Winning the Weather Lottery
in the Year of the Polar Vortex

There were a lot of words used to convey to Floridians what
winter was like this year for the rest of the country. Bitter, harsh,
and brutal come readily to mind. Pictures circulated in the news
and on social media to try to give the beach chair crowd a sense
of the suffering being incurred in areas North of Tallahassee. I
personally saw pictures of the great lakes nearly frozen over and
snow banks that covered street and stop signs along the sides of
roads while on Facebook there are pictures of people in shorts
and flip flops hanging Christmas lights on palm trees in our local
communities.
Why would anyone subject themselves to such hardship? Why
indeed. Everyone has their own reasons for coming to our area
either in the winter or permanently. For me the choice would be
easy. I don’t know how to ice fish but I do know how to fish where
there is no ice! Rather than reinvent the wheel it would be better
for me to stay here and practice what I already know how to do.
It is not the same thing if you are a northern fisherman. Unless
you own a 10 foot auger, a dynamite factory or a submarine, it
may actually be easier to come to Florida than try to ice fish this
winter. Yes, you will need sunscreen; no, there are no walleye; and
yes, you can eat the live shrimp you don’t use for bait. You will
need the usual fishing tackle and can even can bring your boat
with you, as we are blessed with many boat ramps, docks and
marinas here. You will only have to get a pair of shorts, a short
sleeve shirt, and a favorite fishing hat that has no kind of fur or
ear flaps. After that you only need to learn where the fish are.
Since there are no ice shantys here you will have to rely on other
means of looking for hot fishing action. Proven methods include
following your neighbor who always seems to be catching the
fish, loitering around the tackle shop pretending that you are not
listening to stories of the day’s catch, and my personal favorite
of riding around until you see someone else reeling them in and
simply anchoring right next to them. The key here is to pretend
to not speak English so they tire of asking you to give them more
space. No matter what they say just wave, smile and be friendly
as if you have no clue whatsoever that you are stepping on their
toes. With a little luck they will get discouraged and move, giving
you even more space.
All joking aside we are truly blessed with not only the greatest
weather in the country, but the greatest fishing too. Take time to
hire a guide or to venture out on your own to find out what all the
fuss is about. It will make you forget all about that snow shovel!

Cheryl brings 22 years of Human Resources
and Executive experience with her to Tarpon.
She and her husband Ron moved to Cape
Haze in 1995 from upstate NY. Cheryl
purchased an art gallery/home accent store
in Boca Grande which she sold after 6 years
to get involved in real estate. Being a Realtor
for 4 years Cheryl saw the opportunity to be
part of the administrative end of the business.
Presently well-rounded in the business as a
whole, Cheryl is actively selling again. She
offers a fresh perspective and is committed to
making your real estate transaction enjoyable.

Terry and Crystal Smith started visiting
friends in Sarasota in 1991. Shortly after
that they bought a Condo there in 1993.
They then discovered Placida Harbour
in 1996 and lived there part-time. After
becoming more familiar with the area,
they bought a lot in Boca Grande and
completed their home in 2004. Terry has
32 years of sales experience and hopes
to expand that experience to interested
buyers that hopefully will love this
beautiful area as much as they do.

John, a former real estate broker and
educator, town assessor, and life-long
real estate appraiser, and Fran, former
middle/high school teacher, use their

The mission of the Tarpon Real Estate and Tarpon Rental Services “Beach Homes for
the Brave” program is to honor, support, and thank our active duty and wounded
service men and women by providing a free, three day vacation on either Palm Island
or Little Gasparilla Island with their family. It is the hope of Tarpon Rental Services that
this program will inspire not only our troops but our community to support the
brave work of our troops who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan and their families.
