Letter from the
Executive Director
It is my pleasure to address you
as the third Executive Director of
Trinity Counseling Service. I moved
into a beautiful office overlooking a
tree-lined Stockton Street in early
July. As someone who grew up in
this area, it is both c omforting and,
at times, challenging to be home.
Many things are familiar, yet a lot
has changed.
The greater Princeton area is a community that offers
excellent schools and vibrant cultural and social resources
to which most have access. Viewed from the outside, life
looks pretty good. However, when we take a closer look and
begin to ask thoughtful questions, we find that many in our
community are struggling. People in our community have
gotten used to pulling themselves up by their proverbial
bootstraps, and used to coping with stress, anxiety and/or
sadness without asking for help. Many are coping by working
longer hours, exercising harder, or drinking more red wine.
I’m not disparaging the work, exercise, red wine strategy
that may work for some, but I also believe that a critical
sign of health is knowing what else we need to keep
ourselves healthy.
The opportunity to work with a trained
professional helps one develop a capacity for
reflective functioning that can be gratifying and
enlightening, and also useful and potentiating.
We hear a lot about the importance of finding “balance” in our
lives. I recently said to a friend that sometimes the mantra of
needing to find balance becomes its own extreme. A possible
book title came to mind: Balance: Until You Fall Over. So as a
person tired of hearing how I need to find ways to find more
“balance” in my life, I began thinking about what a ctually
makes me feel healthier. Eating well, exercising r egularly and
getting enough sleep are critical, but something else also
came to mind—a concept known as “reflective functioning.”
Reflective functioning refers to the ability to reflect on one’s
experiences, the capacity to know how experiences effect us,
to understand better why we react the way we do to c ertain
situations, and to be able to be curious about ourselves and

Trinity Counseling Service
(TCS) is a private, not-for-profit, 501(c)3, community
counseling agency providing comprehensive and compassionate care to residents of the greater Princeton area. Our
unique combination of highly trained and licensed psychiatrists,
psychologists, clinical social workers, counselors and pastoral
counselors are dedicated to providing effective mental health
services to everyone in the greater Princeton community.
our lives. This is, of course, precisely what the therapeutic
process facilitates. The more insight we have into our self and
into our own experiences, the more capable we are of having
authentic, meaningful, rewarding life experiences, the more
connected we feel to ourselves and to others, and the more
capable we are of understanding why we might be struggling
with whatever it is that is causing us distress.
Talking with people helps. Talking to friends and family
is w
onderful and critically important, but working with a
therapist and having the opportunity to develop a t houghtful,
trusting relationship with that person is a unique e
 xperience.
It offers structured, meaningful support and feedback. The
opportunity to work with a trained professional helps us
develop a capacity for reflective functioning that can be
gratifying and enlightening, and also useful and potentiating.
At TCS, we do our best to deliver individual, couples,
family, and group counseling and support to anyone in our
community who seeks it. We have two psychiatrists and an
APN who work closely with our therapists when p
 sychiatric
consultations are requested and/or medication is warranted.
We have recently hired many new, highly trained, e
 xperienced
therapists to join our talented team.
So as we all strive to find this mythical, perfect “balance” that
we hear so much about, I encourage you to think about how
some of our many services might benefit you or your loved
ones. Please contact us if you would like to talk about how we
might be able to help you or someone you care about.
I look forward to the possibility of meeting you.
Sincerely,
Dr. Whitney B. Ross

It has long been known that anxiety, stress, and d
depression

are mind-body experiences. When a person is under stress,
or anxious, they often experience headaches, sweats,
stomachaches,

Society perpetuates the stigma of seeking therapy by
allowing
allowing the continuation of stereotypes that make clients
of mental health services appear “weak” or “vulnerable” or
“crazy.” Trinity Counseling Service hopes to begin to reframe
the conversation, promoting seeking therapy and working
with trained therapists as a sign of strength, emotional and
intellectual health, and a path that can lead to greater clarity
and stability in people’s lives.

The process of seeking help raises questions and can, at
times, seem daunting. There are many questions that people
have once they do decide to seek support. “Where does one
go? What kind of therapy should I be looking for? What about
the time and money? How bad do I have to feel, anyway?”
anyway?”
The experts at Trinity Counseling Service believe that if
one’s symptoms interfere with daily functioning one should
seek treatment immediately. But the vast majority of people
who seek therapy, including most clients treated at TCS, are
people who are looking for coping strategies to deal with the
stressors that come with everyday life; they are looking for
ways to feel better.

techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy and
mindfulness. I try to meet everyone where they are and take
a very empathetic approach. I assess what is most beneficial
to my client at the moment and take an active approach in
guiding them.
A graduate of Williams College, Amy
Sterling-Bratt received her Masters in
Social Work from Smith College School
for Social Work. She sees adolescents
and adults in individual therapy as
well as couples and families. Amy has
previously worked in California, Virginia
and overseas. She is licensed to practice in New Jersey
and Massachusetts.
What are you currently focused on professionally?
Last fall, I took an 8-week course on a program for mindfulness
and stress reduction that I felt was very helpful for my
practice. I find that utilizing the therapeutic approach of
mindfulness is almost always useful. I’m looking to focus more
on this approach since it is an area that I am pretty invested
in. I would also like to focus my attention and research on
trauma work.
What are some things that you find most rewarding about
being a clinician at TCS?
I’ve been impressed with the diversity of people that come
to TCS, and I’ve come to appreciate that the clients are
from all ages, backgrounds, and education levels. I also enjoy
working with the other TCS clinicians who have different
disciplines and a variety of specialties. It’s impressive to
see the wide range of mental health concerns that can be
addressed under one roof. This is the kind of environment
that is phenomenal to work in, especially being new to the
area. The TCS c ommunity is very supportive.
What do you do to unwind outside of work?
I like to stay active. I enjoy skiing, yoga, playing tennis, and
biking. Since my husband and I are new to the Princeton area,
we appreciate the variety of activities that come with living in
a college town. We’ve taken advantage of McCarter T
 heatre
and are always looking for ways to immerse ourselves in this
great community.
How would you describe your therapeutic approach and in
what ways do you find it helpful for clients?
My approach is psychodynamic, but I also incorporate
