April 2015
Our God is big and God cares about all people. Jesus showed us this as he made connections
with rich and poor; people of his own religious tradition and those the religious leaders of his time saw
as a threat to religious life; people who had political power and those to whom no one paid attention;
female, male, youngest to oldest; Jesus showed us the very nature of our God’s love. We see in
scripture that God’s ultimate goal is to gather a family that represents "every tribe and tongue and
people and nation" (Rev. 5:9).
I would venture to assert that most of us tend to surround ourselves with people who we feel
are more like us than not. We may have some variety in our relationships, but we navigate to the
familiar even when our surroundings are diverse. We settle in parts of town that are unofficially labeled
by our ethnic group or our economic class. We settle into a certain way to worship and have strong
reactions to those who worship differently. We begin to think of our church as a shelter that protects us
in our way of doing things and seeing the world, rather than a cocoon that surrounds us as we go
through amazing changes – day-by-day, week-by-week, year-in and year-out - that prepare us to fly.
As we grow from believers in Jesus to followers of his way, we must love as he loved and
reach out and serve as Jesus showed us. This is found in our service to one another (Share and Care,
visitation, prayer and card ministries etc.) – this is called Christian Nurture. We are also called to go out
from our church family and share Christ’s love locally (Social Services Ministry, Family Promise,
Transform Williamsport, Sojourner Truth Ministries, Salvation Army, Food Bank and closet, etc.);
Nationally (through disaster relief efforts throughout the United States and working with families in
impoverished areas of the United States, putting together kits for local use at Mission Central); and
Internationally (Sierra Leone, Haiti, Mission Central international outreach, etc.). As we grow in Christ,
we begin to see that these ministries are not something we do for someone because we are “better
off.” But we walk side by side, building relationships with one another as we serve WITH each other.
And as we walk, we express with our words and action that we are all children of the Lord who loves
each of us. We will come to experience that it is not as much about the work we do but rather the
relationships that are built as we go past the human walls that divide and we participate in building
God’s kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven.
The Great Commission was not a suggestion. Christ's kingdom cannot be built without bold,
radical obedience to Matthew 28:19: "Go therefore..." Somebody has to GO. There's no way around it.
To share the gospel with the whole world, we must be willing to spread our wings and leave the
security of the shelters we have built.
Of course not everyone can get in a car or hop on a plane and go to another state or a foreign
country. Some people have health limitations or family consideration that makes travel impractical.
Don't feel guilty if you are in that category. Instead remember that those who can't go to the mission
field physically can go through prayer or financial support.
Let's continue to support missions as a priority. Let's encourage every one of us, who seeks to
be a Christ follower, to discover our role in God's great plan to tell everyone about Jesus and His love
through our words and our action.
In the name of the ONE who loved us first and loves us still, Jesus our Lord,
Pastor Karen
Witnessing to our faith and serving Christ from Pine Street for 189 years!

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL UPDATE
PLANNING MEETING: A planning meeting will be held on
Sunday, April 19th at 10:00am in Wesley Hall. We are blessed
to have most positions filled at this time. However, it is always
good to have a few extra helpers available to help where
needed.
MISSION PROJECT: Let's see if we can collect a mile of
pennies to help the children in Haiti. Just in case you are
wondering: It takes 84,480 pennies to make a mile. 5 makes a
nickel, 10 makes a dime, so save your pennies; it's worth your
time!
DONATIONS: As in other years, we will have a donation
board set up in the Narthex with items needed for both science
experiments and snacks. Thank you in advance for your
contributions. Thank you, Barb Flock.
MEN’S TUESDAY MORNING FELLOWSHIP
SPRING GOD SIGHTINGS: What was your first sighting
this year that told you Spring Is Here? Did you recognize that
as a God Sighting?
Sighting God in our everyday lives is the focus of our Men's
Tuesday Morning Fellowship. We meet every Tuesday
morning at the Harvest Moon Restaurant, 3rd and Arch Streets
in Newberry from 6:45am to 7:30am. Join us for fellowship,
prayer (and of course breakfast) and we are sure you will
quickly discover you have something to share about God’s
presence and power in your life.
For questions, study material or more information, please
contact Bill Kieser at 570-998-2500 or contact the church
office.

PINE STREET UMC ASSISTS FAMILIES
FACING HOMELESSNESS
The Pine Street family stepped up in a big way to provide
safe shelter, food and transportation for homeless children and
their families for the first 2 weeks in March for Family Promise.
The original plan was for Pine Street Church to host the
families for 2 weeks, using our volunteers for the first week and
volunteers from the extended Family Promise community for
the second week. However, Pine Street volunteers provided
2/3 of the volunteers needed for the two weeks. A total of 36
“Pine Streeters,” plus our office staff (Wilma and Bernadette)
and Pastor Steve helped to provide for the families in some
way.
It turned out to be a crazy 2 weeks with Family Promise as
we had a lot of family turnover. One family “graduated” to their
own apartment, only to find out that their landlord illegally
rented them a condemned apartment. They came back to us
within two days. Another family was scheduled to enter the
program two different times, and didn’t show up either time.
During the second week a family with a very pregnant mom
came to join us. We were ready with a plan, but no baby was
born “on our watch.” A fourth family was with us for the entire
two weeks.
Our next scheduled hosting week is May 31 through June
7. We will again be looking for volunteers to assist with meal
preparation/dinner hosts, overnight hosts, drivers, and set-up
and tear down. Please consider now how you will be able to
help. Mary Ann Vance.
Several of our women attended Spiritual Enrichment Day at
the Oval UM Church recently.
Our next scheduled meeting is Wednesday, April 15th at
1:30 p.m. in the Narthex. Our guest speaker will be Denise
Lorson of the Children's Development Center. Hostesses are
Betty Welliver and Marion Schell
Reminder: Mother-Daughter Banquet, Wednesday, May
27th at 6:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. The Konkle family will
provide musical entertainment. All women of the church are
invited. The cost of the tickets and menu will be in the May
Pine Needle and tickets will be on sale in the office and after
both services beginning May 1st.
Page 3 SOCIAL SERVICE MINISTRY
The Social Services ministry was born out of the Pastoral
Discretionary Fund. The newest ministry of Pine Street is
helping local families from our Williamsport, So. Williamsport
and Newberry communities.
We are open on Friday mornings when an average of ten
needy families apply for financial and personal assistance
each week. Money is expensed for utility bills, transportation,
personal hygiene and baby needs. Bags of food are
distributed; families are counseled and share a moment of
prayer.
As of March 13th we have assisted 99 households or
homeless family units meeting the needs of 156 persons,
including 43 children. Our grants (including Pastoral monetary
assistance to members and food pantry distributions) have
reached $4474.00 since the first of this year.
Most of our help has been to meet utility expenses,
including water bills. Our most frustrating experience is that we
limit the amount of our help to approximately $100 to a family
unit in any 6-month period and that is often not sufficient to
meet their need. For example in March we could not help a
family who had 2 children get their water turned on because
the amount needed was over $250 and they had no other
available funds.
How can you participate in the Social Service Mission?
Donate money through the special envelopes on Sunday; gift
cards to Wegmans, Weis, Giant or Family Dollar; contribute
food to our current food pantry; and by becoming trained as a
Social Service Counselor. If you have questions contact the
Pastor Karen, Bill Kieser, Al Cook or the office.
The prayers and love of our spiritual family are extended to
family and friends in the recent death Sandy Schappell’s sister
Raydelle Pavick. May the comfort and presence of the Savior
be with them in this time of loss.
The prayers and love of our spiritual family are extended to
Mary Spring and her family and friends in the death of George
Spring who passed away on March 8th. May the comfort and
presence of the Savior be with them in this time of loss.

SPECIAL OFFERING ENVELOPES:
We have received our new pack of offering envelopes for this
quarter and one of the specials is Saving Grace. This is a
homeless shelter in the former Grace United Methodist Church
which merged with Pine Street UMC. We deeded the building
to American Rescue Workers for the purpose of housing a
homeless shelter. After necessary renovations to make it a
suitable site for families in need of housing, it is serving the
community well for this serious need. They have provided
shelter to over 1200 individuals, several hundred of whom
were children. Last year antiquated knob and tube wiring was
replaced and new wiring and interior lights were installed.
Through our Foundation, we have helped with $1,000. in 2014.
This is an ongoing need in our community which deserves our
continued collaboration to provide a safe haven, warm bed,
and other amenities for those in a homeless crisis.

SPRING FLING FELLOWSHIP SUNDAY
A Season for Every Activity Under the Heavens
As the Winter turns to Spring I am reminded of Ecclesiastes 3:1
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity
under the heavens.” This scripture is especially poignant to me at
this time because, after much prayer and seeking of God’s will, I
have decided to resign from my position as Youth Ministry
Coordinator of Pine Street Church.
During my 8 years of service I have come to know and love the children and youth of Pine Street and the
youth from our community who participated in our programs. Serving as Youth Coordinator has been a
wonderful experience that has blessed me in many ways. I will always be grateful to the leadership of Pine
Street for allowing me the opportunity to serve God in youth ministry.
I would also like to express my gratitude to all those who helped with youth group. I couldn’t have done it
without you. I want to offer special thanks to Mark Bielski. Mark came to help every week and I could
always count on him to do whatever I needed him to do and he never ever grumbled. He taught me a lot
about what it means to have a humble heart and to be a good and faithful servant to the Lord. I will miss
working with Mark.
Although I am resigning as Youth coordinator I will continue to pray for the youth of our church and of our
community. My prayer is that they will no longer conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by
the renewing of their minds (Romans 12:2) as God sanctifies them by the truth of His Word (John 17:17)
and that they will let their light shine before others, that they may see their good deeds and glorify our
Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).
John 17:17
To the glory and praise of God,
Sanctify them by the truth;
your word is truth.
