Community Gardens at Margate Church
Margate church has just commenced the first stage of a community
garden in a vacant block behind the church hall, in co-operation
with Reclink Australia. The agreement with the Margate church is to
prepare a garden, with the food being distributed to the needy, a great
opportunity to support and connect with our community.
Following a meeting on the Margate church site recently with John
Ballis (CEO), Peter Cullen (founder) and Sarah Young, and some
Margate church members, Theo Dimitriou was invited to co-ordinate
the project’s early planning, until a Reclink supervisor arrives on-site
on December 14.
Reclink has been involved over the past 25 years with many
community and
church projects throughout Australia, but this is the first time they
have been involved with a Seventh-day Adventist church in Australia.
John Ballis, comments that Reclink has a focus on rebuilding lives
and among other projects, is committed to delivering work readiness
programs to promote well-being and assist participants in developing
work skills which contribute to each job seeker’s future employability,
and have to date assisted 80,000 people with their activities.
The founder Peter Cullen also commented “We need to encourage and
empower people with their lives - this surely is one of the greatest
ways to help people.” The Margate church looks forward to this opportunity to build bridges

‘Operation Rescue’
Rescuing the King Island Church from Oblivion

It was two years ago, almost to the month, that faithful Adventist patriarch, Laurie Morgan,
passed to his rest only a couple of weeks shy of his 95th birthday. That left Freddy as the
only Adventist King Island resident regularly attending our monthly worship services.
I began my monthly visits to King Island in June 2009 and I quickly
became aware that we had a beautiful church near the centre of the
main town, Currie, and twice on Sabbath mornings I had turned up
wishing to participate in fellowship and worship. However, I was
soon to learn that not long before the death of Nora Morgan (Laurie’s
wife) less than a year earlier, this aged but very faithful couple had
stopped opening up the church each week. Any infrequent gettogether now happened in Laurie’s home.
It was against this backdrop that I met up with Barry Whelan who
still works full-time as a palliative care minister. Back in the early

1980s, Barry was our resident Adventist minister on King Island for two and a half years. He
organised the building of the church with help from the locals and he was the dynamo, under God, responsible for
building up the church membership to around 40. Barry is well-remembered, much-loved and highly-respected by
the locals.
It was during Barry’s visit to conduct Laurie’s funeral that he and I shared the burden we felt for the King Island
Church, and its people, and our keen determination to do something about rescuing the Church from oblivion. We
agreed that church services had to happen every week – not just once or twice a month – and that they definitely
needed to happen in the Church.
So early in 2014 I sought out sponsorships and we raised enough money for Barry and me to fly over to the Island
on a weekly basis for 2 months. (Each return airfare costs almost $400!) We agreed to review our involvement after
this trial period. Of course once we started there was no way that God was going to allow us to stop. Barry and I, to
conserve funds, now take it in turns to fly over to the Island to lead the worship service each week.
Financially, the Lord has continued to provide through donations from family and a few friends, plus support from the
Leongatha and Yarra Valley Adventist Churches in Victoria. Barry and I also put in. And the Tasmanian Conference
also helps with one return airfare each month!
Our first service in the re-opened Church happened at Easter time last year – 19 months ago. Remember, we started
with one - but we now have 22 (including Barry and me) on our informal roll – that’s a praise-worthy increase of
19 attendees in 19 months. It’s amazing what can happen, even in a place of only 1500 population, when people
start talking and sharing and when the wonder of God’s great love is promoted. Only 9 of these 22 are formal SDA
members and much of the growth has come about when non-members have spread the word amongst their nonmember friends.
Boosting our numbers, and offering the potential of strong local leadership, has been the prospect of the arrival of a
South African family of four. This family farmed pecan nuts in rural South
Africa and, looking to escape this country’s political instability, have bought a
cattle property on King Island. The delightful thing is that they have said that
they would not have considered settling on King Island if there had not been
an active Adventist church on the Island.
Also pleasing is that 8 of our 22 attendees are in the 15 – 35 age range. This
augers well for the Fellowship’s future; in contrast the other King Island
churches have virtually no attendees in this age bracket.
Recently, we’ve had people asking us to commence Bible Studies. It is
amazing to see how God has worked and is continuing to work. To God be the
glory, great things He is doing – even on King Island!
Scottsdale Church Community Initiatives
November saw the
Scottsdale church out
and about in their
community sharing and
caring. With two shows
and a new venture,
‘Tween Team’, they are
reaching out and filling
community needs.
First up was the Ringarooma Show where ‘Health Age’
summaries, with the opportunity to just have a blood
pressure check, were offered. Information about healthy
eating and Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD) and
the damage it can cause to unborn babies was also given
out freely.

surprised at their outcome,
some were good and we
suggested others to go and
see their doctor.
Free mock-tails were
offered to waiting people
and those wandering
past the health van. They
enjoyed a non-alcoholic
drink and when informed
about the damage that
could be done by drinking alcohol while pregnant, some
people were surprised, but they readily took brochures to
read and share.
We also managed to do a little evangelism to a couple who
we have invited to come along to our church.
Vicki Knight took care of the Health checks while Annette
Rainbow made the mock-tails.
Then on the 14th November, approximately 65 people
visited the health van at the Scottsdale Show. This year
a number of young people came through that were
concerned about their health. One young person (about
17) returned with his mother and encouraged her to have
a health check. So the word is getting out there, albeit
slowly, and the more we get out there the faster the word
will get around. Not only on living a healthy life style but
the dangers of alcohol and drinking while pregnant. Health
checks done by Vicki Knight, Natasha Jordan and Diane
Fletcher-Way, and Annette Rainbow made the Mock-tails

Tween Team
As a follow on from Tween
camp Vicki Knight organised
a night for the Scottsdale
Tweens to get together and
do craft, sing, eat and most
of all praise God. Our first
get together on the 20th
November turned out very
well. The Tweens had fun making balloon animals then
trying to get an Oreo biscuit from their forehead to their
mouth without touching it. Some of the faces the kids made
were so funny as they wiggled their noses and squinted
their eyes to get this biscuit into their mouths. We also
enjoyed some yummy haystacks for tea.
The Tween Team get together will be held every second
Friday of the month, so come along and have a great time
while worshiping our gracious Lord and Father.

Farewell Tasmania
So much of our story is tied to Tasmania’s
church family. Joanna and I first met at an
Adventist cooking school at Hilliard Christian
School. We were married here. While
travelling the world serving Christ, it has
served as our home base. Truly, Tasmania is
an integral part of our lives together. But now
has come the time to discover the next chapter in God’s plans for
our lives. On January 13, 2016, we will be departing the shores
of Tasmania on a one-way ticket to the United States. Joanna has
spent her entire life here and she will miss all of her family and
friends dearly. From our hearts, with the love of Christ, thank you
all for what you have meant to us. May God bless you and keep
you. May you follow his path for your lives, as we now follow his
path for ours. If they should ever intersect again, we will thank
God for it. And if not, we will see you on that great and glorious
day when all things will be made new.

October 2015. Ivy is a faithful member
and attends church regularly as her health
allows.

Big Camp 2016 is nearly upon us and the applications are rolling

Russell Burrill will be the
keynote speaker in the
Big Tent.
Russell Burrill was
born in Haverhill,
Massachusetts of Baptist
parentage. He became
an Adventist in his
late teens through the
ministry of the Voice of
Prophecy. He graduated
from Atlantic Union College with a B.A. in Theology in 1963 and
married Cynthia Hartman, who also graduated the same year
with a B.A. in Elementary Education. He received an M.A. from
the seminary at Andrews University and a D.Min. from Fuller
Theological Seminary. The Burrills have two children: Jim,
who serves at IT director for a nursing home chain in Orlando,
Florida, and a daughter, Ruth Davis. She and her husband pastor
are ministering in the Potomac Conference. In addition Russell
and Cynthia have six grandchildren. In 2013 they celebrated 50
years of marriage.
Russell and Cynthia’s ministry include seven years pastoring
in Connecticut and Maryland, followed by seven years full-time
evangelism in Mountain View, Chesapeake, and Upper Columbia
Conferences, followed by another seven years pastoring in
Spokane, Washington and Wichita, Kansas. From 1985-2007,
Russell has been Director of the North American Division
Evangelism Institute, for seven years in Chicago, and from 19932007, in Berrien Springs, Michigan. He taught at the Andrews
University Theological Seminary, where he held the faculty rank
of Professor. Since his retirement in July 2007, he has been
Professor Emeritus of Evangelism and Church Growth. From
2005-2007 he was also elected as NAD Ministerial Secretary and
NAD Global Missions Director.
Russell is the author of numerous articles, the Prophecy Seminar
lessons, and nine books: The New World Order, Revolution
in the Church, Radical Disciples for Revolutionary Churches,
The Revolutionized Church of the 21st Century, Recovering an
Adventist Approach to the Life and Mission of the Local Church,
Rekindling a Lost Passion, Hope When Your World Falls Apart,
Creating Healthy Adventist Churches through Natural Church
Development, Waking the Dead, Reaping the Harvest , How to
Grow an Adventist Church. and the latest: Adventist Evangelistic
Preaching. In addition, he authored “The Pastor’s Manual for Net
‘98.”
The Burrill’s are currently retired and living in Berrien Springs,
Michigan where they continue to serve as head elders of the
Pioneer Memorial Church on the campus of Andrews University.
Bible Study Time - with David Asscherick.
David is a Light Bearers speaker, pastor of the Kingscliff SDA Church in Australia and co-founder of ARISE. With
a gifted clarity that wins both heart and mind, he has spent the last 15 years traveling the globe preaching and
teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. His first book, God In Pain, offers penetrating insights to the nature and
existence of evil and suffering in the light of the Cross. He and his wife Violeta are the happy parents of two boys,
Landon and Jabel. They enjoy backpacking, climbing, running, fly fishing, and reading.
Youth Tent
Ashley Smith is a passionate 24 year old speaker and
pastor of Murwillumbah SDA church. Since his call to
ministry, he has been asked to speak both nationally
and internationally. He currently resides in Kingscliff,
NSW and enjoys hiking, playing sport and spending
time with family and friends.
The theme in the Youth tent is ‘Saved to Serve’.

Pastor Ben Tavao is from Perth WA, he and his wife are busy
leading souls to Christ through their friendship evangelism
campaign through their community garden and community
kitchen projects.
Pastor Ben has seen many come to Christ whom he has baptised
and discipled from the community through these projects and
his talks and hopes to lead more into an intimate knowledge
and relationship with Christ.
Ben is down to earth and knows what it means to live in the real world. We will find that Ben
will use part of his life to shine and share Christ.
He will be speaking on the theme of GPS, ‘God’s Plan of Salvation.’
The Jets will also be having outings, crafts and meetings.

This year we are pleased to announce our special guest speaker Tiyana
Grant, from the Central Coast, New South Wales. She spent last year

(2014) working at the Central Coast Adventist School as the chaplain’s
assistant. She was involved in running chapels, worship tours as well
as leadership programs. We would ask you to pray for her as she opens
God’s word with our division.
Our morning sessions will start during the week at 11:15 am and finish at 12:30 pm. In the afternoons, our program will begin
at 2:00 pm and concluding at approximately 4:00. We will visit Ten Pin Bowling on Monday. Catch the Ulverstone Waterslide on
Tuesday and spend the day (11:15 – 4:00 pm) at Wings Wildlife Park on Wednesday. Our week’s afternoon program will conclude on
Thursday with ‘Fun Bikes’ at Ulverstone.
This year we have a new initiative that we are sure you will enjoy. We would ask you (in the evenings) to join in fellowship with your
children in the ‘Big Tent’. Camp is such a special occasion and we know that together as a family in the ‘Big Tent’ you will enjoy the
message that the Lord has prepared for you. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Kindy and Cradle Roll will be meeting during the week from 10:30 - 11:30am
and on Sabbath a special program has been organised for Sabbath School and will start at 9:30 - 10:30am. Craft will cost $5 for the
week.
Activity Passes -
Once again there will be activity passes for each division. If you purchase a weekly pass it is
cheaper than buying the daily activity pass separately. You can purchase these from the camp office. Make sure your children get in
early to get their weekly pass punched so they don’t miss out on the activities. Prices cover the activity, craft and bus transport to and
from the activities. Check above for the prices.
Happy Apple Shed
Mrs Claire Marsh is a wife, mother and registered Psychologist. She has worked for the Department of
Human Services as an Assessor and Public Servant for many years and has been the current Manager of the
Adventist Counselling Services for the Greater Sydney Conference for the past 2 years. Claire also works
for 2 of the Adventist schools in Sydney doing psychometric assessment, workshops and counselling with
students, families and staff.
“Mind Gym” is a 3-part interactive workshop series about understanding and dealing with stress,
depression and anxiety in our Christian lives. We will explore many different aspects of mental health, learn
beneficial strategies to achieve balance, and use this knowledge to put good practices into action in our
homes and relationships to strive for an emotionally healthy life. Practical resources and information will be
provided for you to take home.
Marcha William will also be presenting at the Happy Apple Shed during the week. Marcha is a medical
doctor, song writer, and pastors wife.
Chef Cook It Up Challenge -
Grab a team of 3 or 4 mates and join the
‘cook it up challenge’ on Sunday afternoon. You will be given a recipe and a box of ingredients. Come
along and vote for the people’s choice prize. Prizes will be given for: taste, presentation, food safety skills
and knowledge, team work and nutrition knowledge. Each tem MUST have at least one male participant.
Healthy Mind Party
- Thurday 21st Jan. Food platters, an encouragement box of
spiritual promises, drinks, craft. All an opportunity to focus on your spiritual, mental, emotional and social health.
Safe Food Handling Certificate
- your opportunity to get an accredited Food Handling
certificate will be on Sunday morning at 9am with Natasha Jordan. This includes watching a video, completing a unit and question
and answer time. One hour is all you will need plus time to finish the unit. Then you can hand in your unit to Natasha for marking.
Don’t miss this opportunity. Book in at the office.
Concert - Rest and enjoy beautiful music on the first Sabbath afternoon in the Big Tent as Marcha William from Healing
Harp Ministries sings well known songs and hymns and also songs that she has written.
Mission program
- is on the second Sabbath afternoon. Bring along your coins and notes for the children to
collect for the mission offering as we hear what is taking place around Tasmania and the world in the way of mission.
Camp Shop
- the Devonport Pathfinder Club will
be running the camp shop. The Camp Shop will be located at
the kitchen end of the Camp Office.
Book Hour
- Because of daylight saving and the
late time that Sabbath ends we will continue to run the Book
Hour on Sunday morning. Come along and grab a bargain or
two on Sunday 17th January between 11- 12md.

Sanitarium -
The Sanitarium breakfast will be on the first Sunday of
Camp. You can order Sanitarium goods from the Victorian ABC and pick them up at camp. Order forms are in your churches or ask for
one from the Conference Office. All orders must be sent to the Victorian ABC by the 30th December for pick up at Camp between 16 19 January.
Wills
- Trust Services make available the opportunity to get your will prepared for free with Steve Whitson. If you have recently
married, had children or have had changed circumstances you may need to change your will. If you don’t have a will, this is a prime
opportunity to get a will prepared for free. Book in now at the Conference office.
Meals
- will not be available from the kitchen this year. You will need to self cater. The camp shop
will be selling a variety of hot, cold, and frozen savouries plus grocery items to help you with your meals.
Fun Run
- get your runners on and join us at the paddock for our Camp Fun Run sponsored
by ADRA. Get out and get active! Everyone can have a go, you can run, jog or walk the circuit. No age too
young or old.
Start time is 8:00am on Sunday morning, then afterwards you can fill up on a delicious Sanitarium
breakfast!

- the Youth Department has a wonderful fun filled afternoon for you on Sunday the 17th
There will be a giant slide, face painting, craft, games, food, and more. Get together with your
family and friends and spend some great quality time connecting and enjoying your
camp neighbours.
Support the various stalls on offer, buy your lunch and maybe something
for tea as well.
If you would like to help out with one of the activities for an hour,
please contact Wendy to pop your name down.
Road to Bethlehem
The weather proved challenging, however God answered our many prayers by holding off the rain and reducing the wind
while the community travelled from the school building, along the road to the Manger. Children and adults from along
the coast (Deloraine to Wynyard) as well as two from Tullah on the West Coast, participated in helping to make the two
nights run smoothly.
A BIG thank you to all the helpers who helped for three days in assembling the tents, fencing and props - then helped to
disassemble the lot on Thursday. With the help of many hands the school grounds were returned to normal by 3pm.
The aim of the committee was once again realised to‘Share God’s story with our North West Coast neighbours’. - R2B Team

Athletics Carnival
Surf Life Savers Visit
On Thursday, 5th November,
our school, and some homeschool and other community
member children, participated in our annual athletics
carnival. Despite the weather
forecast of rain all day, we prayed
in faith that God would hold the
rain off. He did! Once we were back
at school it started to rain! Praise
God!!
Everyone had an amazing time
during the carnival, with students trying their best and even
attempting some new events! The day was so great that quite a
number of records were broken, some which had stood for many
years! We are very proud of all our students for giving their best
efforts during the day. Well done!

Many congratulations to these students.
We had a member from the Surf Life Saving Club come to visit
year 1 & 2 for a program on beach safety. We learnt about the
reason for the flags, some of the warning signs and the reason
for life savers. To help us remember the best way to keep safe at
the beach, we learnt about the word ‘FLAGS’. Each letter has a
meaning:
F is for find the flags
L is for look for the warning signs
A is for ask a life saver
G is for get a friend to swim with you
S is for sticking up your hand for help
We got to practice saving someone who is in trouble in the water!
We also learnt three types of waves: plunging, surging & spilling
waves and the different ways they break. The surf lifesaver
showed us a video about rips and what we can do to spot one,
and what to do if we get caught in a rip.
We had a great time learning about beach safety and even
dressing up!

Shoe Laces!!
Does your child know how to
tie their shoe laces? “YOUNG
children are far more likely to
know how to use a Smartphone
than to tie their shoelaces”
(The Australian 2014). In fact a poll involving 6,017 parents,
conducted by AVG Technologies, two-thirds of Australian
children between the ages of three to five years could make use
of an ipad or a Smartphone, seventy percent could play a basic
computer game, fifty eight percent could ride a bike but only
eight percent could tie their own shoe laces (The Australian
2014).
Students at Hilliard Christian School from Kindergarten to year
two had fun learning how to tie their shoelaces this term. Levi
McFadden from the Athlete’s Foot helped students to tie their
laces. Students watched a video and practiced tying laces and by
the end of the lesson some of the students had learnt how to tie
their laces, some had a better understanding of lace tying and
those who could already tie their laces learnt a new way to tie
their laces. Students enjoyed the visit and were excited about
practicing their newly acquired skill at home.

Since then, Emma has worked to ‘save animals from suffering
and create a safe place’ under the sun for them to recover and
live out their lives. Brightside has now become an important
re-homing centre for neglected and unwanted animals and rehomes hundreds of animals each year.
A special thanks to Mrs Bannister for making initial connections
with Brightside, and to Mr Darren Rabe for ‘saving the day’ and
for making the trip to Brightside possible.

places in our community. We had the pleasure
of welcoming Fire Fighters Rob, Bob, Mark and
Bill to our classroom from the Tasmanian Fire
Service. The Fire Fighters happily answered
the student’s pre-planned questions and all
of the students had a turn at wearing a fire
fighter’s hat,
coat, boots
and overalls.
The highlight of the visit was
the fire truck and all of the
students thoroughly enjoyed
sitting in the fire truck,
looking at the hoses, checking
out the electronic maps of
nearby fires still burning and turning on the siren.

Events in life are very often the result
of a chain of events and our Kinder/
Prep excursion was no exception to
the rule. The unit on pets, and animals
in general came about as the result of
the fact that a number of the students
either had a new pet or were about to
be gifted a pet, or just simple liked the
idea of having a pet in the near future.

Leavers Dinner - the Class of 2015
On Thursday November 18 the Year 10 students descended on
The Boat House Restaurant in Cornelian Bay for their end of year
celebration. The gentlemen looked handsome in their suits and
well groomed attire and the ladies looked beautiful in their after
five dresses. The evening
was wonderful, the food was
tasty and the students were
elegant and well mannered.
The Leavers Dinner is a
time for reflection, a time
to remember the fun and
sad times and a time to look
forward to the future.

Thank you to the parents and guardians who made the evening
possible for the young people.
Thank you for allowing the staff to share and create memories
with the Class of 2015.
