Fall 2014
Publisher’s GREETING
The month of November, for me, seems
to be a time of reflection and goal setting.
We head into the month with a sigh of
relief that Halloween is over. Few of us
follow ancient rituals of remembering
the dead during this holiday but it does
set a certain tone: remembering and
celebrating what has happened in our lives.
November gets rolling with elections. A time for everyone
to reflect on the past year and make their voice known
for what they hope to see happen in the coming year.
Although our favorites may not always win, voting is an
important right that we all share. I hope you got out and
voted.
When the election commercials end, the media rolls us
right into Thanksgiving and Christmas. A time of giving thanks and creating family traditions. Now known as
the “holiday season”, this two month span is the perfect
time to get involved in helping those in need - be it family
members or community - there is always someone who
can use a helping hand during this season.
Finally as the year’s end edges closer, I encourage you
to come up with some non-traditional new year’s goals.
Maybe something that goes beyond a goal for you and
actually effects someone else in a positive way. Just a
thought.
In case you’re new to the neighborhood, welcome! The
Ashwood Creek COURIER publishes four times a year:
February, May, August and November. If you have any
suggestions, please contact me at [email protected] or your newsletter editor, Paul Lehman at

HOLIDAY LIGHTS RECYCLING
The Naperville Park District announces its fifth annual holiday lights recycling program in partnership
with Elgin Recycling, beginning Nov. 17, 2014 and
ending Feb. 13, 2015.
Residents and businesses are invited to bring their
old, nonworking lights to any of three locations
throughout the District.
“Over the past two years we have recycled more than one ton of lights, keeping them out of the landfill,” said Director of Marketing and Communications
Sameera Luthman.
The following types of lights will be accepted: Mini-lights, C-7 lights, C-9
lights, Rope lights, LED lights and extension cords. All colors and lengths will
be accepted. The Park District will receive a rebate of approximately $.15
for each pound of lights recycled, which will be used to support the District’s
ongoing environmental initiatives. The cash reimbursement from the 2013 recycling was applied toward the purchase of educational materials for Knoch
Knolls Nature Center.
The following Park District locations will be accepting lights for recycling:
• Knoch Knolls Nature Center (Hours: Mon.-Sat., 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Sun.
12:00 noon-5:00 p.m.)
• Alfred Rubin Riverwalk Community Center, 305 W. Jackson Avenue –
Lower Level (Hours: Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. with additional evening
and weekend hours for programs)
• Springbrook Golf Course, 2220 W. 83rd Street (Hours: Mon.-Sun., 8:00
a.m.-3:00 p.m.). Please note that Springbrook Golf Course will be closed
Dec. 24-Jan. 1.

The days of giving traditional fruitcake as a holiday gift has changed
my friends. Grab a fork and taste
the latest flavor - The Coffeecake
Connection has reinvented the way
we taste and share holiday treats.
The best part? It’s all Gluten Free! And Nut Free! And
Preservative Free! And it all tastes delicious!
Originally established as a corporate gifting company, The
Coffeecake Connection Company has expanded from
traditional coffee cakes to cookies, brownies, mini-muffins
and even ready-to-bake batter. Each treat comes beautifully packaged and hand tied with ribbons and can even
include a personalized card.
Christine Welch developed her recipe from seven simple
ingredients - think butter, milk and eggs. Her old-school
cakes take on a flavor all their own when she mixes in
fruits, spices and chocolates to create delicious items like
Apple Caramel Cinnamon or Raspberry White Chocolate.
The days of needing to eat gluten free but finding nothing
at the holiday table are gone. These treats are so amazingly
good that you won’t believe they are really gluten free!
Baked locally in West Chicago these treats can be delivered nationally - your gifts are ready to serve or can be
stored in the freezer for another special event. These coffee cakes are delicious as gifts but you can also order them
for your own family and even for kids lunches.
Homeowner Association readers a special 20% discount

Gardener’s GREEN THUMB
~ Submitted by: The Growing Place
http://www.thegrowingplace.com/
To Protect or Not to Protect?
As winter rapidly approaches, protecting plants from weather and animals
is a common garden task. Here are
some guidelines and techniques.
Trees and Shrubs
Thin barked trees such as maples benefit from tree wrap, especially when
young, to keep critters away and protect from wind and sun damage. Wrap the trunk in a spiral of brown
paper tree wrap from the soil level to the first branches snugly. You
could also use a piece of white plastic corrugated tubing, slit lengthwise. Do not use a black product as the color black heats up in the sun
and can artificially warm the trunk. Remove tree protection in spring
once buds begin to swell.
Tree protection is also important for fruit trees such as apples, cherries and pears, and even crabapples. Young shrubs are also tempting
for rabbits especially fothergilla, burning bush, viburnum, roses and
barberries. A circle of chicken wire, graduated wire fencing or netting
keeps the critters away. Once shrub stems are about the size of your
ring finger, rabbits should avoid them.
Evergreens
Some evergreens, planted in windy or sunny sites may need to be
treated with an anti-transpirant spray. The spray creates a protective
film so that the leaves do not lose as much moisture in the dry winter
wind. Newly planted, broadleaf evergreens and yews that get afternoon winter sun will also benefit from this protection.
For cedar, cypress, juniper and arborvitae, it is important to wait until
late fall. Protect these plants if they are newly planted or are in sunny,
windy sites. Broadleaf evergreens such as boxwood and rhododendron have a different leaf structure, so you can apply the product well
into winter.
To protect Christmas trees, wreaths and roping, spray thoroughly and
allow them to dry before bringing the greens indoors.
Roses
In our area, many of the most popular roses – such as hybrid teas, floribundas, grandifloras, and climbing roses – need some kind of winter
protection. Most of the shrub and species roses (own root grown) are
hardy and do not need extra protection.
• First, clean up the area around the rose.
• Make sure the rose is well watered.
• Do not cut the canes back, but leave them be. Winter damage starts
at the tips and the longer the cane, the better chance of having more
living tissue by spring.
• When the ground is beginning to freeze (usually after three hard
frosts) apply a mound of soil or compost over the base of the rose
or enclose the rose with a collar of chicken wire filled with shredded leaves. Removal of this protection in spring will depend on the
weather.
• To protect from rabbits, a circle of chicken wire works well so they
cannot get at the stems to nibble.

Odd Health Tips:
9
~ www.menshealth.com/mhlists
Change your Name: People with positive initials - ones that spell out things like J.O.Y or
W.O.W. - live nearly 4 1/2 years longer than
people with neutral initials.
According to Energy.gov, you can save about $6 per
year if you replace a 100-watt incandescent with an
Energy Star CFL. Different lightbulbs, including
halogen incandescent bulbs, CFL, and LED lights,
will all save you money, and if you choose to replace
15 traditional incandescent bulbs, you could save
about $50 per year depending on useage.
Accuse others of Taking Your Keys: Research
suggest there is a marked difference between how older
and younger peopple interpret misplacing things. Young
men typically blame someone else while older men usually blame themselves. Remain young, blame someone
else!
Step One Choose lightbulbs based on teh brightness you
need. More lumens for your particular bulb, the brighter
the light it will produce. This may cost more, but you need
enough light in a room for comfort or you end up turning
on more lights.
Scratch the Other Limb: For itchy skin under a cast, try
scratching the same place on the other arm or foot. This
may trick your brain into thinking you’re scratching the
real itch.
Step Two Determine which light has the lowest estimated
energy cost per year. LEDs are the most efficient and then
CFLs and the New Halogen Incandescents are the least
efficient.
Shave your Stache & Sniff Less: Wash a moustach twice a
day with liquid soap if you are prone to allergies. Studies
found that patients who did this used fewer antihistimines
and decongestants, because it gets ride of stuck pollen.
Step Three Check other features such as how the bulb
looks, how long it will last and the Energy Star logo. This
will tell you if the bulb meets minimum efficiency, lifetime, and quality standards.

Ask the EXPERT
~ Jerry Needham, Owner ProEnergy Consultants
www.geneva.proenergyconsultants.com
Avoid the triangle of architect-contractor-homeowner:
There are sometimes is a “lovehate” relationship between
contractors and architects. The
key to a successful is to make
sure they have worked together
and are compatible.
• Good architects can save you more money than their fees.
Look for an architect who has experience, design style and
communication skills that fit your wants and desires and don’t
be bashful. Remember they will be working for you. Listen to
their ideas but don’t let them talk you into something that you
don’t want. Be sure to interview several candidates until you
find the one.
• Don’t confuse a drafter with an architect. Architects provide technical knowledge and can tune dreams and needs into
workable concepts. Drafters record everything on paper. Architects may provide drafting services, but not all drafters are
architects so don’t get this confused.
• Planning makes everything go better. Poor planning leads to
do-overs and they can be expensive because contractors don’t
like change orders and they will make you pay for the aggregation.
Would you rather start without proper planning, take eight
months to finish and go over budget? Would you like to take
a few months to plan and finish in three months coming in
under budget thought so!!!!

Making your dog earn everything
they receive is a great way to establish
yourself as a strong and fair leader.
Try asking your dog to deliver previously trained commands such as sit,
down, stay, or shake, before receiving
food and toys, and before leaving the
house to go have some fun.
When potty training a puppy it is best to put them on a
schedule.
The rule of thumb is a puppy can hold it a maximum of
one hour more than their age in months. For example,
a 3 month old puppy can hold their bladder for up to 4
hours. Allowing them to relieve themselves within this
time frame will decrease the likelihood of accidents and
improve your likelihood of success. Puppies should also
be let out to potty within 10 minutes after they eat, drink,
sleep, or play.
