Maryland’s economy and consumer spending remain strong due to strong federal government and healthcare
facilities, non-profits and a growing technology and telecommunications sector. The Baltimore area will see an
economic boon with growth at Ft. Meade & Aberdeen Proving Grounds as the military consolidates bases.
Maryland has the highest median HH Income in the nation at $65,114 – 34% above the national median.
Maryland is ranked # 2 in percent of employed population in Professional and related occupations. Maryland
has the lowest percent of people below the poverty level in the USA. Source: US Census Bureau

STATION SPECIFIC INFORMATION
WJZ is Baltimore’s #1 station (Nov’09). Market Coverage: VHF stations WJZ, WBAL, and WMAR cover all 11
DMA Counties, whereas UHF Stations WBFF, WNUV, and WUTB cover primarily Baltimore City and Baltimore
County. Source: NSI Ratings
WJZ (CBS) and WBAL (NBC) over-index their networks’ shares; WMAR (ABC) and WBFF (FOX) under-index.
Strong FOX station in D.C. (WTTG) spills into Baltimore through cable penetration, diluting viewership of WBFF.
Source: NSI Ratings
WJZ has Baltimore’s only 3 hour local news block in the early evening (4-7PM) including Baltimore’s only 4PM
local newscast. WJZ airs more Local News than any other station in the market.
WJZ is Baltimore’s Sports Station, airing both local professional teams (NFL Ravens, MLB Orioles), 2 different
Football programs (Raven’s Post Game and Football Talk), CBS Golf and Tennis coverage and NCAA March
Madness featuring the Maryland Terrapins.

WJZ NEWS ANCHORS
As anchor of WJZ 13's Eyewitness News at 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. along with Sally
Thorner, Kai Jackson brings many Baltimoreans their first news of the evening. He
lets them know what has happened in the region and world during the day.
His steady calm and warm smile make him an area favorite – just the person to "invite"
into your home for an hour each night as you digest the day's news.
Kai was hired by the station as a general assignment reporter in 1993 and quickly
moved up the ladder, becoming co-anchor of the weekend editions of Eyewitness
News. Kai joined Sally Thorner on the 5 p.m. news in 1999.
The station frequently sends him out into the field to report live from hot spots around the region or to anchor the news
from remote locations.
Sally Thorner anchors Eyewitness News at Five--a news program named "Baltimore's
Best 5:00 p.m. TV News Show" a few years back by Baltimore Magazine. She also
anchors the 4:00 p.m. newscast. This quick-witted broadcast journalist also has been
the focus of cover stories in a range of publications, from Baltimore Magazine to The
Jewish Times. Along with anchor Kai Jackson, Sally provides the early evening news
for a wide range of Marylanders tuned in for the fast paced newscasts that
demonstrate the characteristic energy and accuracy of Eyewitness News.
When Sally came to Baltimore, she worked for competing news station, WMAR, but
elected in 1993 to join Maryland's News Station, WJZ.
Thanks to Sally's multi-dimensional talents, Eyewitness News has won a number of Emmy Awards.
Sally is as active off the air as she is on camera. Deeply committed to such personal causes as Parkinson's disease
and breast cancer–which her late mother suffered from--she also honors her parents by putting into practice the values
they taught--the importance of giving back to the community.
When Marylanders look for evening news, their favorite news team is WJZ 13's Vic Carter
and Denise Koch, who anchor Eyewitness News at 4:30, 6:00 and 11:00 p.m.
Vic has brought local viewers in touch with some of the nation's biggest stories, from
Capitol Hill and White House matters to breaking events in Atlanta, Cuba and even Deep
Space.
His career in broadcast journalism has taken him around the world, reporting from Cuba,
Colombia, South America, Liberia, Kenya and Europe.
Political news is of special interest to Vic, who has met and/or interviewed six United States presidents, covered two
presidential campaigns and several national political conventions.
Vic started in television two days after he graduated cum laude from Morehead State University in 1978. At the age of 23,
he received the George Foster Peabody Award, broadcasting's most prestigious honor. He was named Journalist of the
Year by The School of Journalism at the University of Georgia and was inducted into the National Association for Black
Journalists Hall of Fame.
WJZ NEWS ANCHORS
Viewers turn to Denise Koch and Vic Carter -- anchors of WJZ 13's Eyewitness News at
4:30, 6:00 and 11:00 p.m.— for their credible reports presented by the veteran news
team in Baltimore.
The Emmy Award–winning journalist has traveled to such exotic locations as China,
Jamaica and West Africa to report the news. Denise also covers the homefront from
locations around the U.S. and Maryland, bringing local, national and world events into
sharp focus for Channel 13 viewers.
Even sports fans are familiar with Denise's work, which has included covering Baltimore's search for an NFL team in
Chicago to the Ravens quest for the Super Bowl trophy in Tampa.
For a number of years, viewers met many of Maryland's most fascinating citizens on her interview show called "Get To
Know." Many high school students benefited from watching her series on a group of Baltimore teens who went to West
Africa in 1992 and shared their experiences to home audiences via WJZ 13. That same series was shown at local
museums and at the National Post Office in the nation's capital.
Her journalistic efforts have garnered Denise a host of awards in addition to the aforementioned Emmys. The Society of
Professional Journalists honored her for her reports from China, titled "Baltimore East." Her series on troubled students in
the city schools' Future Program earned her both a Maryland State Teachers Association award as well as a national
Angel award. The list doesn't stop here.
WJZ WEATHER
When skies turned cloudy, some little boys would catch frogs. Not Bob Turk. He caught
the rain. According to his mother, Bob created a rain well and device for measuring
precipitation. Collecting that data was "fun."
Today, it's still fun and part of Bob's everyday routine as Baltimore's most respected
weathercaster--the person viewers depend on for weather updates during weekday
evening newscasts on Channel 13.
It was Bob who helped WJZ select the Doppler radar weather system known as First Warning Weather and put the station
further on the map as the first Baltimore television station to have such sophisticated weather forecasting technology.
First Warning Weather's local live Doppler radar enables the weather team to track rain and storms from neighborhood to
neighborhood.
Bob, who has been an associate member of the American Meteorological Society since 1975, earned a B.S. degree in
geography from the then-named Towson State College and Master's degree in the same subject from the graduate school
of Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
WJZ WEATHER
Tim Williams has the sort of engaging personality and poised self confidence that
makes even viewers who don't like to get up on the weekends come alive with smiles.
He anchors the weekend morning newscasts with Jessica Kartalija. He also lets
viewers know whether their Saturday afternoon cookouts will be washouts or whether
to invest in window air conditioners to prep for a Sunday heat wave.
Tim also reports on breaking news and other unfolding events of interest to residents
of this region.
Meteorologist Bernadette Woods graduated from Penn State University with a B.S.
degree in meteorology. She furthered her studies at L'Universite des Sciences Humaines
in Strasbourg, France.
In 2004, she was honored by the American Meteorological Society with its Television
Seal of Approval, and has received several prestigious awards for her work from
AccuWeather.
Bernadette launched her career at AccuWeather, piloting a daily streaming weather
video segment and forecasting for hundreds of media clients throughout the U.S.
Bernadette received a 2006 Emmy Award for Best Weathercaster.
WJZ SPORTS
Mark Viviano is sports director for WJZ.
Most recently, Mark was studio anchor and national correspondent for CNN-Sports
Illustrated, a position he assumed after leaving the Baltimore NBC affiliate television
station WBAL-TV in December 1999.
Baltimoreans will remember him as the weekend sports anchor and reporter for that
station, as well as for his role on sister radio stations WBAL-AM and 98 Rock FM as
the morning radio sports anchor and evening/weekend call-in host for sports–related
programming.
Mark originally came to Baltimore from the Midwest where he worked for WDTN-TV in Dayton, Ohio as weekend
sports anchor. He also served in a similar capacity at WCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Career highlights include earning national recognition as the reporter who broke the story of the Cleveland Brown
relocation to Baltimore in November 1995.
He also was selected to carry the Olympic torch through Baltimore en route to its final destination at the 1996 Summer
Olympics in Atlanta.
WJZ NEWS ANCHORS
Don Scott has spent the last quarter century watching the sun come up along side
Marty Bass on the Eyewitness News Morning Edition, dealing with the day's news,
checking in with the "live" reporters doing the breaking news beat and directing drivers
to WJZ Traffic Control updates. But a decade before that he was the guy on the street,
and having been there certainly seems to help get the "right now" stories reported better
and clearer than anywhere else.
Don came to WJZ in July of 1974 when he was just 24 and immediately found himself in
the midst of a garbage workers' strike with city police officers going out on the picket
lines themselves a day or two later. It was a hectic first week and a half, but it certainly set the pace for the next three
plus decades on the streets and in the news studio.
Don and Marty also anchor the noon newscast along with Mary Bubala and a tag team of Meteorologists Bernadette
Woods and Tim Williams -- a broadcast that often doubles the audience of any on at the same time!
Prior to WJZ, Don worked in Dayton, Ohio as weekend anchor. Before that, he was news director and anchor at WLIOTV in Lima, Ohio.
Baltimoreans rise and shine with the dynamic morning duo of Marty Bass and Don
Scott. Some viewers may even skip their morning cups of java as long as they get
their fix of Marty in the morning. Known for his unique take on everyday events, Marty
also preps area residents to handle the day's weather with his series of early morning
and noon weather reports.
Marty started in the broadcasting business in high school, working part-time as a disc
jockey at a local radio station in the Louisville, Kentucky area – the place where he
grew up. His passion for broadcast only accelerated with time. He went on to graduate from Southern Illinois University
in Carbondale with a degree in radio/television, and then entered broadcasting fulltime.
His early jobs were in radio but professional journalists encouraged him to switch to the television side. He took their
advice, working in television markets east of the Mississippi before joining the Eyewitness News family in 1977.
Marty holds the distinction of helping to define early morning news for the broadcast business by anchoring Baltimore's
first early morning newscast. As for his co-anchor at the time? The indomitable Oprah Winfrey, who worked for the
station during the early '80s.
Marty also initiated the concept of "Just the fax, Internet and e-mail," inviting viewers to add their comments and
opinions during the live morning newscasts. This interaction between viewers only served to cement the audience
connection to WJZ 13's Rise and Shine/Morning Edition and helped make the "Don and Marty" team a model for other
stations to follow.

Community Commitment
WJZ has a stellar reputation of creating comprehensive campaigns that address prominent issues
and needs in the community. WJZ partners with a myriad of non-profit organizations to sponsor
events that raise funds for a variety of worthwhile causes. WJZ’s continuing community
commitment highlights the people, places and things that make Maryland great.
WJZ’s Black History Oratory Contest:
Inspirational and motivational quotes from noted African Americans form the basis of this annual
oratory contest open to all high school students in Maryland. Students write original essays based
on supplied quotes then present their memorized essays at a public forum where they are
evaluated by a panel of judges and awarded prizes. The top three students receive monetary and
other prizes in this contest that has been gaining in popularity since it began in 1993.
Baltimore Orioles/MASN/WJZ Food Drive
This annual three-day food drive held at Oriole Park at Camden Yards during an Orioles threegame home stand raises both money and non-perishable food for the Maryland Food Bank. WJZ
reporters and anchors alongside Oriole personnel collect thirty thousand dollars and ten thousand
pounds of food from generous baseball fans entering the ballpark.
New Year’s Eve Spectacular
WJZ partners with the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts to sponsor the city’s annual endof-year event featuring musical entertainment and fireworks. WJZ broadcasts a live New Years Eve
Special from 11pm through the conclusion of the fireworks at 12:30am.
Dick Gelfman’s Ride Across Maryland
WJZ joins with the television station’s former consumer reporter, Dick Gelfman, to raise funds for
breast cancer in this three-day motorcycle fundraising event. Bikers from all walks of life ride from
every corner of the state to celebrate their camaraderie in Ocean City while raising over $1.2 million
for breast cancer programs in just seven years.
Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Festival of Trees
For 19 years, WJZ has helped to make the three-day festival a destination event while raising funds
for the research, treatment and education programs of Kennedy Krieger Institute. If Santa had a
theme park, this would be it! Fairyland forests, toy train gardens and gingerbread towns along with
craft boutiques and entertainment make the holidays merry and bright for the entire family.
Great Prostate Cancer Challenge
The newest of WJZ’s campaigns raises awareness of this male disease through a series of
outreach initiatives including free prostate screenings. The annual 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Walk
generates funding for medical research into this disease that affects one in six men.
