The Institute of Sport and Exercise (ise) and its staff, has a recognised, high-level of
involvement with:

This involvement spans across the areas of academic study, sports performance and
physical activity and health.
In order to demonstrate the high level of staff involvement with these agencies, this
portfolio has been created. This portfolio documents, for review, key organisations that
ise is currently working and liasing with, and the capacity of our staff within these roles.

This extended profile displays ise’s involvement with National Governing Bodies, Professional Governing
Bodies and other external agencies.
4.1 National Governing Bodies (includes regional bodies)
4.1.1 Golf
For more than 10 years, Sports Science Manager Dr Audrey Duncan and Sport
& Exercise Physiologist Helen Weavers have built a substantial reputation for
the delivery of support across the golf performance continuum. This spans local (eg
St Andrew’s Links Junior Golf Association), regional (eg Lothian golf) and National
(SGU, Scottish Institute of Sport & SLGA) squads as well an encompassing individual
professional golfers.
In particular, ise is proud to have been able to provide sports science support for all of
the National amateur men’s squads (aged under 14 to senior squad level). This support
has taken the form of the development and delivery of:
• Integrated player profiling
• Physiological testing
• Strength and Conditioning Programming
• An educational pathway which ranges from basic introductory sessions on warm-up and stretching to advanced long-term athlete development, periodised strength and conditioning and specialised topics such as drug education.
In addition, Dr Audrey Duncan has been closely involved in the preparation of
the men’s amateur squad for competing in the Eisenhower Championships and has
accompanied these players at international training and competition camps.
In support of this hands-on approach, ise’s director, Brian Ewing has been integral
in the development of an elite golfing performance structure within the Scottish Golf
Union as they developed their new 5 level coaching programme. Brian sat as Director
of Performance and Chair of the Performance Committee for the Scottish Golf Union
until 2008.
4.1.2 Football
Like golf, football is a sport in which ise and its staff have developed an expertise and
reputation for the delivery of support across the football performance continuum.
This spans local, national and professional squad support.
ise director, Brian Ewing has been influential in the development of sports science
support in Scottish football through his significant involvement with the Scottish
Football Association (SFA), including being Chair of the SFA Sports Science Advisory
Group. Having previously been Sports Scientist to the Scotland National Team, for
the last 2 years he has been appointed as Sportd Scientist for the National U21
squad. Since 1986, he has undertaken substantial work with the youth squads and
international youth organisations including International Youth Coach to the National
U15s-U18s squads and a Scottish Football Staff Coach, delivering an educational
programme to aspiring coaches. Brian is currently also a member of the SFA East
Region executive committee.

On an ongoing basis, Sports Science Manager Dr Audrey Duncan and Sport &
Exercise Physiologist Helen Weavers have provided extensive programmes of sports
science support to numerous professional football teams; including: Dundee United
FC, Dundee FC, Greenock Morton FC, St Johnstone FC, Livingston FC, Arbroath FC,
Partick Thistle FC and Preston North End FC. This support has taken the form of
development of fitness testing protocols, workshops, player monitoring, the provision
of strength and conditioning support and (for youth squads) the development and
delivery of long term athlete development programmes.
4.1.3
Volleyball
Assistant director, Paul McPate, has been involved with the Scottish Volleyball
Association (SVA) since 1992, in the capacity of Member of the National Executive
Committee and U19 women’s Assistant National Coach. Currently, Paul is the Chair
of the SVA Student Commission, is the Chair of BUCS Volleyball and is a staff tutor and
a UKCC Assessor. In addition and at a local level, Paul was the Chairman of the Angus
and Dundee District Volleyball Association and was involved in junior development.
4.1.4 Rugby
Assistant director, Paul McPate, was involved with the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU)
from 2004 - 2007, as the lead Strength and Conditioning coach for the Caledonian
Rugby Academy. Sports Scientists Dr Audrey Duncan and Helen Weavers have
provided educational support to Perth Rugby Football Club and Morgan Academy
Rugby Football club.
4.1.5 Hockey
Assistant director Paul McPate and Sport & Exercise Physiologist Helen Weavers
have delivered strength and conditioning to local hockey athletes who are part of the
National U21 men’s and women’s squads.
4.2 Professional Governing Bodies
4.2.1
Fitness Scotland
Fitness Scotland is the official governing body for exercise, health and fitness within
Scotland and it is an agency that ise has developed strong links with. Previous staff
involvement includes:
• Exercise Co-ordinator, Osla Allen, was a Course Director and Assessor for (S)NVQ Gym Instructor and Group Exercise Teacher courses.
•Active Living Programme Manager, Hazel Ednie was involved with Fitness Scotland in her role as a Children’s Activity Tutor.
• Gym Manager, Nicola Long was a Course Director and Assessor for water based exercise (aqua).
4.2.2 British Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation
The British Association for Cardiac Rehabilitation (BACR) is a multidisciplinary
body created to represent and serve the interests of all professionals involved in the
provision of cardiac rehabilitation. Active Living Programme Manager, Hazel Ednie
has held an advisory role for Scottish BACR instructors and has previously been a
representative on the BACR phase 4 graduate network.
4.2.3
Scottish Student Sport
Scottish Student Sport (SSS) is an organisation created to support the integrated
development of sport and physical activity within Scottish Universities and colleges
and represents the interests of Higher Education in relevant national and
international matters.
ise remains a central contributor within the SSS network, and staff members have a
direct involvement in the running of this organisation. Current involvement includes:
• Assistant Director Paul McPate is Chair of the Tayside and Fife Regional Group.
• Director Brian Ewing was elected Chair of the new organisation in June 2011.

4.2.4 British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences
The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) is the UK Professional
Body for all those with an interest in the science of sport and exercise. ise has
developed strong links with BASES. Through delivery of highly reputable sports
science support programmes and exercise based research programmes alongside the
contribution it makes to the unique Sports Biomedicine degree programme, it is now
recognised within BASES for its staff expertise. Individual staff involvement includes:
• Sports scientists Dr Audrey Duncan and Helen Weavers have a reputation for their level of professional expertise by becoming BASES Accredited Exercise Physiologists for scientific support and now provide supervision to developing sports scientists undergoing the process of BASES supervised experience.
• In addition, since 2004, Dr Audrey Duncan has been a reviewer for the BASES accreditation and supervised experience processes, as well as previously being a network representative, before Helen Weavers took this role over in September 2006.
•In 2008, ise was successful in gaining BASES accreditation of its Performance
Assessment Unit (Lab Director - Dr Audrey Duncan). This is the highest professional award that can be made to a sports science laboratory. The lab was
successfully re-accredited in 2013.
• Dr Audrey Duncan and Helen Weavers have successfully delivered a BASES workshop titled “Field Based Testing for Multi Sprint Sports.
• Dr Anna Campbell co-authored an expert statement on exercise and
cancer survivorship.
4.2.5 British Universities and Colleges Sport
Since its formation BUCS has become recognised as the governing body for university
sport in the UK and is accepted as such by the UK Sports Council, National Governing
Bodies of Sport and various other sports related organisations. Assistant Director
Paul McPate is Chair of BUCS volleyball.
4.2.6 United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association
The UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) is the UK professional
governing body for all those with an interest in Performance Strength and
Conditioning. Assistant Director Paul McPate and Sports Science Manager
Dr Audrey Duncan and Sport & Exercise Physiologist Helen Weavers are
accredited by the UKSCA, in recognition of their professional expertise. Dr Audrey
Duncan was asked to undertake a consultancy project for the UKSCA in 2011 and
is also a member of the UKSCA’s Journal editorial panel.

4.3 Other External Agencies: Sport
4.3.1 Sportscotland Institute of Sport
ise has developed close partnerships with many external agencies and has been
involved with the Sportscotland Institute of Sport, providing support to Scotland’s elite
international athletes, since 1999.
Our director, Brian Ewing has sat on the Higher Education Advisory Group for
the Sportscotland Institute of Sport since 2000 and has been an integral part of the
Achieving Excellence Advisory Group since 2004 for sportscotland. Sports Scientist,
Helen Weavers helps in facilitating flexible study arrangements for elite athletes studying
at the University. In addition, our Assistant Director, Paul McPate, and Sports Science
Manager, Dr Audrey Duncan and Sports Scientist, Helen Weavers have a more
hands on approach as they have provided physiological testing and strength and
conditioning support to Sportscotland Institute of Sport athletes living in the Tayside
and Fife Region.
Dr Audrey Duncan was lead Strength and Conditioning Coach and Exercise
Physiologist for Sportscotland Institute of Sport Curling from 2000-2004, working
with Rhona Martin’s squad in their successful quest for their Olympic gold medal.
Audrey was also lead Strength and Conditioning Coach and Exercise Physiologist for
Sportscotland Institute of Sport Golf from 2002-2007, providing individual support for
their identified elite amateur golfers.
Tayside and Fife Institute of Sport is one of six Area Institutes in Scotland which form
an integral part of the feeder network for the Sportscotland Institute of Sport. TFIS
was created in 2001, with the aim of providing an integrated support service and
individually tailored programmes for Tayside and Fife’s most promising young athletes.
TFIS is based within ise and has developed links with several ise staff:
• Director, Brian Ewing has been the Chairman of the Executive Management Group as well as the Chairman of the TFIS Executive Group since 2000.
• Sports and Exercise Physiologist, Helen Weavers was employed (part time, 50%) at TFIS as a Sports Science Officer between September 2003 and February 2007. This involved comprehensive sports science support for the athletes and coaches and co-ordination of the sports science services.
•For more than 10 years Sports Science Manager, Dr Audrey Duncan, Assistant
Director, Paul McPate, and Sports Scientist, Helen Weavers have provided
strength and conditioning and sports science support to TFIS athletes.
• Sports Scientist, Helen Weavers provides academic liaison support to TFIS athletes studying at the University of Dundee.
4.3.2 Tayside and Fife Sport Partnership
Director, Brian Ewing sits on the Executive Management Group for Sport Tayside
and Fife and also has been involved in developing and delivering generic coach
education sessions as well as being on the tertiary education and facilities development
group. Dr Audrey Duncan and Miss Helen Weavers have delivered coach
education workshops to sports and coaches that are part of the Tayside and Fife
Sports Partnership.

4.4 Other External Agencies: Physical Activity and Health
4.4.1 Leisure and Culture Dundee (Dundee City Council)
The Dundee City Council Leisure & Communities Department plays a strategic role in
developing Dundee city’s cultural provision. It aims to create high-quality experiences
in both leisure and the arts for the local community and visitors to Dundee. A number
of ise staff members are currently involved with this agency:
•Hazel Ednie and Osla Allen had an advisory role for developments related to
physical activity and sport.
•Active Living Programme Manager, Hazel Ednie has been involved in delivery of
Basic Moves training through Dundee (National movement programme for primary
children).
•Exercise Programme Co-ordinator, Osla Allen was previously working in
partnership with Dundee Healthy Living Initiative to deliver (S)NVQ Level 2 Group
Exercise courses to individuals targeted in designated disadvantaged communities.
• Assistant Director Paul McPate was an executive committee member of the District Sports Council between 2003 and 2005.
• Director Brian Ewing is on the Dundee Sports and Physical Education strategy group and the Dundee Facilities development group.
•Director Brian Ewing sits on the Dundee Aquatic Group and the ‘New Olympia’
Client Steering Group.
•Assistant Director Paul McPate is on the Sport Dundee Executive Committee
and is also on the Dundee Partnershop Sport and Physical Activity Strategy
Implementation Group.
4.4.2 Tayside Diabetes Education Programme
The Tayside Diabetes Education Programme provides advice to people who have been
diagnosed with diabetes. Hazel Ednie links with the programme to offer exercise
classes at ise for local people living with diabetes.
4.4.3 Tayside Cardiac Rehab Redesign group
Hazel Ednie contributed as a committee member to discuss rehab issues and the
latest redesign of Taysides Cardiac rehab programme.
4.4.4 Macmillan Cancer Support
Hazel Ednie is an adopted member of Macmillan for her role as Move More
Programme Coordinator for Dundee.
