Stealers Tournament
The Big Valley Stealers held their
tournament over the weekend with 17
teams participating. Unfortunately, Big
Valley was only represented by the host
team with other teams coming from
Stettler, Red Deer, Calgary, and Rocky
Mountain House.
There were some excellent
competitions in the playoff rounds,
notably the Super Swamper Vampires
(known as the Greiner team) were edged
out of the A semis by the Jager Bombers
with a score of 8 -7. As well, the Stealers
were closely matched with the Mitts &
Balls team in their semi and managed to
come out on top with a score of 8 – 7.
The Stealers went toe-to-toe with the
Jager Bombers in the final as the score
see-sawed back and forth until the
Stealers got the upper hand in the 5th
inning to go on to win 11 – 6.
It was good to see some of our
locals come out and support the
tournament. As well, our thanks to Lorne
Parkins for once again doing an excellent
job cutting the diamonds.
Historical Notes
Big Valley Historical Soc. Notes:
Train time volunteers last
weekend were: Len Waters (three times)
Margaret Levesque, Rod Miller (three times),
Don Lane,Don Kent (twice), Edna Sugden, Bob
Spence, Trudy Spence, Dorothy Annable, Joanne
Murphy, Dave Roux, Allan Johnston, Florence
Johnston, Keith Campbell, “Curly” Reischman
(three times). Please let me know if I missed
you.
During the next six days we have five
trains: Thursday, August 16th and Friday, Aug.
17th are both steam powered and both arrive
about 4:10 and depart about 6:00; Saturday,
Aug. 18th is the first day of the Free-mo model
train exhibition (down at the Agriplex) with the
steam train arriving about 4:10 and departing
about 6:30; Sunday, Aug. 19th is the second
day of the Free-mo event and the steam train
arrives about 12:40 and leaves about 2:45. On
Tuesday, Aug 21st we welcome a diesel
powered Chartered Train full of Girl Guides. With
charters it is difficult to be precise about times
but they plan to arrive here between 12:10 and
12:40. Departure time is estimated to be
sometime after 3:00. This is sort of an
“orienteering” outing for the Guides and they
will be challenged to locate specific structures,
machines, businesses, historic landmarks, etc.
and answer questions about them.
Some more donations toward our
Museum expansion building have recently come
in. Thanks to: Rev. Harold (aka “Dick”) Hunt
($200.00); Frontier General Store (Yunho & Jin
for $100.00 plus $50.00 credit voucher),
Doreen Toker (in the under $100.00 category).
I’ll publish a full list of financial donations soon.
I’ll also soon publish that long-promised list of
others who have helped us out so far, directly or
indirectly, financially or physically, with the
project.
We thank Samantha Watts for her
dedication and valued service as a summer
employee, in our Museum. We also thank the
employee, in our Museum. We also thank the
federal government for providing the grant that
paid much of her wages. We wish “Sam” all the
best as she goes back to University. As we are
now down to only one “summer employee” ,
(Jana Kiemele) our Museum will be closed on
Mondays and Tuesdays for the rest of the
month except that anyone from our core of
faithful volunteers will gladly open the Museum
upon request. We gratefully acknowledge that
funding for much of Jana’s wages comes from
our provincial government through STEP
(Summer Temporary Employment Program).
Never being one to be modest, I’m
going to “toot my own horn” by announcing
that I have just received an official letter from
the office of the Lieutenant Governor of
Alberta advising me that I have been
“selected by the Governor General of Canada
to receive the Caring Canadian Award”. The
presentation will be made by the Honorable
Donald Ethell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta,
at Government House, Edmonton, this August
28th at 2:30 p.m. I understand that I am one
of six Albertans to receive this honor this year.
I am deeply indebted to Shawn Smith, of
Camrose (and Canadian Northern Society
fame) for nominating me for the award.
ISZATSO:
The reason there will never be a winner
in the battle of the sexes is .... there is too much
fraternizing with the enemy.
Insanity is hereditary. You get it from
your children.

The annual Ralph Klaus Memorial Golf Tournament, sponsored by Ralph's son Larry and wife Kathy,
took place on Saturday, Aug. 11. For many years Ralph was very dedicated to this community and never
hesitated in volunteering his time to help make this little community what it is. In later years he was very
involved in the Senior Centre and in the building phase of what we enjoy now. He maintained the golf course for
years and kept it to a very high standard thus it was very fitting that a tournament be held to honour and
remember his efforts.
The day started off with a breakfast at the Hall with Lloyd's special pancakes, Lorne's scrambled eggs
and Bill's sausages and ham. Kent Butterfield drew up the teams and eight teams teed off to vie for getting their
names put on the commemorative plaque. Under beautiful skies, no mosquitos, and a gentle cooling breeze we
couldn't ask for a better day. When all the scores were tallied up it seems Kent didn't rig the teams, as
competition was close and Curt Watts, with Lynne Palmer, Bill Ridley, and Sandra King prevailed.
We then all met back at the Hall for a steak and chicken barbeque supper prepared by Bill and Crew.
After supper Larry and Kathy handed out prizes and presented Curt and his team with the commemorative
plaque. Oodles of hole prizes and door prizes were given out and a 50/50 draw took place that was scooped by
Joan Klaus. Larry's cousin, Bernard, was overheard saying he bought the winner but lamented that he probably
wouldn't see the winnings.
This golf tournament to remember Ralph is always an outstanding time and will be held again next
year at the same approximate time frame. Kathy or Larry meet everyone at hole five where snacks are always
on the agenda. One cannot emphasize enough on how much effort and to what lengths this fine couple goes to
make this tournament a success. Mark it on next year’s calendar.
Each year Larry and Kathy donate to a worthy cause in Big Valley. This year they chose to contribute
to the building fund for the Tool Museum that the Historical Society is raising funds for. Again, many thanks to
them for their continued support of this community. Ralph would be extremely proud to see his legacy carry on.

Thank You
I would like to thank everyone who has
helped me out during this difficult
time;
the phone calls, prayers,
flowers, visits, driving, fruit and
housework. I will also need people to
drive me to Red Deer at times. This
really means a lot to someone who
doesn’t play well with others.
Thank you

The Bull Whisperer
Haying is underway on a big scale these
days and silageing has started also. Grain
combining will be underway soon if not already
started by some farmers.
The Ralph Klaus Golf Tournament was
held on Saturday and the winner was the
Samuel Watts team with a score of 7 under.
The annual ball tournament was held on
Saturday and Sunday. By the number of trailers
and tents it must have been a sellout.
The rodeo circuit took in Strathmore a
week ago and Devon Mezei took second place
in bull riding. Kelly and Robyn had bulls there
and they all bucked good.
I have some fresh veggies from our
garden, but have had to also visit the farmers
market for peas and beans. Our garden was
not very good this year. I still have a green
thumb when it comes to growing tomatoes as I
have a good crop again this year.
