Golf Tournament which will be held Tuesday, September 16th at Old Gatlinburg
Golf & Games. The emphasis is on fun but the real goal is to generate income
for the Chamber’s Educational Program which awards scholarships and assist

Hospitality Management Solutions has raised the stakes in the Sevier County lodging industry with the construction of the Hilton Garden

Pittman Center Heritage Day
Saturday, September 20, 2008 | 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Pittman Center will celebrate their Heritage Day with various family activites including
entertainment, food, arts and crafts, dog show, various demonstrations and exhibits. Come and see basket making, antique farm and dairy
equipment, blacksmithing along with fiddle, banjo and clogging contests. Old time children games and over 45 crafters will be available.
Admission is FREE and we look forward to welcoming you to this annual event.

The United States Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ encourages and
accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development
practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood
and accepted tools and performance criteria.
LEED is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design,
construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and
operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’
performance. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in
five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy
efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality (USGBC). The LEED rating system is the
most prevalent and recognized program related to green building construction in the United States.
There are several paths to LEED certification for a variety of building types including new construction,
existing buildings, commercial interiors and schools. Programs that are in various stages of development
include retail, homes and neighborhood development. The most prevalent path to certification is for new
construction and major renovation the current version of which is called LEED-NC Version 2.2.

There are four levels of certification; Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum. These levels are reached
through a point system that is measures the level of sustainability of the building. The points needed for
Certified is 26-32, for Silver from 33-38, for Gold 39-51 and for Platinum 52 up to the maximum points of
69. The point system is grouped in six categories; Sustainable Sites (14 possible points), Water Efficiency
(5 possible points), Materials and Resources (13 possible points), Indoor Environmental Air Quality (15
possible points) and Innovation and Design Process (5 possible points).

The LEED-NC system will change on January 1, 2009 from Version 2 to Version 3. While the basic system
remains the same, the point categories will be weighted to place more emphasis on global climate
change and other high priority environmental issues and to allow projects to respond better to local
environmental conditions.

New Less Expensive Product for Treating Hemlocks
IMIDIPRO is a new product on the market and is 35% less expensive than the
traditional product used for treated the Woolly Adelgid and is located at the Sevier
Farmer’s Co-Op.
Teacher Supply Closet Receives Donation
We want to thank Sue Bock for making a generous donation of supplies for the upcoming
school year to the Chamber established Teacher Supply Closet. Please help us keep the
shelves fully stocked for the many teachers that gratefully visit to pick up needed items for
their classrooms.
Clip For Cure
September 14th is the 7th annual “Clip For Cure” fundraising event for
the Mountain Hope Good Shepard Clinic, Inc. and Smoky Mountain
Food Ministries of Sevierville, TN. Sheer Envy Hair & Nails and the
salon’s Owner/Master Stylist, Toni Flenniken, is the main sponsor of
the annual event. Each year gets better and better, thanks to YOU!
This year all haircuts and manicures will cost $10.00. In addition,
we will be selling tickets for a large selection of gift certificates from
various local businesses and artisans. There will be games, food & entertainment throughout the day.
All proceeds from the day will go to the Clinic.
Sheer Envy Hair & Nails is dedicated to helping organizations, which gives back so much to local
residents and our community. For many residents of Sevier County, including children, Mountain
Hope Clinic is the only opportunity for personal healthcare that they are able to receive. Smoky
Mountain Food Ministries feed a phenomenal amount of our residents on an annual basis. An
organization that gives so much back to our children and our community deserves all of our support.

Long showers literally pour resources down the drain, with every minute you
linger under the standard showerhead using four to six gallons of water. If you’re
spending more than five minutes in the shower, you’re dawdling. If it’s more like
10 minutes, over the course of a year you could be wasting enough water to fill a
backyard pool and creating an extra 2,200 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions just
from the energy used to heat the water. Reduce your average shower time from
10 minutes to 5 and save more than 4,200 gallons of water each year while cutting
your utility bills. Save even more by insulating your hot-water tank, which can
eliminate 1,100 pounds of greenhouse gases each year, and setting the thermostat
of your water heater to a lower temperature.

Annette Simmons, book author and storyteller
extraordinaire captivated her audience Thursday, August
7, 2008 in the Chamber’s latest Dine & Discover. This
enlightening breakfast and workshop was held at the
fantastic Clarion Inn & Suites.
Ms. Simmons demonstrated skills in the art of storytelling
that businesses can use in telling the story of their
business. Attendees were even given the opportunity to
participate in their
own “storytelling”.
Ms. Simmons books are available for Chamber
Members to check out from the Chamber library and
the dvd version of the August 7th workshop will soon
be available for loan as well.

NATIONAL PARK TO HOST CIVILIAN
CONSERVATION CORPS ANNIVERSARY EVENT
Great Smoky Mountains
National Park is making plans to
celebrate the 75th anniversary
of the Civilian Conservation
Corps (CCC) this year. The
Park will host a special day of
commemorative activities on
Saturday, September 27, 2008.
The activities will take place
in and around the Sugarlands
Visitor Center starting at 10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The event is free to the public.
The CCC was established in 1933 as a federal work project during the Great
Depression, employing young men in conservation work on
federal and state lands. The program provided gainful employment and
education to the enrollees from all over the country while also providing much
needed work on public lands throughout the nation.
The September 27 event at Sugarlands Visitor Center will include interpretive
programs entitled “That Magnificent Army of Youth and Peace: The CCC in the
Great Smoky Mountains;” “Dollar-a-Day Boys: A Musical Tribute to the CCC;”
and “CCC Fire Tower Construction in the Smokies.”

Ripley’s Aquarium Named Top aquarium in U.S.
Program Sponsored by:
Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies has been named the top
aquarium in the United States by TripAdvisor, an online travel
community. The ranking was determined based on traveler
popularity, consumer ratings and TripAdvisor editors.
Since 2000, Gatlinburg has been home to Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies, which has
hosted more than 10 million visitors and is the home to over 10,000 animals including
14-foot sharks in a 1.4 million tank aquarium.
“Ripley’s Aquarium is Gatlinburg’s most popular
family attraction, and TripAdvisor’s honor further
heightens interest among people of all ages who
are considering a vacation to Gatlinburg.” said
David Perella, Executive Director of the Gatlinburg
Department of Tourism. The list is TripAdvisor’s first
comprehensive ranking of U.S. aquariums.

The MAP Patrol is now proudly sponsored by SmartBank. On August 5,
2008 the MAP Patrol consisting of Board of Director Jerry Morton and Paula
King, Ambassador Sherri Webb and Chamber Staff Sherry Holtzclaw and
Connie Burns were chauffeured in a limousine courtesy of A Step Above
Limousines. The Patrol visited Cliff Dwellers, Flying Pig Bar-B-Que, Foothills
