We provide our students at Woodenbong Central
with many and varied opportunities both within and
beyond the classroom. We do this to help our
students find and develop their passions.
Opportunities allow our students to find out what they like and what
might constitute future employment and career path. We also assist our
students develop their talents through persistence, hard work and the
development of a growth mindset. We believe that our students deserve
to live empowered lives with passion and purpose.
When given the opportunity our students time and time again
demonstrate that they can thrive and achieve at the highest levels. For
example 4 of our current students either have represented or soon will
represent Australia in various sports:




Sherentai for Futsal,
Remy for Archery,
Shallin for touch football and
Katelyn for touch rugby.
In less than a month Jennifer and Jemimah will perform in an
opera, Pecan Summer, in Sydney at the Opera House. Recently
Bernadette was recognised in Sydney at Parliament House for her
leadership. When given a chance to follow their passions, with support, practice, multiple opportunities
and timely feedback our students continual to learn and improve.
Students also require multiple opportunities to both develop and practice their
capacity to work collaborative and independently, to create, to think critically and
to communicate effectively to others. At Woodenbong Central School we create
these opportunities. Our open spaces project, Infants numeracy and Interest
Electives are good examples. We also need to create spaces with our classrooms
for our students to be able to become immersed in their learning. That is we
need to create flexible learning space to allow both collaborative and
independent work.
Multiple opportunities for deliberate practice associated
with specific feedback and self-reflection assist learning.
These opportunities assist the student to see themselves
succeeding. Studies by researcher like John Hattie show
that self-reported grades has the greatest effect on student
learning. That is students who report that they will achieve
usually do achieve. That is for most students the first
hurdle that they must overcome is their belief that they
can achieve. Self-efficacy (the belief that you can succeed)
is very important in both learning and the achievement of
goals.
Our Preschool to Kindergarten transition and orientation program commences next Monday, 22nd
August. The first part of the program is the transition program at the pre-school. This will run each
Monday for the rest of this Term. It will be followed by the orientation program at the school. The
program is available free of charge to any child who intends to start Kindergarten at Woodenbong
Central School in 2017. For further information contact Christine Clothier at the school 66351281.

The staff, students and wider community of Woodenbong Central School continues
towards making Woodenbong Central School a safe place for all. Woodenbong Central
school has anti-bullying policy and procedures. A copy of these are available on the
school website or via the front office upon request. The policy outlines how we define
bullying and how we school responds to incidents of bullying. There are many forms of
bullying. However, bullying involves the inappropriate use of power, an intention to
harm and it is repeated. Bullying is not acceptable behaviour at Woodenbong Central
School. By working together we can minimise such incidents at the school. If as a
parent you are concerned about incidents at school you should contact Ian Geyer, the
Deputy Principal, for incidents in the high school and Anne Marie Mason or Christine
Clothier for incidents in the primary.
The Tell Them from Me survey for students, parents and teachers opens
next Monday. If you would like to complete the parent survey could you
contact either Anne-Marie Mason or Doug Gardiner on 66351281 for a
unique username and password. We use the results of this survey as one
source of information to inform and help us reflect on practices within the school. Such surveys assist
us improve as a school: helping students to learn.

D.P. & Careers News
On Monday just gone, 12 of our students successfully completed their Workplace Health and Safety
Course ("White Card"). The training was delivered by "Skills On Safety", from Tweed Heads. The students
were: Meg Green, Paige Blinman, Lerqayne Hippi, Zac Reid, Hannah Allen, Billie Black-Oneill, Tim
Arthurson, Tamika Smith, Jacob Pascoe, Katie Jones, Charlie Want, Clinton Williams.
It was a full-on day, but the credential is certainly one worth having. We needed to "import" five students
from Bonalbo Central School, in order to ensure we met the threshold minimum number of participants
required. And we still had three spare places!! I do understand that the course fee, although subsidised
down from $130 to $50, could have still been an issue for some households, so no criticism intended or
implied there.
School uniform in Secondary has been getting a bit how-ya-going of late. It worries me when I see
uniform starting to deteriorate, because a uniform helps to build a sense of belonging and focus into the
school playground and classrooms. When uniform dwindles, it can take those positive qualities with it.
Uniform in NSW public schools cannot be made compulsory (apart from some WH&S issues, such as
covered footwear), so the child's household plays a major role in helping the school to achieve a
satisfactory uniform compliance outcome. I do encourage all parents (K-12), to work with the school,
and take a strong stand on what our kids wear to school. Our P&C is a supporter of WCS being a
"uniform" school.
On Tuesday this week, I was invited by Scripture teacher Coral Reid, to speak to Yr3/4, on why I belong
to the State Emergency Services (SES). It was a fun time, with heaps of questions, and I came away with
a suggestion from Athol, who said "SES" really stood for "Save Everyone's Souls". I quite like that, and
might take it up with Premier Baird.
Here is a quick quizz: what do these WCS students currently have in common: Shallin Fuller, Remy
Leonard, Katelyn Grimmett, and Sherentai Hippi. It is something special, and something good!!

is not a scam.......)

Year 7 at Tooloom Falls
On Monday, Mr Rex, Susan Williams and I
accompanied our Year 7 students as they went
for an afternoon trip to Tooloom Falls. We were
met at the falls by the Githabul Rangers, who
cooked the students a BBQ lunch (including a first
-try of kangaroo for some students) and took
them on a walk around the rehabilitation work
being conducted below Tooloom Falls.
This
was
a
fantastic
opportunity for
the students to
see
first-hand
the management strategies being employed at
the site, and the knowledge and skills of the
Rangers in conducting their work. The students
were also taught about invasive species like
privet, cat’s-claw, ragweed (or asthma weed) and
troad, and native species
like lomandra (which are
being actively re-planted to
help with stabilising the
sand).
The
students
became a part of this
rehabilitation,
planting
some lomandras along the creek as we went. The
scale of the task facing the Rangers was also
made apparent to the students, as they saw the
un-cleared sections across the creek.
From a Geography perspective, it was also
interesting to talk to the Rangers about how this
work will hopefully bring the community back on
Country, as this is an important local site, and the
plans to make walking tracks around the Falls to
promote broader tourism in the area. The
significance and value of the site was made
apparent through the passion and knowledge
displayed, and this was also a valuable insight for
the students. Mr Rex will also be using this visit
in Science, as it
gave students a
first-hand look at
some
of
the
geological features
of the site, and the
forces involved in
shaping this area.
I would like to thank Susan Williams for all the
work she did in making this trip possible, and Ben
and Helen for their work in looking at ways we
can secure ongoing links between the Rangers
and the school. Lastly, I would like to thank all
the Rangers (Cyril, Wayne, Paul, Euston, Ron and
Philip) for taking the time to lead the students
through their work, and to share some of their
knowledge with the students. It was a
memorable experience, and a great opportunity
to
get
the
students out on
Country.

Science/Ag/TAS News—Week 5 Term 3
Often “DING!” heard, rarely seen?
The “Bell Miner” [Manorina melanophrys] is heard in
nearly every patch of dense forest near Woodenbong,
but not often do we get close enough to see this bird.
Just on the border a few weeks ago I was able to snap
a few photos of these birds appearing to nibble at
some leaf-eating insects.
Aside from the obvious green hue, they bear a
resemblance to the closely related Noisy Miner
[Manorina melanocephala] and introduced Common
(Indian) Miner [Acridotheres tristis] birds!
Seems like Spring already?
With towering Rhubarb, advanced tomato
seedlings (of the early “Rouge de Marmande” and
“Mary Italian” varieties), Lilac Bottlebrush and
Citronella Pelargonium seedlings very advanced,
and various varieties of onions and chillies being
trialled from seed, the iGrow Gardening activity
group has been productive
into August. The upper
“cricket nets” garden beds are
being prepared with help from
“Goldie” adding special soil to
them, and we thank Mitre 10
for their generous donation of
some potting mix and
strawberry plants!

Good morning Carolyn,
Thank you for your participation in H.O.T.E.L School at Sea World Resort. It was an absolute pleasure hosting Woodenbong
Central School students.
I wanted to share some feedback from the Resort with you. The students all displayed exemplary work ethic and professional
behaviour. One Woodenbong Central School student which stood out was Joshua Weston, who was also the recipient of the
STAR Performer Award. Please see below feedback from our front desk team members regarding Mr. Weston:
“Joshua spoke up on every question showing a great enthusiasm for the business. He was very polite throughout his
sessions”.
We are greatly looking forward to welcoming Woodenbong Central School back to Sea World Resort. Please do not hesitate
to contact me directly on the details below should I be of any assistance to you.

Always remember that no matter how long you walk with
God, your carnal nature never improves. It never becomes
more like Jesus, even over time. That’s why we’re told to
‘crucify’ it daily (see Galatians 5:24).
Come and visit your local Fire Station in
WOODENBONG on the 10th of
September,
9am to 2pm for GET READY WEEKEND.
Your local Volunteer Fire Fighting Team
will be there to help you prepare for the
unexpected fire that may present itself
in the future.
There will be a FREE SAUSAGE SIZZLE,
BALLOONS for the kids and an
INFORMATION PACK to help you GET
READY for the BUSH FIRE SEASON.
While you are there we can show you
the fire trucks and equipment which
help us protect your community from
bushfires.
An added bonus is that there will be
FIRE EXTINGUISHERS available for YOU
TO TRY. This will be a rare opportunity
to actually use a real fire extinguisher.
The team will explain the correct way to
operate a fire extinguisher, which fires
to use a fire extinguisher on and how to
approach a fire to PUT IT OUT.
We look forward to seeing you there.

Even the apostle Paul struggled with his lower nature: ‘We
naturally love to do evil things… opposite from the things
that the Holy Spirit tells us to do; and the good things we
want to do when the Spirit has His way with us are just the
opposite of our natural desires. These two forces within us
are constantly fighting… to win control over us, and our
wishes are never free from their pressures… But when the
Holy Spirit controls our lives He will produce this kind of
fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness and
self-control.’ (Galatians 5:17, 22–23 TLB)
You ask, ‘Is such a lifestyle even possible?’ Yes, but you
must do these four things: (1) Remember that Satan never
takes a day off. You’re constantly in his crosshairs, so you
must protect yourself with God’s Word and prayer. (2)
Identify the sin you’re most prone to. The Bible says, ‘Lay
aside… the sin which so easily ensnares.’ (Hebrews 12:1
NKJV) Why? Because the area of your greatest weakness is
the one in which you’ll constantly be attacked. (3) Keep
your spiritual tank full. ‘The mind of sinful man is death, but
the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.’ (Romans
8:6 NIV) (4) Walk in God’s strength, not your own. Does the

Our students are truly awesome. So many of
them are achieving at high levels. Some of their
thoughts around this topic have been:
“It’s more important to try your best and enjoy
yourself rather than focus on winning” and
“Good sportsmanship and good conduct are
important in competition”
Great attitudes eh ?
