clarity, appropriateness of
expression, and the organization of sentence and paragraph elements.
MATH
The Math test covers the broad skills of concepts, estimation, problem solving, and data
interpretation. It tests your math knowledge and ability to solve math problems using information
from stories, graphs, and tables. You are asked to estimate answers to math problems as well as
to compute answers.
ABILITY
This test assesses general abstract reasoning ability. The items present novel tasks to you and
offer an excellent appraisal of your ability to generalize a principle and apply it to a new situation.
27
Thus, the items appraise how well you use your general reasoning skills to solve problems you
have not been directly taught.
TIPS ON TAKING THE TEST
PREPARING FOR THE TEST
• Skills such as pacing and strategic answering can help you become a better test taker.
Pacing. Pacing yourself appropriately on timed tests can improve your chances of success.
Every student’s goal is to give correct answers to as many questions as possible within the
allotted time, but since there is rarely time for long deliberations, you may need to identify—
and temporarily set aside—questions that threaten to use up too much of your time.
Answering Strategically. For each question on the test, you should think about the answer
choices and decide which one would make the most sense. There may be some questions that
you will not know how to answer. Take a little time and try to answer these questions.
Begin by evaluating the answer choices provided. In many cases, you can reject one or more
answer choices as unlikely. Any remaining choices will, therefore, be the more probable
answers. You should look at these answer choices to find the one you think makes the most
sense. If none of the answers seems right, it is best to take an educated guess.
• Sample Test Questions: Be sure to answer the practice questions in this handbook in order
to understand the types of questions that will appear on the test.
BEFORE THE TEST
•
•
•
•
•
Make sure you get a full night’s sleep the night before the test.
Be sure to eat breakfast.
Know how far away your test site is and allow plenty of time to get there.
Bring your Admit Card and identification with you to the test site.
Bring several No. 2 pencils with erasers. Make sure the pencils are sharp and the erasers are
clean.
• Don’t bring any notes, books, or scratch paper with you.
• Don’t bring a calculator, watch, or any electronic devices with you. You won’t be allowed to
take any of these into the examination room.
DURING THE TEST
• During the reading of the directions, make sure to listen carefully.
• Make sure you understand the directions in the test booklet before starting the test.
• Try not to spend too much time on any one question. If you complete a subtest before the time
is up, go back to any question that you did not answer.
• Answer all questions that you can by looking for the answer choice that makes the most
sense.
• Mark only one answer for each question. If you need to erase an answer, make sure it is
completely erased before marking the new answer.
• If you have extra time, go back and check your answers. Make sure you have marked all
answers, that only one answer is filled in for each question, and that you have erased all stray
pencil marks.

Reading: Part 2
Directions
Read the passage below and then answer the questions.
Four answers are given for each question. You are to choose the
answer that you think is better than the others.
Chester Greenwood was just a teenager when he made his mark on the world
by inventing Greenwood’s Champion Ear Protectors. We know his invention
better by its less formal name—earmuffs.
Chester grew up in Maine, a state known for its bitter winters. As a youngster,
he suffered more than once from frostbitten ears. Wool scarves made his injured
ears itch, so he decided to make a covering of fur.
He cut out furry patches that would cover the ear and asked his grandmother
to sew them over wire frames. After experimenting with several designs, Chester
found a way to attach these furry pads to a springy metal band, which fit snugly
over the top of the head. Thus the earmuff was born.
In 1877, when Chester was nineteen, he patented his invention. Soon the
demand for Greenwood’s Champion Ear Protectors had become so great that a
factory was opened, and Chester’s hometown of Farmington became famous as
the earmuff capital of the world.

ten years since 1790, government leaders have tried to
count all the people living in the United States. 2This count is called
a census. 3In 1790, census takers tried to visit every household in
the country. 4In 1990, they just mailed forms to everyone. 5On
account of 95 percent of the population lived in rural areas, the
census takers had to ride horses or paddle boats to reach many
people. 6Eighteen months later, the final count was 3,929,326
people. 7Thomas Jefferson, who headed the 1790 census, knew that
some people probably were not located. 8He estimated the total
population to be closer to 4,100,000.

Ability
1 C
(All circles are divided into three equal sections.)
2 J
(Each shaded square has a smaller white square in the center.)
3 A
(All figures have four sides.)
4 K
(All figures have only horizontal stripes.)
5 B
(The first two figures are the same shape, but the second one is empty.)
6 L
(The large U-shape is to the small U-shape as the large T-shape is to the small T-shape.)

7 C
(A smaller black circle is added to the plain circle, so a smaller black square is added to
the plain square.)
8 K
(Both figures are cut in half. Then each half is turned over so that the outer edges of the
original figure touch each other.)
9 C
(Since the paper is folded in half, the hole is punched through two layers. That means
there will be two holes when the paper is unfolded. Since the paper is folded downward,
the second hole will be directly below the first hole. The hole is punched near the center,
so both holes must be near the center.)
10 N
(Two holes are punched through two layers, so there are four holes. The paper is folded
straight across, so the second pair of holes will be directly across from the first pair. The
holes are punched near the center, so all four holes will be near the center.)
11 D
(Since two holes are punched through two layers, there will be four holes. Since one
punch is near the center and the other is near a corner, two holes will be near the center
and two will be near corners. The paper is folded straight up, so one pair of holes will be
above the other pair.)
12 L
(Since the paper is folded in half twice, the hole is punched through four layers. That
means there are four holes. The hole is punched near a corner, so each of the four holes
will be near a corner.)
