SCHOOL CANCELLATION PROCEDURE
There will be no school on November 25 & 26, which is
Thanksgiving vacation.
In the event of bad weather/travel conditions, the decision to cancel or
delay the start of school will be made by 6:30 a.m. When the decision
is made to dismiss school early, special precautions will be taken with
elementary school students to be sure someone is home. Notification
will be broadcast over:
VETERANS’ DAY PROGRAM
The Veterans’ Day program will be held on Thursday, November 11
at 2:00 p.m. in the gymatorium. Everyone is invited to attend this
program in honor of our veterans.

DRESS FOR THE WEATHER
Winter is just around the corner and so is bad weather. All students in
the elementary school will need boots, hats, gloves, and coats or snow
suits during the winter months. Recess will be held outside unless the
temperature is below zero. Students not wearing boots will be
outside, but sitting on the bench. Please make sure your child is
dressed appropriately.
STUDENT PICK-UP
When picking up your child(ren) at the end of the day, we ask that
parents wait by the office or in the elementary parking lot, rather than
by your child’s classroom door. Parents are also asked to sign in at the
main office and pick up a visitors pass when visiting your child’s
classroom.
A.C.T. TEST DATES
The next A.C.T. test date is December 11. Any senior who has not
yet taken the A.C.T. or who would like to re-test should fill out and
mail an application packet by November 5. Packets are available in
the guidance office. Juniors can also take the A.C.T. exam in
December, but the April test date is recommended for juniors.
ELEMENTARY PHY ED REMINDER

for phy ed. Due to the wood floor, students must wear non marking

The student receives a score of “basic” or above on at
least five of the six sections of the Wisconsin Knowledge
and Concepts Exams which are given during grades 4 and
8. The sections of the Knowledge and Concepts Exam are
as follows:
2.
The student (during grade 4 or grade 8) receives a passing
final grade in all subject areas or maintains an overall
grade point average of at least 2.0 on a 4 point scale
covering all subject areas.
3.
For Grade 4 – Regular Education Students:
The student receives the recommendation of his/her
classroom teacher. When making such a recommendation
the teacher must consider the academic abilities of the
student and the likelihood that the student will be
successful at grade 5. The teacher is encouraged to confer
with the student’s previous teachers, and confer with the
parent(s) or guardian of the student and take into
consideration their attitude toward the promotion or
retention of the student. The teacher may also take into
consideration the willingness of the student and the
student’s parents or guardian to participate in summer
school, tutorial programs and other learning opportunities
that may be available to the student.
For Grade 8 – Regular Education Students:
The student receives the recommendation of the middle
school faculty as demonstrated by a simple majority vote
of teachers who have taught the student during grades 7
and 8. In considering their recommendation the middle
school faculty must assess the student’s readiness to be
successful in his or her high school studies. The faculty
may confer with the parent(s) or guardian of the student
and may take into consideration their attitude toward the
promotion or retention of the student.
For Grade 4 and 8 – Special Needs Students (EEN)
The Student has progressed toward his or her education
goals as specified in the student’s Individual Education
Plan (IEP) and receives the recommendation of the
student’s IEP Team.
Big Spring Creek
by Becky Pink
You might have driven past the Big Spring Creek and seen kids wading in the water. Those kids were from the Highland
Community Middle School
Some of the things we have done at Big Spring are:
- We test the water to see how much oxygen is in the creek. We take a small glass bottle and put it in the water until
there are no air bubbles in it. Then we put some chemicals in the water. After that, we put starch in a pipette and slowly put it in
the water. If the water gets a different color, we look at the number on the pipette, and that would be our dissolved oxygen
number.
- We test to see how fast the flow in the water is. We do that by marking off 20 feet and dropping an orange at the start
of the 20 feet. Then we time it. We did this three times.
- We also go into the water and catch bugs. We do this by taking nets and kicking the rocks in the water so we would get
the bugs. Then after we got the bugs, we put them in an ice cube tray so that we can identify them by looking off a chart.
- Another thing every student did was find a tree. Every time we go back out to Big Spring, we will record our tree and
see how it changes.
- The last thing we do is take the temperature of the water. The water isn’t like a nice warm temperature. It is a very cold
creek! We also take the Ph of the water. The Ph is how much acid is in the water.
The students at the Highland Community Middle School enjoy learning out at the Big Spring Creek, and we can’t wait
long enough to be back out there!
Highland Oral Histories
by Mackenzie Drury
Have you ever wondered what Highland was like before you were around? That’s exactly what the Highland Community Middle
School children wondered until we did our oral history interviewing project.
We started our interviews by coming up with questions that we would like to ask the people we interviewed. We then practiced
our interviewing skills on Mr. Al Michek, which was very helpful because we found our mistakes and fixed them before the
actual interview.
On the day of the interviews, we went over our questions and how to use the tools, such as the video camera and the still shot
camera.
All the interviews went well, and we learned a lot about Highland’s interesting history.
The Country Cardinals’ Haunted Hayride
by Bianca Yager
Every year, for the past few years, our Country Cardinals 4-H club has been having a “Haunted Hay Ride” that we members put
together. We have a lot of kids and their parents in it. Every year we have a lot of fun and enjoy it a lot.
We do a lot of other fun stuff in 4-H, too, like the Fair and other things. But this is my favorite of all. I hope everyone can make it
to the Haunted Hay Ride this year. If you like what we do and think it is fun, next year you could be in it, having fun.
The Haunted Hay Ride is at Jerry and Brenda Yager’s farm, on October 22, 23, 29, and 30.We will be out there serving food and
drinks. In the past we had different things that we did. We raise money for our 4-H club and use it for different activities we do.
Highland Food Drive… November 19
The Highland Community Middle School will be visiting homes in town for food pantry items on Friday, November 19 between 5:30 and 7:30
pm. Especially needed at this time are canned vegetables, soups, boxed stuffing, instant potatoes, canned cranberry sauce, jelly, peanut butter,
and other foods for Thanksgiving dinner. The Iowa County Food Pantry is also always in need of household and personal items like hand soap,
paper towels, toilet paper, and dish soap. Anything you are able to give will be appreciated.

Band News and Thank You’s
Congratulations to all of the students who
marched in the 2010 Homecoming parade.
Thank to the high school band for their efforts
that resulted in a fantastic half-time
performance. I appreciate all of your hard
work and dedication to these events.
On September 25th, the high school band
participated in Wisconsin Band Day at Camp
Randall. They were part of a mass band that
consisted of 5,000 high school band students
under the direction of Mike Leckrone. The
band kicked-off the half-time show of the
Badger football game. Thank you to all who
participated and made this a wonderful and
exciting experience.
We would like to invite you to join us for our
Veterans Day Program on November 11th, at
2:00p.m. in the gymatorium.
Our 8th grade band students will be
participating in middle school honors band
hosted this year by River Ridge on November
4th. They attend an all day rehearsal with
other middle school students from our
conference. That evening they perform a
concert for the public at 7:00p.m. I would
encourage everyone to come and support
this wonderful opportunity for our students.
On November 23rd, the middle school band
students will be attending the Madison
Symphony Orchestra at the Overture Center
in Madison. They will learn how some of
classical music’s most famous pieces were
based on something as simple as threenotes. They will also learn how these same
pieces have become a part of their everyday
lives through video games, commercials,
movies and cartoons.
Our bands are busy learning music for our
holiday concert. All four bands are excited to
spread some holiday cheer. Please join us
on December 13th at 7:00p.m. in the
gymatorium.
