A Short Survey of Baseball Art

“Whoever wants to know the heart and mind
of America had better learn baseball.”
—Jacques Barzun

The arrival of spring means one thing to many: the beginning of baseball season.
Safe at Home: A Short Survey of Baseball Art celebrates America’s
beloved pastime by bringing the excitement of the stadium into the gallery
through the artwork of both local and national artists. It was a privilege to
co-curate this exhibition with art dealer George Krevsky, who for the past
decade hosted an annual show of baseball art at his San Francisco gallery.
Baseball crosses racial, economic, and generational divides as a game that
provides entertainment in the best of times and comfort during some of the
nation’s toughest moments, including The Great Depression, World War II and
the Civil Rights Movement. It also symbolizes tradition — gathering around the
television or meeting at the stadium to root for our home team. Baseball remains
strongly anchored to the identity and spirit of the American people, and the
artworks in Safe at Home capture the soul and essence of the game.
Safe at Home was funded with a generous grant from the Lesher Foundation
with additional support by the Diablo Regional Arts Association.
