BBQ Saturday
The Old Station Volunteer Fire
Company will host its 34th
annual Chicken barbeque fundraiser on Saturday, July 30, from
noon to 5 p.m. at the Old Station
Fire Hall. The menu includes
a half chicken, salad, baked
beans, bread, dessert and beverage. The cost is $10 for adults
and $6 for children. The event
will also feature a raffle and a
crafts fair of original arts and
handmade crafts as well as
fire department T-shirts, sweatshirts and hats.

Fire within 200 yards
of Johnson Park homes
The Sunday afternoon Park Fire started just south
of Johnson Park amid temperatures of 95 degrees
and 32-mile-per-hour wind gusts. Firefighters from
Burney, Cassel, Cal Fire, the U.S. Forest Service and
the Intermountain Conservation Camp contained the
nearly three-acre fire by late afternoon. Due to the
chances of spot fires starting by wind gusts, four
fixed-winged aircraft circled overhead for more than
four hours in case they were needed to drop fire retardant while a Cal Fire helicopter made water drops.

the
Central
Valley
Regional Water Quality
Control Board is urging
swimmers, boaters and
recreational users to
avoid direct contact with
waters containing bluegreen algae, which is
now beginning to bloom
in Lake Britton.
A headline in a Redding daily newspaper last
week indicated the algae
was toxic. No such determination has been made
by the board, which is
awaiting the results of its
own testing.
Algae of a similar nature, also known
as cyanobacteria, has
shown up in the warmwater reservoir on an
annual basis, but usually
in mid to late August.
The algae disappears
once cooler air temperatures occur.
Local residents and
park rangers are used
to seeing the annual
occurrance, but it seems
to have come as a surprise to the water quality
agency.

Attempted
murder
arrest in
Big Bend
On Thursday at about
6:58
p.m.,
deputies
from the Shasta County
sheriff’s Burney station
received a report of a
possible robbery in progress at the Pit Stop Store
in Big Bend.
Dispatchers advised
responding deputies that
a struggle could be heard
on the phone line and a
male subject stating “It’s
too late now” and “He’s
killed a lot of people.”
A dispatcher also
overheard a statement
on the phone line of “I’m
going to die today,” said
sheriff’s Sgt. Quentin
Johnston.
The dispatcher additionally heard statements
that the male was armed.
While
responding,
deputies were told the
suspect had left the store
and the store owner
had been assaulted and
requested medical attention.

Deputies arrived on
scene and contacted the
store’s owner, Doug Wakefield, 66, who sustained
welt marks throughout his
upper body and back.
Wakefield
declined
transportation to the hospital and deputies searched
the area, locating Hardy
near Summit Lake Road in
Big Bend, Johnston said.
Deputies were able to
detain Hardy without incident and no weapons were
located. Wakefield was able
to positively identify Hardy
as the suspect during an
infield show-up.
Wakefield
described
the incident as starting
with Hardy harassing a
female employee. Wakefield tried to intervene, but
Hardy attacked him hitting
him multiple times with a
necklace causing the welts
throughout his body, Johnston said.
Wakefield also reported
Hardy struck him in the
back of the head with his
fists numerous times while
he was on the ground.
Wakefield’s statements
were confirmed by deputies
who reviewed surveillance
footage of the incident.
Hardy was placed under
arrest and later booked
into the Shasta County jail
for attempted murder, torture, assault with a deadly
weapon,
and
terrorist
threats.
He was being held Tuesday on $500,000 bail.

Local elk studies among
grants awarded by CDFW
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife
(CDFW) has awarded $1.1
million in grants for big
game conservation projects
in Fiscal Year 2016-2017.
The Big Game Grant
Program (BGGP), which
allocates funds generated by big-game hunters
through the purchase of
tags for sheep, bear, deer,
pronghorn antelope and
wild pig, identified 15 proposals for projects that will
benefit big-game populations and the habitats upon
which they depend.
“This year we are funding
some exceptional studies
that will broaden our knowledge and understanding of
the unique needs of elk and
sheep,” said Craig Stowers,
CDFW’s Big Game Program Manager.
“Other projects will help
restore crucial habitat for
deer and other wildlife, and
provide water sources necessary for their survival.
“All of these proposals
have been identified as an
appropriate use of hunter
dollars. Their funding goes
directly to benefit and sustain the wildlife populations
they hunt.”
The projects are selected
and budget approved by a
public advisory committee.
Funded proposals must
reflect the grantees’ dedication to big game conservation and management and
meet a series of criteria,
including increased hunting opportunity. Awards
approved for 2016-2017
include:
Four grants totaling
$127,000 to the Rocky
Mountain Elk Foundation
to study elk populations in
Modoc and Siskiyou counties.
Three grants totaling
$277,000 to Oregon State
University and the California chapter of the Wild
Sheep Foundation for several studies on the effects
of pneumonia and respiratory disease in Desert Bighorn Sheep.
A $29,000 grant to the
Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep to
develop water sources for
wildlife on isolated parcels of land in the Mojave
Desert.
A $205,000 grant to
Humboldt State University
to study Roosevelt elk populations in Humboldt and
Del Norte counties.

So this is summer,
is it?

It was just another day and I was indulging a carefree moment of complaining about the weather. “I can’t
believe it’s so hot today,” I muttered. I thought I was
talking to myself but obviously, I had an audience.
Have you ever said or did something not realizing
somebody was watching you?
Every time I am in a restaurant eating, I endeavor
to remember there is an audience and try my very
best not to spill the soup on my lap. Although, I must
admit that that kind of lap dance always gets a vigorous round of applause from the audience. Don’t ask
me how I know.
I thought in my own special way of thinking that I was
alone only to find out the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage was within earshot of my remarks. I must say
she is rather remarkable. Those “earshot moments”
are quite extensive. I will not go as far as to say that
she can read my mind, although I think she can, but
she seems to know what I am thinking even before I go
through the effort and labor of thinking.
I do not know why I even spend the energy thinking
on my own. Even when I do think up a thought of my
own and go so far as to express it I am always challenged. The challenge is, do not think that way. The
challenger is my wife.
Life would be so much easier, not to mention less
stressful, if I just would quit thinking my own thoughts.
It is when I am thinking my own thoughts that I get
into trouble. Life would be so much easier if I allowed
someone else to think my thoughts for me. After all,
isn’t that why men get married? Why women get married still baffles me.
Getting back to my moment of complaining. “I can’t
believe,” I muttered, “it’s so hot today.” To which, my
wife said, “Don’t you know it’s summer? And don’t you
know that it’s supposed to be hot during the summer?”
I did know that but it did not make the heat any more
bearable. Then she said something that rather confused me. I have been confused before. Confusion is a
familiar territory to me. But this confusion was different.
“If,” my wife said rather sternly, “you can’t stand the
heat get out of the kitchen.”
What the kitchen had to do with it being hot outside is way beyond my pay scale. There was a brief
moment when I almost threw caution to the wind and
asked my wife what she meant by that comment. Boy,
am I glad I didn’t.
I make it a practice to stay as far away from the
kitchen as possible, especially when my wife is present. There is something about a kitchen that makes me
rather nervous to the point of dropping her favorite cup
and having it break all over the floor. I stay out of the
kitchen, heat or no heat.
“If I remember correctly,” my wife said as she stared
at me rather intently, “a few months ago you were complaining about how cold it was.” She was right. It was
not but a few months ago, I was complaining that it was
so cold outside that I just could not bear it.
“You’re going to have to make up your mind.” That
was a serious admonition from her. For her to tell me
to make up my mind sends some very contradictory
messages to me. After all, she is forever making up my
mind for me.
She seems to know exactly what I want at the restaurant and before I can get a word in edgewise or otherwise, she has ordered for me. I’m not complaining.
She knows exactly what I want.
“Either,” she continued, “it’s too hot or it’s too cold.
Now make up your mind.”
I smiled demurely in her direction and nodded in the
affirmative. Not wanting to further the conversation I
whispered very gently, “Yes, dear.” It concluded our
tête-à-tête.
Later on in the evening, we were watching television. It was the local news and special report of the
day had to do with the record heat wave across our
country. “It’s been a long time,” the weatherman said,
“since we’ve seen temperatures this high. Boy, is it hot
out there.”
I glanced in her direction as covertly as possible and
noticed she was staring at me, just daring me to say
something.
There is a time to say something and then sometimes something should not be said at all. I concealed
my infectious grin as much as possible knowing that
someone was watching me. Under my breath I whispered, “I can’t believe it’s so hot today.”
After all, it is summer and it is supposed to be hot.
I just believe that everybody has the right to complain
about the weather. I also believe that some people have
the right not to hear me complain about the weather.
It is a well-noted mark of wisdom to know when to
speak and when not to speak.
Solomon in the Old Testament had it right when
he said, “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is
counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed
a man of understanding” (Proverbs 17:28 KJV).
So, this is summer, but you did not hear it from me.y.

Library will be funded by
Rotary Club of Burney-Fall
River in partnership with

Named the Rotary International Children’s Corner,
the $25,000 project is
funded by $10,000 from the
local club and a $15,000
matching grant received
from the district and TRF.
“Rotarians are excited
to support the new Burney
Public Library. Literacy is a
core value to Rotarians and
the children’s corner offers
local youngsters the opportunity to benefit from special
library programs away from
adult sections,” said Bill
Campbell, club president.
In addition to new children’s programs, the section will be an after school
safe haven for “latch-key”
children because the library
will be located less than a
mile from Burney Elementary School.
The new library will be
located in the former Intermountain Physical Therapy
building on Main Street in
downtown Burney.
“This $25,000 grant is a
real boost for our Capital
Campaign,” said Melanie
Kerns, president of Friends
of the Intermountain Libraries, Inc. (FOIL).
“With the $50,000 commitment from FOIL, and
a $7,500 grant from the
Burney Regional Community Fund of the Shasta
Regional Community Foundation, and all of the donations and pledges from
individuals, our coffers are
beginning to fill,” she said.
However, we are still in
need of funds and would
like to encourage other
service organizations and
businesses to join us in
this effort to bring a firstclass library to Main Street
Burney,” Kerns said.
The children’s corner
project fulfills three Rotary
Foundation core values –
literacy, community development and child health.
Campbell noted the
club’s longtime literacy
commitment by annually
giving every third grade student in Burney, Fall River
and Bieber elementary
schools a dictionary. The
local club has been doing
this since 1997.
In the new library, children sized bookshelves,
tables and chairs will be
purchased for the children’s
corner.
A floor graphic featuring
a river theme with seating,
play and floor furnishings
will highlight the area.
Members of the Fall
River High School Interact
Club will join local Rotarians to paint walls and the
floor theme, assemble and
install furniture and bookshelves, and place books
on the shelves.
During the library’s grand
opening, Rotarians and
Interact members will hold
a special dedication in the
Rotary International Children’s Corner involving 50
to 100 local children from
Intermountain area communities.
A plaque containing the
Rotary International logo
and children’s corner name
will be unveiled during the
ceremony.
This project caps three
consecutive years of grants
awarded to the local club
and supported by the district
and TRF totaling $35,000.
The local club matched
the grants to donate
$25,000 in 2014-2015 to
the Mayers Memorial Hospital ambulance.
In 2015-2016, the club
donated $15,000 to the Fall
River Joint Unified School
District for technology and
signage upgrades.
Local Rotarians contributed nearly $10,000 to the
Rotary Foundation during
the year ending June 30.
In three years, $5,000
will be returned to the district to award grants in
2018-2019 Rotary year.
The annual Fireworks In
February fundraising dinner
replenishes the club’s coffers to support major projects and numerous regular
community and educational
service projects.
The 2017 Fireworks In
February dinner is Saturday, Feb. 4.
The annual Burney Basin
Days fireworks display at
Burney High School football
field is the club’s second
major annual project.
Additional projects are
the annual speech contest, mentoring elementary
school children, awarding
scholarships sending students to leadership camps
and sports camps.

The blooms are located
near the boat launch ramps
but wind and currents may
move the bloom throughout
the lake.
The presence of toxins
has not been confirmed
as toxin testing is currently
underway.
Until toxin testing results
are completed, residents
and recreational water
users of Lake Britton are
urged to use caution and
avoid getting in the water or
letting dogs swim in or near
these bloom areas, noted
water quality staff.
The following precautions are from the water
quality staff.
Blue-green algae can
pose health risks, particularly to children and pets.
We urge people to choose
safe activities when visiting Lake Britton and recommend that people and
their pets avoid contact
with water in locations with
blooms, and avoid swallowing or inhaling water spray
in an algae bloom area.
The algae bloom can
appear as blue-green,
white or brown foam, scum
or mats that can float on the
water’s surface and accumulate along the shoreline
and boat ramp areas.
Recreational exposure to
toxic blue-green algae can
cause eye irritation, allergic skin rash, mouth ulcers,
vomiting, diarrhea, and cold
and flu-like symptoms.
Liver
failure,
nerve
damage and death have
occurred in rare situations
where large amounts of
contaminated water were
directly ingested.
Pets can be especially
susceptible since they tend
to drink the water and lick
their fur after going in the
water.

to view 8 of the wonderful
gardens in the Big Valley
area.
A visit to Big Valley Nursery netted you a map of the
included gardens and an
icy cold bottle of water.
There were also three
types of yummy cookies to
sample.
Don and Sue Colvin
have an eclectic garden in
Bieber.
They have added rusty
accents throughout their
yard with several unique
pieces of farming equipment.
Lovely seating areas of
shade and interesting planters.
Don’s collection of hand
tools and pieces and parts
adorn two walls for a great
viewing opportunity.
Russ and Helen Hawkins
have a beautifully manicured yard with two waterfall water features and
numerous planting beds of
wonderful color.
They also have added
a raised bed vegetable
garden that is producing
wonderful veggies already.
They have a high class
outdoor entertaining area
including food prep, bar and
fire pit. A large grass area is
a great setting for events of
all kinds and their view of
the area is panoramic.
Andy and Helen Albaugh
have created a beautiful
pocket of serenity.
All sorts of items have
been used as planting containers creating whimsical
touches throughout. A seating area around back featuring pallet furniture and is
calm and inviting.
Their fenced garden
area is large and hopefully
deer proof.

The wonderful shots of
color are intense and lovely.

Neva’s eye for a junking bargains has given her

have used large rocks as
accents around their yard.
An old sandbox turned
fairy garden is a magical
area, as is the fairy garden
in the old Webber BBQ and
the secret bird nest in the
wreath. An eye for interesting accents has worked
well in this calming place.
Lou and Martha Haas
have taken established old
trees and built around them
to create a beautiful getaway.
A large fenced vegetable garden area with great
ideas for sheltering and
shading.
Pockets of plantings,
some brought from the
Tahoe area.
A mound built to cover
the pump house/root cellar
is planted as well, making
this area resemble a hobbit
house with a door behind
the curtain. Each Gardener
helped by giving a tour of
the most interesting parts of
their yard areas.
All gracious and welcoming, willing to answer questions and give information.
Some offered water, coffee
or lemonade as a bonus.

to arrange this tour, and to
the Gardeners who created
these pockets of beauty in
our valley.

assessments and sibling bonding assessments to the County of Shasta.
The selected responder(s) must be a licensed psychologists (“LP”), licensed
clinical social workers (“LCSW”), or licensed marriage and family therapists

following: Individual Psychological Evaluations, Psychotherapy, Adoption
Psychological Evaluations, Parent/Child Bonding, or Sibling Assessments.

A Final Environmental Assessment (FEA) and a draft Decision Notice/Finding Of No Significant Impact (DN/FONSI) for the above project is available for review and opportunity to object. This predecisional objection period is intended to provide those interested in or affected by this action an
opportunity to make their concerns known prior to a decision being made. The project is located in
portions of Township (T) 33 and 34 North (N), Range (R) 6 East (E), Sections 1-2 and 11-13; R7E,
Section 6; T34N, R6E, Sections 25, 27, and 34-36; and R7E, Sections 30-31, in Lassen County,
California. Copies of the FEA and draft DN/FONSI are available at the Hat Creek Ranger District office and on the project website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/projects/lassen/landmanagement/projects.
The Responsible Official, Russel D. Hays, intends to select the proposed action, which includes the
salvage of windthrown trees within the Halls Flat project area, which consists of approximately 1,497
acres on National Forest System lands. Salvage would be accomplished through utilization of groundbased logging equipment, favoring the use of low-impact harvest techniques. Additional information
regarding these environmental documents and/or the predecisional administrative review process

Opportunity to Object: This timber salvage project is subject to the pre-decisional objection process
pursuant to 36 CFR 218, Subparts A & B. It is not subject to the appeal procedures found at 36
