basketball team. Robertson, a Baltimore, Maryland native, comes to Orangeburg and SC
State after three seasons as head coach at Bowie State (also Lady Bulldogs), where he
compiled a 53-33 record. He had his most productive campaign last season when he guided
his team to a 22-5 record and the Eastern Division Championship of the Central Intercollegiate
Athletic Association (CIAA), garnering Coach-of- the Year Honors.
Robertson earlier served as an assistant at Bowie State (1994-99), helping the university to a
126-19 mark, three straight CIAA titles and four trips to the NCAA Division II tournament.
Following his first tenure at Bowie State, he spent five seasons (2000-05) as an assistant at
Delaware State during a stretch when the Lady Hornets reached the MEAC tournament final
three times and captured the regular-season title once (2004). Robertson also served a stint as
an assistant at St. John’s (1999-2000).

ASSISTANT COACHES
Marcell Harrison, Assistant Coach
First Season
Harrison joins the SC Staff after a 13-year stint at her alma mater, George Mason University.
While on staff at George Mason, Harrison helped guide the Patriots to a 2004 Women’s National
Invitational Tournament Bid.
Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Harrison was a standout player with the Patriots, garnering
many post-season awards. As a freshman, she was named to the Colonial Athletic Association
(CAA) All-Rookie team. She was named first-team All CAA as a junior and was a second-team
All-CAA selection as a sophomore and senior. Harrison finished her career as the school alltime steals leader with 237, and currently ranks second in that category. Harrison also ranks
fourth-all-time in 3-point field goals made with 143, and is fifth in both assists (421) points
(1,499).
Originally from Troy, NY, Harrison received her sociology degree from George Mason in 1994.
Antonio O. Davis, Assistant Coach
Second Season
Antonio O. Davis is in his second season as an assistant women's basketball coach at South
Carolina State University. Davis joined the SC State staff in 2007 after serving as the head
women’s basketball coach at Saint Augustine’s College from 2001-2007.
During Davis’ tenure at Saint Augustine’s, the Lady Falcons won the Central Intercollegiate
Athletic Association (CIAA) Highest GPA Award for Women’s Basketball four straight years
while consistently contending for CIAA Championship honors on the court.
Davis developed his reputation as a master-builder as head coach at Livingstone College
(1988-91) and Kentucky State (1993-98) before he was hired at Saint Augustine’s. While at
Kentucky State, Davis took over a program that was at the bottom of the Southern
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and revived it to one of the best teams in the country.
Under Davis, Kentucky State earned consecutive 20-win seasons, made its first NCAA Tournament appearance, won a
season-record 26 games, nabbed three straight division titles, a tournament championship and was nationally ranked. Davis
was also the first coach in SIAC history to win both basketball and volleyball conference championships.
Before becoming a head coach, Davis was one of the greatest players in CIAA history at Livingstone College. A standout
scoring guard during his playing days in the 1980’s, Davis was inducted into the Livingstone College Athletic Hall of Fame
for his basketball exploits in the summer of 2005. His many accomplishments included leading the nation in scoring at 35
points per game and in free-throw shooting twice. Davis has a career free throw percentage of 94%, which ranks as one of
the highest in college basketball history. He is Livingstone College’s career leading scorer with over 1,800 points.
Davis earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Livingstone College and earned a Master of Science in history from North
Carolina A&T. Coach Davis is married to Nichelle B. Davis.
La’Nette Dillard, Assistant Coach
First Season
La’Nette Dillard begins her first season as an assistant women’s basketball coach at SC State.
Dillard joins the SC State staff after serving two seasons as an assistant at Pasadena City
College (PCC) in Pasadena, CA. During her two seasons, PCC was very successful, finishing
the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons as the California Community College Athletic Association
(CCCAA) Southern California Bracket Champions. This past season, PCC reached the semifinals of the CCCAA State Tournament. Dillard spearheaded bringing in All-South Coast
Conference guard Yolonda Johnson to the PCC program.
Prior to her stint at PCC, Dillard spent three seasons at Los Angeles Southwest College.
She began her coaching career in 2001 at West LA College as an assistant.
A community college athlete herself at one time, Dillard was a four-year varsity player at
Westchester High School before playing two seasons at West LA from 1997-1999. An AllWestern State Conference honorable mention, Dillard prided herself on being a top defensive player and helped the Oilers
advance to the state playoffs in 1998.
Dillard is a 2004 graduate of Cal State Dominguez Hills where she received her Bachelor of Arts in public
administration and criminal justice. She recently received her master’s in physical education from Azusa Pacific University
(2008).
SC STATE UNIVERSITY 2008
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL OUTLOOK
The Changing of the Guard
The 2008-09 basketball season will begin a new era for the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs. This year’s team will be under the
leadership of first-year coach Doug Robertson, who comes to Orangeburg after spending the last three seasons running another Lady
Bulldog team, Bowie (Md.) State University. Robertson, who brings 14 years of experience to the SC State program, will inherit nine of
eleven letter winners – including the top three scorers and two leading rebounders -- from last season’s 13-17 team.
SC State enjoyed some late-season success a year ago, winning five of its last-nine contests and advancing to the
quarterfinal round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament for the first time in four seasons. The ’08-09 edition of
Lady Bulldog basketball hopes to build on that success.
And, this year’s squad has the personnel in place to do just that, as four seniors, three juniors, and three freshmen fill the
roster. The team will be bolstered by the return of one of the top players from two seasons ago who sat out the 2007-08 campaign due
to a knee injury.
Junior Sophilia Hipps, the second-leading scorer last year, will be the cornerstone of the backcourt, which will rely heavily on
newcomers to play alongside the Spencer, NC native. Help at the guard position will be provided by Raina Chambers, but all three of
the freshman should figure into the game plan. The young players must mature quickly if Robertson’s team is to improve on last
year’s showing.
“Despite our youth, we should see some improvement at the guard position, especially in our ball-handling and decision
making,” says Coach Robertson. “We will make mistakes early but towards the end of the season, it should all come together.”
The Lady Bulldog frontcourt, perhaps the strongest in recent years at SC State, will be led by senior center Marie Reid, last
year’s top scorer. Joining Reid in the frontcourt will be two other seniors -- Jenell Moore, who can easily average a double-double, and
Kristin Johnson, who also was a major contributor last season. The play of the frontcourt will, without a doubt, dictate the success of
the Lady Bulldogs this year.
Guards
The guard position will be the most inexperienced unit of the 2008-09 Lady Bulldogs. Of seven players listed at the position, only four
have collegiate experience. The top returnee at the position is Hipps, second on the team in scoring last season with 13.4 points per
contest. She should continue to be one of the top guards for the Lady Bulldogs and among the finest in the MEAC. In addition to
contributing 13.4 points per game and shooting 80 percent from the charity stripe, Hipps led the conference in free-throw percentage
(81 %). She was also ranked in the MEAC in scoring (11th); 3-point field goal percentage (2nd); 3-point field goals made (4th) and
assists (13th).
While Hipps is definitely a solid guard, Coach Robertson will have to rely on support for her from redshirt Brittany Gillespie, who will
have to work through some kinks as she returns to the hardwood after sitting out all of last season with an injury, and this year’s
newcomers. During the 2006-07 season Gillespie provided some much-needed spark off the bench. She averaged 5.1 points and 3.3
rebounds in 29 games. Sophomores Patience Figgins and Dana Lewis gave SC State some solid minutes as freshmen, but will need
to play much bigger roles this season. Figgins averaged 6.5 points and 4.2 rebounds and Lewis averaged 1.7 points while shooting 81
percent from the free-throw line.
Help should come from freshman Raina Chambers, a quick guard who can score. Chambers, 5-2, from Pontiac, MI (Pontiac
Northern HS), has good ball handling skills and makes good decisions with the ball. Another freshman guard who could figure into the
scheme of the Lady Bulldogs is Lateia Brailey. Brailey, 5-3, who is a hometown girl from Orangeburg, SC (Orangeburg-Wilkinson HS),
can help provide scoring from the backcourt. A third freshman guard who should battle for a starting role is Brijan Turner. Turner, 5-6,
Cypress, TX (Cyfair HS) is an excellent shooter from short range as well as on the perimeter.
Guard/Forwards
The position that is often overlooked but is very important is the combo position of guard/forward. This position was the “X” factor for
SC State last season and could very well be the same this season. Juniors Kristin Johnson and LaKeshia Scott head up a cast that
could determine the outcome of any game for the Lady Bulldogs.
Johnson, a 5-10, senior, from Stone Mountain, GA, (Greenforest Academy) averaged 5.1 points and 4.6 rebounds last
season. She is a very intense and focused player who will be looked upon to provide more offense this season.
Despite playing limited minutes last season, Scott, a 5-1 North Charleston, SC (Hanahan HS) native, is a player that Coach
Robertson will be able to count on night in and night out. She averaged 2.2 points and 2 rebounds in just 7.4 minutes per contest.
Joining the team in the combo position is junior Shontavious Wylie. Wylie, who served as the team manager the last two
seasons, brings an aggressive nature to combo position. She hails from Rock Hill, SC where she was a varsity basketball player at
Rock Hill High School.
Forwards
The lone forward on this year’s squad is Samantha Daniels. Daniels, a 6-3 sophomore from Miami, FL (Parkway Academy),
is a player with a lot of heart. Once she learns the new system, she will be expected to bring intensity to the post.
Centers
Controlling the paint for the 08-09 Lady Bulldogs will be two of the most dominate post players in the MEAC. Seniors Jenell Moore and
Marie Reid make up, arguably, the best post tandem that has played for SC State in recent years.
Moore, 6-2, from Raleigh, NC, continued to show maturity on and off the court last season. She is the leader of the team and
plays with a high level of energy and passion. Last season she averaged just shy of a double-double -- 9.9 points and 9.6 rebounds.
Her conference numbers were just as impressive as she led the conference in overall and defensive rebounding. She was also ranked
fourth in the conference in field-goal percentage.
Reid came on strong during conference play last season. She led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring, averaging 14.7 points. In the
MEAC, her averaged jumped to 17.2 points per game. A 6-4 Augusta, GA native, Reid was second in the conference in field-goal
percentage and was also ranked in scoring (6th) and blocked shots 5th).
The Schedule
SC State will open the 2008-09 season with a competitive non-conference schedule that should provide it the preparation needed to be
successful during the conference season. For the first time in two seasons, the Lady Bulldogs will open up at home and for the second
straight season they will open with Mercer University. The season is set to begin on November 18 at the Smith-Hammond-Memorial
Center on the campus of SC State. The non-conference schedule also has SC State facing Furman, Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb,
College of Charleston, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, North Carolina Central, and USC-Upstate. The Lady Bulldogs will also
face Winston-Salem State twice. While both match-ups against Winston-Salem State are considered MEAC contests, they will not
count towards the MEAC standings. MEAC competition begins in January when SC State travels to Dover, DE for the first time in two
years to take on the Lady Hornets of Delaware State January 10. The first home conference game will be January 24 when the Lady
Bulldogs host Norfolk State University.
