Richmond-West Pins
Next Generation
of Nurses
By: Cassandra Peterson, CRIW
The nursing pinning ceremony is a timehonored nursing school tradition.
The
pinning represents an individual’s official
initiation into the sisterhood and brotherhood
of nurses. Centura College-West recognizes
and welcomes: Damika Brown, Renee Brown,
Cassidy Humphrey, Moshe Z. Levi, Takia R.
Paige, and Zqueenya Wilson as students who
have completed a rigorous and physically
demanding nursing program. These students
were pinned on December 12, 2012 at the
Centura West Nursing pinning ceremony. In
addition, congratulations to all the students of
this class for passing all the Content Mastery
examinations. These tests are designed to
prepare students for the NCLEX (National
Council Licensure Examination), which is an
examination for the licensing of nurses in the
United States. ■

Norfolk Nursing Students Visit Virginia Wesleyan College
BY KATHY HUBBARD, CNOR
The third semester nursing (PN) students at Centura College in Norfolk
had the opportunity to go on a field trip with their Maternal-Newborn
instructor to Virginia Wesleyan College (VWC) in November. The
instructor, Kathy Hubbard, volunteers outside of work for a consumer
birth education group called Birth Matters Virginia, and was invited to
host a facilitated discussion for Ms. Sharon Payne’s students at VWC.
Ms. Payne teaches Human Sexuality at VWC and is an advocate for
women’s rights and informed, safe birthing options. The Centura and
VWC students separately viewed the documentary fi lm, “The Business
of Being Born” to prepare them for the discussion and met at the VWC
campus. The goal of the discussion for the Centura PN students was
to focus on the role of the nurse in supporting low intervention, high
touch labor and delivery practices.
The students from both colleges engaged in a critique of the fi lm. The
Centura students, who had completed their clinical rotation in a local
hospital’s labor and delivery/postpartum/nursery unit, recounted
the events they witnessed during their rotation. As student nurses,
they were able to connect the “why” and the science they saw in the
fi lm, with medical theory, but were left “shocked” at the emotional
outcome for many of the parents in the fi lm, who were clearly
uneducated about the process of birth. They spoke openly about the
benefits, risks and differences between home, birth center and hospital
birth, and helped educate the VWC students about the anatomy and
physiology of pregnancy and childbirth. The Centura
students approached their college with the training
Events
and experiences they had at Centura and realized that made them the
medical “experts” in the discussion.
According to Centura students, the benefits of the outing were
profound. They enjoyed the interaction with peers from another school
and discipline, the new perceptions they gained by the experience
and the lasting emotions elicited by the film. Discussions about the
field trip continued for several days after, and throughout the school
childbirth related topics on nursing theory and interventions could be
heard, “nurse to nurse.” ■

Virginia Beach Campus Celebrate the U.S. Constitution
BY JEFFERY BARBOUR, CVAB
The Virginia Beach Campus of Centura College observed U.S. Citizenship Day and Constitution
Week, September 17th – 20th commemorating the original signing of the U.S. Constitution
held on September 17, 1781 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Our educational program is about
learning more about our single most important document of self-government in the United
States. Throughout the week, there were many library activities and campus-wide opportunities
designed for everyone to explore the importance of the United States Constitution.
On Monday, we showed the movie, “A More Perfect Union: America Becomes a Nation” in
the student lounge with a full audience of students from various programs. They also enjoyed
popcorn, compliments of Ms. Mary Morgan, student advisor. The students answered trivia
questions which correlated with the events of the movie. From the correct entries that the students
submitted, two drawings were held. Anita Westmoreland, Computer Network Management
student for the morning session and Adena Johnson, Medical Assisting student for the evening
session were the lucky winners!
Visiting the library during that week, many students participated in library scavenger hunt trivia
and completed word search puzzles. The winners of the library scavenger hunt trivia drawings
were: Business students, Gregory Taylor and James Ruckman. The winner drawn for the word
searches was Medical Assisting student, Sara Graves!
MEDICAL ASSISTING STUDENT
AND WORD SEARCH WINNER,
SARA GRAVES
Additionally, Mr. Barbour, school’s librarian, placed an exhibit on display in the library which
included memorabilia, representing the historical events leading up to and including the
formation of our present-day U.S. Constitution. The students were encouraged to visit the library
to see the special exhibit and to locate the “missing link” within the display case. Christina
Piercy, Business student, responded correctly identifying the missing stars on the U.S. flag within the display!
Overall, the goal was for students, faculty, and staff to recognize the importance of our United States Constitution and the freedoms which we
share as citizens of the United States of America. A special thanks goes to everyone who participated in the educational program. ■

Tidewater Tech
Continues to Grow
Relationship with
Shipbuilder BY PRENTIS HERNDON, TTT
Huntington Ingalls/Newport News Shipyard visited Tidewater Tech
(Trades) on Wednesday, November 28th. That visit marked the 3rd
visit to the school since the shipbuilding giant decided to form a
partnership with Trades back in September 2012. Huntington Ingalls/
Newport News Shipbuilding has hired numerous Tidewater Tech
Trades students from the Auto Technician, Building Maintenance &
Repair, HVAC, and Welding programs.
On November 28th, Huntington Ingalls/Newport News Shipyard
Recruiter, Steven Dennis, visited Trades for the monthly presentation
at the school where he explained what the recruiters look for, how to
successfully complete applications on their website and what type
of training and testing is given. Dennis advised students to inform
the Career Services Coordinator once they’ve applied online, so that
their names can be forwarded to the Huntington Ingalls recruiter to
be pulled from the website for reviewing.
On Thursday, November 29th, Trades received a visit from three
Ingalls Shipbuilding representatives; R. Carlos Lett, Manager Talent
Acquisition and Stephanie Burdett and Analee Marshall, Staffing
Representatives. The three visitors were very impressed by the school’s
campus and welding lab. After speaking with Welding Coordinator,
John McCarthy, Lett was impressed and convinced that Tidewater
Tech welding students are learning what they need to succeed in a
company like Ingalls Shipbuilding. There were two presentations
given by Ingalls Shipbuilding on Thursday to accommodate both day
and night students. Both sessions had a large attendance by graduates

Recipe for Success
BY MICHELLE TOLON, CPEN
ll
If you ffollow
the Centura recipe, things will go your way! As
a Medical Assistant student at Centura College Peninsula, I
defi nitely succeeded at my task, which was to be the best and
always give my all. On June 11, 2011, I began on my endeavor
to obtain my Associates Degree in Applied Science with a major
in Medical Assisting. While I was there the power system
was drilled in me, (prepared, organized, works, evaluate, and
rethink) this system was a platform which I attributed to my
success. By being prepared, organized and always ready to
work, this process conditioned me into becoming the ultimate
professional.
I was offered a position at a Chiropractor office two weeks into
my Externship. Although, this office has had Medical Assisting
students in to past, I was the fi rst Medical Assistant to be
hired. I was given the opportunity to share my success with
my fellow classmates during a recent assembly. While speaking
to my classmates, I informed them of the importance of being
involved, such as being a member of the National Technical
Honor Society, a member of the Student Council and a mentor
to students. I was always professionally dressed, punctual, and
ready and willing to learn the medical specialty. The proof is in
the pudding if you want
it you go get it (effort
produces success).
My instructors gave
me the right tools and
I landed on my feet. I
do not plan on stopping
here. I will be enrolling in
Hampton
University
School of Pharmacy. My
Doctor’s office is more
than happy to work with
me in continuing my
education. ■

All Smiles at Midlothian’s Dental Assistant Open House
On November 2nd, the Midlothian campus
hosted its fi rst Dental Assistant open house
for prospective students. Faculty members
and current students also participated in
the day-long event, which gave the attendees
their fi rst glimpses at the campus’ state-ofthe-art dental equipment and facilities.
Industry vendors such as Benco Dental, a
full-service distributor of dental supplies
and equipment, and Coltene-Whaledent, a
global leader in dental consumables such as
adhesives and restoratives, exhibited their
wares, while other participants such as area
dental professionals and educators from the
Virginia Commonwealth University School
of Dentistry networked with attendees. Free
refreshments were provided throughout
the day, and several participants spun the
Dental Wheel of Destiny to win door prizes
with proceeds from the effort benefitting
the Virginia Dental Association. Even the
Tooth Fairy and Marvin the Molar, the
mascot from Delta Dental, America’s largest
dental benefits carrier, were on hand to
put smiles on people’s faces. All in all, the
prospective students seemed impressed with
the information that they learned about the
benefits of the Midlothian campus’ dental
assistant program. ■

Finds Success in
Norfolk Career
Center
BY ART VICE, CNOR
The Centura College Norfolk Campus
Career Services Office has had another
successful story helping a graduate find
employment in their field. It started with
the initial job openings with Med Temps,
a government contractor for local dental
positions at military health clinics, and
then it moved to assisting graduates in
completing the applications and getting it
to the employer. This was in collaboration
with Dr. Cindy Giles, Dental Program
Coordinator and the dental instructors
in providing Letters of Reference to Med
Temps for our graduates. Doris Jessamy,
an August 2012 graduate from the Dental
Assistant diploma program, was recently
hired by Med Temps, for a full time,
high paying Dental Assistant position
at the Sewells Point Dental Clinic in
Norfolk. She was excited to get into the
government sector. She exclaimed in the
Career Services Office, “this is the kind of
job I was looking for!” ■

Chesapeake’ s Holiday Spirit
C

BY JAIMIE BUSTER, CCHE
At Centura Chesapeake, the holiday spirit is spreading through the halls.
This
Th
Thi
his Dece
December we are hosting several events to encourage this infectious cheer
amongst our students and community. Times are tough, so Centura took charge to help brighten
the season.
National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) members were busy working under Santa’s payroll.
The students organized a toy and clothes drive for 10 Centura families. All donations were
disbursed to those families in need. From Dora the Explorer to Hot Wheels, NTHS is fulfilling
many Christmas wishes of little ones.
On December 11th, Santa stopped by the school’s Learning Resource Center. He posed with
students and their children for pictures to help spice up those annual Christmas cards. FBLA,
our business club, will have their second chili bar of the year to fill those empty tummies. NTHS
and Medical Assisting students will be joining FBLA in the Student Lounge for ornament and
cookie decorating.
In order to let the cheer trickle into
the classrooms, students and staff
are decking their classroom doors
in hopes of winning the second
annual door decoration contest.
Through these various activities,
students and staff are creating the
warm fuzzy feeling that only the
holidays bring. ■

Tidewater Tech Continues
to Grow Relationship with
Shipbuilder continued
and current students. The presentation included
a video, the Staffing Reps assisted students with
online applications in the school’s library and a
written test for the welding students. The students
who did well on the written test will be flown
down to Pascagoula, Mississippi, to take a simple
welding test. The students who do well on the
welding test will be offered employment at Ingalls
Shipbuilding of Pascagoula, MS.
Ingalls Shipbuilding will be returning to
Tidewater Tech Trades in February 2013. ■
Helping our student is what the Charleston
campus of Centura College is all about.
We do this in many ways, but our personal
favorite is the Centura food bank. Yes, we
have a food bank right here on campus
that is available to our students whenever
it is needed.
The food bank is something we have had
on campus for years. Th is is a way of giving
back and helping our students at the same
time. Student Service Coordinator, Tracy
Owens, has built a relationship with
Celebration Station in North Charleston,
which allows Centura to partner with a
non-profit organization, and be eligible to
shop at the Lowcountry Food Bank.
Mrs. Owens and Crystie Melton, Campus
Bursar, go to the food bank to shop and
pick up ordered items. Items range from
diapers to rice and everything in between.
You never know what will be available.
Students see Mrs. Owens to make sure
they meet the criteria.
The food bank has been a great help to our
students and it has been an asset to our
campus. Despite all the hard work that
goes into keeping the items current and up
to date, it has been worth the effort to see
the relief on students’ faces to know that
they can count on Centura. ■

New Personal and Professional Development
Courses at the Online Campus
When Angeline Ryan was ready to start her
own photography business in Suffolk, she
knew her way around her camera but also
knew she lacked some necessary skills. The
Introduction to Photoshop CS6 class through
Centura College was exactly what she needed.
“I wanted to make sure I started off on
the right track, and I knew I needed a light
editing program that would allow me to make
all the necessary edits to produce the highest
quality pictures,” Angeline says. “It was a class
designed for absolute beginners, the perfect
level for me, and it was just what I was looking
for in order get these foundational skills for
my business.” Best of all, her investment
has already paid off. “Every time I edit a
photograph, I’m using the skills I learned
through this online course,” she adds.
The value of education is immeasurable,
whether it’s for career advancement or for personal
growth, and Centura College is leading the way
in Hampton Roads with its innovative online
personal and professional development courses.
Long established as a local educational leader,
Centura offers students e-courses that allow for
flexible class schedules, affordable tuition, and
the opportunity to learn from instructors with
national recognition and real-world experience.
With more than 300 courses ranging
from Accounting and Finance to College
Readiness, Computer Applications, Design
and Composition, Health Care and Medical,
Language and Arts, Law and Legal, Personal
Development Teaching and Education,
Technology and Writing and Publishing
virtually anyone can get a leg up on the
competition, learn new skills or just expand
their horizons.
Ashley Forish West, Director of Business
Development at Centura College is excited to be
a part of their expansion into non-traditional
classes. “I love that we offer online solutions
for those looking to get a new job or want the
necessary skills to advance in their current
position,” Ashley says. “We are all busy, and
our online classes allow men and women to get
additional training in their professional field or
to pursue a personal goal, while maintaining
their current job or home life routine.”
Jennifer Stroop, who works with a volunteer
fire department, looked to Centura when she
needed to know how to write grants. “The
online course was great because I could work
on it around my busy schedule. I wanted to
learn what grant writing involved, where to

go to find available grants, and where to go
with my questions,” she says. Pleased with the
knowledge she gained during her six-week
course, Jennifer says she is excited to help her
volunteer fire department get much-needed
funding. “I plan to look into more ways to
raise more money for the fire department,
and I definitely plan to take another course
through Centura College,” Jennifer says.
“The online course was great
because I could work on it around
my busy schedule. I wanted to learn
what grant writing involved, where
to go to find available grants, and
where to go with my questions.”
Benjamin Camras, a graduate student at
Virginia Commonwealth University, knows
the workplace can be a competitive arena. To
prepare for an upcoming project, he enrolled in
Introduction to InDesign online. “I have been
extremely pleased with my experience. The
quality of instruction has been excellent and the
instructor has always been attentive, thorough,
and encouraging,” Camras recounts. ■
