Carol’s Comments
Greetings. I sure have been enjoying the soft
green of the early spring. We had a good turnout and a
really nice day for our breakfast tour. The docent showing us around the Folsom Powerhouse was very knowledgeable. It was eye-opening to realize how advanced the
technology was for the time when the Powerhouse
opened. We were educated on the connection between
the establishment of the powerhouse and Folsom Prison
which was built to provide labor for building the original
dam and the powerhouse. We also learned about
the reasons we now use alternating current instead of
direct
current and the purpose of three-phase power

g e n e r a t e d .
It was a real pleasure to welcome two new members at the February meeting. We are so fortunate to
have so many members, both old and new, who are so
willing to share their skills, their time, and their experiences to support the club. I celebrate the participation of
all of you in the meetings, the tours and the
events. Janette is doing an exemplary job of organizing
the tours and other activities such as the theater party. I
can't thank her and Bill and Tom enough for their work
on the roster. We will be needing a lot of help for the
Apple Hill activities as well so be prepared for the sign
up sheets to come.

Dues are $40 per year. Dues for new members may be paid at any time. Dues
paid between November 1 and December 31 are valid for the remainder of the
year paid plus the following year. With your check send in your name, spouse's
name and complete address. An optional $10 initiation fee includes a club pin,
decal, badge, windshield card and a back issue of the" Restorer" magazine. If
you use MasterCard or Visa include the expiration date and your signature. Membership includes a subscription to the Restorer.
The Hangtown A’s Model "A" Ford Club encourages membership in MAFCA,
the national Model "A" Ford Club. Benefits include an excellent bimonthly publication, technical information and free liability insurance when participating in

CALL TO ORDER:
Meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by President Carol McLaughlin
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Carol McLaughlin led the Pledge of Allegiance.
SUNSHINE REPORT: Dale Briggs has been ill – A get well card was sent
The DeGregory family lost a brother-in-law – A condolence card was sent
Jeanette Powell announced that Ruby Nixon has not been well and requested that a card be sent.
MINUTES FOR NOVEMBER, 2015: Claude Sipe moved to accept the January minutes as published. Motion was
seconded by Dave Vestal. The motion was carried by attending members.
FINANCIAL REPORT: Beginning and ending December balances were read by incumbent Treasurer Bobby Thatcher
TOURS: Vice President Jeanette Powell announced the following scheduled events:

Jeannette announced that she had the tickets for the event at a cost of $13 each, no fees. Tickets could be
obtained at the end of the meeting.

This includes docent tour of mine, stamp mill, and wheel.
If at least 20 members indicate attendance, Theresa’s Restaurant will open for lunch with several menu
choices for $17.00/person including tax and tip.

APPLE HILL UPDATE: The following updates were given:
A request was made for a loan of $500 to open the bank account for the event. Eileen Brandstetter moved to make the
$500 loan, the motion was seconded by Howdy Walrond and carried by the attending membership.
The Capital As will loan us their Hubley track for this event.
The Bingo event is still in the works.
Baskin-Robbins is a possible supplier for the Ice Cream Social. Updates to follow.

Sharon Johnson announced that Apple Hill Registration Forms will be going out soon.

Hangtown As members will only pay $20 for the barbecue. The other registration fees will be waived
Event shirts will be available at an extra charge.
Rooms at the Best Western in Placerville will be limited to one (1) room per registered family.
A list of additional hotels will be included in the registration packets.
The event will be listed in the MAFCA and NCRG Calendars and in Chapter Chatter.
NEW BUSINESS:
Correspondence was received from Chase Bank, the CA Car Museum, the Paradise Valley Swap Meet (9/25/16) and an
announcement that there was a 1929 Roadster for sale.
A letter was received from the NCRG requesting a $.50/family dues payment ($30 total for the club). Trudy Vestal
moved to make that payment and it was seconded by Tom Jeanes and carried by the attending members.
A request was made for someone to audit the 2015 Club Financial Books. Lee Ross volunteered for this task.
Carol asked for a volunteer to compile a pre-roster listing of members. Hymie Brandstetter volunteered for this task.
OLD BUSINESS:
Trudy Vestal presented Scotty and Lee Ross with their 25 year MAFCA Pins.
The CA Car Museum donation was prepaid for 2016
Bill Lincoln is obtaining photographs for the roster. Those taken at the December, 2015 Holiday Party were routed for
acceptance by members. Additional photos were taken during the meeting.

2016 NCRG ROUNDUP
The 54th Annual NCRG Roundup is just around the corner on May 27-29 in
Modesto. There will be Fashion Judging as well as Fine Point Car Judging. There
will also be Restorer’s Class Evaluation. There will be a Gymkhana, Hubley Races, a
Barbecue, Fashion and Technical Seminars, a Grand Tour and Awards Banquet.

Folsom Power House
February 13, 2016
WOW! Everyone was ready to get out in the sunshine. So many of us dusted off our Model
A’s and came out for a great tour to the Folsom Power House Saturday.
We met at Walmart in Placerville at 8 a.m. We had a total of 13 Model A’s and 1 Modern car
with a total of 26 people sitting down for breakfast at Mary’s Gold Miner Café in Folsom.
On our way down from Placerville, at Lotus Road and Green Valley, Jim and Regina joined our
little parade. Then when we got to Rescue we slowed the group down just enough for Ernie
(who was waiting alongside the road) to jump into Tony’s Model A.
We made it to Folsom with only a minor roadside seminar when Rudy lost a side mirror.
Our rather early (8am) start was so we could be at the Café before they got too busy. It’s not a
very big café and it’s a very popular spot for breakfast in Folsom. The staff was very accommodating and as usual the food and service were great.
Another minor seminar occurred after breakfast when Rudy’s car would not start, but with a little push he was able to get it started.
Then on to the Old Folsom Powerhouse for a guided tour. Our Docent “Dan” was there waiting
for us and gave us a very informative tour. Kind of interesting to know this powerhouse supplied Sacramento with its first electricity and it was turned on in the morning around 7am then
turned off in the evening every day!!
We enjoyed great company in
perfect spring-like weather.

Fur Accents

The use of genuine furs during the Model A era was very popular, unlike today. There did not
seen to be the social consciousness relating to the preservation and protection of animals we embrace now. A woman’s prized possession was a fur piece or a garment trimmed with one of those
beautiful works of nature. Specifically fur trimmed coats and fur scarfs afforded many women
with a piece of elegance.
The fur trimmed coat used a variety of animal pelts;
fox, mink, lamb, ermine, marten, lapin (rabbit), seal,
muskrat, raccoon, and beaver just to name some of the
popular ones. Exotics were seen as well, such as leopard, caracal, monkey, and pony. Naturally the price of
the fur help to decide what a lady’s choice might be.
The greater population favored the use of fox and rabbit. Fox was especially popular as a scarf. Imitations
of some furs were also available.
Usually the coat was trimmed at the collar. However,
fur on the cuffs was also very popular. Many of you
might have fur accents in your personal collection.
Fur is prone to dry out with age. The result is usually
splitting of the pelts. Not much can be done to prevent
this occurrence as here on the west coast fur storage
lockers are not widely seen to keep your treasure in a
climate controlled environment. I store my furs lying
down in a cotton pillow case, in an acid free box or cedar chest. Hanging garments with fur or fur
pieces tends to accelerate their decline.

Fashion Facts for information and illustrations. This book can also be purchased from
MAFCA headquarters and is an excellent reference guide for fashion lovers.

FIRST TRIP
A new bride was a bit embarrassed to be known as a honeymooner. So when she and her
husband pulled up to the motel, she asked him if there was any way that they could make it appear
that they had been married a long time. He responded, “Sure. You carry the suitcases!”

PATSY
I got a call from Patsy. She told me her neighbor was so excited to learn that she was pregnant again that she was calling everyone with the good news. When she went shopping, she took
her 4 year old son, Sam, along. One of her friends shopping at the store asked the boy if he was
excited about the baby. “Yes”, he replied. “ I know what we’re going to name it. If it is a girl,
we’re calling her Molly and if it is a boy, we’re going to call it quits!”
NO GOOD HAND
I heard that Mr. Jones discovered that poker isn’t the only game that starts with holding
hands and ends with a staggering financial loss!
BETTER THAN A PAPER BAG
A woman went to her doctor’s office. She was seen by one of the new doctors, but after
about 4 minutes in the examination room, she burst out screaming and ran down the hall. An older
doctor stopped her and asked her what the problem was, and she explained. He had her sit down
and relax in another room while he marched back to the first and demanded, “What’s the matter
with you? Mrs. Terry is 63 year old, has four grown children and seven grandchildren and you
told her she was pregnant?” The new doctor smiled smugly as he continued to write on his clipboard. “Cured her hiccups thought, didn’t it?”
YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING
A young Canadian man, searching for a way of getting drunk cheaply, because he had no
money with which to buy alcohol, mixed gasoline with milk. Not surprisingly, this concoction
made him ill, and he vomited into the fireplace in his house. This resulting explosion and fire
burned his house down and had the unfortunate consequence of killing both him and his sister!
REALLY?
Question: I’m two months pregnant now. When will my baby move?
Answer: With any luck, right after he finishes college.
