Student Companion
Your quick and easy guide to CCV Burlington
1
Welcome to CCV Burlington!
Welcome to CCV Burlington and to life as a college student!
Welcome to an opportunity for learning and personal growth.
And, finally, welcome to the Student Companion, your quick and
easy guide to CCV Burlington.
Being a college student involves sifting through lots of information. We recommend you read the Student Companion before
you read all the catalogs, handouts, and pamphlets. In this guide,
you won’t find detailed information, but you will find pointers to
more detailed information so you know where to look when you
need it. The Student Companion is short and will give you a
good feel for what you should be thinking and asking about. It
will tell you where to direct your questions, where to find information, as well as important deadlines.
Best of luck!

Instructors
CCV courses are taught by community professionals who bring practical
experience as well as traditional academic qualifications to the classroom. It is common to find a local lawyer teaching Business Law or a
day-care director teaching Child Development. All CCV teachers are
hired on a part-time basis to teach courses for a particular semester.
CCV Burlington has approximately 200 instructors each semester.
Because of the unique nature of our teaching staff, instructors at CCV
don’t have their own office space. You will receive information on how to
best contact your instructor on your course syllabus (see page 15).
Also, you can leave a message for any current CCV Burlington instructor by stopping by the front desk at 119 Pearl Street or calling (802) 865
-4422. Your message will be left in the instructor’s mailbox which is
generally checked weekly.

Academic Resources
Academic Advising
All CCV Burlington students are assigned an academic advisor. Contact
your advisor or make an appointment through the front desk if you
would like to discuss degree programs, course choices, progress during
the semester, or any academic issues that may come up. Advisor
assignments for new students are generally made by the 5th week of
each semester. To find out who your academic advisor is, visit or call
the CCV Burlington front desk. You can also access this information by
logging in to the VSC Portal (https://blackboard.vsc.edu) and viewing
your “Student Profile” in the “VSC Web Services” module. See page 19
for VSC Portal login instructions.
If you have a quick question or an emergency, on-call advisors are also
available to help (no appointment necessary) in the Learning Center
(Room 204A). See page 5 for on-call advising hours.
Learning Labs & Tutoring Services
If you feel you're falling behind or just want that extra boost, help is
available.
The Learning Center:
The Learning Center (Cherry 204) is home to our peer tutors, students
on duty to assist other students with math, computer, writing, research,
and more on a drop-in basis. You can also get help on topics like time
management and other important skills for college students. During the
school year it runs full-time; summer hours will be posted.
Writing Labs:
Writing labs are half hour appointments with a CCV writing instructor
who can help you with any portion of the writing process--from identifying a topic to putting the final touches on a paper. To schedule an
appointment, visit or call the CCV Burlington front desk or the Learning
Center reception desk.
Math Labs:
Math labs are group study and practice sessions led by CCV math
instructors. You can come with specific questions or just attend to listen
and get a little extra practice. No appointment is necessary. For a
schedule of math labs, visit the CCV Burlington website, the front desk,
or the Learning Center.
9
Online Tutoring (http://www.etutoring.org):
All CCV students have access to free online tutoring through
etutoring.org! eTutoring is an online program which currently provides
tutoring services in writing (all subject areas), math (developmental
through calculus), statistics, accounting, chemistry, and anatomy and
physiology. For instructions on logging in, visit the VSC Portal (https://
blackboard.vsc.edu).
Textbooks, Materials, & Pre-class Assignments
Where do I buy my books?
Textbooks for classes at the Burlington site can be purchased at the
University of Vermont’s bookstore (Davis Center, 536 Main Street,
Burlington; (802) 656-3290, http://uvmstore.uvm.edu). Books for all
other CCV courses, including online, are available at
http://www.ccvbookstore.com.
Students are responsible for purchasing their textbooks before classes
start. Loan copies of many textbooks are available on a first come, first
served basis at the Pearl Street reception desk. Loaned books may not
be removed from the CCV Burlington site and students will be billed for
the replacement cost of books that are not returned.
How much do textbooks cost?
Textbook costs vary by course. However, you should plan to pay an
average of $100 per course for your books. If you have trouble purchasing your textbooks, contact the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible.
Do I have materials to buy or homework before class starts?
Some classes will have required pre-class assignments or materials to
purchase before class begins. To find this information, visit the Burlington pre-class information page at http://www.ccv.edu/locations/
burlington/preclass. If your class is not listed, you do not have a preclass assignment or materials to buy. However, you should check this
page often as some materials lists and pre-class assignments are
added close to the first day of classes.
Library
The Hartness Library System is the library for all CCV and Vermont
Technical College (VTC) students and instructors. The books are
housed on the VTC campus in Randolph Center, but CCV students
have access to the library’s entire catalog by logging into our Blackboard website (https://blackboard.vsc.edu ) and clicking on the
Hartness Library tab. You can read or print materials directly from the
online catalog and if you need a book or video, it will be mailed directly
to your home at no charge! To log in, use your CCV username and
10
password (see pg. 19 for instructions).
The Learning Center (Cherry 204) is dedicated to library usage,
research, and assistance and Librarians are there to help. Stop by if you
need assistance using the library system or doing research for class.
Hours of operation are available on page 5. You can also contact a
librarian for assistance by calling the Toll-free Library Line (1-800-4310025) or via email ([email protected]).
The Learning Center (Cherry 204) is also home to tutors, students and
instructors on duty to assist other students with math, computer, writing,
research, and more on a drop-in basis. You can also get help on topics
like time management and other important skills for college students.
During the school year it runs full-time; summer hours will be posted.
Financial Aid
Financial Aid is available in a variety of forms including grants, scholarships, and loans. The first step to getting financial aid is to apply.
Financial aid packets (which include all the paperwork you’ll need) are
available at the CCV Burlington Financial Aid Office or at the front desk.
You can also access web versions of these materials at
http://www.ccv.edu/financial_aid.
Completing the necessary paperwork can be a bit confusing and if you
are under the age of 24, you will need tax information from your
parent(s). Financial Aid Counselors are available to help you through
the process so call or stop by the Financial Aid Office (110 Cherry
Street, 1st floor, 802-859-3023) when you need help.
Applying for financial aid is up to you. Don’t get lose your seat in your
classes because you missed the deadline. If you have questions,
contact the Financial Aid Office. The deadline for applying is generally
10 days before the first day of each semester. Apply once per academic
year and APPLY EARLY! A good guideline is to apply as soon as you
complete your taxes each year. VSAC (Vermont Student Assistance
Corporation) financial aid is on a “first come, first served” basis and can
run out before the deadline.
For information on additional payment options, including payment plans
and options for veterans, visit the payment options webpage at
http://www.ccv.edu/paying_for_college/index.html.

Online Learning Workshops
Interested in taking classes online? All CCV sites offer free Online
Learning Workshops (OLW) for students who want to explore the option
of online courses. At an OLW, you’ll learn how online classes work and
what to expect. You will also learn the tools you need to participate as
well as time management techniques to help you succeed in an online
class. Whether you are already in an online class or considering taking
one, all students are encouraged to attend. Visit the CCV Burlington
front desk for an updated schedule or visit CCV’s Online Learning
website (http://www.ccv.edu/locations/online/index.html) for more
information including web based tutorial for taking online courses.
Accommodations for Persons with Disabilities
CCV is committed to accommodating the needs of students with
documented disabilities in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Students with disabilities are advised and supported by
a Coordinator of Academic Services, who will arrange appropriate
accommodations. It is important that students in need of such accommodations meet early with an ADA Coordinator, preferably prior to the
start of the semester. This allows enough time to create a plan and
communicate it to instructors. If you would like to schedule an appointment with an ADA Coordinator, contact Nicole at [email protected] or
802-865-2459.
Important Publications
CCV prints several materials on an annual or semi-annual basis that are
very important for students. Below is a quick guide to three of these
documents. If you don’t have these already, you can get them at the
CCV Burlington front desk. These documents are also available via the
web at http://www.ccv.edu/publications.
1. Catalog
The CCV Catalog is printed every year. This document includes short
descriptions of all the available courses as well as the current course
requirements for each degree and certificate program.
2. Course Schedule
Course Schedules are printed a few months before each semester
begins. This is where you go to find out when and where specific
courses are being offered so you can plan your schedule for next
semester. You can also view the course schedule, as well as the
number of seats available in specific courses, on the VSC Portal
(https://blackboard.vsc.edu, click on the “VSC Web Services” then
select “Search for Sections”).
14
3. Student Handbook
This document includes facts and policies on all aspects of life at CCV.
Consult the handbook for policies on topics like financial aid, adding and
dropping courses, refunds, sexual harassment, complaint resolution,
academic honesty, and much more.
Don’t forget about your Syllabus!
Another important document is your course syllabus. A syllabus is a
schedule, list of policies, and a general guide that is specific to the
course(s) you are taking. It will also contain contact information for your
instructor. You will receive one during the first few weeks of each of
your classes. We recommend that you keep your syllabi after you have
completed your classes. They may be very valuable in the future,
especially if you plan to transfer to another college.
Dropping/Adding Courses
Before the first day of classes, you can adjust your schedule as long as
the class you want is not full and you are academically eligible for the
course. If you think you need to make a change after a class has
started, you will need to meet immediately with an academic advisor for
her/his permission. Students are not permitted to attend any class in
which they are not enrolled. If you would like to add a class, meet with
an academic advisor as soon as possible. Students are never permitted
to enroll in classes that have already met twice.
If you need to drop a course, you can do so in person at CCV, through
the web at https://blackboard.vsc.edu, or by calling the 24-hour toll free
drop line at 1 (888) 689-8895. Before
dropping a course, you should always
review the Drop Policy and Refund Policy
in the Student Handbook. Ceasing to
attend a class or notifying the instructor
does not constitute a drop and will result in
a failing grade. Withdrawals must be made
before 60% of the course has taken place
(normally the 9th week of a 15-week
semester). For more information on
dropping courses, consult the Student
Handbook.
Dropping a course may have severe
consequences for financial aid students; it
is best to consult with a Financial Aid
advisor at (802) 859-3023 before you stop
attending or drop a class.

Computers
Where can I find a computer?
Room 106 in the Pearl Street building and room 204 in Cherry Street
building are our open computer labs and are available for student use
whenever CCV is open. Also, most computer labs are open to CCV
students when not in use for class purposes. Computers for student use
are available in Pearl 102, 103, 105, and 106 as well as Cherry 200 and
LL9. The MAC lab (Cherry LL16) is only available to students enrolled in
courses meeting in this lab. CCV computers are not available for
recreational purposes (personal e-mail, chatting, games, etc).
How do I log in?
In order to use CCV computers and websites you will need to activate
your username and password. If you are doing so from a CCV site,
have an administrative assistant log you on to a computer. Next, access
CCV’s Blackboard Portal (https://blackboard.vsc.edu) and click on the
link next to “New User.” Activate your account by following the prompts.
You will need your college ID number to complete this process. If you
do not know your college ID click on the link under “What’s My College
ID?” If you are unable to log in, stop by or call the CCV Burlington front
desk for assistance.
Student IDs
Each semester, all registered students receive a CCV Student Identification Card. If you haven’t already received one, stop by the front desk
to pick up yours. Your valid student ID is required for entrance into the
parking garage and may also be used for discounts at some local

have to miss class to feed the meter!

Paul Street (below the 119 Pearl Street building). Your valid CCV

building by the vending machines. There is additional lounge space in
the Cherry Street building in the Learning Center and in the Lower Level

microwave is available in the Pearl Street lounge for student use.
Vending machines are available in both buildings.

areas before doing so. A pay phone is available near the vending
machines at 119 Pearl Street if you are in need of a public telephone.

includes the building interior, parking garage, public entrances, porch
areas and entry stairs. All smoking must be done 50 feet from the
building. Discard cigarette butts responsibly and keep building approaches clear.
