Why Finland is the hottest
spot in Europe for health and
wellness innovation?
Photo: Paula Myöhänen
Finland is flexible, innovative and cooler than you think. Within Europe we
have a very promising future for R&D and business in health and wellbeing
sector. The Finnish innovation system is internationally recognized as one of
the world’s most developed ecosystems. That’s a pretty good starting point.
However this is not enough for us in Finland. We have set a clear goal in our
National Health Sector Growth Strategy - we want to become a leader and a
pioneer in everything that has to do with research, innovation, investments
and business in the field of health and well-being. Both public and the
private sector have committed strongly for the cause.
The most recent statistics show that healthtech has become the largest hitech sector in the sophisticated Finnish market. We are an ideal location
for genomics research and development. We are strongly on our way to
become the hotspot of healthIT and personalized-medicine in the world
largest single market - Europe and the European Union. This would be
a good addition to the world class sectors like life-science, ICT, let alone
biobanks and mobile games that Finland is already so well known for.
We want to make Finland the best possible environment for companies to succeed
We offer an easy operating environment for businesses, minimal bureaucracy and stable as well as competitive economy.
For example the World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Report in 2014-2015 has ranked Finland as the fourth most
competitive nation in the world. The strengths of Finland are innovation and higher education and training - both areas where
Finland ranked number one in the study.
Finns love statistics and rankings. Maybe because we do so well in them. Nordic Growth Entrepreneurship Review in 2012 pointed
out that Finnish environment for entrepreneurship is the best out of Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Denmark - a very competitive
market as a whole. Within the European Union Finland has been recognized as an innovation leader by the Innovation Union
Scoreboard 2013.
Add the fact that our educational system constantly ranks on top ranks in the PISA test that measures the level of primary
education and that Finland is the best country to be a mother - we remain friends of numbers.
I wish sincerely that your cooperation will be mutually beneficial and profitable. I wish you all the best!

Emotion Tracker
Know yourself and you will win all battles
Sun Tzu 500 B.C.
Do we know ourselves in today’s hectic life?
”How can we be innovative and creative if we don’t even have time to
figure out what we are thinking or feeling?” We have trackers for sports,
food and sleep, but why was there no serious tracker for the most
important part of our being: the Mind?
Emotion Tracker is an easy-to-use mobile tool that helps you
identify and analyse your true emotions. It has been created
with sincere passion to help individuals to know themself
better, so they can start creating health and happiness inside
and around themselves. We believe that healthy, happy
individuals create prosperous organisations and – ultimately
– a prosperous society.
Emotion Tracker 1.0 was launched in B2B sector in Finland
January 2014. It is currently offered through selected health
care professionals and organizations. The first results have
been encouraging as Aalto University teacher and psychologist
Eerikki Mäki wrote:
“Students used Emotion Tracker for identification of their
emotions in spring 2014. Most of the students had awesome
insights about the role of the emotions in their thinking and
actions”
Company was founded 2013 by four experienced professionals
from management consulting, psychology and start-
up
background. First angel investors were invited on board in May
2014.
The passion and the vision of the company is to quantify
the emotional data of the world: first to individuals, then to
organisations and finally to society as a whole.

The next big transformation is about to happen in Healthcare. The existing technologies:

MediSapiens
Founded in 2009, the company focuses on the fields of bioinformatics,
genetics, software development or graphics design.
The common problem in the area is how to store and make
sense out of data. The situation is especially challenging
in personalized medicine and cancer genetics – areas of
MediSapiens’ core expertise – where multiple currently noncomparable datasets, multiple platforms, study designs and
medical nomenclatures are used, making it impossible to
integrate the data produced by the global research community
and making conclusions on medical significance. Whether you
are a physician treating a cancer patient, or a researcher in the
industry trying to find a predictive biomarker for a new drug,
you are faced with the same problem: how can I conclude
anything from the present scattered evidence? Developing
means to answer these fundamental questions are the very
essence of MediSapiens.

from this program, aimed particularly for increasing sales
and marketing efforts and building a wider global customer
base. Medisapiens has been invited to participate in EU

another strong public support for the company. Overall, one
can already state that Medisapiens has become a prominent

successful bioinformatics company in Finland, and the only
one that has been active in the genomics and personalized

Auria Biobank
an innovation platform
For nearly a hundred years, public health care in Finland has collected millions
of human tissue samples that can be linked to data from the hospital’s patient
records or the government’s population register system. This combination of
samples and data creates a unique national asset for Finland that should be
utilized.
Auria Biobank is the first hospital-integrated biobank established
in Finland by University of Turku and the hospital districts of
Southwest Finland, Satakunta and Vaasa and accredited under
Finnish biobank legistlation on 2013. It represents a globally
unique concept, in which population-based diagnostic tissue
samples will be connected with clinically relevant information
including treatment modalities and follow up, with a focus
on providing a research and innovation platform for both
academic investigators and pharma/biotech companies.
Currently, Auria Biobank holds over 800 000 human samples with
information from hospital and certain national health registries
in a decoded fashion to protect the identity of the sample
donors. The unique aspect of Auria is the implementation of
the so-called “capture all-comers” approach, an ambitious and
innovative plan to collect an extra biobank specimen at each
incident patient visit. The number of annual patient visits in
the catchment area being approximately 300,000, the biobank
is expected to grow rapidly. Sample collections on repeat visits
will be ascertained on a discretionary basis.
Our offering and interests
•
•
•
The aim is to cover the operations of the biobank
through its own profits, such as usage fees and publicprivate partnerships. In such a case, private partners will
include e.g. representatives from the biotechnology and
pharmaceutical industry that can develop new medical
innovations with collaboration of Auria Biobank.
Biobanks create common benefits for Finnish social,
health and innovation policy. Samples storage in the Auria
Biobank will be used for the development of products
and services that promote public as well as personalized
health.
In Auria Biobank, the interests of the researcher, the
research subject and society are equal. In addition to
the creation of new business, Finnish well-being is
based on the development of new innovations and their
implementation.

institute. We influence work that promotes the health and welfare of people in
Finland by providing extensive and high-level expert knowledge for use in the

data services
The National Institute for Health and Welfare supports the
national reform of the electronic patient data system in social
welfare and health care. Development work of hospital districts,
health centres, private health service providers as well as of
pharmacies and social services are steered towards changes
that enable successful implementation of the National Archive
of Health Information (Kanta) as well as a reform of the social
welfare information systems.
The Kanta Services include the electronic prescription, the
Patient Data Repository, My Kanta (for viewing one’s own
information) and the Data Management Service (a part of
the Patient Data Repository; allows citizens to control access
to their personal information and communicate wishes about
their medical treatment and gives health care professionals
access to key information about patients).

3D-4C (3D Motion Analysis For Customers) is an ongoing
commercialization project, funded by TEKES - The Finnish
Funding Agency for Innovation. The project aims at investigating
and preparing the possible commercialization of a new
biomechanical running analysis service based on a 3D-motion

limited analysis of movements of the runner, as it also utilizes
joint loading data. In order to reach the overall project goal,
a prototype model of the customer service process, including
market needs and demands, as well as software components
for generating customer feedback reports will be developed.
The method can be applied for the analysis of running
biomechanics in sports coaching, coach education, running
