KIDS - Cook Children`s
April
2011
Premiere: The Workshop
is open for business
Following last week’s
Build-A-Bear Workshop
ribbon-cutting ceremony (at
right) and this week’s preview,
Cook Children’s is now in the
bear-building business and
employees have embraced the chance to give patients a
furry friend.
During the employee preview on Monday, March
28, employees donated more than 50 bears (and other
animals) ‘built’ with love and donated to Child Life for
our patients (below).
This Build-A-Bear is the first of its kind in a
children’s hospital and upon the opening of its
Celebration Room, it will be
the only store in the nation
to have an area, especially
for birthday parties.
Stop by and check the
fun being had at Build-ABear (across from Starbucks).
Brightening the smiles of
our regions’ kids
Cook Children’s and the Children’s Oral
Health Coalition’s (COHC) 2011 Drive for
a Smile toothbrush drive once again lapped
the totals from the previous year with an
astonishing 21,965 toothbrushes collected
from local schools and organizations. In
addition, Cook Children’s employees stepped
up and donated 1,211 individually-wrapped
toothbrushes.
On Friday, March 25, 78 volunteers from
the community, including many from Kohl’s
and local dental offices, pitched in to help
assemble 11,774 children’s dental health kits
and bundle more than 9,000 adult brushes
(below).
Thank you
to everyone who
donated.

The latest Cook Children’s flu news just for you
If you were given a key to patient safety,
you wouldn’t hesitate to use it to unlock a safer
environment for our already fragile patients. Universal
flu vaccination is that key.
In addition to the hospitals on the Immunization
Action Council’s ‘Honor Roll for Patient Safety,’ the
American Academy of Pediatrics publicly endorsed
universal flu vaccinations for employees last October.
Beginning this August before the start of the next flu
season, Cook Children’s will join this elite group of
hospitals with universal flu vaccinations.
With more than 90 percent of Cook Children’s
employees getting vaccinated in 2010, the next step
for universal vaccination is just that…a logical step and
not a giant leap. These vaccinations will apply to all
employees, volunteers and contract workers. Director
of Occupational Health Joyce Hood explains, “It’s the
right thing and overall, it enhances our attention to the
safety of our patients and each other.”
‘Flu Town Hall Meetings’ in Hochberger are
scheduled to provide more information about universal
flu vaccinations: Monday, April 4, at 7 a.m. and
Monday, April 18, at 3 p.m. If you have any questions,
please email [email protected].

Employees Care 2011 Wrapped up
Cook Children’s ‘Employees Care’ is officially over and the numbers do
not lie: Our employees continue to outdo their generosity year after year.
With a final tally of 1,305 employees donating $436,157.09, you have
pushed us past previous records for both participation and total amount
donated. On behalf of the kids that will benefit directly from your giving

Lawson ESS is available and waiting for you
As of last week, the countdown hit zero and Lawson launched into Cook Children’s orbit with Employee
Self-Service (ESS) at your disposal. Fortunately, using Lawson ESS is not rocket science. It’s simple and intuitive.
What are your next steps? First, log in to ESS (via ‘Quick Tools’ on CookNet) and enter your emergency
contact information. You just need to select ‘Human Resources’ and ‘Emergency Contacts’ after logging into
ESS and then click ‘Add’ to enter the contact information. Second, return to the main ESS page and select
‘Payroll’ and ‘Direct Deposit Update.’ You should then select one of your accounts as the default for expense
reimbursement by clicking ‘Set as Default’ beside the desired account.
If you have any questions, email [email protected].
Mark your Calendars...wait...CHEX can do it for you now
Consider this scenario: A CHEX course catches your eye and you eagerly register for it. The day of the
course rolls around and you are a no-show. Why? Because you forgot to add it to your calendar. Thanks to a
new CHEX feature, this gaffe could be a thing of the past.
CHEX now converts the registration notification emails into calendar appointments. This is a convenient
way to streamline the registration, keep you up-to-date and help you never miss a class.
When registering for a learning event (excluding computer-based training or programs), the registration
confirmation email will also serve as a calendar invite you can accept. And now, if you withdraw from an
event the cancellation email gives you the option of removing the item from your calendar.
