he elegant white school house at the entrance to the village
of Mendocino was the town grammar school for forty years;
then a middle school; next a recreation center; and now, with the
support of the coastal community, it’s become the Community
Center of Mendocino, a hub of community activity.
Community Center of Mendocino is also a 501c3 non-profit, which
holds the lease on this school district property. A grassroots
movement by local parents, neighbors, and community activists, Community Center
of Mendocino has assumed responsibility for the After-School Enrichment Program
formerly sponsored by the Mendocino Coast Recreation and Parks District, whose
financial difficulties interfered with the agency’s ability to manage and develop
Mendocino’s programs. Community Center of Mendocino is dedicated to a sustainable,
vibrant, and inclusive community center that can succeed without tax support by
strengthening community input and participation.
The After-School Enrichment Program, which is now a state-licensed child care
program for school-age children, is essential to working parents who depend on the
community center for after-school care. The after-school program continues to be a
priority for Community Center of Mendocino, but over time the organizers hope that
the center’s programs will grow to serve a broader cross section of the Mendocino
population, including seniors, toddlers, teens, and their parents.
“How do we use these facilities to benefit our community, and help support rather than
compete with other non-profits that are struggling to make ends meet in this town?
This is a recurrent theme in our weekly meetings,” says CCM Board Member Wanda
Traber. “The board needs your ideas and your talents. How can the community center
serve your family, and also, what would you like to offer to your community?”
Adjacent to the community center, and central to Community Center of Mendocino’s
vision of revitalization is Friendship Park, the community ball field.
“Friendship Park is an amazing representation of what this community can do,” says
CCM Board Member Paul Katzeff. Built in the 1990s with a hundred thousand dollars
in cash contributions, two hundred volunteers, and a quarter million dollars in in-kind
donations, “The park is the ‘hello’ we give ourselves and our visitors. It’s a strong visual
that says we are a living and viable community.”
Many folks have voiced their dismay at watching the “best little ballpark west of
Hoboken” deteriorate, and have been frustrated by the lack of an organized way to pitch
in and restore it. These people: contractors, electricians, and landscape professionals,
will form the core of Community Center of Mendocino’s “Friendship Park Dream Team”
to solve the critical water issues and return the facility to its original splendor.

leagues for adults as well as

football, softball, track, and
field hockey. If only 5 percent

Center of Mendocino will host the return of Mendocino Stone Soup, a celebration of
community sponsored by FLOCKworks and the Mendocino Coast Children’s Fund. “It
isn’t the place, it’s how we come together that matters,” says Stone Soup visionary and
organizer Janet Self. “Stone Soup is fun because it’s so genuine, so sweet, it will give
people a vivid sense of what’s going on here.”
Community Center of Mendocino is also putting together a
Friendship Park Alumni Association to help support the renovations. “Alumni endow the field with history, stories,
and financial support,” says Paul Katzeff, “building a bridge for inspiration between
the past and the present.”
“I had such a great time in Little League when I played there,” says CCM Board Member
Niki Traber. “I feel honored that I get to participate in regenerating that good energy for
my kid and her community.”
The facilities inherited by Community Center of Mendocino are more extensive than
many people realize. In addition to Friendship Park and the community center’s six
spacious rooms, there’s a dojo with wall-to-wall mats, a dog park facilitated by
MCDOG [Mendocino Coast Dog Owners Group], a community garden, pétanque terrain,
picnic area, classroom garden, fitness par course, and playground. The After-School
Enrichment Program fills the rooms between 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. weekdays, but
evenings and weekends there are adult classes, support groups, spiritual programs,
dancing, and space available for a variety of public and private events.
“There’s so much opportunity here, and so much more that we need to do to assure
that these facilities and programs are sustainable,” says CCM Board President Elaine
Hillesland. “People keep stepping forward, washing windows, writing grants, graphics,
bookkeeping, it’s an amazing outpouring of support, and a demonstration of how
community-building feeds us both individually and collectively.”
What’s happening, and how can I get involved?
A fun way to get acquainted and check out the scene is at the monthly potluck where
community members sit down together for conversation, good eats, and an opportunity
to share information and ideas for the future of the center. At 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on
the second Sunday of each month, all ages are welcome.
There are also a half dozen committees meeting independently and in coordination
with the Community Center of Mendocino board, and these are open to new ideas and
willing hands. They include fund-raising, event planning, programs and facility rentals,
communications, and buildings and grounds.
Mark your calendars and stay tuned for Saturday, February 2, 2013 when Community
Here is the Story of Stone Soup:
Long ago in troubled times, people warily hid what-ever they had.
A wanderer coming to a village was told “There’s nothing here for
you . . . move on.” “Oh, I have everything I need,” she said. “In fact, I
will make Stone Soup to share with all of you.” She set up a pot of
water over a fire and with great ceremony, dropped in an ordinarylooking stone. By now, villagers had come out or watched from their
windows. As the wanderer sniffed the “broth” and licked her lips,
hunger began to overcome their skepticism. “Ahh,” the woman
said to herself, “I do like a tasty stone soup. Of course, a bit of salt
(garlic, potato, onion, etc) would make it even better.” And over the
day, villagers “found” little bits to add to the pot . . . and so on, until
there was indeed a delicious meal for all. And as everyone gathered
to enjoy the soup, the villagers exclaimed to each other “And to think,
it was only made from a stone.” Each giving what they can, a greater
good is realized.
Mendocino Stone Soup celebrates a new era for the Community Center
of Mendocino. Our Center has after school activities, community
gardens and dog park, sports fields, playground, adult classes,
martial arts, performance, rehearsal and meeting space, film nights,
and much more. In these uncertain times, we need everyone working
together to sustain this vital center of community! Strong local
leadership, partnership of our school district, and active involvement
of community members means together our Center will be a thriving
place for all, now and in the future!
Join us: Saturday, February 2, 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
A special bowl, a simple feast with music and fun shared
with friends and neighbors.
Each giving what you can . . . All funds help create
a sustainable future for our Center!

the month, 4:30 p.m.–6:30 p.m. Eat food, share ideas, and nourish community. Photo by

A New Beginning . . . (and wish list)
Community Center of Mendocino (CCM) and the Mendocino School District
have signed a three-year lease for the old grammar school, Friendship Park,
and the adjacent property. We are on our way! A small group of people have
taken on this project at the urging of many. Now the community center is ours,
and it’s up to all of us to bring dreams to fruition.
CCM needs your ideas, your skills and energy, and your financial contributions
to make this happen. We are especially in need of funds at this crucial moment.
Even small donations of money or the equipment and supplies that we would
otherwise have to purchase, will help keep the doors open and the programs
under way. Larger contributions, and pledges over time will help grow the
Center’s programs. Help now by pledging your financial support.
We need to come together as a proud and resourceful community to ensure
that our children continue to have the enrichment programs they deserve, to
restore Friendship Park to its former glory, to build programs for our toddlers,
teens, adults and seniors, and to ensure that the dojo, community garden,
pétanque court, dog park, and picnic area will thrive and serve the needs of
our citizens. The Community Center is a fabulous resource—what can we
make of it?

activists. Peg Brown Levy, CCM Director, and Elaine Wing Hillesland, CCM Board President

Other plans currently under discussion include a monthly film night and discussion
group, bingo, a senior exercise program, and an Acoustic Kitchen. Grant applications
are in-the-works for scholarship funding, and for phthalate-free tumbling mats for
toddler classes, and equipment needed to outfit the dance studio for adult exercise
programs.
Please mail your financial contributions to Box 551, Mendocino, CA 95460,
drop off at the Village Toy Store in Mendocino, or come by the Community
Center at School and and Pine Streets in Mendocino. If you have items to
donate, ideas and energy to share, events or programs you’d like to sponsor
or teach, CCM would like to hear from you. For news and program information,
visit the website at www.ccmendo.org.
THANK YOU!

Looking to the Future
by Niki Traber
The possibilities are seemingly endless. The
spark is the individual with a mission, and the fuel
is collaboration. We hope especially to integrate
programs that engage a mix of generations.
For example: Shakespeare in the Park. We
could build a stage on the Friendship Park ball
field and create a festival of performances.
Adults, seniors, teens, and preteens could
work together, not only performing, but in set
design and construction, costuming, marketing,
and project management. With all the theatre
expertise flowing through this community, the
mentors are surely here.
We hope one day for a commercial kitchen
to support home economics programs at the
high school, to make facilities available to
local caterers and bakers, and to provide the
community with a venue for culinary activities.
We’d like to bring back the video/audio lab
that once served at the center. A place for our
many musicians and budding filmmakers to
learn, share, practice, and record. Middle and
high school students could have a hands-on
opportunity at recording arts, maybe even
produce their own label, with the assistance
of local professionals. Again, the mentoring
possibilities are plentiful in this department!
Who remembers the outside basketball court?
Just about non-existent today, it was once
enjoyed by teenagers and adults, and is sorely
missed. We would like to see the court in use
again, perhaps with a roof or a shell to make
it accessible year round. Kids and adults could
spend a rainy day playing basketball, and create
more interaction between the town folk. What
about peer counseling, academic tutoring, and
a mentoring program where local tradespeople,
artists, athletes, and business people have an
opportunity to introduce the younger crowd to
their field of interest and share their expertise
one-on-one? Consider an annual cultural
festival with dancing, food vendors, music,
and handmade items for sale. We need more
opportunities for our small bubble here on the
coast, to celebrate the stories, traditions, and
diversity of the world.
These are a few of the many ideas floating
around for the next chapter at the Community
Center of Mendocino.

After twenty-seven years’ operating a preschool at the same location,
Caspar Children’s Garden needs to move out of its aging buildings by

that would have to find child care elsewhere and the loss of many teaching
jobs—if we don’t find a suitable location in time.

Because our roots rest in our unique approach to education and the quality
of our teachers, we know that these assets can be taken with us and new
play spaces can be recreated elsewhere. At this critical time in our school’s
life, we’re turning to the community for help in finding a new place.
We’re looking from Fort Bragg to Mendocino for a suitably zoned home
or usable building with minimum 1,200 sq. ft. of visually open space for
indoor activities along with some extra rooms for office and storage and
three bathrooms. Parking for about a dozen cars, safe access, and a fenced
yard of approximately 3,000 sq. ft. are also vital. If you know of a suitable
space for rent or lease, please contact me or our director, Diana Taur, at
961-0239 or [email protected].

Annual Fort Bragg Lighted Boat Parade
The annual Fort Bragg Lighted Boat Parade is in its fourth year
and is easily observed from any of the fine waterfront restaraunts
in Noyo Harbor, or from the parking area for Noyo Beach. · The
event was started by members of the Lost Coast Chapter of the
Traditional Small Craft Association. In years past we have had
the participation of many small craft, including kayaks, canoes
and skiffs, as well as support from Coast Guard Station Noyo. We
welcome all participants who have a vessel and lights. Since the
event is dependent on weather conditions, if we are rained out
on November 30, the event will be moved to December 2. If that
day is rained out, we will shoot for the following Friday, which is
December 7. · Lighted boats, kayaks, canoes, fishing and pleasure
boats assemble near the Noyo Bridge at 5:30 p.m. Parade starts at
dark and goes from the bridge, upriver to the Coast Guard Station
Noyo and returns to the bridge, making two runs. · Noyo Harbor,
