An Epic Achievement!
After being on Epic for just over two months, I am pleased to announce that CaroMont
Regional Medical Center has been recognized by HIMSS Analytics as achieving Stage 6
status in our Electronic Medical Record (EMR) compliance!
HIMSS Analytics tracks health care organization's progress after adopting an EMR program,
such as Epic. They have an eight-level (0-7) model to measure progress, with level 7 being an
environment where paper charts are no longer used. Until we implemented Epic in August,
CaroMont Regional Medical Center had been stuck at Stage 5 due to limitations and availability
of modules within previous EMR systems.
Mike Johnson
Chief Information Officer
As fewer than 25% of hospitals have achieved Stage 6 status, this accomplishment reflects
our commitment to patient safety and quality care through our electronic medical record
adoption. Stage 6 hospitals have achieved significant advancement in their IT capabilities and are well positioned to
engage in initiatives such as HRO, Meaningful Use, Pay for Performance, ACO and government quality reporting.
Thank you to everyone who worked hard to make this achievement a reality, including patient care staff, Epic team
members, Senior Leadership and the Board of Directors. Now, lets set our sights on Stage 7!
CaroMont Health Earns a Grade ‘A’ for Safety
CaroMont Regional Medical Center has again earned an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Score from The Leapfrog
Group!
The Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety Score uses data collected from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey,
CMS and the American Hospital Association to calculate a letter grade safety rating. Hospital
Safety Scores are assigned to more than 2,500 hospitals across the nation twice annually, and
CaroMont Regional continues to achieve the highest grade.
To see our scores as they compare nationally and locally, visit the Hospital Safety Score website
at www.hospitalsafetyscore.org. Great job, CaroMont!
CaroMont Gets with the Guidelines
CaroMont Regional Medical Center was recently recognized by the American
Heart Association/American Stroke Association for our continued success in
improving quality of care and outcomes for stroke and heart failure patients. Get
with the Guidelines helps hospitals ensure the care provided to these patients is
aligned with the latest research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific
evidence with the ultimate goal to save lives and promote early recovery.
CaroMont Regional was honored with the following awards:
Get With The Guidelines—Stroke - Gold Plus and Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite
Get With The Guidelines—Heart Failure - Gold Plus and Target: Heart Failure Honor Roll

Get to Know Our New Chief Nursing Officer
We are pleased to welcome Scott Wells, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, to CaroMont Health as the Vice
President and Chief Nursing Officer for CaroMont Health. Here is a little about Scott and why
he chose CaroMont:
"My wife and I had a desire to move from the Midwest to the Carolinas to be closer to our son,
his wife and our two grandchildren who live in Shelby, NC. While researching vacant CNO
positions in the Carolinas, God smiled on us and CaroMont in Gastonia appeared with a vacancy.
After researching CaroMont, the city of Gastonia and having the pleasure of interviewing with
so many kind, talented and professional CaroMont leaders, I could not have asked for a better
organization to have the honor of joining its leadership team! I have been blessed to be in a
leadership role for 30 years, and consider myself to be in my prime and look forward to a new
chapter in my life with CaroMont Health!"
Scott Wells, MSN
Chief Nursing Officer
This is How We Care: Letters From our Patients and Families
Each month, we receive letters and notes from our patients and their families expressing gratitude for the care they received from
the hospital and CaroMont Medical Group practices. Here is one we received recently.
CaroMont Health Doctors and Nurses:
This is a note of sincere thanks for the care that was given to my sister-in-law while in ICU. Dennis, her nurse, was so very kind and
compassionate with our family during this very trying time. After her move to 6 South, her nurse Beth and aide Tiffany treated everyone
with kindness and made us all feel cared for. These fine staff members should be commended for their love and compassion. Being a nurse
myself with several years of practice, it was wonderful to know that CaroMont continues to have wonderful and caring staff members.
Thank you again to all of the nurses, aides and doctors who took care of my family. May God bless each of you.
Honoring our Veterans
In honor of Veterans Day (Wednesday, November 11), we would like to
thank all veterans for your service to our country and CaroMont Health.
Our roots as an organization are based in the work of our local veterans and,
more importantly, in the memory of those Gaston County veterans who
gave their lives in defense of our country. We will never forget the sacrifices
they made and will continue to honor them in the future.
Thank you!
