TISHREI - CHESHVAN 5776
MASADA
At the edge of the Judean
Desert, on a rocky plateau
overlooking the Dead Sea,
lies the excavated ruin of
a royal citadel. It was the
last stronghold held by the
Jewish Zealots who refused to
submit to Roman occupation.
When they could hold out no
longer, Masada became the
backdrop for one of the most
dramatic scenes in Jewish
history.

NOVEMBER 2015
CHESHVAN - KISLEV 5776
DEAD SEA
In one terrifying moment, an
act of G-d turned an oasis into
infertile wasteland. Unique
geological conditions then
combined to form the Dead
Sea, a sea that is more than
eight times as salty as the
oceans.
Over the years, the silent
desert around this sea
became a refuge for spiritual
escapists. Now, the Dead
Sea is once again a top
destination for those seeking
healing and peace of mind.

KISLEV - TEVET 5776
JORDAN RIVER
The Jordan River is a major
water source that flows
through the Jordan Rift Valley
into the Dead Sea. For Israel,
the water of the Jordan River
is an absolute neccessity
for drinking water and for
irrigation.
In the Torah, the Jordan River
is mentioned several times as
a source of fertility for Israel.
It is here that Joshua and the
tribes of Israel miraculously
crossed into Jericho, and also
the scene of many biblical
battles.

TEVET - SHEVAT 5776
RACHEL'S TOMB
For centuries, it lay on a
deserted roadside, and
Rachel's descendents come
here to pour out their hearts
to her - the mother who
dwells in a lonely wayside
grave in order to be there for
her suffering children. Rachel
is a continuous source of
comfort to her children—
praying for her children and
eliciting the divine promise
of her children's return to
their Promised Land.

EIN GEDI
Ein Gedi is an oasis on the
western shore of the Dead
Sea, the lowest point on
earth, some 400 meters
below sea level.
During the biblical
period, Ein Gedi and the
surrounding desert, known
as the Wilderness of Ein
Gedi, were part of the
territory of the Tribe of
Judah. David sought refuge
from King Saul at Ein Gedi.

CAVE OF MACHPELAH
One of the most famous
pieces of real estate on earth
is the Cave of Machpelah (also
known as the "Cave of the
Patriarchs") in the southern
Israeli city of Hebron.
Machpelah means "doubled"
in Hebrew. One reason
given is that four prestigious
couples are buried there:
Adam and Eve, Abraham and
Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, and
Jacob and Leah.

CAESAREA AQUEDUCT
The old city Caesarea required
a steady flow of running
water. Initially its waters
came from the local wells.
However, as the population
grew to several hundred
thousand people, a large
scale aqueduct was required
to bring the water from a
distance. The aqueduct
was built in several phases,
starting from King Herod.

KOTEL, WESTERN WALL
The Western Wall, or Kotel,
in the Old City of Jerusalem
has figured prominently in
the Jewish consciousness
for centuries. Generations
dreamed of appearing before
the old stone wall, even just
once.
Today, the Wall is active
24 hours a day, 365 days a
year. The cracks between
the rectangular stones are
crammed with paper.

SIVAN - TAMMUZ 5776
THE SECOND TEMPLE
The Holy Temple in Jerusalem
was built by King Solomon in
the year 2928 from creation (833
BCE), and was destroyed 410
years later, on the ninth day of
the month of Av, by the armies
of the Babylonian emperor
Nebuchadnezzar.
Seventy years later it was rebuilt;
the second Temple stood for 420
years, until its destruction by the
Romans, also on the ninth of Av,
in 3829 (69 CE).
Ever since, the 9th of Av has
been a day of fasting and
repentance—a day on which we
mourn the destruction, and pray
for the coming of Moshiach,
when the third and final Temple
will be restored to its place
as the divine epicenter of the
universe.

MONTEFIORE WINDMILL
The Montefiore Windmill
is a landmark windmill in
Jerusalem, Israel. Built in
the Mishkenot Sha'ananim
neighborhood in 1857, it was
designed as a flour mill.
The windmill serves as a
small museum honored
and dedicated to the
achievements of British
Jewish banker and
philanthropist Moses
Montefiore. It was restored in
2012 with a new cap and sails
in the style of the originals.
The mill can turn in the wind.

SEPTEMBER 2016
MENACHEM AV - ELUL 5776
TIBERIAS
The northern Israeli city of
Tiberias, one of the four holy
cities in Israel, was built along
the shore of the Kinneret (Sea
of Galilee), near seventeen
natural hot springs, it is known
as the "City of Water."
Some 2,000 years ago, Tiberias
was the center of Jewish
study and the last seat of the
Sanhedrin (Supreme Court of
Jewish law). After enduring
constant wars throughout
the Middle Ages, the city
was revived by an influx of
kabbalists in the eighteenth
and nineteenth centuries. The
city's major attractions are
the Kinneret, its natural hot
springs and the graves of many
historical luminaries.
