Reflections on Scripture

Relection: While the Gospel of
John is the one that is most clearly
written with a theological view, and
while most scholars suggest that its
"historicity" is most suspect, this
reading includes elements that may
have historical relevance. For we
irst see John the Baptist identify
Jesus as Messiah to two of hisown
disciples,oneofwhomwasAndrew.
Thus, Andrew (and maybe his
brother, Simon) were likely part of
the cult that followed the Baptist.
Second,wemightaskwhatJesuswas
doingatthebanksoftheJordanwith
John. Was he a follower of John as
well?HowdidJohnknowthatJesus
was the "Lamb of God?" Finally, we
see an independent (from the
Synoptics)sourceofthenameofthe
man we Catholics acknowledge as
the irst "Pope." Simon (a common
Aramaic name) was to be called
Kepha, which in Aramaic means
"Rock." Its translation into Greek
yields Petrus, which also means
"Rock." (Recall: Petroleum is "oil
from rock", and Petriied wood, or
"stone-like wood.) This also
announces that Jesus is the
"Messiah," the Anointed One, or
Christos. If we read further in 5
Samuel, we ind that the Prophet
identiies the Kings of Israel by
pouring oil on their heads, or
anointing them. It is God who has
anointedJesus.

The baptism of a child is a special cause for joy
and celebration on the part of the Church, the
whole community of faith! Baptism is a birth into
the Christian community and is in every way as
solemn and important as birth itself. It is an event
that needs to be prepared for, and it can serve
as a reminder to you about your own faith and
what it means to you. If you have any questions
