“A Church Where You Can Feel the Holy Spirit”
Superintendent Clethen U. Sutton, Pastor,
Miracle Temple C.O.G.I.C. Administrative
Assistant to the Jurisdictional Bishop
Sometimes as we go about our daily lives we sometimes fail in being grateful and recognizing all of the good that is done on our
behalf. May not necessarily be because of a bad reason, but perhaps due to just being inundated with routine schedules that you
may have. I read an inspiring story that demonstrated that there are many people working on our team that we often times fail to
recognize for their good work. It could be because we didn’t think that they were important enough, they don’t have a title,
perhaps the individual don’t dress as well as we do, or maybe, just maybe, you are just so caught up into whatever it is that you are
caught up into, GOOD, BAD or INDIFFERENT, you don’t even realize that if it were not for the people that you don’t even speak
to, doing what you don’t realize that they do and don’t talk about, you would not be able to do, all that you do. This story is about
teamwork. Being employed as a law enforcement officer I often speak about teamwork and I certainly emphasize it my church.
The story is about a man named Charles Plumb who graduated from the US Naval Academy and he was a jet fighter pilot in
Vietnam. Prior to Mr. Plumb being shot down, he had competed 75 missions. When Mr. Plumb’s jet was being shot down, he
ejected out of his seat and parachuted into the enemy’s hands beneath him on the ground. Mr. Plumb then spent six years in a
Vietnamese prison. He was Fortunate to survive. Today Mr. Plumb gives lectures telling folks about the many lessons that he has
learned in life. One day while Mr. Plumb was eating at a restaurant with his wife a man came up and said, “Your Plumb! You
flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!” “How in the world did you know that?”
asked Mr. Plumb. “I packed your parachute,” the man replied. Mr. Charles Plumb in surprise and gratitude had to catch his breath.
The man then shook Mr. Plumb’s hand and said, “I guess it worked!” Plumb assured the man that the parachute had worked and
said to the man, “if your chute hadn’t worked, I wouldn’t be here today.” That night Mr. Plumb could not sleep. He said, “I kept
pondering what he might have looked like in a Navy uniform – a Dixie cup hat, a bib in the back, and bell bottom trousers. I
wonder how many times I might have seen him and not even said good morning, how you or anything else; because, you see, I
was a fighter pilot and he was just a sailor.” Mr. Plumb thought a lot about that man who had packed his parachute and the hours
he spent at a wooden table at the bottom of the ship carefully packing his and sailor’s chutes. This man held in his hands the
chute; the fate of someone he did not even know. Charles Plumb is now a motivational speaker telling this story to hundreds. He
always ask his audiences after telling it, “Who’s packing your parachute?” In our life many people have a hand in our parachutes.
Are we taking the time to acknowledge them, thank them, and reward them? It is very easy to overlook the work of many. When
an athletic team has won a championship do you ever hear them thank the trainer, the cook, the bus driver? Do they take the time
to reward them too? It takes a lot of people to create a championship team. The scripture reminds us always be cognizant of how
we treat people; Matthew 25:45 states, “ Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it
to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.” If you are the parachute, continue to be encouraged “let us not grow weary in
well doing: for in due season you shall reap if you faint not”, according to Galatians 6:9. Remain steadfast doing your good works
because every man will be judged according to his works according to Romans 2:6.

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF WOMEN
Church Of God In Christ
During the infancy of the Church Of God In Christ in the early 1900’s, the work among women had been
started, but lacked organization. A search was made for a woman capable of directing a Women’s Department.
The name Lizzie Woods, who was a matron at the Baptist Academy, was continuously brought to Elder
Mason’s attention. After inquiring, he succeeded in forming an acquaintance with her. She was introduced to
the Church of God in Christ through the preaching of Elder D. W. Delk. In may 1911, while General Overseer
Mason was holding meeting in the Academy, she received the baptism of the Holy Ghost.
Bishop Charles Mason, with the keen insight God had given him, saw that Lizzie Woods, who later became
Lizzie Woods Robinson, was an organizer, able to inspire and direct. At the General Convocation in Memphis,
Tennessee in 1911, she was appointed Overseer of the Women’s Work by Bishop Mason to organize and
create such work as would be beneficial to the church. Mother Robinson began by admonishing the women
according to Jeremiah 9:17-20, “Thus saith the Lord of host, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women,
that they may come; and send for cunning women, that they may come; and let them make haste, and take up a
wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters. For a voice of
wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we spoiled! We are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the
land, because our dwelling have cast us out. Yet hear the word of the Lord, O ye women, and let your ear
receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbor lamentation”
Observing a group of women praying and another group reading and studying the Bible, Mother Robinson
began her organization by combining the two groups together, forming the Prayer and Bible Band. This band
was designed to educate in scriptural knowledge, for the purpose of soul winning. Today this Band serves as a
doctrinal study of the Bible.
This was the beginning of the organizational structure of the Department of Women as we know it.

Youth Raffle Winner
Mother Pearl Thomas
Congratulations to Miracle Temple’s wonderful
and amazing Church Mother, Mother Pearl
Thomas on winning the Youth Raffle of a $25.00
Gift Gas Card. Miracle Temple loves you and
God bless you.
Love suffers long and is kind;
love does not envy; love does
not parade itself, is not puffed
up; does not behave rudely,
does not seek its own, is not
provoked, thinks no evil;
does not rejoice in iniquity,
but rejoices in the truth;
bears all things, believes all
things, hopes all things,
endures all things. Love
never fails. But whether there
are prophecies, they will fail;
whether there are tongues,
they will cease; whether there
is knowledge, it will vanish
away.
For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, not as Cain who
was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil
and his brother’s righteous. Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you. We know that we have
passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death.
Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the
brethren. But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him,
how does the love of God abide in him?
My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but indeed and in truth. And by this we know that we
are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our
heart, and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward
God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things
that are pleasing in His sight. And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son
Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in
us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

COGIC HISTORY OF SUNDAY SCHOOL
FUN, FAMILY,& FELLOWSHIP DAY
The first Sunday School was started in Lexington,
Mississippi, by Professor L.W. Lee in 1908. Professor Lee
was the Principal of the College at Natchez, Miss. He was
saved under Elder C. P. Jones in 1895. He was the first
Sunday School Superintendent of the Church.
In 1916 in St. Louis, Missouri Elder F. C. Christmas
( Father Christmas ) led Sunday School classes with nine
women and three men. After two months he introduced
quarterlies. Some of the Saints battle against these books.
Bishop Mason was called to St. Louis, and after seeing the
results of the Sunday School saw that it was good for the
Church.
In 1917, Overseer C. Bostic of Missouri had Eld. Christmas
come to the National Convocation to present the Sunday
School Professor Courts of Lexington, Miss. was in charge
of the National Sunday School. After hearing Father
Christmas, Professor Courts acknowledged that he was the
man for the job. Mother Lizzie Robinson also believed that
Father Christmas was the man for the job.
In 1924, Elder F. C. Christmas was appointed National
Superintendent of Sunday School by Bishop Mason. After
building the Sunday School Department in every state, a
Assistant was needed. Elder L. C. Patrick was added to the
National Sunday School. In 1944 Bishop Patrick became
the National Superintendent. A National Sunday School
Congress along with YPWW Congress began to meet in
1946. In 1951, the First National Sunday School
Convention convened in Kansas City. Missouri.
In 1945 Bishop S. Crouch of Northern California appointed
Elder H. C. Johnson as State Sunday School
Superintendent, He in turn appointed Missionary Lucille
Cornelius to be his Chairlady, the First in woman to work
with the women in the Sunday Department. Mother Jones
of Arkansas became the first National Field Representative
under Bishop Patrick. In 1967 Bishop C. W. Williams
became the National Sunday School Superintendent.
In 1968 under the direction of Bishop Roy Winbush of
Louisiana, the Publishing House in Memphis, Tenn. was
started. In 1993 Bishop Jerry Macklin of California was
appointed National Superintendent. Along with him is Sis.
Gloria Smith of Washington as his National Field
Representative.
In Memphis 1999 the International Sunday School was
truly International, the Sunday School was live on the web

reappointed to take to Sunday School new and greater
levels, Along with newly appointed Evangelist Cloelia
Penix along with (3) Vice Presidents Supt. Rodney Atkins,
