President’s Report
Moreover, Mazda Canada came on board
in 2011 to support our high performance
athletes in the Team Ontario program. These
sponsors are integral to the success of the
GAO and make it possible for us to continue
to grow the sport of golf in the future.
kathy pilkey
2011 Golf Association of ontario president
The honour of serving as the 10th President
of the Golf Association of Ontario is one that
will stay with me for a lifetime.
2011 was an outstanding year for the
Golf Association of Ontario. I have had
the opportunity to travel throughout the
entire province and see our programs
and initiatives in action. The GAO should
continue to be proud of its leadership and
commitment to growing our sport, from the
grass root level up to and including our high
performance development programs.
We celebrated the 10th anniversary of
the amalgamated Ontario Ladies’ Golf
Association and the Ontario Golf Association
with the unveiling of our new logo and
brand platform. Our goal is to continue to
improve our communication with not only
our member clubs and member golfers, but
also with our fellow provincial associations
and of course our national governing
body, Golf Canada. Our ultimate goal is to
demonstrate the value of membership to all
of the golfers in our great province.
The Golf Association of Ontario continues
to succeed with the support of our
corporate sponsors and partners, which
enable us to make a significant impact
in the community and deliver top quality
programming. Investors Group continues
to be an outstanding partner of the GAO.
Since 2003, they have supported all of our
major provincial championships, our Hall
of Fame ceremony and our scholarship
program. Our other valued partners include
Baka Mobile, Intercontinental Hotel Group,
Bushnell, Titleist, RBC Insurance, and Second
Skin. Callaway Golf Canada has continued
to support our Golf For Kids program, which
has grown from 200 schools in 2009 to
participation just short of 550 schools in 2011.
YEARBOOK 2011
6
The Province of Ontario continues to
support our programming initiatives and
long term player development. The Ontario
Trillium Foundation enabled us to expand
our Callaway Golf for Kids program, while
the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport
provided support to the GAO to host the first
ever Ontario Golf Coaches Summit. This was
a world-class event in April of 2011 that was
full of opportunities and resources for PGA
of Canada professionals to expand their
role in coaching. With the Canada Summer
Games, Pan-Am Games and the 2016
Olympics on the horizon, the Summit assisted
these coaches in providing the highest level
of coaching for Ontario athletes.
The Ontario Golf of Hall of Fame induction
ceremony was another success in 2011, as
the Hall continues to perpetuate the memory
and acknowledge of the contributions and
accomplishments made by Ontarians to the
game of golf. Congratulations to this year’s
inductees, Mississaugua’s Gar Hamilton and
Sam Young from Shelburne. There are now
a total of 58 members in our Hall of Fame.
Another highlight in 2011 was the 10th
Anniversary Fundraising Gala in support of
the Callaway Golf for Kids program. We
were thrilled to have World Golf Hall of Fame
member Annika Sorenstam as our guest
speaker along with the ANNIKA Academy
as our presenting sponsor. The evening
was a fantastic celebration and with the
support of our sponsors, donors and over
200 guests, we raised more than $40,000 for
the Callaway Golf for Kids program, money
that will go directly to introducing children in
Ontario to the game of golf.
Our GAO athletes had an outstanding
year on the national stage. The Ontario
women won the Canadian Senior Ladies’
inter-provincial team championship and
our Ontario Women’s Amateur team
were edged out of a victory by one shot.
On the men’s side, our athletes brought
home both the Amateur and Mid-Amateur
inter-provincial team championships titles.
Individually, Mary Ann Hayward successfully
defended the Canadian Senior Ladies’
Championship in 2011. Ontario had a 1-23 finish at the Canadian Men’s Amateur,
led by Mackenzie Hughes, Albin Choi &
Jacob Patte. Rebecca Lee Bentham was
the Royale Cup Canadian Ladies’ Amateur
champion and continued her run in the
Fall, becoming one of two Canadians to
earn a 2012 LPGA Tour Card. In the Golf
Canada National Order of Merit rankings,
seven of our Ontario men and five of our
Ontario women are ranked in the top 10 in
their respective rankings. All of this success
is a testament to the strength of the player
development programs in this province.
Our volunteers continue to the lifeblood
of the GAO. With their hard work and
dedication, we ran a very successful
schedule of provincial events, including
qualifiers, championships, District events
and Member Days. Our passionate
volunteers lent their expertise to committee
work, handicapping, course rating, and
tournament support. Our volunteers’
knowledge and expertise enable us to run
world-class events and services all season
long.
Lastly, the generosity of our member
clubs is appreciated in sharing their
beautiful courses to contest all of our events
and provide a venue for our athletes to
showcase their talents.
I encourage you to peruse this Yearbook
and familiarize yourself with the work
of our different committees. We have
implemented a new volunteer process
and would like to encourage you to “Get
to Know the GAO” by volunteering. Please
visit www.gao.ca to complete a volunteer
application.
In closing, this year provided me with
a unique opportunity to represent our
association and I did so with pride thanks to
the Golf Association of Ontario team. Thank
you to the staff, the Board of Directors and
all of our volunteers. Each and every one
of you are helping the GAO to grow the
sport that we all love and are so passionate
about.
In getting ready to pass the gavel to Ian
Murray, the GAO team will continue to
prosper, and be one of the most successful
Provincial Sport Organizations in not only
Canada, but North America.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
This was an experience I will put in my
memory bank for life.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathy Pilkey

Handicap Certification
Each member club must have a Handicap Committee whose members should
have attended a Handicap Certification Seminar. We conducted four Handicap
Certification seminars allowing 131 members from 46 clubs to become certified
Handicap Officials. To date, a total of 1380 members from 357 different golf clubs
have been certified through this process. In addition to these Handicap Seminars,
we also held four individual club speaking engagements for over 200 members.
The goal of these sessions was to help reinforce messaging from the host clubs
Handicap Committee and help educate the membership on some of the finer
points of the Handicap System.
To date, 436 member clubs have signed and returned the RCGA Handicap
License Agreement (HLA). The HLA helps to ensure compliance with the RCGA
Handicap System and enables clubs to issue valid RCGA Handicap Factors to
their members. Most GAO member clubs (319) are using the RCGA Network
(Handicap program) to maintain Handicap Factors for their club.
Course Ratings
During the 2011 golf season, 48 clubs were rated for both men and woman (this
includes, 9, 18 and 27 plus hole courses).
The GAO measurement program is still active, there were another 73 courses
measured in 2011.

District Coordinators Committee Report
In Spring 2011, the District Coordinators Committee participated in a Strategic
Planning Session that identified the successes and challenges districts experience.
The one consistent challenge that all 14 districts are experiencing is obtaining
adequate volunteer resources to support the growing participation at the District
level.
Each District appoints a Volunteer Executive that is committed to building a
strong healthy golfing community. 2011 saw over 3500 golfers enjoying tournaments, adult learn to play programs and rules workshops. The Intersectional
Matches Competition continues to grow with plans in place for Peterborough
District to offer them next season. The Adult Training Programs, a friendly training
experience for the higher to mid-range handicap golfer, expanded with ten sessions being offered across the province in 2011.
All this was made possible with the support of our members, clubs and very dedicated district volunteers.
The Committee encourages you to… Get to know the GAO… Volunteer!
Respectfully submitted,
The District Coordinators Committee

Rules and Competition
2011 Rules & Competitions Report
Despite a season that started slowly due to many cold and rainy
days, the 2011 GAO Tournament program had another successful
year. Thanks to the dedication and commitment of the GAO
Tournament Volunteers and the GAO member clubs that hosted
our championships, qualifying rounds and Member Days, the
number of entries into GAO events continued to grow.
The difficult weather conditions provided some challenges for
players and courses, but the GAO volunteers and the host club
staff managed to conduct all the qualifying rounds with success.
New to the scene on the GAO schedule in 2011 was the Ontario
Juvenile Championship involving boys and girls under the age
of 17. Over 250 boys and 40 girls attempted to qualify for the
championship at Loyalist Country Club in Bath, Ontario. In
previous years, the Juvenile Championship was played as part
of the Ontario Junior Boys’ and Junior Girls’ Championships. In
2012, the Juvenile titles will be awarded to the boys and girls gold
medal winners at the Ontario Summer Games in Toronto. The Golf
portion of the Games will be played at the Cedar Brae Golf &
Country Club.
The GAO Member Days were held for the second year with
some growth in the number of events and the number of players.
Designed to provide all GAO members the opportunity to
compete in GAO-conducted tournaments, the Member Days are
fun and friendly one-day events held at some of the top courses
in the province. This year’s events were held at Scarboro G&CC,
Ladies’ Golf Club of Toronto, Georgian Bay Club, Wooden Sticks
GC, Glendale G&CC, Eagles Nest GC, The Club at Bond Head
and National Pines GC.
As always, the GAO Tournament Program wouldn’t happen
without the support of the fantastic work of the GAO Tournament
Volunteers. This group of knowledgeable individuals contributes
thousands of hours to the extensive tournament program. This
year, the GAO conducted 30 championship events and more
than 60 qualifying rounds, in addition to the GAO Member Day
events.
championships and qualifiers in 2011. Hosting the multi-day GAO
Championships this past year were Wooden Sticks, Lake Joseph,
Weston, Hawk Ridge, Wildfire, Grey Silo, Cutten Fields, Goderich
Sunset, Brampton, Bay of Quinte, Puslinch Lake, North Bay, Loyalist
(twice) and especially Thornhill for stepping up at the last minute
to host the Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.
Without the generous support of our sponsors,
our championships wouldn’t be the same.
Investors Group continued to be a leader
in amateur sport sponsorship. They were
the title sponsor of the Men’s and Women’s
Amateur, Senior and Mid-Amateur as well as
the three major Junior Championships. Baka
Mobile continued to support the Public Player
Championship in 2011.
On the Rules side, the GAO fully delivered its new Level 3 and
Level 4 on-line education programs, which have resulted in
improved pass rates for the participants in these programs. The
GAO is especially appreciative of the work of the Rules SubCommittee of John Turner, Lee Griffin and Jim Furlong for their
work in developing and delivering these programs.
In addition to conducting our GAO Tournament Program, we
have developed a relationship with the OUA and OCAA to assist
in delivering the University and Colleges Golf Championship. With
a majority of the players in those events already competitors in
GAO championships, this relationship seems a natural extension of
our role in golf in Ontario.
I would like to thank the members of the GAO Rules &
Competitions Committee for their input and support throughout
the year. I would also like to extent my appreciation to the GAO
Tournament Staff (Dave Colling, Director of Rules & Competitions,
Larry Longo, Tournament Manager, Sandy Davidson, Coordinator
of Volunteers and Evan LaRocque and James Dorion, Interns) for
their dedication and hard work all season long.

Thanks must be expressed to all the member clubs that hosted

YEARBOOK 2011 17
Sport Development
It was an exciting year for the GAO and its on-going focus to make the
sport more accessible and community centric as we inch closer to the
2015 Pan American and 2016 Olympic Games.
2011 was again highlighted by outstanding performances by Ontario’s top
athletes including three individual National Championships: Mackenzie
Hughes – Men’s Amateur, Rebecca Lee-Bentham – Women’s Amateur
and Mary Ann Hayward – Senior Women. GAO Provincial Teams also
captured 3 of 7 team titles: Men’s Mid-Am, Men’s Am and Senior Women.
Ontario also finished well in International Championships including: 14
year old Brooke Henderson – Round of 32 in the USGA Women’s Am ,
Richard Jung – Round of 16 in the USGA Men’s Am, Stefani Markovich
- Round of 32 in the USGA Women’s Mid-Am, Rebecca-Lee Bentham –
Round of 16 in the British Ladies’ Am, Samantha Spencer and Meghan
McDougall both made it to the Round of 16 at the Western Junior Girls
Championship, Chris Hemmerich finished 6th in the Hudson Junior, Garrett
Rank finished 6th in the Porter Cup and Mackenzie Hughes made it to the
Round of 16 in the Western Amateur.
The continued success of our athletes and programs is a testament to
the focus and dedication that the GAO takes with its sport development
programs. We thank Mike, Mallory, Mary Ann, Jon and Jeff.
National Golf in Schools & Callaway Golf For Kids
Golf in elementary schools across Ontario continued to grow at a rapid
pace including 250 new schools registering in the National Golf in Schools
program.
As part of the Callaway Golf for Kids, the Mr. Knickers and Friends program
reached over 12,000 students while over 100 youth benefited from Future
Champions Clinics. All of which was made possible through the Trillium
Foundation and regional support including: Durham College, Richmond
Hill Toyota, Flagstick Magazine, Wildfire GC, Palladino Honda, Windsor
District Junior Golf Academy, Bruce’s Golf Rewards and Mix 97 in Belleville.
CN Future Links
2011 was another successful year, as the GAO continues to support CN
Future Links and its family of programs.
Contested in late August, the GAO held the GDC Provincial Skills Challenge
at BraeBen Golf Club in Mississauga and the winners included: Lauren
Callahan & Justin DiCienzo – 11 & under, Sarah Geurten & Paul Koubridis –
12-14, and Jaylene Holmes-Tang, Olivia Brock and Cory Huysmans – 15-18.
Also, the CN Future Links Mobile Van Program had a seventh straight
successful season, reaching 7432 children over a five-month span.
Junior Golf Development Centres
The GAO’s new Junior Golf Development Centre pilot initiative was a
huge success in year one. Over 15 member clubs from across Ontario
took part in providing full service programming for youth and their families
from recreation to competitive coaching. The Pilot reached over a dozen
communities in the Province including Windsor, Thunder Bay, Ottawa
and Muskoka and involved over 20 PGA of Canada trained coaches.
COACH DEVELOPMENT & SUPPORT
The GAO has taken the lead in supporting Ontario golf coaches in
partnership with the Ministry and CPGA zones in Ontario. Coaching is an
incredibly important piece to athlete development and they are critical
to the success of GAO programming at all levels. The coach development
program includes: Ontario Golf Coaching Summit – April 11-13th 2011 in
Niagara Falls, Ontario, Golf Coaches website www.coaching.gao.ca,
and joining coaches as member of the GAO.
YEARBOOK 2011 18
Inaugural Ontario Golf Coaches Summit
The first junior development Coaches Summit was held on April 11-13th
at the White Oaks Resort in Niagara Falls Ontario. The event was a huge
success and featured Keynote speakers and presenters including; Rick
Jensen, Dr. Greg Wells, Dr. Penny Werthner, Chris Welch, Rudy Duran
and Fred Shoemaker.
As part of the Summit, the GAO hosted the first Annual Ontario Golf
Coach Awards Banquet to recognize and celebrate Ontario’s leaders
in junior development and coaching.
And the winners are……
Participation Coach of the Year: Brian Gallant , Carrie Vaughan
Development Coach of the Year: Laird White, Carla Munch Miranda
Facility of the Year: Shelburne Golf and Country Club
Long Term Player Development Plan
The GAO and the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport completed
a Long Term Player Development Audit and Implementation Plan in
an effort to align and enhance program offerings to Ontario families.
As part of the Implementation phase, a number of key action items
will be executed beginning in 2012 from training and coaching to
competition and communication.
Team Ontario Development Program
The GAO has implemented several new initiatives for the 2012 golf
season to further advance the development of high performance
athletes in the province. 2012 will see advancements in both our Under
19 and U17 Team Ontario programs. Both groups attended a 3 day
kick off camp at the Rock GC and Clevelands House in Muskoka
in late September of 2011. The U17 athletes will attend a five day
training camp in Puerto Rico January 2-8, 2012. The Lodge at Ventana
Canyon in Tucson, Arizona will host U19 Team Ontario once again for
two training camps during the 2012 winter season. Both groups will
converge for a final 3 day camp at the end of April at the Cherry Hill
Club in the Niagra area. The GAO is very pleased to have the Granite
Golf Club in Stouffville, ON as the official Team Ontario Training Center.
Having a venue where our athletes can train and play together during
the season will be an invaluable developmental tool for the athletes in
our programs.
U19 selections:
Boys – Nicholas Crozier, Jeffrey Gardner, Taewon Kim.
Girls – Meghan Bennett, Grace Chung, Sophie Kitchen, Meghan
McDougall.
U17 selections:
Boys – Owen Bates, Tony Gil, Osama Khan, Gavin McQueenie, Carter
Simon, Conner Watt. Girls – Madison Easterbrook, Annika Haynes, Sonia
Nagindas, Zaafina Naqvi and Courtney Tolton.
Integrated Support Team:

Scholarship report
marketing and membership
With the support of its generous partners and
sponsors, the GAO awarded $38,000 to 12 deserving
student golfers in the province of Ontario. This year,
recipients received awards between $1,000 and
$4,000 to assist with their continued education at the
post secondary level. All recipients have maintained
at least a 75% academic average, are enrolled in a
post secondary institution, are members of the GAO
and are actively involved in the game of golf.
In 2011, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the amalgamation of the Men’s and
Ladies’ Associations and it was a year full of exciting events and new initiatives.
We kicked it off with the launch of our new brand identify and platform. The new
logo was very well received as was the tagline and brand position Get to Know
the GAO. As a result of the brand launch, our stakeholders now have a clear and
well-articulated vision of the mission and values that set the foundation for the
Association.
The GAO has been awarding scholarships to
promising young golfers since 1996 and has now
awarded over $337,000. The GAO scholarship
program is supported by donations from partners
including the Estate of Ken McKenzie, Investors
Group, Bushnell,
Acushnet, the Craig Revell
Memorial Award Fund, the Helena Harbridge Award
Fund and the Christine Fisher Memorial Student
Award Fund.

The first annual Past Presidents day held at Toronto Golf Club in September was a
very special experience for all those involved and we followed that closely with a
very successful Volunteer Appreciation Day at Summit in early October. The icing
on the cake was the Gala celebration held in November at Eagles Nest. The event
was highlighted by keynote speaker Annika Sorenstam and sold out with over 230
guests in attendance. It was a very special evening for all in attendance and we
raised more than $40,000 for the Callaway Golf for Kids program! The addition of six
new Golf for Kids local sponsors as well as the launch of our new website portal for
volunteers contributed to an exceptional year for the committee and staff.
In 2011, we welcomed more of the Golf North properties to membership, two new
Member Clubs and reinstated two former Member Clubs. Overall Club Membership
with the GAO remains relatively flat, with a slight 2% decrease from 2010. Although
six of our Golf Groups withdrew from membership, individual participants were
encouraged to remain active with the GAO by joining the Public Player program
independently. The Public Player Program continues in a steady growth pattern,
with an increase of over 20% compared with last year and now represents over 6%
of GAO membership.
Over the past year the Committee reviewed the current Membership Model, and
concluded that we must continue to educate our Members on the benefits of
membership with the GAO and Golf Canada. A 2011 survey of our Public Players
indicates that they value their Membership for Handicapping, Tournaments and to

Golf Association of Ontario
On November 3rd, 2011 more than 220 guests gathered at Eagles Nest Golf Club for the
Golf Association of Ontario 10th Anniversary Fundraising Gala in support of Callaway
Golf for Kids. This grand celebration of golf in Ontario welcomed golf legend Annika
Sorenstam to the event, and the ANNIKA Academy provided tremendous support as
the presenting sponsor.
The evening was an exciting celebration of the ten years since the amalgamation of
the OGA and the OLGA, bringing together guests from across the province to enjoy a
special evening with Annika while raising funds for the future of the game. The evening
included a cocktail hour and silent auction, while the dinner program included the
introduction of the Dick Grimm Distinguished Service Award, a new award that will be
considered the highest honour recognizing individual service to the game of golf in
Ontario.
Anticipation was building throughout the evening for Annika Sorenstam to take to the
stage, and she didn't disappoint, spending almost an hour sharing memories of her
outstanding career in golf and answering dozens of questions from the emcee and from
guests at the Gala. Annika's presence made the evening special for all in attendance
as she greeted guests, posed for pictures, and signed autographs.
The $40,000 raised from the event will help children across Ontario become introduced
to the game of golf in a school environment through the Callaway Golf for Kids program.
The initiative has reached more than 75,000 children in 550 schools across the province
and will continue to grow in 2012.
The Golf Association of Ontario would like to thank all the guests, supporters, sponsors
and donors for their outstanding support of the event and of golf in Ontario.

and contributions by volunteers who have played an instrumental role in promoting the growth
and development of amateur golf throughout the Province of Ontario while preserving the integrity
and traditions of the game.
All individuals who are currently active members of the GAO and have been involved with the
Golf Association of Ontario in a volunteer capacity for more than three consecutive years are
eligible for nomination. These individuals will have made a significant contribution to amateur golf
in Ontario through various GAO initiatives.

Lee Griffin
2011 Honourary Life
Director Award
Consecon resident Sally Cirtwill has been nominated
and selected by a committee of her peers to be the
2011 Golf Association of Ontario Volunteer of the
Year. Sally has been a dedicated GAO volunteer
since 1998, and her volunteer commitments over
the years have encompassed all levels of golf. A
member at Trenton Golf Club, Sally has served as a
Club Representative, District Rules Convener, and a
Rules Official at Club, District, and Provincial events.
As a Level 4 Certified Rules Official since 2000, Sally is
a familiar face at tournaments across the province.
She also continues to encourage members to learn
the rules of golf by running introductory rules seminars.
Sally’s level of commitment as a Rules Official both on
an off the course makes her a valued mentor to many
up and coming officials, and the Golf Association of
Ontario is proud to honour Sally Cirtwill as the 2011
Volunteer of the Year.
dale henderson
This award has been designed to recognize those
volunteers who embody the spirit of volunteerism
and have shown dedication by making a significant
contribution in promoting, supporting and expanding
amateur golf within their District. The 2011 recipient is
Bath resident Dale Henderson, of the Kingston District
Since the amalgamation of the OLGA and the
OGA in 2001, Dale has been an active promoter of
District events at clubs within the Kingston District,
while dedicating his time as both a Course Rater
and Team Leader. He has volunteered countless
hours ensuring the standards of the GAO are carried
out and implemented throughout the District,
while making sure all GAO program information is
circulated within his home club, Loyalist Country Club.
Most notably, Dale has played an integral role in the
success of numerous GAO provincial championships
hosted at Loyalist by gathering, training, and
scheduling a small army of host club volunteers. The
support he has generated at Loyalist for GAO events
has been outstanding, and his work and hours spent
training volunteers at the club has translated into the
numerous world-class events held at Loyalist year
after year. The Golf Association of Ontario thanks
Dale for his tireless contributions to amateur golf and
is proud to name him the 2011 District Volunteer of
the Year.

Syl Apps Special
Achievement Award
YEARBOOK 2011 26
The GAO recognizes those Directors who contribute
their time and hard work over an extended period
of time. The Honourary Life Director Award is
presented at the discretion of the GAO Board of
Directors, following nominations from our Nominating
Committee. Without exception, the recipients of this
award have given unselfishly to promote amateur
golf and the GAO, and have done so in a variety
of ways over a number of years. In 2011, Lee Griffin
was chosen to receive this award for her longtime
dedication and commitment to the GAO.
Lee Griffin of Cambridge has been an active GAO
volunteer since inception in 2001, taking on several
leadership roles; serving as a member of the GAO
Board of Directors and Chairperson of the Rules
Committee. A Level 4 Certified Rules Official, Lee is
an integral part of the GAO when it comes to rules
education within the province, having led countless
rules seminars at the club, district and provincial
level including the development of an interactive
rules education seminar that has assisted in the
recruitment of new Rules Officials. Lee’s passion for
the rules makes her a fixture at competitive golf
events throughout the province.
On top of her commitments to the GAO, Lee is also
a dedicated volunteer with Golf Canada where she
has served as an Associate Governor and Tournament
Chair. She has also been a member of the Board of
Directors at Galt Country Club, and has been on
the organizing committee for a number of amateur
events. Lee has also been honoured in the past as
the 2009 GAO Volunteer of the Year, the 2003 CLGA
Volunteer of the Year, and served as the Chair of the
2003 Canadian Senior Women’s Championship. Lee’s
continued commitment to excellence in her various
roles as a volunteer both on and off the course
make her an invaluable part of the GAO. The Golf
Association of Ontario is pleased to recognize Lee
Griffin as a GAO Honourary Life Director.
Nancy Reid
The recipient of the Syl Apps Special Achievement
Award at the Ontario Sport Awards was Nancy Reid of
Unionville. On January 5th, 2011 Nancy passed away
and the game of golf lost a passionate individual who
has made significant contributions to golf in Ontario.
A volunteer with the OLGA and the GAO for more
than 20 years, Nancy served as District Coordinator
for the Scarboro District for over a decade. As a Level
4 certified Rules Official, Nancy was a familiar face at
golf events across the province and was known for
her fair and friendly approach. She was the “go-to”
rules person at her home club, Sleepy Hollow. Nancy
also dedicated her time to the Ontario Golf Hall of
Fame committee and was a member of the GAO
Board of Directors for four years.
Nancy’s dedication and love for the game of golf
was demonstrated by the countless hours she spent
on the golf course. Her keen eye for detail coupled
with her calm demeanor made her a fantastic asset to
GAO championships. She will be fondly remembered
by many friends, volunteers, GAO staff and players.

Distinguished Service Award. This award is considered the highest honour recognizing individual
service to the game of golf in Ontario. The award is named after Richard H. Grimm, who was
affectionately known as “Mr. Canadian Open” for his service to the event from 1965 to 1993.
Throughout his time in golf, he has been known a masterful coordinator, promoter, official, fan,
and - most importantly - a passionate volunteer who put his heart and soul into making golf better.
The GAO’s Dick Grimm Distinguished Service Award recognizes an individual’s meritorious service
to the game of golf in Ontario as a volunteer. Recipients of this award embody the principles
of integrity, dignity and commitment which are central to the volunteer experience and to Mr.
Grimm’s persona.
emerson creed
Emerson Creed of London has been a dedicated volunteer with
the GAO and the OGA for nearly fifty years. Beginning in 1965 as a
starter/scorer with the OGA, he served on the OGA Board of Governors from 1966-1972 while being actively involved with his home
club, London Hunt and Country Club. He has been a key part of
the GAO’s Course Rating team, volunteering his times as a Team
Leader and Master Course Rater. At various times over the past five
decades, Emerson has been golf captain, as well as Chairman of
both the golf committee and greens committee while promoting
the standards and values of the GAO, OGA and amateur golf in
the province. At the age of 90, Emerson is still a dedicated Course
Rating Team Leader. Emerson’s outstanding leadership and continued dedication to the game have made him a key member of
the GAO’s volunteer team, and the Golf Association of Ontario is
proud to recognize Emerson Creed as a recipient of the Dick Grimm
Distinguished Service Award.

Ontario Golf Hall of Fame
GAR HAMILTON
The Golf Association of Ontario welcomed
two new members into the Ontario Golf
Hall of Fame in 2011. Shelburne Golf and
Country Club owner and revered teaching
professional Sam Young of Cookstown and
longtime Mississaugua Golf and Country
Club head professional and competitive
standout Gar Hamilton of Oakville were
honoured at the annual induction ceremony
at Wooden Sticks Golf Club in May.
Hosted by CTV and TSN sportscaster
Rod Black, the ceremony highlighted
the achievements of the inductees while
celebrating their contributions to golf in
Ontario. The event illustrated the broad
impact that both inductees have had
across the province, with Young shaping the
golf careers of countless young athletes and
Hamilton as a respected head professional
with an impressive competitive record.
The honour comes as Hamilton, who once
caddied for Young, enters his 22nd and final
season before retirement at Mississaugua
and Young celebrates his 50th year as a
CPGA professional.
With more than 160 guests in attendance,
Young delivered an entertaining and
insightful acceptance speech that reflected
on his long career in the sport, including
time spent on the course with fellow Hall of
Fame members and golf legends Al Balding,
George Knudson and Moe Norman. He
reflected on the evolution of his now famous
junior programs that have made Shelburne
Golf and Country Club one of the country’s
most esteemed and accessible junior
development centres. A large contingent
of friends, family and colleagues from
Mississaugua Golf and Country club looked
on as Hamilton shared memories from his
time as one of only eight head professionals
in Mississaugua’s 105 year history. A thirteentime Canadian Open competitor, Hamilton
also shared anecdotes from his successful
competitive career that has seen him
capture almost every Ontario PGA individual
stroke play event including the Ontario PGA
YEARBOOK 2011 28
SAM YOUNG
Championship and three Ontario PGA
Senior Championships.
It was a special evening for all in
attendance, including current Hall of Fame
members Gary Cowan, Marlene Stewart
Streit, Dick Grimm, Mary Ann Hayward, and
Stu Hamilton.
gar hamilton
Gar Hamilton is both a highly accomplished
competitive player and one of Canada’s
best known head professionals. He has been
successful at every level of golf and has
enjoyed a 22 year tenure at Mississaugua
Golf and Country Club where he has worked
tirelessly to promote, teach and play the
game of golf. Previous to his current position,
he served as head professional at Horseshoe
Valley Golf Club in Barrie for eight years.
Hamilton has excelled at competitive
golf throughout his life, beginning with his
Ontario Junior Boys’ title in 1966. After a string
of successful national and international
amateur finishes and captaining his Indiana
University golf team, Hamilton earned
Rookie of the Year honours on the Canadian
Tour following his win at the Manitoba
Open. Two more victories on the Canadian
Tour followed, and Hamilton continued
as a touring professional from 1973-1980
including a stint on the PGA Tour.
After achieving Class “A” Head Professional
status in 1980, Hamilton has captured
almost every Ontario PGA individual
stroke play event including the Ontario
PGA Championship and three Ontario
PGA Senior Championships. In addition
to his Ontario victories, Hamilton has also
won the Canadian PGA Club Professional
Championship
four
times
and
the
Canadian PGA Seniors Championship
once. He has played in 13 Canadian Open
Championships, earned the Ontario PGA
Player of the Year Award (Hunt Trophy)
five times, and was named Ontario PGA
Professional of the Year in 1998.
Sam Young
Sam Young is one of Canada’s most revered
teaching professionals. As the owner and
operator of Shelburne Golf and Country Club
since 1986, Young has been instrumental in
developing countless athletes through his
golf programs. He has been a member of
the Canadian PGA for almost 50 years and is
a former board member and past-president
of both the CPGA and Ontario PGA.
Following a successful playing career
including a year on the Canadian Tour,
Young has taught golf at every level and his
junior programs are well known across the
province. Through his ongoing commitment
to growing the game of golf, he has
developed Shelburne G&CC into one of the
most comprehensive and accessible junior
golf facilities in Ontario. Young continuously
attends learning workshops and seminars
throughout the world and his teaching
methods are constantly evolving with the
science of the game.
Young’s contributions to golf in Canada
have been recognized on several occasions;
in 1986 the Ontario PGA named him Club
Professional of the Year, a designation he
was also awarded by the CPGA and Score
Golf Magazine in 1989. In 2002 and 2003,
Young received the Ontario PGA Teacher
of the Year Award for Junior Golfers and in
2002 the CPGA named Young the Canadian
Junior Leader of the Year.
Congratulations to Gar Hamilton and
Sam Young. We continue to encourage
nominations to the Hall of Fame with the
appropriate literature available online or
from the GAO office. The Ontario Golf Hall
of Fame is housed at Wooden Sticks Golf
Club and we continue to accept donations
to further the undertakings of the Hall.
Respectfully submitted,
Anna Poste
