A Summer Prayer
Long warm days...
The pace of life slows...
A time for picnics and rest in the shade...
Lord, help me to rest awhile
in the cooling shade of your presence.
Slow down my restless heart and ill me
with gentle compassion for all your people.
Amen.

Contemplative Sound Bytes
Fr. Ronald Rolheiser
Recently I attended an Institute on
contemplative awareness at which James
Finley was the keynote-speaker. He brings
some pedigree to the task. He has nearly
forty years of experience as a therapist, is
a much sought-after lecturer, has written
extensively and deeply on the subject of
contemplation, and, as a young man, for
several years, had Thomas Merton as his
spiritual director and mentor. He knows of
what he speaks.
I would like to share some of his insights with you by way of a collage
of sound bytes, each of which has a certain “stand-alone” quality;
but, when taken together, also shed some light on the nature of
God, on the nature of contemplation, and on our struggles with
both faith and contemplation.
Here are some of Finley’s perspectives:
• The mystics bear witness to the perfectly holy nature of human
existence, to the fact that we are infinitely loved and held in
existence by love, and that there are times when we momentarily
glimpse and taste that in our lives. A mystic is a person who has
been transformed by such an experience.
slow deep natural breaths. Have your hands in a comfortable
position. Then be present, open, and awake: Do not cling to
nor reject anything that comes to you in thought. As a thought
arises, let it arise, if it lingers, let it linger, if it passes away, let
it pass away, but don’t let the thought carry you away with it.
Move gently and slowly in prayer - don’t violate your body’s
stillness.
• A recommended exercise: Go to your room just before sunset
some night for no other reason than to be there with God when
the sun sets. Have absolutely no other agenda than to watch it
grow dark. Sit for a full hour. Sit in the unrelenting sovereignty of
the day’s end. Sit in radical obedience to the falling light. You’ll
know solitude.
• People who pray regularly generally do not pray well ... but
they become persons who rely upon God to make their prayer
well. And those who pray regularly will, like everyone else, still
experience sadness and death, but sadness and death will no
longer have a tyranny over them.
• There is a difference between spiritual “sweetness” and spiritual
“consolation”: “Sweetness” is feeling good while in prayer;
“consolation” is the sense of having your heart enlarged (and
that can be painful).
• Anxiety comes from our estrangement from the consciousness
of God’s love inside us.
• Quoting Gabriel Marcel: We know we love someone when we
glimpse in that person something that is too beautiful to die.
• Why do we spend so many hours trapped outside the richness
of our own lives, living like persons standing outside our own
houses looking in through the windows of our own homes? Or,
worse still, why are we inside our own houses but in a mental
condition that has us believing we are living outside? What must
we do to wake up before we die?
• From Theresa of Avila:
- When you reach the highest level of human maturity,
you will have just one question: How can I be helpful
- Love is two people sitting in a room, talking to each other.
Neither knows what to say, but they recognize each other.
• Our lives are habitually pressured and so this is the perennial
task: How do we, in the midst of our pressured lives, give
ourselves over to the love that holds us? We cannot make a
graced moment happen, but we can work at putting ourselves
into a position where we offer the least resistance to be
overtaken by a graced moment.
• Contemplative awareness isn’t hard to find - it’s hard to not run
away from.
• Contemplative awareness is seeing things as they are. It’s
resting in God. To be in contemplative awareness is to sit like
“an unlearned child”, in a time of “non-thinking”.
• By sitting still we can learn to be still. Contemplation depends
upon fidelity: If you are faithful to your practice, your practice
will be faithful to you.
• There are some simple rules for the practice of contemplation:
Sit still. Sit straight. Have your eyes closed or lowered. Take
• Why do the Buddhists speak of “emptiness” in relationship to the
concept of God? They do so to refer to God’s infinite simplicity,
that is, God as God is before all the distinctions made about
God. “Emptiness” is our standing before God’s ineffability,
utterly overwhelmed by an over-fullness.
• How can we be helpful in the face of others’ suffering when we
feel so helpless to do anything about it? When persons share
their fragility and pain with someone who hears with a true
listening, those others uncover inside themselves the ‘pearl of
great price’.
And not least:
• The generosity of the Infinite is infinite. Among other things,
this means that we must give ourselves over to a generous
orthodoxy.
• To be unknown by God is altogether too much privacy!
• With God, a little sincerity goes a long way!

Mysterious Relationships — Human and Divine
by Keara Ette
I have never considered myself an
“expert” at relationships. In fact, I
am generally happy to claim the title
of “queen of awkwardness” when it
comes to developing and sustaining
relationships with people. I suppose part
of this comes from my long history of
fumbling my way through interactions,
Keara Ette
conversations, and the often complex
process of developing and sharing
intimacy. It is impossible for me to look at my life and not
recall countless moments (i.e., the “blooper” clips) of the
times when I said silly things, made stupid decisions, was
thoughtless and careless, and found myself humbled and
seeking forgiveness from everyone from colleagues to
acquaintances to family members.
And yet, I suppose the gift of this era of my life has
been the ability to see these shortcomings as also
sometimes necessary bumps along the path of developing
relationships that actually matter. I can honestly say that
these days, there is no ‘”thing” I value more than being
connected to another person or persons in community …
and connected in a way that is going to require vulnerability,
awkwardness, mistakes, forgiveness, healing, and grace.
And with all the “blooper” moments that fill my past (and
still make me blush), I can say with confidence that I would
prefer to experience more of these in the future if it means
I am able to keep diving into relationships (big and small,
short- and long-term) that reveal grace and can form me
and my future for the better.
I thought that when I came before
God I should be composed and know
precisely what I was going to say
and how to say it eloquently.
As I do all of this reflection on what being in relationship
means to me, I also consider whether my relationship with
God is one that is parallel to or diverges from this model. I
admit that for a long time, I thought that what happened
between me and God — our conversations, expressions,
how I carried myself, etc. — really ought to be a more
polished version of what I was able to pull off with other
people. For instance: though I was unsurprised when
I would invariably say something awkward in a social
setting, I thought that when I came before God I should
3
be composed and know precisely what I was going to
say and how to say it eloquently. Before entering into
prayer, I should have at least some sense of whether
I was approaching the Divine with an apology, with
words of praise and thanksgiving, or perhaps respectful
expression of my needs or hopes.
Years of prayer, spiritual direction, study, and just plain
“growing up” have changed my perspective on this,
too. Our Jewish ancestors have taught me that to be
fully human means not only to cry out to others when in
pain or joy … but also to truly cry out to God at all these
moments of life. And Jesus’ open invitation to approach
his (and our) heavenly Father by addressing him with the
familiar “Daddy!” has slowly opened the gates for me.
These days, I have enjoyed
the freedom and peace that has
resulted from coming before God
with child-like shyness and
my signature awkwardness.
So when my heart is breaking because of personal grief
or frustration with some aspect of our collective human
frailties, I am more fully human when I stop trying to be
“polished” and put-together and simply come before God
with my tears, my wounds, and my frustrations — and even
include some screaming/yelling, if I am so moved! And
then there are those moments of life (like my past weeks
and months of awaiting the arrival of our baby) when I
have felt humbled by both the outpouring of love from
friends and family and the embarrassingly-extravagant
and mysterious work God has been doing in my midst.
And in moments like these, instead of trying to find the
right prayer from a book or approach God with plannedout words, I have enjoyed the freedom and peace that
has resulted from coming before God with child-like
shyness and my signature awkwardness — even averting
my gaze and saying virtually nothing — but knowing that
is exactly where and in what state I need to be! And in my
imagination, God receives this with the loving laughter
and beaming approval of a parent. For, so often, leaving
us speechless and in humble awe and gratitude is
precisely what God was going for in the first place!

Harbor of Hope Education Grant
This year’s recipient of the Harbor
of Hope Education Grant is Devin
Gaspard. Devin is 10-years-old and
will enter the 4th grade at Holy Trinity
Catholic School in August. He lives
with his parents, Kevin and Wendy
Gaspard, in Kiln, MS (famous for being
the hometown of Brett Favre and for
moonshine —no — seriously!). You
can always see the Gapard family at
St. Clare Catholic Church not only on
Sundays as they are involved in many
church events such as the recent
seafood festival. They are very good
people and it is wonderful what the
people of Old St. Pat’s continue to do
for the parishioners of St. Clare.

Encore Invites You to Tour
Old St. Patrick’s Church!
Tuesday Evening, August 6
Who would go on a tour of their own home? It sounds a little crazy.
But what if your home was an architectural and artistic gem that played
a significant role in the history of Chicago? Maybe not so crazy.
Many of us know that Old St. Patrick’s Church is the oldest public
building in Chicago. Many of us also know that it is rich in history
and home to the magnificent stained glass windows created by
Thomas O’Shaughnessy.
But there is so much more to know!
Come tour your “spiritual home” and hear fascinating facts and
tales about our church, tracing its humble beginnings as a wooden
structure two blocks north of our current location and continuing
the story to the present day
The evening begins with light refreshments in the rectory on
Tuesday, August 6 from 5:30. – 6 p.m. The tour, led by Old St.
Patrick’s Church docent, Jim McLaughlin, begins at 6 p.m. and
ends at 7 p.m.
And as part of Encore’s involvement in the Kinship Initiative, we
are delighted to be hosting some of our friends from St. Agatha’s.
Please join Encore (and invite your friends and family!) for an
amazing tour of our beautiful home. All are welcome!
To help us offer you our best hospitality, please R.S.V.P. to the
church offices at 312.648.1021 by Monday, August 5.

Did you know — the total volunteer hours worked annually at the Greater Chicago Food Depository now represent the
eequivalent of 48 full-time employees?
Did you know — the Old St. Pat’s community is curently participating in six seasonal Wednesday Evenings of Service:

These credits are used by our agencies to offset their costs of food purchased from the GCFD. Fourteen is the minimum
age to volunteer.

Wednesday, July 31, 2013
Hours:
6 - 9 p.m.
Location: 4100 West Ann Lurie Place (42nd Place), Chicago

These functions require standing:
•
When perishable foods have been donated, the preparation of these foods for distribution is always
the priority for our assignments. Items are sorted by date, freshness and quality and are repacked
for distribution.
•
Should a large group be present at the same time we serve, we may be part of assembling “emergency food
packages” providing provisions for a family of four for four days. Each volunteer adds the same item to each
package (moving on a continuously running conveyor belt). Our goal is to assemble 1,000 packages.
•
Various kinds of cereal, pasta, or rice arrive in 300 - 500 pound drums. These items are repackaged into
convenient size packages, labeled and packed for distribution.
•
Administrative assignments for those not able to stand for three hours:
These asssignments, when available, involve mailings and compilation of publicity packets.
Pre-Registration a Must!
It is imperative that you pre-register as there is a limit of 30 spaces available for Old St. Pat’s volunteers. New insurance
requirements…namely ratio of GCFD employees to volunteers…are now in place. Should the number of volunteers from
other groups be lower than expected, we may be able to use their unfilled spots. At the Christmas GCFD Service Session,
eleven volunteers who signed-up late had to be turned away. Please sign-up early!
To register, please contact the coordinator: Jim Holbrook, at 773.237.2625, or [email protected].

In Chicago Public Schools, only 57% of students will graduate high school,
and only 8% will receive a Bachelor’s degree by the time they are 25-yearsold. Horizons for Youth volunteers help low-income students in Chicago beat
these statistics year after year. Throughout Horizons for Youth’s 23 years,
99% of students have graduated from high school, and 80% have continued

Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his
feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by
myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” - Lk 10:38-40

Sts. Joachim
and Anne
In the Scriptures,
Matthew
and
Luke
furnish
a legal family
history of Jesus,
tracing ancestry
to show that Jesus
is the culmination
of
great
promises.
Not
only is his mother’s family neglected,
we also know nothing factual about
them except that they existed. Even the
names Joachim and Anne come from a
legendary source written more than a
century after Jesus died.
The heroism and holiness of these people,
however, is inferred from the whole family
atmosphere around Mary in the Scriptures.
Whether we rely on the legends about
Mary’s childhood or make guesses from
the information in the Bible, we see in her a
fulfillment of many generations of prayerful
persons, herself steeped in the religious
traditions of her people.
The strong character of Mary in making
decisions, her continuous practice of prayer,
her devotion to the laws of her faith, her
steadiness at moments of crisis, and her
devotion to her relatives—all indicate a closeknit, loving family that looked forward to
the next generation even while retaining the
best of the past.
Joachim and Anne represent that entire
quiet series of generations who faithfully
perform their duties, practice their faith and
establish an atmosphere for the coming of
the Messiah, but who remain humble and
happy to exist in relative obscurity.
