Backpack May Color 2010
Did you hear the news...over 360!
CB Cares , had over 360
nominations this month for
our Boomerang Youth Recognition Award Program. We
usually average 100 nominations per month!!! We were
overwhelmed with the response
to taking the assets into our
community and we plan on having many more
community celebrations such as this one again in the next
school year.
Keep those nominations coming for
our deserving youth!
APRIL’S CELEBRATION OF READING FOR
PLEASURE EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS
Throughout this past month , CB Cares and many community
members and businesses partnered in promoting the
Boomerang Award Asset #25, Reading for Pleasure. This
first-time community initiative helped spread the word of how
important it is to incorporate leisure reading into our busy
lives, at any age! Beginning at First Friday Doylestown in
April, events were held at the Masonic Lodge, Busy Bee
Toys, Borders Bookstore and Café in Warrington, Saxbys,
Doylestown Bookstore, Booktenders Secret Garden Children’s
Bookstore and Gallery, and the Doylestown Library. We had
crowds at every location.
Special thanks to this year’s Reading for Pleasure volunteer
committee: Lucy Brennan, Hayden Saunier, Sandra Cody,
Melissa Yates, and Lisa Pretecrum. Special thanks, also, To
Huntington Learning Center for their donation of bookmarks
which were given out at various venues.
On a Monday afternoon in Miss Lere’s 1st grade
classroom there were penguins and popcorn. Low and
behold it was the unofficial “Reading for Pleasure” kickoff at Kutz Elementary. Our beloved 40 Assets ambassador Marjie Devlin was awarded a CB Cares mini-grant
and with the funding promoted April’s featured Asset #25
– Reading for Please. The class gathered as Mrs. Kahley
read to them from this special book. Miss Lere’s students
are “Assets in Action”.
BOOMERANG YOUTH RECOGNITION AWARD
The following students represent our April Boomerang
Youth Recognition Award recipients for Asset #25
Reading for Pleasure. Young person reads for
pleasure most days of the week, either alone, with family
members, or with friends.
Elementary School: Sean Cammon, 5th grade, Cold Spring
Elementary. Sean does not just read books, he devours them. Late in the evening, after darkness has
fallen, a faint glow can always be seen from Sean’s
loft bed. At this time Sean enters his own private
world of mystery and intrigue, of action and suspense.
At times he is so excited by a story that he has to
wake up his parents. Reading did not come easy for
Sean but he always worked very hard at it. It was not
until 4th grade that it all “clicked.” Now in 5th grade
he is an avid reader which makes everyone around
him very pleased and proud.
Middle School: Andrew DeVita, 8th grade, Holicong Middle School.
Andrew was nominated by 2 of his peers. When he
and his friend walk down to the bus platform after
dismissal, he insists that they stop at the library. He is
extremely quick when it comes to finishing a book,
and he commits himself to finishing all of the books
that he reads, even if he doesn’t like the book! His
friends are so appreciative that he loves discussing
books when he finishes them. As he sits next to his
friend on the bus, he talks about the latest book that
he has read. When they are not talking about books
on the bus, he is reading one. Andrew was so excited to be elected
captain of the Reading Olympics team. His passion for reading is
evidenced every day by these friends and many others.
High School: Colleen Liebel, 12th grade, CB West. From the time she
was a 10th grader, Colleen has made it a priority to
come to the library to check out books for leisure
reading. In her 1st year of high school, when pleasure
reading drops off for most students getting
acclimated to the rigorous demands of a high school
curriculum, Colleen still checked out 35 books. She
was one of the first students to sign up for the
librarian’s student reviewer program when she was in
10th grade. To this day, Colleen continues to be her
most prolific student reviewer, frequently stopping in
and asking what book the librarian would like her to read and review
next. Her reviews are posted throughout the library, and the librarian has
seen more frequent checkouts of those titles that Colleen promotes. In
total, Colleen has checked out over 83 books from the CB West library,
which puts her at #12 on the librarian’s list of all-time top library patrons
and the school year isn’t over yet. For all of her years of high school, she
has been a consummate reader who immerses herself in literature and
openly shares her love of reading with others.
May’s Assset is #31 Restraint. Young person can identify, regulate,
and control his/her behaviors and emotions in healthy ways, particularly in stressful or unstructured situations. This will will be the last
asset of this academic year. Nominations will be due the week of May
24th. We vote on May 27th.
CB Cares partners with The Bucks County Herald and
Outback Steakhouse, Jamison PA on this award.
YOUTH TO
COMMUNITY
(Y2C) ARTS SERIES
We had a great month of
community performances in April. At
several venues our teen musicians were part of
programs where we featured Asset #25, Reading
for Pleasure. Some groups performed for the
first time- a string quintet from Lenape (the
music teacher joined this performance) and a jazz
quartet from Lenape. Our monthly Saxby’s CB
Cares music night on April 24th included a full
evening of performers along with, for the very
first time, middle and high school poets reading
their work in between the musical sets. We called
it the Words and Music Café at Saxbys. As an
aside, we also featured short original work by our
local teens all month long at Saxbys—this work
hung on the wall of the shop, for customers to
grab if they were looking for something to read.
We called it “Writings on the Wall,” and we hope
to repeat this program again. ***We will be
back at Saxbys for our musical night on
Saturday, May 15th, between 6-9 pm.
A quintet with music teacher from
Lenape at Borders
May also brings a new venue, the Chalfont
Borough Krupp Park behind the Borough
Administration Building on Rte. 152, right off
Rte. 202 in Chalfont. They have a lovely gazebo
where our teen musicians will be playing on
Saturday night, May 22, from 6-8. Please come
sit outside on the grass with a blanket or chair. It
should be a wonderful night of music!
Y2C will be featured at First Friday
Doylestown on June 4th. Come out to
State and Hamilton to hear some great
sounds! Also in June, two of our performers will
be featured at the opening of the June Balloon
exhibit at the Children’s Gallery of the Michener
Art Museum. The date is Saturday, June 6 and
the program begins at 10:45 a.m.
We hope to begin our performances at Chubby’s
Dairy Barn in Plumsteadville in the next month
or two. Look for us there!
