7Permanent Hair Removal
Keys to Successful
When it comes to permanent hair removal, getting each step just
right is an art form! To achieve quick and permanent results, it is
not enough to simply perform the treatments; one must be able to
effectively combine all the necessary steps. Here are 7 key factors to
guarantee successful hair removal treatments to your clients.
Karine Beaumont,
Vice-President,
Dectro International, Québec, Canada
the right treatment option
1 Match
to each client
treatments during
2 Perform
the right phase of hair growth
An initial consultation is required before any hair
removal treatments can begin. During this first
meeting, you must obtain information about your
client’s medical history, observe the condition of
the skin, as well as the density and type of hair
to be removed. Based on your observations, you
will be able to choose the most appropriate treatment option for your client. It is not up to the client to make this choice. You must provide each
of your clients with advice regarding suitable
treatments. For example, electroepilation (electrolysis) is more effective than photoepilation for
both dark-skinned patients and those with blond
hair. On the other side, if your client has dark hair
and pale skin or a large region to treat, photoepilation would maybe a quicker way to treat. In
many cases, it is very effective to combine several methods of hair removal. Regardless of the
treatment option recommended, it is essential to
clearly explain the treatment options being offered and the anticipated results. This will ensure
client satisfaction.
Once you chose a treatment option, you will need
to ensure it is performed during the right phase
of hair growth. For non-permanent hair removal
options, such as waxing, the growth phase is not
important. However, to achieve permanent hair
removal, treatments must be performed during
the anagen phase in order to fully destroy the hair.
In fact, it is during this phase that follicles contain
the most cells responsible for hair growth, and
hair has the most pigmentation. Photoepilation
uses a light or laser which targets pigmentation.
The pigmented hair absorbs the photons and
heat. It is this heat that promotes the destruction
of germ cells responsible for hair growth. Thus,
cell destruction is not possible when there is no
hair pigmentation, notably during the telogen
phase. It is recommended to also perform electrolysis during the anagen phase, but hair in the
catagen and telogen phases can also be treated. During electroepilation, an electric current is
emitted at the base of the follicle, which heats the
surrounding tissues in order to eliminate growth
cells. For electrolysis, the amount of pigments
is not important, but the goal remains the same
for each method, that being the destruction of a
maximum number of growth cells.
When choosing photoepilation or electrolysis,
it is very important to plan treatments so as to
allow for a maximum number of hairs to be synchronized into the anagen phase. You should
normally allow for an interval of 3 to 8 weeks
between treatments, depending on the area being treated and how quickly your client’s hair
grows back.

work methods
The type of equipment you use greatly impacts
the treatment outcome. When performing photoepilation, ensure your intense pulsed light device delivers enough performance. Considering
the vast number of devices on the market, very
few are truly effective, meaning they are unable
to adequately heat the hair follicles and destroy
their growth cells. Such devices would never
allow you to achieve a permanent reduction
in hair growth, resulting ultimately in customer
dissatisfaction. In the case of electroepilation,
there are many types of devices. Usually, the
higher the radio frequency and power level of
the device, the faster you will achieve permanent results. It is clear that any electrolysis device, even decades old, can lead to permanent
hair removal. However, achieving it will be longer and less comfortable for the client. Some
will be quick to draw comparisons to the performance of a motor vehicle. If you drive a small
economy car a decade old, you can still get
from point A to point B without any problems.
However, if you drive a new high-performance
vehicle, you will reach your destination more
quickly and in greater comfort. What do you
think your customers would prefer? Obviously,
they would opt for the more comfortable and
higher performance car! Several options and
resources can also improve the results. For
example, certain intense pulsed light devices
come equipped with a hand piece that can
cover a large surface area, making it possible
to complete the treatment 3 to 5 times more
rapidly than with other laser or IPL devices. In
electrolysis, insulated probes allow for more effective and targeted destruction of the growth
cells, leading to quicker permanent results.
Bottom line, to stay competitive in the skin care
industry, it is important to offer clients effective
solutions and increased comfort level.
Every electrolysis and photoepilation expert
faces the challenge of determining the most
suitable treatment parameters to ensure the
best results, which are: intensity level, number
of pulses, duration of pulses and delays. Several factors influence the selection process: the
individual hair type, the depth of hair follicles,
the particular area being treated, the hair growth
phase and density, the skin’s moisture level, the
client’s phototype and sensitivity, the treatment
device, etc. Usually, the greater the professional’s expertise and the more established the
patient-professional relationship, the better the
evaluation. Several devices on the market are
configured to offer predefined treatment options.
Although useful, this is only a starting point.
Comprehensive training is therefore essential to
ensure the professional has the knowledge and
resources available to offer the best services
possible. The effectiveness of treatments is important, but must never compromise the comfort
and security of clients.
Adopting effective work methods not only
improves results, but also ensures greater
comfort and safety for clients throughout their
treatments. During electroepilation, a probe is
inserted into each hair follicle — a key step to
this method’s success. This technique of hair
removal requires a high level of precision. The
electrologist must actually delicately insert a
probe the size of a hair into the follicle until it
reaches the base (papilla). This is where the
electric current must be emitted for the full and
successful destruction of the growth cells to
occur. A common myth about electrolysis is
that treatments are painful. This is simply not
true! Electrolysis treatments are quite comfortable, especially when the technique is correctly
performed.Your client should not feel anything
neither when the probe is inserted, nor when
the hair is extracted. The client should only
feel a slight current lasting a few milli seconds
(ultra-rapid thermolysis). In the case of photoepilation, it is important for the IPL crystal hand
piece to come in contact with the treated area.
Be sure not to treat the same area twice, nor
to miss any hairs. A few important steps must
also be taken to prevent skin burns. This requires proper training and the right technique.
Considering that hair removal techniques are
continually evolving and manufacturers are creating more technologically advanced devices,
ongoing professional training is a basic requirement for estheticians/electrologists who want
to offer their clients the best services they can
get anywhere.

your

7 Discipline
is a must
Did you know that well hydrated skin can tolerate heat more easily? If you perform treatments using a safe but higher degree of heat,
more growth cells will be effectively destroyed
and the desired results, will be achieved more
quickly. You should advise your client to use at
home an exfoliant and moisturizer to adequately prepare his skin to the treatment. Thoroughly
moisturizing your client’s skin and performing
cataphoresis immediately after each treatment
will also promote optimal healing and regeneration. It is equally important to insist your clients
apply protection against UV rays before and
after the treatment. This will minimize the risk
of hyperpigmentation.
As previously mentioned, in order to achieve
permanent results, treatments should ideally
be performed during the anagen phase. Consequently, it is absolutely essential your clients
rigorously attend appointments which have
been set according to the hair growth phase. If
a client continually pushes back appointments,
it would only be a waste of time continuing potentially ineffective treatments during the catagen and telogen phases. Take the time to explain this to your clients so that they understand
their responsibility in guaranteeing the success
of the treatments.
As you are no doubt aware, several factors
influence the success of permanent hair removal.
Proper training, the right devices, well-informed
and cooperative clients, and the exercise of
sound professional judgement on the part of the
professional all contribute to safe, comfortable,
rapid, and above-all, effective treatments. v

Opportunities
for Estheticians
a Few Key Facts!
Joanie Morissette,
Technical Advisor,
Dectro International, Québec, Canada
The pay compensation we receive as professional beauty care service providers can be attributed
to individual lifestyle choices, needs or priorities. A personal care labor market committee (Comité
sectoriel de la main-d’oeuvre des services de soins personnels) conducted a detailed analysis of
the results of a survey led in Canada by Léger Marketing firm. In order to gain a true perspective
of the Canadian market, 320 beauty care professionals were surveyed. How do you evaluate the
following results based on your own situation?
Actuelle
fa l l - w i n t e r 2012
Being self-employed ref lects
Employers and salaried
a lifestyle choice! estheticians, working together
as a team!
82% of self-employed estheticians previously worked for an employer. The main
reasons they cited for becoming self-employed
were the need to have complete control over
their personal schedule and the potential for
increased revenue. The main reasons they
cited for becoming self-employed were
the need to have complete control over
their personal schedule and the potential
for increased revenue.
Here are a few challenges self-employed
estheticians face:
• Financial insecurity;
• Competition and the difficulty of building a loyal client base;
• Feeling of isolation.
Here are a few tips to overcome these
negative influences:
Financial insecurity can be minimized by facing your fears and ultimately gaining self-confidence. This is achieved by creating a pleasant
and motivating work environment that will allow
you to offer your clients a service that is second
to none. Fears of financial instability can stem
from lack of self-esteem.
Académie Dectro offers training sessions in
professional practices that will help you gain
confidence and stand out amongst your peers!
Our team also offers workshops on market
trends and developments that give you the
opportunity to share experiences and network
with other beauty care service providers.
Self-employed estheticians report a
slightly higher prevalence of work-related health problems, such as back aches,
tendinitis, and leg pains.
Attending a private training session with a
Dectro instructor will ensure you adopt proper
work posture. Certain aches and pains may be
caused by unsuitable work equipment. If that’s
the case, you can minimize your physical stress
and strain by customizing your work area with
more ergonomic equipment.
70% of salaried estheticians wish to
remain with their employer over the next
5 years. That said, 21% wish to change
employer for better work conditions and
19% seek to broaden their professional
expertise.
As with any other industry, whether you are selfemployed or salaried, both have their advantages and disadvantages. Consequently, it is
essential for you to choose a work situation that
meets your needs. Clearly identify your needs
and consider your ability to manage the stress
that usually goes with being self-employed,
compared to the potential lack of freedom experienced by salaried employees. Keep in mind
that nothing prevents you from switching at any
time during your career. v
Competition is often quite fierce in the beauty
care industry, especially when it comes to targeting prospective clients and recruiting highly-skilled estheticians. This is the key reason
why employers must innovate and embrace
emerging technologies, which in the fields of
esthetics and electrolysis have been gaining
in use and popularity over the last few years.
In fact, 64% of employers have spent on
average $86,709 over the last 5 years on
technological innovations. Today, the most
sought after estheticians are those with solid
experience performing intense pulsed light or
microdermabrasion, both increasingly popular
treatment options.
Furthermore, when assessing a future employee, personality and attitude account
for 40% of the selection criteria. 76% of
employers look for candidates with training in more than one specialty. Coming
in at the top of the list of beauty care services,
next in importance to esthetics, are electrolysis, massotherapy and body care treatments.
Professional recognition and a wide skill set are
high on every employer’s wish list!
Ongoing training helps estheticians to further
develop their skills and ensures greater professional motivation. Did you know that Académie Dectro offers an eleven-week electrolysis
course? We also offer this course by correspondence. Please don’t hesitate to contact
Académie Dectro for more information.
Those working in the beauty care industry often

working hours, including evening and weekend
shifts. Consequently, more and more employers now
