Winners Abound at Universal Cues 2015
ACS Midwest 8-Ball Championships
A record 813 individual ACS league members trekked to the popular Riverside Resort &
Casino in Riverside IA, January 15-18, 2015, to vie for $46,965 in prize money at the
Universal Cues 2015 ACS Midwest 8-Ball Championships. The thirteen divisions of play
broke down as follows:
Jerrod Frideres (Fort Dodge, IA) marched undefeated through a tough 42-player Men’s
Advanced 8-Ball Singles field, outlasting Ryan Behnke (Farley, IA) 6-2 in the one-set
finals! On the distaff side – the Women’s Advanced 8-Ball Singles - Tina Larsen
(Portage IN) outlasted a veteran field of 19 to defeat Jessica James (Lombard, IL) after a
previous loss to James…in a two set finals 5-1, 5-1 for the title.
In Open 8-Ball Singles action, Greg Knight (Marion, IA) bested a field of 174 players to
take the men’s crown – outdueling Johnny Kerr (Coal City, IL) in a two-set nail biter;
while Cathy Harness (Silvis, IL) needed only one set to take down Michelle Read
(Godley, IL) 3-2 for the women’s laurels in the 77-player division.
In the handicapped 9-Ball Singles, Scott Hargens (Cedar Rapids, IA) clipped Whitey
Walker (Burlington, IA) 6-5 for the Men’s title in a 128-man field; and Scott was joined
on the podium by the Women’s champion Kelly Hotchkiss (Portage IN) who outpointed
Dee McGrath (Washington, IL) 5-3 in the finals of a 16-player field! In the handicapped
Scotch Doubles 8-Ball division, the duo of Eric Naretto & Rae Nargaard (IL)
completed their undefeated run over the 22-team field with a 4-3 finals decision over Paula
Reeder & Justin Plumb (MO/IA).
The event sported 192 total 4-person teams, and the Advanced 8-Ball Team divisions
featured “Gravy Train” (IA) [Jerry, Adam, Ryan and Chad Behnke] besting “Leisure
Time Billiards” (IL) [Dwaine Bowman, Jamey Bowman, Frank DeCastecker and Ron
Martin] in a one-set finals of a star-studded 18-team field; while the hot- seat team of
“Girls Behaving Badly” (IA) [Paula Kelley, Karla Chorny, Carla Dahl, Dawn
Spencer and Laura Hargens] weathered a finals first-set 2-9 shellacking from challenger
“Just Make It” (IL) [Joan Livingston, Christine Holtz, Tina Larsen, and Kristin Castaldo]
and comfortably claimed the deciding set for the stand-out title performance in the 14team division.
The 97-team Men’s Open 8-Ball Team division was highlighted by the undefeated team
of “Boardwalk” (IL) [Duke Shaw, James Goldring, Scott Franklin, Don Lawson and
Josh Franklin] surviving a loss in the first set of the finals to challenger “ERO
Speedwagon” [Jason Welker, Chris Kouris, Michael Goodman and Jeff Hawks], but
recovering in a tight deciding set for the title! In the 41-team Women’s Open 8-Ball
Team division, undefeated “Shock and Awe” (IL) [Jamie Strezo, Amy Krogh, Debbie
Gleason and Gina Scavelli] took the same route, surviving to challenger “MCL Girls”
(IL) [Lisa Wiseman, Amanda Munsell, Dawn Franklin and Tawni Emert] in the deciding
set to claim the crown!
The ACS would like to thank the title sponsor of the event – Universal Cues, the Riverside
Casino & Golf Resort for its support and outstanding hospitality, and apparel sponsor Iowa
Sports Center apparel. The event was directed by Gary & Shelly Benson and John Maestry
under the auspices of High Country Promotions, and the players especially enjoyed the
online tournament software service that updated all viewers on placement, schedules and
upcoming matches – the same tournament software that is used at the upcoming Universal
Cues ACS Nationals at the Tropicana Casino in Las Vegas, May 9-15. Special thanks as
well to ACS referees Cecil Messer, Bob Ball, Sam Ball, and Tom Fankhauser, and to the
equipment crew of Mike Peiffer, Jeremy Bush, Billy Hyde and Shane Lee. Complete
