Saint Cecilia, virgin & martyr
Rv. 14:1-3, 4b-5; Lk. 21:1-4
FLOWERING TREE
Jesus reigns as king from
his cross, granting entrance
into paradise. The cross
ties together the heavens
and the earth and all
around it. The cross is the
ladder by which we climb to the heavenly
wedding banquet; it is the place where time
and eternity meet; it is the flowering Tree of
Paradise. The cross is the bridge over the
gulf between this world and the next. The
cross is where the flow of the Holy Spirit
enters into time and space and where we are
sucked up into the sweet presence of the
Trinity.

“Memories of Father Jim”
Submitted by: Steve Kreischer and Family
As a longtime parishioner at St. John of God, I am
pleased to share a quick story about our Pastor, Father
Jim. It was in July 2003 when my daughter, Stephanie,
enlisted in the Marine Corp, that I got to know Father Jim
on a personal level. He quickly took a genuine
interest in her well being and would always ask how she
was and what she was up to in her Marine life. The following summer was a very stressful one for my
family as Stephanie was sent overseas to the war in Iraq
for 7 months. During that time, Father Jim was always
very supportive and would be glad to lend an ear to talk
about the fear that every parent of a child in the military
lived with on a daily basis. As all regular parishioners
know, during every Mass Father Jim would always say a
prayer for the men and women in the armed forces and
especially for the ones who were from our parish. These
words were a great comfort to me and my family and I am
forever grateful to Father Jim for his selfless compassion
and kindness. After her safe arrival home from Iraq, she
was here on leave in April 2005 and accompanied us to
Mass in her dress blues. It was a beautiful day and I vividly remember how Father
Jim stood her up during that
Mass to commend and bless
her for her service to our
country. After Mass, we took
pictures of Stephanie with
Father Jim and it was truly a
day that I will never forget.

Today as we celebrate Christ the
King, may we open the door of our
heart so wide that we may listen to
the voice of Jesus calling us to help
build his kingdom her on earth.
Devotion to Christ the King means
loving those people whom, when he was a
king on earth, Jesus liked to have close to
him—the poor and forgotten. It means loving
and being servants of the poor in the way and
in the spirit with which Jesus served them.
Devotion to Christ the King means opposing
and rejection violence in all its forms.
Devotion to Christ the King means working for
peace and reconciliation in our society,
because his kingdom is one of love and justice
and peace.
At this holiday season, your generous
financial support enables us to help families
enjoy a more abundant holiday season. We
thank you on behalf of the needy for allowing

From Fr. Chris N.:
Our Liturgical Year has come to a close, next week we will begin Advent. Today, the last
Sunday of the year, we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. It was Pope Pius XI who introduced
this feast in the liturgy in 1925 because the people of the day had “thrust Jesus Christ and his holy
law out of their lives” and “these had no place in public affairs or in politics.” Although emperors and
kings now exist mostly in history books, we still honor Christ as the King of the Universe by
enthroning him in our hearts and allowing him to take control of our lives. This feast challenges us to
treat others with justice and compassion as Jesus did, especially those whom we consider the least
important, seeing Christ the King in every one of them.
Describing the crucifixion scene, today’s gospel teaches that Christ became the king of our
hearts and lives by his suffering, death and resurrection. In most of the messianic prophecies given
in the Old Testament books of Samuel, Micah, Isaiah and Jeremiah, Christ the Messiah is
represented as a king. The New Testament tells us that Jesus is the long awaited king of the Jews.
Since Christ our king lives as his Holy Spirit in our hearts, as his grace in our souls, we have
to learn to live in his holy presence, doing his will by sharing his forgiving love with others around us.
We have to be constantly aware of his presence in the Bible, in the sacraments and in the
worshipping community.
God’s Blessings Always, Fr. Chris N
De Padre Chris. N.
