The presentation was
made by Phil Gardner –

after her extended stay
in hospital.

local charities via various activities and social
evenings throughout the
year and over its 10 year
history has raised over

COSTA NEWS, October 14-20, 2016
Open day at U3A Vall de Pop
By Lorraine Bellami-Barker, Vice-President
Murla, October 6 What a great day to kick start our
10th Anniversary year! In the space of two hours, more
than 200 people came to the Polivalent to see the many
activities available to members. 30 of our groups had
tables set up, showing off creative talent, cerebral pursuits and competitive events.
Most popular were the many arts and crafts tables flower arranging, with ladies looking wonderful in Victorian costume, the paintings and photography got
many accolades from the visitors, and our Creative
Writing group raised more than €170 for Jalon Valley
Help from the sales of their "It's all in the Mix" anthology of prose and poems.
The Wine Tasting Group had a difficult Wordsearch
competition, with a bottle of excellent wine as the prize,
and the lovely flower arrangements were also raffled
off and won by a number of delighted recipients.
27 new members joined the U3A, but the most important thing for the organisation is that our members
get more involved in what the Vall del Pop U3A has to
offer them.
On the stage, the Popsters sang a medley of well
known songs, followed by dancing exhibitions by the
Ballroom and Line Dancing groups. Our Casual Choir
rattled the rafters with a selection of Beatles songs well known to all of us, and most of the audience joined
in with ALL the words.
Finally thanks must go in particular to our Membership Representative David Prestoe for ensuring as
many as possible of the groups were represented, to
our President Bob Welham and all the rest of the Committee, Group Leaders and many members who joined
in to make the day such a great success.
If you are interested in joining this very active organisation, please do come to the next General Meeting
on November 3, where we have a wonderful speaker Michael Hillier, author of eight novels, who will be talk-

Being responsible for publicity up until the end of

other local papers and magazines for their support and
regular coverage.

U3A Dénia
By Irena Bodnarec
A coach load of Companians members went on an overnight trip to Valencia last
week – soaking up some culture and tradition over their two day stay, where the
group stayed at a wonderful 4 star hotel near to the opera house. On day one they
had a local tour guide who took the group through both the new and old parts of the
city followed by free time browsing around the indoor market.
They had the choice of going out for their evening meals as they were staying on
a bed and breakfast basis. The following day, after a delicious hot and cold breakfast
buffet they headed to Albufera, where they were met by a local tour guide and
shown the rice growing region and museum house before setting off on a boat trip
on the lake. They then returned for a spectacular banquet at the local castle restaurant before heading back to Albir. It was a thoroughly enjoyable adventure for the
club and one they may repeat next year.

manned by volunteers 24/7, who are there to offer a confidential ear with empathy and understanding. For face-toface support, Stepping Stones have group meetings on the
second Wednesday of every month at the El Cid Restaurant
in Benidoleig. The group meetings are run by a retired professional who ran his own psychotherapy practice in the
UK. Those who attend the Stepping Stones group have very
different backgrounds and life experiences, but have found
the relaxed and informal meetings mutually supportive
and very helpful.

chosen for the high number
of tourists and residents in
the area and because the
local administration at the

It will be a remarkable day

speakers and seating for observers.
With our guest bugler to
play the Reveille and the Last

Please join us.

our ex-patriates we also have
the money to send to the Benevolent Fund in Uk that supports the members of the
armed forces injured in conflict and their families and of
those who gave their lives.

COSTA NEWS, October 14-20, 2016
Costa Blanca Mountain
Walkers Autumn Season
The Costa Blanca Mountain
Walkers celebrated the start of
their autumn walking season
with a record breaking assembly of 113 walkers.
There was a ‘first day of
term’ atmosphere - meeting up
with friends, showing off new
walking kit and swapping
stories of summer adventures.
The three circular walks included a gentle stroll around
Parcent and Alcalali, a moderate walk including the Col de
Rates, and a strenuous walk
over the Carrascal de Parcent
ridge. The day concluded with
lunch at the Parcent Piscine
Restaurant and a presentation
by the chairperson Carol Hardbach to John Petty, one of the
groups original walkers who
walked on the day along with
his friend Alan Myerscough
who will be celebrating his ninety first birthday later this
year!
Full details of all the autumn walks, including walk
grades, length, duration and
start points are on the programme which can be viewed
or downloaded from the website www.cbmwalkers.org. The
website also incudes a wealth
of information for regular
walkers as well as for those
who may never have walked in
the mountains.
For those preferring to walk
independently please visit our
sister
website
www.walks
inspain.org which provides
walking routes in the Costa
Blanca and other regions.
This friendly international
group hopes that you will come
and join them, and share their
love of walking in this beautiful mountain region of Spain.
