Here we are almost half way through the year and it seems that we have just gotten started.
The ride's we have had so far have been well attended, but more are welcome, (they are
your Chapter Rides) we will ride in groups if necessary. The Officers are still planning
rides for the season, both weekend and dinner, so watch the schedule. You can plan a ride
and if you don't want to lead it then our Road Captain or one of his assistance will, as that
is part of there duties. This is your Chapter and we will try to keep you pleased with its
activities. The Membership continues to rise and so does our active participation. We
have our Picnic coming up and help will be needed as well at the Summer "Thang", our
Chapter does not ask a lot of our members nor does our Sponsoring Dealer, but these two
do.
Again, watch the calendar for rides and also check our Web Site.
I just returned from Ft. Wayne and except for the rain on Saturday morning and some
chilly temps, we had a good Rally. (About 30 from our Chapter attended). Hoping to see
many of you over the next few months and do not hesitate to call or e-mail with your
thoughts and concerns.

Don’t Forget to Sign-Up for Bowling for MDA
On Sunday, July 9, 2006 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm, Harley-Davidson of Indianapolis/
HOG Chapter #1 will bowl against Harley-Davidson Southside and Westside HOG
Chapters to see who can raise the most money for MDA. Southside and Westside
already have a large list of participants, so don’t delay. The sign-up sheet is on the
board…WE NEED YOU! The cost is only $3 per person. The bowl competition
will be held at All American Bowl, 726 N. Shortridge Road (behind the Kroger).

We hope this edition of our newsletter finds you and your family well. We are looking forward to our
Director’s Mystery Ride on July 8th at 10:30 am after our Chapter meeting and trust that many of you will
schedule to attend. Please mark your calendars for the Cycle Thang on July 29th and 30th. What is old is new
again. For several years my brother-in-law, Scott Rattermann, hosted Cycle Thang each year. A time of music,
food and fun. With a nod to his inspiration, we welcome back Cycle Thang. Cycle Thang 2006 will host music
by Black Voodoo and ESP and food by Dick’ Bodacious Barbecue on Saturday; and on Sunday a Bike Show
with four classes and Best of Show for $500, more music by Black Voodoo and ESP and wings from Hooter’s.

Meeting Called To Order
Introduction and Welcome To New Members/Guests
Old Business:
• Thanks to Russ once again for providing breakfast and for all who helped.
• Don’t forget to sign-in on the “sign-up sheet”, we will have a 50/50 drawing and be giving away some gifts
and certificates. Remember event coming up 7/22, “Paint Carmel Red” in association with AHA. Event
closes down Main Street in Carmel form 10am to 8pm. For more information call 317 582 0500.
Dealership:
Russ discussed moving forward with 2 main events this summer. “Symphony On The Prairie” and a “Two
Day Bike Fest”, to be held at the dealership on July 8th weekend. This event will include the band
“Voodoo” and also a picnic on the 8th.
• The response by members was favorable so Russ will continue to plan these events. Thanks Russ!
• A brickyard event was also discussed to be held after August meeting
•
New Business:
• Thanks to Sid Lewis for the outstanding job heading up the “Great River Road Ride” on May 27-29.
• Still lots of holes in the calendar this summer for rides, so if you would like to plan a ride see Bob Bill.
• New “Ladies of Harley” Activities Director was elected, Amy Brockelman, and the motion was seconded.
Thanks Amy.
• Ken White is heading up the “Catfish Caper Ride” on July 15-16, they will be leaving the dealership at 9am.

CHAPTER RIDE Indiana 19 - End to End Recap

After the June meeting, 30 Chapter members on 23 bikes rolled out the back of the dealership around the corner
and turned north up East Lakeshore Drive, right across 116th Street to Hazel Dell Parkway, and then north to 146th
Street and right over to Allisonville Road. A short journey to Noblesville, a Bob Bill shortcut, and a left on SR 32
got us to the real start of our destination that was the End (or start depending on how you look at it) of SR 19.
Heading north through Cicero, and Tipton to the outskirts of Kokomo was much more enjoyable than fighting the
traffic that we left in the city. After SR 19 “ends” at SR 35, we continued on the “Kokomo Bypass” to 400 N then
east to CR 1100 E and north up to SR 18 just before SR 19 starts again on the south side of Amboy. There was a
detour sign down the road, but not being able to see whether it was for SR 18 or SR 19, we made a left and headed
that direction. Unfortunately, the detour was for SR 19 about 1 ½ miles north in Amboy, so we performed our
typical parking lot drill in the intersection of SR 18 and SR 19 and headed back east while waving to a bunch of
bikers who seemed to be following us to where we had just turned from. However, we made a left, went two
miles north, turned west again and came out on SR 19 on the north side of Amboy and just north of the road construction.
From Amboy, it was a 20 mile trip to Peru where we stopped at a typical one-holer (they all seem to be one-holers
in Peru). We left Ken and Matt sitting at the gas station, since they had to return early to Indy, and we continued
up SR 19 through Tincup (although it is no longer marked), Chili, Gilead, and Akron (my old home town) to the
Egg Basket of the Midwest (Mentone) where SR 25 was blocked for the Annual Mentone Egg Festival. After
roaming the back streets, and an alley, we found parking for all of the bikes just a block west of Teal’s Restaurant.
We had to disappoint some of the guys as the pony rides would have to wait until after lunch since we had a 1:00
p.m. reservation. My parents, who live only 15 miles from Mentone in Warsaw, met us for lunch, and became
responsible for selection of the numbers for our Chapter free lunch drawing. Jim Bernhardt doesn’t know it, but
his number was the first selected. Unfortunately, he had just paid his bill and left since he was in a hurry to return
to Indy. Free lunches thus went to Steve & Debbie Young and Pam & Rick Lowe (who were told that their future
eligibility was in jeopardy as this is the second time that they have won).
Since the majority of the Chapter Members seemed to want to head back to Indy, the End of SR 19 came a bit
early on this trip. There also was not much happening at the local Egg Festival. We thus went west on SR 25 to
Rochester, took a local bypass on the eastside of the city and came out on SR 31 south of town. We stopped for
fuel near the Cass County Correctional Facility at Bunker Hill where signs along the highway warn you not to
pick up hitchhikers. Makes you wonder about their security. Our last stop of the day was at Kokomo H-D for another break and some shopping. After heading south, our fearless Director along with another Chapter member
pealed off at 216th Street, and the rest of the group started separating at SR 32 and then SR 431. The weather had
been good, and we enjoyed another fun and safe Chapter ride.
ABATE Experienced Rider Course ERC
Steve Hartshorne, HOG Chapter #1 Road Captain, put together this opportunity for HOG Chapter #1 Members with
ABATE. The class is now full and is scheduled for Sunday, June 25th. If you signed up and have any questions, please
contact Dawn at ABATE at 317-422-8474. Remember that Harley-Davidson encourages safety and Harley-Davidson of
Indianapolis will reimburse you the cost of the course, ($25 in the form of a gift certificate) for successfully completing an
accredited Motorcycle Safety Foundation rider training course.
Here are the class requirements:
° Valid motorcycle permit or motorcycle endorsement
° Provide your own motorcycle
° Show proof of insurance

GREAT RIVER RIDE RECAP

After our standard pre-ride Cracker Barrel breakfast and then Carolyn Jeffries showing off
her new and improved beaver (seat cover), we headed west at 9:15am on May 27th. The
route was I74 to Lizton, country roads and SR75 to North Salem, then west on SR236,
south on SR59 and a county road that started out more like a rutted alley before smoothing
out somewhat and ending in Rockville. (Unfortunately, Expedia only shows the fact that a
road exists but supplies no detail on the quality.) Stopping at Burger King, we met two more Chapter members, and increased the size of our group to
20 Chapter members and guests and 13 Harleys. We continued west on SR36 into Illinois, made a turn south on SR150, then after a stop in Paris,
headed southwest on SR16 through Kansas (Illinois) to Mattoon then south on SR45 to the Harley Barn in Effingham. Mike had to replace some parts
that had fallen off his bike, and the women shopped for clothing. There was a slight delay before leaving when Jerry found a puddle of oil under his
bike. It turned out that the “oil” was actually a rubber pad simulating oil that Rose had put under his bike as payback for a joke that he had played on
her. After picking up the “spill” and stopping for lunch, we headed west on I70 for about 50 miles, then were happy to ride state roads again to avoid
all of the semi truck traffic. After following my planned route including residential streets, but not being 100% sure that we were on the route at all
times due to several name changes of the street, we arrived at the Lewis and Clark State Memorial Park and got our first view of the Mississippi River.
This was at the point where the Missouri River flows into it. After a short stop and several pictures, and after around eight hours on and off the road in
temperatures in the low 90’s, we made the fifteen-minute trip from the Memorial to the hotel. We checked into the Holiday Inn, and then not wanting
to get back on the bikes took a shuttle to the Argosy Casino for a buffet dinner. This site afforded us a view of the Clark Bridge as well as the Mississippi River. Ed was easily able to afford Carolyn’s and his dinners after sliding into the slot machine next to Jim and Dee and on one pull walking
away with a multi meal earnings. Jim was more than a little jealous since Ed often seems to have this kind of luck and he doesn’t.
Day 2 started with a complimentary breakfast buffet at the hotel, and then it was off to the Great River Road. The early start afforded us a cool and
beautiful ride immediately adjacent to the Mississippi for the first 25 miles. Cliffs on the east towered over the road and created the morning shade.
After passing through Grafton, we were now riding along the east side of the Illinois River since it enters the Mississippi just north of Grafton. We
crossed the Illinois River at Hardin and rode along the west side of the river until reaching Kampsville where a left turn on SR96 took us west toward
and then north along the Mississippi again. The road soon turns inland somewhat where you begin to see more of the Illinois countryside. After a turn
on SR57, we eventually cruised through Quincy catching another glimpse of the river and a neat bridge. We were soon back on SR96 away from the
Mississippi and viewing the Illinois cornfields. It was beginning to warm up and everyone was starting to get hungry again. The 30 miles to Warsaw
(IL) seemed to take forever. We stopped for fuel, and tried to find a local restaurant but there wasn’t anything that was recommended. We headed
north stopping to check out Hamilton but the sidewalks were rolled up. Fortunately, it was only another fifteen shady and scenic miles along the Mississippi to the river town of Nauvoo. We found a very popular hotel restaurant buffet that was recommended by an older couple after we made a quick
detour through the historic settlement. The old man also offered a handshake and the statement to be a good leader to the rest of the group that was
behind me. After lunch, some of us walked around Nauvoo taking pictures or shopping even though only a few stores were open on this Sunday holiday weekend. The rest of the group lounged in the shade next to the restaurant and hotel. Rick’s airhorn again signaled that shopping time was over
and that we were “burning daylight”. Leaving Nauvoo, the Great River Road again turns inland, and eventually Yvonne was chirping in my ear
“where the hell is the river” as she was quickly tired of seeing cornfields again. Thus, at Dallas City, we made a left down their main street and within
a few blocks found the Mississippi again. After about a mile of city streets immediately adjacent to the river, and interrupting someone’s picnic at a
local park as we rode by, we were soon back out on SR96 and about a mile away from the river. After a stop at rare Sinclair gas station for Ed to remove some sunscreen from his eyes, it was again time for Rick’s airhorn as he had seen enough of the river and was ready to get to the hotel for a dip
in the pool. Do you begin to see the picture of how difficult it is to keep everyone happy when you travel with a large group (e.g.; not enough river vs.
too much river)? Anyone want to be Activities Coordinator next year? It was late afternoon and 95 degrees, so after 10 miles on Carman Road, a
right on SR34 and the 50 mile windy trip to Galesburg, we were almost “home” for Day 2 when two police officers motioned us off to the side of the
road (to avoid a spot where the concrete had buckled across the two northbound lanes). This would have made for a nice launching ramp if you were
interested in performing an airborne maneuver. Fortunately, the shoulder of the road wasn’t buckled and we were soon at the Galesburg Holiday Inn
Express after riding through the city. We checked into the hotel; Rick & Pam got their swim in the pool along with Jim & Dee, and one of us took the
time to wash his bike and to make dinner reservations. Dinner was downtown at The Packinghouse that isn’t hard to figure out used to be an old packing plant. The main dining room was a large walk-in cooler, and the old freight elevator is now the coat room. After a hearty dinner, we took the time
outside to take pictures, and for Carolyn Jeffries to do some street walking and to solicit the local traffic by opening her shirt and exposing her breasts
(painted on a T-shirt to resemble a well endowed shirtless female). Pictures are available for a small fee by request only. Do you get the idea that
what happens on a Chapter ride rarely stays only on a Chapter ride?
Day 3 started with the hotel continental breakfast, and a fuel stop before the last 250 miles of our journey that in total turned out to be around 800
miles. The trip back on I74 was uneventful, and after crossing the Indiana State Line some of our riders starting taking the short way to their homes.
A dozen of us stopped in Brownsburg for lunch before heading for I465 and in different
directions to home. Overall, for me at least, it was fun trip to a new destination with
some good friends and also Rose, and several new Chapter Members that we were able to
get to know much better. (It seems that I often have to remind Rose who the boss is.)
