Our BIGGEST Show Yet!
This year marks a special milestone for the Atlantic Heavy Equipment Show:
30 years of getting the job done. That’s right; the show has been a true pillar of
the heavy equipment industry for three decades! As THE heavy equipment show
for the region, it’s a must-attend event for the roadbuilding, forestry, landscaping,
municipality, and heavy equipment sectors.
Whether it’s your first visit to the show or you’ve never missed an edition, I’m

services, and tons of big iron have taken over the inside of the Moncton Coliseum
plus an additional 80,000 square feet of outdoor space.

Contractors Association (ALICA) has

For several decades, ALICA has supported the agricultural,

The Atlantic Heavy Equipment Show has become a gathering place for road building, construction, and forestry profes-
sionals who look to this show to keep themselves apprised
of the trends in their respective industries and to help them
make purchasing decisions. The high quality and profile of
this event is due in large part to the effort of our exhibitors
who “go all out” every two years with impressive displays

About the Atlantic Land Improvement Contractors’ Association (ALICA)
In the late 1970s and early 1980s the Soil and Water Engineers from
the three Maritime Departments of Agriculture organized two-day
seminars and table-top displays for contractors in the Atlantic Region
who were involved in agricultural land development work. These
meetings were held at the Howard Johnson’s Motel in Moncton.
After several years, it was decided that an association of contractors could be formed patterned after some of the Land Improvement
Contractors Associations in a number of American States. An
organizational meeting was convened on the second day of one of
these seminars in 1983. John Higgins and Paul Milburn presented
the aims and objectives of such an association and proposed bylaws to the meeting. It was moved and seconded that an association
be created, and following the motion, a Board of Directors was
appointed from the floor.
A Board of Directors meeting was convened immediately
after that meeting and the Board elected Andre Albert as the first
President. Paul Milburn was appointed as secretary. The Board
was made up of an engineer from each of the three Departments

of Agriculture and two contractor representatives from each of
the Maritime Provinces. After a couple of years, the Association
saw the need for a secretary-manager and Earl Gilchrist was
retained for that position.
The newly formed association had approximately 300 members, including contractors, equipment suppliers, support industry
people, and others allied with the industry.
The Association continued to hold annual seminars where
best practices for agricultural land development were presented.
The association also sponsored field demonstrations on various
aspects of land development.
In 1998, and in keeping with the times, ALICA transitioned
and shifted from their original mandate of agricultural land development to a much broader resource-based emphasis in order
to remain relevant and to appeal to a broader membership. Today,
the association is also cognizant of the need of giving back to
the industries that it supports; check out the separate article on

“giving back” on page 38.

From Humble Beginnings; Celebrating 30 Years!
The Heavy Equipment Show began as an idea of one of the
members of the Board of Directors of ALICA. The idea was
presented to the Board and following much discussion, the Board
agreed to appoint a show committee to establish and present an
Atlantic show.
The show committee consisted of John Higgins, Andre Albert, Earl Gilchrist, and Paul Milburn, with John Higgins being
appointed show chairman. The committee approached the City
of Moncton to see if they would partner with the Association in
putting together a show. The city agreed, with the proviso that
the net profit or loss from the show be split on a 50-50 basis.
The first show was held in the winter of 1986. It had very
humble beginnings. The show had displays in all of Agrena A
and half of Agrena B with some live demos in the form of a

at the end of the show and encouraged the Board of Directors to
carry on and hold another show. The original show committee
continued to organize and manage the next two shows. They
became known as the “boys in the bright green blazers.” At
that time the show was called the Atlantic Industrial Equipment
Show. The name was changed to the Atlantic Heavy Equipment
Show following the 1992 show.
Following the 1990 show, the Board of Directors of ALICA
put out a request for proposals for an event manager. It was
felt that professional show managers could advance and grow
the show. As a result of the RFP, Master Promotions Ltd. was
selected to manage the show with a mandate to fill the whole
Coliseum-Agrena complex. The rest is history. Master Promotions has continued to manage the show with all major decisions being made jointly with the ALICA Board of Directors.
The show has grown to the point where in addition to filling
the Coliseum-Agrena complex, an additional 80,000 square
feet of outdoor exhibits has been added. Today, the Atlantic
Heavy Equipment Show is recognized as one of the premiere
shows in the country with a loyal exhibitor base and great show
attendance over the two-day event. n

The ballot is in a "passport" format, where visitors must stop by the booths of each of the three
participating sponsors to request a stamp, and
then deposit their ballot at a box located on the
show floor.

The success of the show has helped sustain the Association since its inception
and has supported both the forestry and construction sectors through a variety
of initiatives that best meet the needs and objectives of the association. These
include contributions to various associations and organizations, sponsorship
of environmental and resource education programs, sponsorship of four
scholarships to various colleges and universities in the region, sponsored field
trips, funding research and development projects, and supporting equipment
operator training programs in three schools in the region.
As proud owners of the Atlantic Heavy Equipment Show, ALICA, in
