DEAR FRIENDS!
S
ince my last letter to you, I found myself thinking that we have
entered the season of “last times,”… such as this is the last time I will serve a
World Communion at Heritage Presbyterian Church. Or, when we welcomed
Rebecca Berman into our church family through the sacrament of baptism, I
thought, “This will likely be the last baptism.” There is a touch of sadness in
the autumn air as we begin to say our goodbyes.
However, with the touch of sadness there is a wave of love, joy and
thanksgiving embracing my heart with memories of countless ways God’s
Spirit has woven our lives together through acts of worshipping, serving,
fellowshipping, learning, sharing and being together in the presence of God.
November is the season of Thanksgiving, and we have much for which
to be thankful. Even the challenges and difficulties that we encounter are filled
with opportunities to strengthen our faith, to spark our imagination, and to
expand our ability to love and to forgive.
I am thankful for the opportunity God has given us to be in relationship
with one another in a community of faith made possible through the gift we
have been given in Jesus Christ.
Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!!
With love,
Jim

ADULT ED
“CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD!”
Understanding the Psalms
Led by Rev. Jim Smucker, November 7-December 12, 9:45 a.m., in Heritage Hall
One of the most important books of the Bible, and indeed, of the whole world
of literature is the collection known as the “Psalter.” It has been called a
“treasury of prayer, praise, and adoration, a Bible in miniature.” Its 150 songs
(the word “psalm,” derived from a Greek word meaning “song, accompanied
by a string instrument”) were composed over 500 years of Israel’s life, were
used in worship by Jesus and the Early Church, and have played a key role in
the spiritual life of all major branches of Christendom. John Calvin once
called the book “the mirror of the soul,” for in its poems of faith, despair,
hope, anger, joy, grief, and thanksgiving we have a multi-faceted reflection of
human experience in response to the Divine.
In these six sessions we shall study the origins, growth, and authorship,
and importance of the Book of Psalms through the history of Christianity.
Then, turning attention to the major types, we shall consider the message
found in storytelling psalms, laments, songs of thanksgiving, festival
songs and liturgies, and hymns of praise. In that these poems spring from
actual encounter with the living God, so may their study lead anew to such
experiences!

THANK YOU!
T
his corner sends “A BIG THANK YOU” to the people who make a
difference in our church. It also may draw your attention
to an area of the church that you may want to visit to see what is being done to
improve the church. Then give the people involved a personal “Thank You.”
“Thank You” to congregation members for their attendance and support
of the Annual Lorain Cooperative Ministry Pasta Dinner, and a special BIG
“Thank You” to the people who helped that night.
Also “Thank You” to Bruce Burge, Sue Giancaterino and Jim Smucker
for supplying the October bulletin covers.
We would like to have one or more entries for the “Thank You” Corner
each month so put a bug in my ear or contact the church office if you know of
some group or someone to whom we should be saying “Thank you.”
